Dear Fellow Lions,
March has arrived, and we have a lot of things happening this month. First we will move or “spring”our clocks ahead earlier then usual on the second Sunday of the month, March 11th. This is new this year,so make sure you are alert and move your clocks one hour ahead, so you won’t be late for all the importantLions work you have to do. Also, we will have our last round of Region meetings during this month.
I would like to take this opportunity to address our Campaign Sight First II fundraiser. Needless to say,I was real disappointed a couple of weeks ago when I received the LCIF report that indicated that we areonly one third pledged for this campaign. In District 24D, it is even worse than that since we have 46 outof 58 clubs who have not reported any pledges and/or contributions to CSFIII. I know that this Districtcan do much better than that. Each club should have someone responsible for promoting this most impor-tant project throughout their club. As you can see, only 12 clubs have pledged or contributed to this
worthwhile cause that will help erase blindness in the world. I hope that the main reason there are so many “zeros” in the “total funds raised”for each club is that your respective club just hasn’t reported the pledges/contributions to LCIF. Each Lion member doesn’t have to pledge$400 or more to make this fundraiser for the District a success; if a member can only pledge/contribute $50.00 per year or less, then we canhave 100% participation. Think about the fact that you can cure blindness in one child for each $6.00 that you contribute. I know that theLions of District 24D, can do much better than what we have done so far. If you need more information, have your President or Secretary con-tact their respective CSFIII Group Coordinator for another program or assistance. PLEASE HELP THE BLIND, AND ALSO MAKE THISPROJECT THE SUCCESS THAT I KNOW IT CAN BE!!!! If you don’t know whom your CSFII Group Coordinator is, then contact theCSFIII District Coordinator Lion Greg Hall at 757-319-3083.
The Zone Bland Contests have been completed with some very talented young people going on to the Region Contests in March. TheDistrict Contest is in April and the two winners who will go to the State Convention Bland Contest will be chosen. Hopefully, you will all sup-port Chairpersons Ellen Bovee and Chris Stauffer in these contests.
I would like to thank PDG Lion Debbie Ivey and the Oceana-Lynnhaven Golden Lions Club for the great job they did for our superGovernor’s Ball. I appreciate everyone that attended and especially the Past District Governors that were there for us to honor. I know every-one had a great time like I did.
Our Leadership Training will be on April 21st at Sarah Bonwell Hudgins and there is information on the sign-up form provided in this issue. We are going to have a Worldwide Induction for all new members who have come into Lionism this Lions’ year. Please put this date on yourcalendar and plan to attend. If you are going to be a new officer in your club, IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you attend theLeadership Training. I have been going to this training for the past ten years, and you will be amazed at what you will learn regardless how manytimes you attend.
Yours in Lionism,
Lion Dick

POQUOSON LIONSHOST ANNUAL
BLAND CONTESTby Lion Mark Moncure
The Poquoson Lions Club hosted its annual Bland Music Contestlast month at Poquoson High School. This annual event is named inhonor of Mr. Jimmie A. Bland, the greatest Black writer of Americanfolk songs and composer of over seven hundred songs. He is bestknown for writing “Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny” which in 1940was adopted as the official state song until it’s retirement in 1997. TheLions Clubs of Virginia were impressed by Mr. Bland’s patriotic fervorand became interested in his life only to learn that he was deceasedand buried in an unmarked grave in Merion Pennsylvania. TheVirginia Lions erected an impressive monument for his grave and ded-icated it in 1946.
This annual music competition in his honor provides an opportu-nity for the youth of our community to engage in healthy competitionin both voice and instrumental categories. Contestants were eligiblefor cash prizes totaling $500 and have the opportunity to competeat higher levels of competition, culminating at the state level at theannual Lions State Convention.

Journey for SightUpdate: RACE DATE- APRIL 14, 2007
Attention, the race date for District’s Journey forSight races will be April 14, 2007 after all! Conflictswith the use of the Fort Story recreation center as ourrace registration and event facility required us to con-sider moving the race to a date in March. However, the wonderful staff at Fort Story indicated recentlythat they preferred the race to stay at its original dateand they have provided the post’s Bowling Alley asour race headquarters. After reviewing the BowlingAlley with the manager on January 6, it will meet ourneeds.
The bad news is that we loose our familiar facilitybut there is lots of good news. The manager, JamesBishop, will open his grill in the morning and we willbe able to provide our visually impaired a hot break-fast and drinks! In addition, if any volunteer thatwishes to have breakfast, it will be provided at nocost. All we need to know is how many of each desirebreakfast. Breakfast will be covered as part of theevent cost. Although tighter on the inside, we willhave the use of the outdoor veranda for our awardsceremony. In addition, this covered veranda willaccommodate the visually impaired who can be seat-ed and protected.
More good news, the Bowling Alley is right behindthe Sandpiper Recreation Center! So the parking andlocation is virtually the same, just our outdoor setupshave to move over a bit to the Bowling Alley side. So
remember, April 14th is the race date, the BowlingAlley is now race headquarters and the 5K starts at8:30 A.M. and the one mile at 9:15 A.M.
We are already set up for online registration withActive.com and race flyers are out. You can tell folkto register on line or print an application at theTidewater Strider race schedule web site athttp://www.tidewaterstriders.com/schedule.html Toregister on line, just click on Lions Journey for Sightand follow the directions.
If you need any more information contact LionDan Hurley at (757) 686-0282 or email at [email protected]. Thanks to the staff at Fort Story forsetting us up for a great race.
