VOLUME 80 MAY, JUNE, JULY 2020 NO. 3 Our 80th Year! THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF LIFE-STUDY FELLOWSHIP, NOROTON, CT, U.S.A. The air is warming and people are starting to spend time out- side, so it’s fitting that our Springtime edition of Faith Magazine is arriving in the mail. Its theme of “Be GIVING Always,” is a timely idea as more people are enjoying outside activities. Our “giving” theme brings to mind the Bible Verse of II Corinthians 9:7, which says . . . Every man according as he pur- poseth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of neces- sity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” Yes, Dear Friend, wouldn’t the World be a wonderful place if everyone subscribed to the idea of being “a cheerful giver?” We do know that giving, and helping others, is a common practice for our Members. from our Fellowship Friendstelling us about the multitude ofways that they help others intheir communities, whetherthrough their churches or a soloeffort. For example, on Page 6 our

Dear Friend Connie wrote to tellus how she organized a paintingcrew to help spruce up the homeof an elderly neighbor. Besides beautifying the neigh-

borhood, Connie said helpingsomeone else gave her a greatfeeling! And, on Page 5 longtime

Member Darlene K. ofMississippi recalled how sheand her family benefitted fromthe generosity of her husband’scoworkers when he was involvedin a work-related accident. Hisfellow employees actually tookup a donation to help her familyand her spouse during his longrecovery period. Darlene was so grateful for

their help that she told us shejumped at the chance to becomea “Cheerful Giver” herself toassist another worker who washurt on the job. In addition to their giving to

help others, our FellowshipFriends often say the hardshipsthey encounter makes themappreciate the little things inlife even more. On Page 9, Member I. L. from

Louisiana remembers a violenthurricane that taught her avaluable lesson about what’sreally important in life. Whileshe cried over losing her hometo the storm, her sister pointedout to her that she had escaped

unharmed. Our Dear Friendtook that lesson to heart, andbegan praying to God and start-ing to rebuild her life. “With His help,” she wrote, “I

not only found the means torebuild and refurnish my home. Ifound something far more impor-tant. I found a new me! I havegone into a nursing program, and also become a volunteerteacher’s aide in my children’sschool. I am finding a sense of joy and

happiness by helping others inboth fields. Looking back, I sup-pose that violent hurricane actu-ally did some good! It certainlywas the turning point in my life -the point at which I turned toGod and discovered how He cantruly rebuild anything! Yes, Heeven rebuilt a person like meusing His tools of love and under-standing!”We hope you like our Giving-

themed FAITH, Dear Friend, and that you’ll stay in touchwith us, too.

“I’m Happy To Be God’sCheerful Giver Whenever I Can!”My Dear Fellowship Friends,

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase“Pay it forward.” Well, my storyis about benefiting from some-one else’s kindness and doingjust that! The experience mademe a more giving person andmade me think about how thatfits in with how I think the Lordwants us to act. I grew up in the Midwest in a

close-knit family. Dad was atruck driver and Mom helddown the fort at home, keepingus kids fed, clothed and gettingus off to school. It really was agreat childhood.Eventually, I got a job myself

and married a man I had knownas a boy who lived nearby. Wehad children of our own, and hehad a good job at a factory a fewmiles away. We had a wonderfullife together, until one day I got acall from his workplace thatsomething awful had happened. My husband had been badlyinjured by some industrialmachinery!I rushed to the hospital to see

him in Intensive Care, with bro-ken bones and hooked up to anarray of medical equipment. The doctors said they had savedhis life, but weren’t sure if hecould ever totally recover. I was distraught and fright-

ened. Without my husband’spaycheck, how would we pay thebills? That night, as I sat in a

chair in the corner of his hospi-tal room, I prayed silently: “DearJesus, please heal my husbandand help us get through this!” Atthat moment, I felt a calm comeover me. Suddenly, I knew theLord had answered my prayerand my husband and familywould be OK. Unbeknown to me, my hus-

band’s coworkers had collected asizable donation to tide us overthe three-month recovery perioduntil he was able to go back towork.A couple years later, one of my

husband’s friends also was hurtin an accident at work. I immedi-ately volunteered to collect con-tributions to help out that gen-tleman and his family. It felt likethe right thing to do since myloved ones had been given somuch. I think of the Bible Verse in II

Corinthians 9:7, which says:“Every man according as he pur-poseth in his heart, so let himgive; not grudgingly, or of neces-sity: for God loveth a cheerfulgiver.” I’m happy to be God’s “cheer-

ful giver” whenever I can do so!Darlene K., Mississippi

“Be GIVING Always” is thetheme of this Faith Magazine,Dear Member. Of course, thereare many different ways to pur-sue that goal. For example, we can help

someone else accomplish a taskor get out of trouble. The Biblepassage of Galatians 6:2 offersguidance on that matter with itsmessage: “Bear ye one another'sburdens, and so fulfill the law ofChrist.”So, how might that example

work? We’re thinking of a recentletter from another DearFellowship Friend namedConnie. She wrote to tell us howgood she felt about helping oneof her neighbors who was in a

difficult spot. Connie told us thehome of her friend and neigh-bor, who was older, needed a coatof paint. The city they lived inthought so, too, and sent theneighbor a citation, which upsether to no end. Connie said her friend confid-

ed in her about what had hap-pened, and being a Member ofFellowship, Connie decided tohelp. She wrote that she talkedto some other folks in the neigh-borhood and they all showed upone weekend at their neighbor’shome with cans of paint. Many hands make light the

work, as the old saying goes, andit certainly held true with thetask of painting a home thatreally needed it. While some peo-ple scraped off the remnants ofan old paint job, others camebehind with a pretty new coat ofcolor that made the home glowwith pride. Connie’s neighbor was so

happy and grateful that peoplecared enough to help her! OurFellowship Friend Connie feltgreat, too, knowing she had fol-lowed the Lord’s teachings andhelped someone by choosing to“bear another’s burden.” It’s a reminder that when we

help others we also reap bigrewards ourselves. That’sbecause God wants us to “BeGIVING Always!”

The Positive Act Of HelpingOthers Is Its Own Reward!

As I listened to the latestweather report, I heard a danger-ous hurricane was headedstraight for my coastal city. Still,I wasn’t particularly alarmed.During that period of my lifenothing seemed to phase me. Ialways felt a little above every-thing and everybody, snug andself-centered, and never dream-ing that my comfortable and pri-vate little World could be dis-turbed. How wrong I was! When the

hurricane screamed ashore prac-tically my entire home wascrushed like a paper bag! My fur-niture, all my treasures andbelongings were lost or ruined. The next morning as we were

looking at the terrible damage, Ibroke down and cried. “Now, Ihave nothing,” I sobbed. My sister turned to me and

said, “Oh, but you do! You haveyour family, and it’s a miraclethat you weren’t all killed. Youhave something else, too. Youhave God to help you rebuild!”It was then that my sister was

able for the first time to make melisten to what God andFellowship’s United Prayersmeant to her. Until then, I simplyhad not been interested. Following her advice, I joined

our Prayer Group and wrote toFellowship's Special HelpDepartment for the individualguidance I so desperately needed. When I received those prayers Istarted learning what trueprayer was really about. I startedfeeling closer to God!I prayed, and I took a good look

at myself, too. I realized it wastime for me to get rid of my self-ish, conceited way. I just knewthat the Lord was going to helpme make a big change for the bet-ter. And, He did! With His help, I not only found

the means to rebuild and refur-nish my home. I found somethingfar more important. I found anew me! I have gone into a nurs-ing program, and also become avolunteer teacher’s aide in mychildren’s school. I am finding asense of joy and happiness byhelping others in both fields. Looking back, I suppose that

violent hurricane actually didsome good! It certainly was theturning point in my life -- thepoint at which I turned to Godand discovered how He can trulyrebuild anything! Yes, He evenrebuilt a person like me usingHis tools of love and understand-ing!

My husband and I were onvacation in a pretty place inFlorida. The weather was gor-geous and we were both fishingand relaxing. We had workedand saved for this vacation andit truly was a delightful one.Not until we were on our way

home was our happy mood shat-tered! For as we were drivingalong I reached into my purseand discovered that both mymoney and my checkbook weremissing! We stopped immediately and

called the motel in Floridawhere we had been staying. But,they said that nothing had beenfound in our room. We were ter-ribly discouraged, but we real-ized there was little else wecould do except to continue dri-ving home. As we drove, I took out my

Faith Magazine. I never go any-where without it. I said the NoonPrayer for Prosperity, and I feltmuch better afterward. I eventold my husband that I hopedwhoever found the money wouldat least put it to good use. The Lord has always taken

such wonderful care of us, and Imade up my mind right then notto worry about this matter overwhich I had no control. Godwould do what was best. We were back home in only a

few days, Dear Friends, when anenvelope arrived in the mail.

Inside were both my checkbookand every single dollar we hadlost! It seems that I had dropped the

checkbook and the money in alittle variety store where we hadbeen shopping in Florida. Anemployee had found them, andfrom my name and address onmy checks the store was able toreturn them to us. Certainly,God had answered that Prayerfor Prosperity which I offeredHim in the car that afternoon! Itjust proves that no matter whereyou happen to be, no matterwhat is happening, He hears andHe answers those who trust inHim!The little Faith Magazine that

I always carry with me was sure-ly pointing me in God’s direc-tion that day!

soft and notice some peopledress up, while others wearcasual clothing. Some of us singbeautifully and some can’t carrya note. There are people who canrun and jump higher than any-one else, while their neighborscan’t hit a ball. It is said variety is the spice of

life, and around the World wesee evidence of that, becauseGod made us all different. Eachof us has our own personality, feelings and dreams. Yet onething all of us have in commonis the Lord’s love for us, His chil-dren. It is God’s unconditional love

that gives us strength, throughour faith in Him. He doesn’thave “favorite” sons and daugh-ters. To God we are all equal inHis Eyes and in His Heart. For as the Bible tells us in

Galatians 3:26: “For ye are allthe children of God by faith inChrist Jesus.” Yes, Dear Friend, the Scripture says God loves allof us the same, and faith can bestrong within someone even ifthey themselves are fragile.Truly, the Lord showers the

same amount of love on uswhether we pray to Him inchurch or at home, at work orplay. We can learn something from

that experience, too, DearFriend. Let us be friendly andhelpful to one another as we areall in the Family of God, unitedin our belief in His power andgrace. We needn’t fear otherswho are different than usbecause our differences are partof God’s great plan for theWorld. After all, we join voices every

day to say our Three DailyPrayers. In that way we becomestronger than if we remainedseparate. So, don’t be afraid toreach out your hand to someonewho is a little different than you.We all share the same spirituallove for the Lord!

I wasn’t getting along at all inthe place I worked. Some of theothers seemed to get more con-sideration, especially theyounger and prettier ones. I used to spend hours thinking

of ways I might get back at someof them, though I kept mybrooding thoughts to myself. Ibecame more and more bitter. After a couple weeks I began

to get stomach trouble, whichgrew worse at night as I lay inbed, planning how to get evenwith the ladies in the place. So, I wrote to our Fellowship’s

Special Help Department, tellingthem about the pain, but notabout the other trouble. Theiranswer came back right awayand one Bible Verse which they

quoted to me seemed to standout: “Put up thy sword . . . for they

that take up the sword shall per-ish with the sword.”Suddenly, I understood the

meaning of the Lord’s words. Ihad taken up the sword of envyand anger and criticism and thathad been turned against me. Yes,it had been turned against myown stomach, and instantly Iknew what was causing all mypain. There was nothing wrongwith my stomach, but I hadpointed the “sword” at myself !Then I understood the real

meaning of our Fellowship’sGolden Rule: “Be Forgiving.”I realized that most of the

trouble at my work came frommy own envy and bad feelingsagainst the others. I prayed: “Father, forgive me

as I forgive all the ladies in theplace. Now I know I don’t have tofight anyone . . . and I am puttingup my sword as You command.”I went peacefully to sleep and

the next morning every sign ofmy stomach trouble had van-ished. I lost all trace of bitter-ness toward my fellow workers. Icould now see the wonderfulgood in them! Even better, sincethat time all the ladies have goneout of their way to be nice to me.My whole life, not only where Iwork, but everywhere else, haschanged thanks to Fellowship’sSpecial Help Department!

Some Members have inquiredabout how they might make abequest to Life-Study Fellowship.Through the years, many

Members have chosen to remem-ber our Fellowship in this spe-cial way and we are truly grate-ful. Some Members have includ-ed Fellowship in their wills, while others have named Life-Study Fellowship in their lifeinsurance policies. If you are interested in making

arrangements through your will,we suggest you talk with anattorney who can explain the taxadvantages and ways to go aboutmaking such a bequest.

Please remember that it is toeverybody’s advantage to have awill. This doesn’t apply just tothe very wealthy. The truth iseveryone who owns any propertyneeds a will to direct who shouldbenefit. Otherwise, some or all of your

property will be split up accord-ing to state law, which may leaveyour property in ways you didnot want or intend. Therefore, whether or not you

include a bequest to Life-StudyFellowship, we encourage you toseek the services of an attorneyto have a will drawn up if youhave not already done so.

At times I feel the Lord’sPresence so close to me, and some-times it seems like He is so faraway. As I sit back and reflect onhow life can pull you in and out, like the stretching of a rubberband, I am also reminded of thewords our Lord and Savior tells usabout in the Book of St. John,Chapter 14, Verses 15-21. In John14:18, we read that Jesus tells us: “Iwill not leave you comfortless: Iwill come to you!”Have you ever had “one of those

days” and wondered to yourself . . .“Lord, where are You in all thismess?” Well, Friend, allow me toreassure you that your HeavenlyFather has not left you, nor will Heever leave you alone! There was a time approximately

two years ago, while I was homestudying the Bible one night, whenI felt the Presence of God allaround me. As I usually do whenstudying, I had some Gospel musicplaying in the background. I don’trecall the topic I was studying, butI can remember feeling so alone atthat moment . . . while feelingGod’s Presence all at the same

time. But then I felt a flutter hap-pening beneath my left shoulderblade. I was sitting in a chair at mydesk when it happened. I turnedaround to see if anyone was there, but there was no one. I began to say a little prayer

thanking Jesus for visiting me,and as suddenly as it had startedthe fluttering disappeared. It hadfelt like I was being brushed gentlywith angels’ wings. It was sooth-ing, calming and relaxing (once Irealized what was happening). There was another incident that

I’d like to share with you. Mydaughter and I enjoy watching thestorms travel through our area, soone night we were listing to musicwhile watching a big storm comein from the west. My daughter waslooking towards the north and Iwas looking towards the west, when all of a sudden a big bolt oflightning scattered across the darknight sky. At the very moment the light-

ning bolt struck in the distance, Isaw a fireball or bright orb thatseemed to travel towards our backdeck. Wow! My eyes felt a littlestrange after the incident, but Icould see just fine. Well, I hope you have found

some encouragement in this let-ter I’ve written to you. Pleasecontinue to offer our UnitedPrayers, and may God bless youabundantly in Fellowship!

Sometimes we wonder, “Whatdid I do to deserve this,” or“Why did God have to do this tome?” Well, Dear Friend, here is awonderful story explainingsome answers to those ques-tions.Picture a daughter telling her

mother how everything is goingwrong; she’s failing algebra; herboyfriend broke up with her;and her best friend is movingaway. While the daughter is com-

plaining, her mother is makinga cake and asks if her daughterwould like a snack. “Absolutely,Mom,” the girl replies. “I love

your cake.”At that point, the mother says,

“Here, have some cooking oil!” “Yuck!” answers her daughter. “How about a couple raw

eggs?” the mother adds, elicitinga response … “That’s gross,Mom!”“Would you like some flour,

then? What about some bakingsoda?” the mother then asks.“Mom, those are all yucky!”

the daughter declares. Her mother answers, “Yes, all

those things seem bad all bythemselves, but when they areput together in the right way, they make a wonderfully deli-cious cake.” It’s true, Dear Member! God

works the same way. Many timeswe wonder why He would let usgo through such bad and diffi-cult times. But God knows thatwhen He puts these things all inthe proper order, they alwayswork for the good. We just haveto trust Him, and eventually Hisplan for us will make sense andcreate something wonderful. The truth is, God really loves

you! He sends you flowers everyspring and a sunrise everymorning. Whenever you want totalk, He will listen. He can liveanywhere in the universe, butchooses to live here . . . in yourheart. So, life may not be the party

we’d hope for, but while we’rehere we might as well dance!

The Truth Is,God Really Loves You!

Hymn

What a Friend we have in Jesus,All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carryEverything to God in prayer!O what peace we often forfeit,O what needless pain we bear,All because we do not carryEverything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged,Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithfulWho will all our sorrows share?Jesus knows our every weakness,Take it to the Lord in prayer!

Are we weak and heavy-laden,Cumbered with a load of care?Precious Savior, still our refugeTake it to the Lord in prayer;Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?Take it to the Lord in prayer; In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,Thou wilt find a solace there.

What A Friend We Have In Jesus!

This is the Spring issue ofFaith Magazine, Dear Member, and we think the idea of faith inthe Lord and springtime havesomething in common . . . Faithcan bring a new beginning andmake over your outlook on lifejust as spring brings new lifeafter a long, bleak winter.Just as spring green leaves

begin to sprout from plants wak-ing up to warmer weather, faithin God can make you feelbrighter and happier. Why isthat? Well, it’s because people offaith know God is with themalways, watching over them andlistening to their prayers. Faith calms the most worried

thoughts because you know Hewill reveal His answer to yourprayers when the time is right.God can help us with whateverwe face in life. All He asks us todo is seek His help throughprayer, and believe in Himthrough our faith. Faith is a strong foundation

that supports you in hard timesand makes you happy whenthings are going well. Faith is transparent, yet

stronger than steel. It is power-ful, yet weighs (and costs) noth-ing. When you are supported by

faith, you may feel more confi-dent about your ability toaccomplish a goal or complete aproject at work. That can giveyou an advantage over a job

applicant who is depressed andhas no belief in God to encour-age and strengthen them. Now,having faith doesn’t mean you’llnever make a mistake. It justmeans the Lord gives you achance to recover from them. So, as you enjoy these wonder-

ful spring months, DearMember, please take some timeto think about what your faith inthe Lord means to your life. Just as the green shoots of

spring are a symbol of God’srenewal of life among plants, faith in Him awakens new life inus.Yes, the Lord’s love for us is

boundless and pure. Can ourlove for Him be any less?

Faith Can Inspire, Comfort,Support And Lift You Up!
