We have mentioned in our past newslettersconcerns about locking doors, turning off lights, etc. at the clubhouse. Thank you, to those whohavehelped in thesematters. Unfortunately, moreconcerns have risen in the last 3months.Residentshave entered the clubhouse at different times ofthe day to work out. The door has been unlockedat least 4 times. One morning around 5:30AM acouple was very concerned about their safetybecause the frontdoorwasunlockedand themen’sbathroom light was on. They checked theclubhouse tomake sure no onewas inside becausethe husband needed to leave and the wife wasn’tfinished working out. This makes for an uneasysituation. Everything turned out fine this time, but our community really needs to make sure tolock the doors for security matters, but mostimportantly, from a safety perspective. So...please, turn off all lights except for the lampon thetable in the entrance and please lock the doors ifyou are the last person in the building at the time.

Fixing My Smoke Alarm – How It TookMe All Day to Fix a Ten-Minute ProblemI came home to my place on Sienna Way a few weeks ago andfound that the smoke alarmwasbeeping. I figured that the batterywas running low, so I dragged out my ladder, crawled up to theceiling, and removed the old battery. Naturally, I didn’t have anynew ones, so I trekked off to the hardware store to buy a few. Then, I clambered up to the ceiling again and put in the newbattery. Success! Not quite... The beeping continued.
I removed and replaced the new battery a few times just to makesure it was installed properly. The beeps still sounded.
It was clear that desperate measures would be required – I wouldhave to read the owner’s manual. I looked in the box ofdocuments that came with the condo...no smoke alarm manual. So, I crawled up to the ceiling again and got the model number.(First Alert/BRK SC9120B) Then, using the magic of Google, Ifound the document on the manufacturer’s web site.
I soon discovered that the alarm wasn’t beeping – it was“chirping.” More than that, it was sounding three quick chirps, repeated about once a minute. The manual clearly stated: “Unithas malfunctioned. Replace immediately.”
A little more Googling determined that the Ace Hardware onNorthland Avenue had the same model smoke detector in stock, listed at $45. That seemed pricey so I grumbled a bit but preparedto head out to buy one.
Then, I had an inspiration. The owner’s manual said that thesmoke detector had a ten-year warranty and it gave an 800-number for service. I had no receipt and no date of purchase butI figured that I had nothing to lose, so I gave them a call.
It was Friday night and I wasn’t expecting much. Aknowledgeable person at First Alert answered right away! Heasked for the model number and the date code printed on thebottom of the detector and quickly determined that the unit wasunder warranty. It would be replaced for nothing! A new smokealarm arrived in UPS in a few days. Thank you, First Alert!
Bottom line: If you have a First Alert SC9120B smoke detectorthat was installed by Apple Tree less than ten years ago and itstarts chirping three times every minute, don’t mess with it. Getit down off the ceiling so you can see the date code and callFirstAlert at 800-323-9005. They’ll send you a new one for free.

If your unit is beeping and you feel you can do thereplacement on your own, remove the old unitsand check the underside of the smoke alarm for thealarm codes to determine if it is a battery or someother problem. You can also call the contactnumber listed to determine if yours is covered bywarrantyor if it is defective.Youmight be elegiblefor a free replacement like Mike Baur
