Dear Parents, As we continue the school year we will continue implementing the 7 Habits of Happy Kids within “The Leader in Me,” by Stephen Covey. This month we want to focus on the habits that we have covered this school year. Habit 1: Be Proactive (You’re in charge of yourself. You choose your actions, attitudes, moods and you don’t blame others for your wrongdoing ), Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind (Plan ahead and set goals for yourself.), Habit 3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play), Habit 4: Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win), Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Listen Before You Talk), Habit 6: Synergize (Together Is Better). As the school year unfolds, our children are learning the language and meaning of the 7 Habits. By hearing the same language at home and at school, we are able to send children a strong message of what we believe is important and that we are all on the same team—the team that wants to help them be successful. Oprah Winfrey

Have you ever heard of Oprah Winfrey? She was the first African-American to become a billionaire. Oprah Winfrey is a perfect role model for many people. She had a lot of problems when she was little like many people today. First, I will be talking about her life. Oprah G. Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. As a child, relatives and her mother’s friends abused her. Later in life she moved with her father in Tennessee. There, she went to Tennessee State University. At the University, she started working on radio and television broadcasting. In 1976, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland and had a hit TV show named “People Are Talking”. Then in 1986, she began “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” From then on, Winfrey has been famous and one of the most influential African-American women ever. To conclude, Oprah Winfrey is a very successful woman and many people look up to her.

Michelle Obama

We all have heard of Michelle Obama but do you really know her?

Michelle Obama is a role model because of her MyPlate initiative and because of her life experiences. Michelle Obama was born in Chicago, Illinois and she was raised in a small bungalow. She graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She became a lawyer, Chicago Administrator, Community-Outreach worker and all of these jobs helped her qualify to be the first lady of the United States of America.

From her amazing style to her captivating efforts to help the world be a better place. Michelle Obama is a role model because of her attempts to fight childhood obesity and wanting youth to be healthy. Young women feel influenced by her acts of creating a healthy image of how our plate is suppose to look like when it comes to eating.

In conclusion Michelle Obama is very popular and she is an amazing role model. She inspires many people to live a better and healthy life. She will always be remembered as the first African-American First Lady of the United States of America.

Maya Angelou Have you ever heard of Maya Angelou? Maya Angelou was a famous poet and author. So let’s start from the beginning. Marguerite Annie Johnson was born April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri as the second child of Bailey Johnson and Vivian Johnson. At the age of 3 Maya’s parent’s marriage soon died and her parents broke up. Soon after her father sent her and her siblings to Stamp, Arkansas to live with their grandmother, Annie Henderson. Four years later, Maya’s father came to Stamps without anyone knowing. He returned Maya and her siblings to their mother’s care. At the age of 8, her mother’s boyfriend a man named Freeman abused Maya. He was found guilty but was jailed for one day. Four days after he got out he was murdered. People thought that her uncles had killed Freeman. For about 5 years she was mute because she thought that her voice would kill another person. After the murder, Maya and her brothers went back with their grandmother. Maya credits her teacher and friend to her family, Mrs. Bertha Flower, for helping her speak again.

In 1951, Maya married Tosh Angelos. Ten years later she performed in Jean Genet’s play The Black, along with Abbey Lincoln, Roscoe Lee Brown, James Earl Jones, Louis Gossett, Godfrey Cambridge, and Cicely Tyson. In Accra, she became very close friends with Malcolm X. In 1968 Maya helped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. organize a march but he was assassinated on April 4th at the age of 40.

Maya wrote poetry books and she also wrote books about her life too. On May 28, 2014, in the morning, Maya Angelou passed away. She was found dead by her nurse. Maya was an influential author, poet, and civil right activist. In conclusion, she wrote many amazing books, one of the most recognized is “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” She has inspired many people to be true to themselves and she has accomplished a lot of remarkable things in her life. Many people loved her.

The Spring Book Fair will take place from March 6th- March 10th

Malcolm X said that, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”.   He also said that, “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world.”   The question is “Where do you want to go?” Dr. Seuss wrote about the places you can go just by reading. The education that you obtain through reading and learning in all of your classes are the key ingredients to success; no matter what you may want to do in life or where you want to go. Education does not only mean going to college. Education means learning so that you have the option of not only going to college but also starting a career in something that you love to do.   Wonderful Warwick students: Where do you want to go? The Reading Campaign

The campaign has officially started! Students in grades 1-2 are expected to read 40 books per marking period. Students in grades 3-5 are

expected to read 10 chapter books (80 pages or more)

per marking period.

Students that reach these goals will be honored at an assembly where there will be

prizes and awards.
