After all, the great stained glass windows in the Sanctuary and the Mosaic on the front of the building remain in place. (Well, that is sort of true for the Mosaic!) And the pictures of our five church buildings can be moved, but they have now been hanging in the same hallway over five years without moving. Let me write this week about some art that we use which gets around a good bit – our church logo. Four years ago we crafted our understanding of the mission of the church into five words which are easy to remember: This new version of the mission statement inspired a new logo. This logo comes from the art on our church building, but the artwork of the logo does not depict our church building. First Baptist Church is more than a building. We are the people of God who are knowing, loving, serving Christ . . . together. The simple drawing is inspired by the Mosaic on the front of our building that is so well known in our community. The colors of blue and green are taken from the colors of the mosaic. The cross that is central to the logo is styled after the cross that you see in the mosaic. Just as a mosaic or a stained glass window is composed of many pieces which together make up a work of art, so the church is filled with many different kinds of people who are unified around the cross of Christ. The logo has five parts that represent the five parts of our mission statement: a cross that is central (Christ) and four quadrants around the cross that represent how we live for Christ – knowing, loving, serving, together. It is important to have some “portable art,” the kind that gets around on printed material, clothing, Internet, social media, and just about everywhere we can turn. In the same way, it is essential for all of us who experience the art of faith when we worship in these beautiful buildings to share this “art” wherever we go as we are knowing, loving, serving Christ . . . together.

The art in our church building that I have been writing about for the last few weeks stays in one place. And the pictures of our five church buildings can be moved, but they have now been hanging in the same hallway over five years without moving. Let me write this week about some art that we

Wednesday Night Bible Study Leadership

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Dan Champion as he helps lead our Wednesday evening Bible Study beginning August 13. After finishing his undergraduate work at Mississippi College in Speech and Bible, he attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he was awarded a Master of Divinity in Religious Education. He also secured an M.A. from LSU in Speech Communication and was awarded a Ph.D from LSU in Speech Communication, History.

In addition to his work as a permanent Baptist pastor, Dr. Champion’s Christian journey includes at least 17 stints, some more than once, as an interim pastor in various locations in the south. Dr. Champion also has an impressive and extensive forty-year history as professor, department chair, dean, Vice President and Interim President at three different institutions, including Carson-Newman College.

He has already made a significant contribution to our congregation as he is the father of our own Tara Dubose-Schmitt. I know we are truly blessed to secure Dr. Dan Champion to lead us on Wednesdays during August and September.

Dr. William E. Hull, our pastor’s late father, wrote a book about dying as he made his journey with ALS. It is a practical guide for all who are facing death and for friends and family of people who are giving care to someone who is dying. The book is on sale for $10 each and will be available in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday nights, in the church library on Sunday mornings, and in the church office during the week.

The art in our church building that I have been writing about for the last few weeks stays in one place. After all, the great stained glass windows in the Sanctuary and the Mosaic on the front of the building remain in place. (Well, that is sort of true for the Mosaic!) And the pictures of our five church buildings can be moved, but they have now been hanging in the same hallway over five years without moving. Let me write this week about some art that we

use which gets around a good bit – our church logo.

Four years ago we crafted our understanding of the mission of the church into five words which are easy to remember:

This new version of the mission statement inspired a new logo.

In the same way, it is essential for all of us who experience the art of faith when we worship in these beautiful buildings to share this “art” wherever we go as we are knowing, loving, serving Christ . . . together.
