BIGGER, BETTER, BRIGHTER, BADDER Well, that just about describes it. If you thought the club was pretty good as it was, stay tuned for 2011. Yes, we have the same board members— courtesy of y’all reelecting Merle President, Lee Vice President, Kurt Treasurer, and Charlie Secretary. But there will be some exciting new changes as well. Rich W. has kindly agreed to taking over the Junior meeting. It will start promptly at 6:15PM and end at 6:45PM, allowing kids to shop or snack before the regular meeting begins at 7. He will write a column called Kids Korner ( see page 3 each month) announcing the topic and allowing kids to prepare for the subject. This frees Lee up for starting to present advanced discussions to the club. He had been handling the Junior meetings since about 1992. Many of the Junior members have learned so much that they are expert at errors and other coin topics. Now is the time to move even past that, while Rich helps the newer members get started with collecting. For new and newer members : Merle is planning on having a meeting at 6:15PM in January particular for the newest members # 789 and up. This will be up on the stage, and is somewhat of a new member orientation—but all are welcome. Bring your name badge, there will be a prize given out. Many thanks to Sean Murphy for his superb soft drink service over the years. We appreciate all he did. Bob K and Jerry St. G will start bringing HAPPY HOLIDAYS! beverages in January– thanks for volunteering. SHOW AND TELL The topic for January is Show and Tell. Bring a numismatic item, give a 3 minute talk, and receive 4 free raffle tickets. This is usually the best attended and most interesting meeting, be sure to come! COIN SHOW UPDATE Merle has been working hard securing dealers for our show February 18-19. So far 62 of 66 tables are sold! We will also have a new dealer with coin supplies in the back of the building. Please remember to sell those gold coin drawing tickets. The coins are purchased and will be held in a safe place until the show. There is a slight change, with the usual $20 St Gaudens, and $10 and $5 Liberty gold still in the drawing. There will be 4th-9th place 2 peso gold pieces. This was printed on the gold drawing tickets, so we will keep it at this number of peso pieces. Bob C is still taking down names of people to help at the show. Last year there were only a few of us at the end to clean up. Please keep the show dates on your calendar for set-up (Wednesday Feb 16), clean up (after the show, of course), and help during the show. I’ll be asking for volunteers to work during the show to help with admissions and gold and silver ticket sales. We know most of you will be there— it is always nice when you rotate in working up front so everybody gets a chance to shop! What would a December meeting be with-out the goodies? Thanks to all who brought des-sert to the meeting, it was a tough choice for many as what to try ( or when to stop….)! And it was about all the smiles from happy members full of holiday cheer. Best wishes to all this Holiday Sea-

son and for a healthy and Happy New Year!

Rich W attended the Sacramento coin show recently and had some interesting observa-tions. Gold and silver bullion is trading at a very high rate now. This did not really affect the price of high end coins. But for lower end coins, it has brought the common date silver ( and gold) up in value quite a bit. Remember the Hunt Brothers trying to cor-ner the silver market in 1979, with prices crashing in 1980? Silver went to nearly $50 an ounce. It was flying out of the public’s hands to the bullion market and being melted rapidly. Merle was there at the time, and had a chance to sort through some of it ( finding several 1916-d dimes and buy-ing them for their silver value since the dealers did not have time to search). Now dealers are buying silver flying out of the public’s hands, though it is coming in at a slower rate. And they have time to go through all the silver looking for key dates. We do not know if common silver coins will become more scarce with melting of silver as they did in the past. But at least the rarities won’t be melted sight-unseen as probably happened in 1979 with the rush to buy and sell bullion. Time will tell where things will go.

KIDS KORNER By Rich W.

Merle asked me to lead the Jun-ior Member meet-ings beginning with the January 2011 meeting. This is being done to free Lee to do some-thing new before the meeting for adult members. I am very honored to be asked to assume the youth group and am looking forward to working with the Junior members. Meetings will start promptly at 6:15PM and I will allow some time for shopping at dealers before the general meeting starts at 7PM. Junior Members: for the January meeting, bring an album or other collection that you are working on. I will be asking for input on what Juniors are interested in do-ing or discussing at future meetings. See you in January at 6:15! Rich LM29
