Commander’s Report Cdr. Roger Simmons, SN

Greetings,

I’m going to begin my report by telling all of you how much I enjoy the month of October and the fall season in general; the crisp dry days, cooling temperatures, and changing foliage colors all set a backdrop for delightful days. This was certainly evident on our

recent cruise up the Cape Fear River to the Black River. I’m certain all of you Tar Heels have heard the old saying “nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina…” and all the glib about “Carolina blue skies”. Well, that was never more apparent than on this day cruise. Lots of sunshine and Carolina blue skies, light breezes, cool dry temperatures, great food and fellowship provided the ingredients for a very pleasant day. For those of you that participated in the cruise, I’m certain you would agree with me when I say “Folks, this is as good as it gets”. Special thanks are extended to Bill Holub, AP for organizing such a terrific event (see pg. 5 for the story).

The fun events in October concluded with our monthly membership meeting at Blue Water American Grill in Wrightsville Beach. The meeting, a masquerade gala with a Las Vegas night theme, was per-haps the climax of our meetings thus far this year. Everyone present had a grandiose time testing their skills (and luck) in Bingo, Black Jack, and Poker at the various tables, having their palms read by the fortune teller, costume contests, dancing, auctioning and so much more. It was truly an enter-taining evening, and a most fitting way to wrap up our October activities. So, I say to you, “nothing could be finer than to be in the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron in October”. Special thanks are extended to 1/Lt Jonnie’ Chardon’, P and her committee of helpers for arranging this entertaining evening. This is, indeed, as good as it gets!

Recently I have been spending considerable time reviewing merit mark submissions. Lt Lank Lan-caster, AP, our chair person in this area, devotes lots of time and effort organizing and summarizing merit mark submissions, and is currently in the final phases of recapping and submitting them to our District area monitor for approval. During this process, I am not surprised to see the countless hours of service devoted by some of you in making our squadron function. Lank informs me that approxi-mately 80 members names will be submitted for merit mark approval and many of those individuals incurred well over 100 hours of involvement in our squadron’s activities and functions. This is clearly a huge commitment of time, and time that is required in the delivery of our squadron activities and programs.

A quick glance at our Organization Chart reveals the complexity of our organization. Just think about the activities we provide: vessel safety inspections, public boating classes, squadron education courses, cruises, socials, boat shows, membership programs, newsletter publication, squadron ad-ministration and so much more. As you can readily see, we offer a lot of services to our members, and for those of you that are recipients of merit marks, special thanks are extended to you from your Commander for your efforts and commitment of time in helping Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron pursue its goals.

This will be the last Foghorn you will receive prior to Thanksgiving Day, so I’ll take this moment to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving Holiday. This is one of my favorite holidays. It’s a time to re-flect on all our many blessings and on all the reasons we have to be thankful. So, enjoy your turkey dinner and pumpkin pie and your gathering of family and friends, but most of all, be mindful of and give thanks for all our bountiful blessings.  #

Executive Officer’s Report Lt/C Ronald I. Tilmon, JN

Well folks, here we are again fast approaching the end of another very successful year of boating and fun with our fellow squadron members. I would like to think that all of us had a lot of fun and some of us more than others. You can’t believe how the fun level goes up when you become actively involved in all of the squadron’s activities. A little bit of work

can go a long way to make a lot of our members enjoy their membership even more. As we are approaching another new boating year, please consider helping the new upcoming bridge by considering volunteering for some of the positions or just to orchestrate one or more of our activities. We always need Cruise Captains for each of our planned cruises/raft-ups, and it really isn’t all that hard nor, does it take up a lot of time. We have many experienced Cruise Captains; however, I must admit that being “The Few/ The Proud’ can get old after a while. We really need more of our members to step up to the plate and help out with some of these activities. I can assure you that you

Administrative Officer’s Report Lt/C David Echevarria, P

This has been quite a year, especially the last 3 months. It began with the Chili Cook-Off in September, and continued with the Halloween and Marti Gras party in October and the Fall Luncheon and Veteran’s Day Cruise get together November 12. The Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron has definitely been the place to be for social as well as cruise events. We still have

the rest of November, December, and January next year.

We have a New Members reception scheduled for November 28 at Seapath Yacht Club. Then it’s on to our Annual Meeting and Holi-day Social at the Landfall Country Club on December 12, Cocktails at 6 PM (Cash bar). The final event for this year is the Change of Watch on January 21, 2012 at the Porters Neck Country Club. More information will be forthcoming in the December Foghorn.

No recounting of the fall events would be complete without a big thank you to the Meetings Committee led by 1Lt. Jonnie Chardon, P. Everyone on the committee spent a significant number hours in planning and [if I might add] flawless execution. In regular attendance and effort were P/C Hubert Bordeaux, SN and Helen Bordeaux, P; Voncile Echevarria, S, Lt Jan Hilbert; Lt Julie Jenkins, P; Lt Genie Lancaster, S; and Linda Van Etten. Also attending each meeting and providing valuable inputs was Squadron Commander Roger Simmons, SN and his wife Lt Mary Ellen Simmons, P . It makes these events much easier to organize when you have so many capa-ble, talented, and hardworking members. #

will find enormous satisfaction in becoming a more active member, and we also have many of our old hands that will be more than willing to assist you in any endeavor that you might wish to undertake. While we have a really good cadre of experienced instructors for our various educational offerings, we always need more help. To aid you in the process of joining the ranks of our Instructor cadre, we even have an Instructor Development class to help you get started. So, please keep this in mind if you are approached by one of our upcoming new Bridge members—or anyone else who may be seeking some assistance in keeping our wonderful organization running in tip-top shape.  #

(Continued from page 2)

Oh yes, The Costume contest. Commander Roger Simmons was gracious enough to announce the winners. Lt/C, Ron Tilmon won first place as Ozzie Osborn, 2nd place went to 1/Lt Sue Van Note, and 3rd went to Lt/C Ted Poucher (all shown below). Ben and Linda Van Etten awarded the “Plucked Chicken Award” to a contestant Susan Miller, who was in blue from head to toe & had a plucked chicken hanging around her neck, hence “Chicken Cordon Bleu”!! (Thanks to Julie Jenkins, decorating, ballots, costume contestant organizer, also thanks to; Linda Van Etten, Genie Lancaster, P/C, Nita Neumeister, AP*- ticket counter, membership roster, prize or-ganizer and on and on).

We actually finished 40 minutes earlier than I expected and I can attribute this to the skills of our Meetings Committee and all the oth-ers that participated and helped. All I did was take my big idea and put on paper. Can you believe we only had 2 preparation meet-ings prior to the opening?

Monday, Dec. 12th, 2011 is the Annual Meeting and Holiday Social at The Nicklaus Clubhouse, in Landfall. It’s time to celebrate 2011 as a great year that we’ve all had together as The Cape Fear Sail & Power Squadron. This will be a formal attire event, starting at 6:00 PM. The evening will include a dinner, the 5 piece band-“Mystic River” and dancing until 10 PM. (More information soon.)

I have been working with this group for 2 years and we’ve accomplished a lot. Lt/C Ben Van Etten, P and Tina Miller have been nomi-nated for Administrative Officer and Assistant A.O. for next year. With that said, next year should be a wonderful, exciting year with lots of education, fun and surprises. Thanks to everyone.  #

Educational Officer’s Report Lt/C Peter Dahl, JN, SEO Happy New Year. It’s not too early to start thinking about what educational courses you will take in 2012.

If you have never started on the first of the core courses you should seriously consider signing up for Seamanship

starting in early January. If you are ready for one of the advanced op-tional courses think about Engine maintenance or Part 2 of the new Electrical series. Chart reading and plotting are skills that can be learned in the Piloting course.

You can also spread the word that we will be offering the ABC course early in the year. If you know anyone new to boating or new to the Cape Fear area, they can take advantage of the USPS entry level safe boat-ing course.

So how about a New Years resolution that will be rewarding to you, your Power Squadron friends and the boating public. Sign up early for one of the 2012 course offerings by emailing Lt/C Peter Dahl JN SEO at [email protected].  #

Book Club Number 1 Sara Raleigh

Book Club Number 1 met on Tuesday, October 18 at Nancy Barnet’s. Nancy chose the gripping debut novel The Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. The book takes place in the frozen and barren landscape of Wisconsin in the dead of winter. The group all agreed that the book, the characters and the settings were often stark, dark and difficult, but they all presented us with topics for a most lively discussion. Nancy literally treated us to all kinds of delicious libations, snacks, cakes and even some Halloween candies we remember from our childhood. The cake, fruit, cheeses and marshmallow Peeps were enjoyed by all, as was her beautiful fall and Hallow-een décor. Those in attendance included Nancy Barnet, Pam Bramhall, Nita Neumeister, Linda Van Etten, Genie Lancaster, Francine Hall, Keena Newland, Marilyn Freeman, Gaye Thomas and Sara Raleigh. Audry Bickwid and Beverly Smith were missed. Thank you, Nancy, for selecting and hosting the book and for faclitating the discussion. We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Book Club Number 1 meets again on November 15 at Nita Neumeister’s to discuss the novel Protect and Defend by Rich-ard North Patterson. Just a reminder: The December holiday book club luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7 at The Olympia Res-taurant on Oleander Avenue. Please bring an unwrapped chil-dren’s book to the luncheon. Genie Lancaster has graciously offered to deliver these books to the selected charity: The Do-mestic Violence Shelter. Please come to the luncheon prepared with suggestions for the reading list for next year and what month you would like to host a meeting. Genie Lancaster will host the first book club meeting of 2012 on January 17 with the novel A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cam-eron

Thank you all, and as Audry would say, happy reading.   #

November Events Start Out Big

On a picture perfect morning over eighty-five members and guests gathered on the deck of The George to pay tribute to the members of the armed forces. The celebration of Veteran's Day began with a few introduc-tory remarks by Cdr Simmons.

The enthusiastic group welcomed Doug Murray (shown at the right) as he inaugu-rated the commemoration ceremony with a brief history of Irving Berlin's patriotic song and prayer, God Bless America.

After a rousing solo, Doug invited all members to join him as strains of God Bless America filled the Riverwalk for all to hear. Full story including the 60th Anniversary of the CFS&PS in the December Foghorn. #

Revealing the Secrets of the Cape Fear and Black Rivers Bill Holub, AP

The day broke a little cool with a touch of crisp at WATER ZERO at the docks in front of the Hilton Hotel in downtown Wilmington. It was 8:00 a.m., Saturday, October 15. Nine boats of various sizes, with their owners and in-vited guests started their engines, cast off, and headed Northwesterly up the Cape Fear River, thus commencing the timely start of the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron adventure called the Cape Fear and Black River Cruise and Raft Up. Participating in this remarkable event were Lt Mark Stacy, AP* and Jean Stacy, S with their guest Cdr. Roger Simmons, SN* aboard Windansea; Mira Fogelman and Dick Patton aboard their 18’ Parker; Lt/C Ben Van Etten, P and Linda with their guests Stan and David Huddle aboard Gotta Go; Ed Cathey, AP and Cyndee Cathey, S with their guests Chris Patterson, S and Donna Patterson, S aboard Dolphin Tales; Doris Smith aboard her 22’ Glastron with LT/C Peter Dahl, JN as her Navigator/Chief Engineer; Larry and Maureen Lambe aboard First Strike; Lt Tom Bello, AP aboard Strike Team ; Lt/C Ed Poucher, JN with his guest Guido Cozzolino, AP aboard Minor Therapy. All were led by Bill Holub, AP who was the Cruise Director for this cruise assisted by his frequent boating companion and friend P/Lt/C Lee Hebner, AP aboard War Eagle.

Nine boats and twenty-two people embarked upon this second to none and not soon to be forgotten river odyssey. The boats fell in line, one after the other, breaking the perfectly calm river surface leaving behind in their wake a magnificent curl of rolling water that gently lapped the shore line as we passed. The railroad bridge at Navassa lifted its aged and rusting structure, as if in a magnificent and stately salute to all the voyagers in our group, allowing for the uninter-rupted passage of our flotilla. We made the turn to starboard and entered the peaceful and majestic waters of the Black

River at about 9:30 a.m. Instead of rafting up at the point originally intended, we journeyed a little farther up river to a location satisfactory to all and began rafting up. Windansea took the initial posi-tion and set its anchor. Then, one by one and as though magnificent steeds taking their position in the gate, the other boats with fenders set and mooring lines at the ready, slowly nestled up to either side, one at a time to complete the raft up. The entire tie up occurred without the first bit of problem or nicked fiberglass. Indeed a credit to the seamanship of all of the captains in the realm. As is the custom, party time ensued. Wonderful food and drink , prepared and brought by all partici-pants, was abundant and shared by all. A wonderful spirit and feeling of fellowship was enjoyed.

During this cruise sights of nature were abundant, the scenery magnifi-cent and sights of the pursuit of hunters for the fleeing deer on this open-ing day of the deer-hunting season were frequent. Many boats were seen with the hunters, their weapons at ready, their dogs and hunting partners and an occasional glimpse of a hunter’s “successful hunt “ lying across the bow in grim repose. The raft up broke up at about 2:00 p.m. in as orderly a manner as it as-sembled, allowing time for those who wished to journey farther up the Black River to do so before heading back down river and home before dark. The cruise concluded without incident. Temperatures were absolutely perfect and the day could not have been more beautiful or the majesty of the rivers more alluring. Nothing could

have been more conducive to the intent of our day. Our gratitude must be given to our maker for providing us with the opportunity to enjoy this magnificence. Please visit the squadron web site to view photos taken and posted by some of the partici-pants of this cruise. I want to thank Mark Stacy for his leadership as Boating Activities Chair in the planning of this and other cruise events for our squadron and for giving me the opportunity to direct this cruise. More importantly, my sincere thanks to each and everyone who helped plan and who participated in this particular cruise. With out you these wonderful events cannot happen. Cruises and raft-ups are great fun. Don’t miss the opportunity to participate. #

Sunshine Report Lt. Jan Hilbert

This month get well cards were sent to R.T. Jones, whom we all know as the downtown Wilmington Dockmaster. We were sorry to hear that he suffered a minor stroke and hope that he has recovered from it. John Gibson had knee surgery and the same speedy recovery is wished for him. We heard from Associate member T.K. Moore’s daughter who told us that her Dad is continuing to improve from his stroke and that he is doing “much better”, so an ‘atta-boy’ card was sent to him from the squadron. We were pleased to hear of his progress and our wish is that he continues to improve. Sadly, a sympathy card was sent to Helen and Neal Lewis in the death of Helen’s Dad, P/C William B. Skelton. We lost our own John Fongers who succumbed to cancer after a very long and brave fight. We sent a card to his widow, Penelope, and their family. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to all. If you know of anyone in need of a card, please call me at 910-350-0902 or sunshinemail [email protected]. #

Halligan’s Book Club Jean Stacy, S

We had a great time at Halligan’s on a beautiful Tuesday, Octo-ber 25th, as we enjoyed good food, good company and a good book. Breakfast with Buddah was definitely thought provoking. Contemplating what is real, what is needed, what is life, can lead to interesting conversation. Thanks, Nita, for having sug-gested this novel. Sue Van Note has recommended Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillen-brand for this November’s reading. With chapter titles like “The Flying Coffin” and “Only the Laundry Knew How Scared I Was”, it promises to be interesting. #

Last Call for PLC Dinner Groups 1Lt Sue VanNote, S We are going to start a new rotation in January with our wonder-ful Pot Luck Club dinner groups. If you have thought about sign-ing up and haven’t done so yet please contact me at [email protected] or 520-4114 ASAP! These groups are a wonderful way to get to know squadron members and become more involved with the club. You also will have such a good time. They are informal and spontaneous and creative. We have all enjoyed our time together these first 6 months. Leaving our new friends will be difficult but we look forward to making more. (The old Girl Scout song----“make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold” cer-tainly applies here.) Why don’t you come and join us and give it a try? I promise you won’t regret your decision. #

We have a request to start Book Club #3!! If you are interested in joining a book club please contact [email protected] or [email protected] and get on the list. We already have 3 ladies who are ready to get started! We also have had a request to get a play reading group started, so if you want to get on that list we can get that underway as well!

Sue VanNote is still taking names and getting ready to shuf-fle the pot luck groups in January – what a roaring success that has turned out to be! And, I am starting to get requests for the fine dining to crank up again – people are missing Sara and Janet’s wonderful efforts in that direction!! Another idea that has been tossed around is a creative writ-ing group where the members take turns adding a sentence to the plot in a story – it sounds like a fun idea to me, and we can get it off the ground if enough people are inter-ested!! And a “bucket list” group has already been a sub group from our pot luck group!! Now if you don’t think you can have some good dinner conversation with that one – think again!! #
