Review the New
With My Hands: Poems About Making Things
by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater
“Lithe, immersive verse,
voiced in the first person,
inspires children to find
solace, joy, and power in their
handiwork...Poetry sparks an
irresistible, primal urge to
twist, cut, paint, draw, glue,
carve, whittle, daub, tie,
hammer, to simply make.”

The Blog Log www.hooverlibrary.org/blog
Día is a nationally
recognized initiative that
emphasizes the importance
of literacy for all children
from all backgrounds. It is
a daily commitment to
linking children and their
families to diverse books,
languages and cultures.
The Building STEAM with
Día booklists were created
by the Association for
Library Service to Children
(ALSC), a division of the
American Library
Association (ALA). Each
list features newer titles
that focus on diversity as
well as science, technology,
engineering, art, and math.
There are lists for K-2nd
grade, 3rd-5th grade, and
6th-8th grade. You can

at Art Hacks on September

based storytime for 3 to
8-year-olds, is also back for
its third season. Every

More Than Common Core Library on Wheels: Mary Lemist Titcomb and America’s
First Bookmobile by Sharlee Glenn
As librarian at the Washington County Free Library in Maryland,
Titcomb was concerned that the library was not reaching all
the people it could. Realizing its limitations and inability to reach
the county’s 25,000 rural residents, including farmers and their
families, she set about to change the library system forever with
the introduction of book-deposit stations throughout the country,
a children’s room in the library, and her most revolutionary idea
of all: a horse-drawn Book Wagon.
Write to Me: Letters from Japanese American Children to
the Librarian They Left Behind by Cynthia Grady
When Executive Order 9066 is enacted after the attack at Pearl
Harbor, children's librarian Clara Breed's young Japanese American
patrons are to be sent to prison camp. Before they are moved, she
asks the children to write her letters and gives them books to take
with them. Through the three years of their internment, the children
correspond with Miss Breed, sharing their stories, providing feedback
on books, and creating a record of their experiences.
