Medicare fraud affects everyone. You can team up with Medicare to help.

Our Senior Medicare Patrol volunteers are teaching people like you how to spot report, and stop fraud, and protect themselves from identity theft. Here are

some things you can do: · Guard your Medicare and Social Security num-bers. Treat them like you would treat your credit cards. · Hang up the

phone if someone calls and asks for your Medicare number, Social Security num-

ber, or bank or credit card information. We will NEVER call and ask for this infor-mation, and we will NEVER call you or come to your home uninvited to sell Med-

icare products. · Be suspicious of anyone who offers you free medical equipment or services and then requests your Medicare number. It’s illegal, and it’s not

worth it! · Do not let anyone borrow or pay you to use your Medicare ID card

or your identity. Check your Medicare claims for errors. Look at your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or statements from your Medicare plan. You can also

check www.MyMedicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) as soon as your claims have been processed. The sooner you see and report errors, the

sooner we can stop fraud. TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048.

· Call 1-800-MEDICARE to report any suspected fraud.

Beware of strangers bearing gifts! Watch out for this credit card scam: You receive a phone call from someone wanting to deliver a package. Shortly after

the call, a uniformed delivery man arrives at your home with a basket of flowers and wine. If you inquire about who sent you the gift, the delivery man will re-

spond that he is only delivering the package and that a card has been sent sepa-rately. The delivery man will explain that because the gift contains alcohol, there

is a "delivery charge" as proof of delivery to an adult, so the sender knows it was

not just left it on the doorstep where it could be stolen. He will not accept cash because the company requires the payment to be by credit or debit card only.

He will ask you to swipe the card on the small mobile card machine and ask you to enter the card's PIN and security number. By doing this you have provid-

ed all the information necessary to use your card. If you provided a

debit card it will be used at ATM machines to access your funds and a bank will not reimburse these charges. WARNING: Be wary of accept-

ing any "surprise gift or package" that you neither expected nor per-sonally ordered, especially if a payment is a condition of receiving the

gift or package. Also, never accept anything if the sender is not person-ally known by you or if there is no proper identification of who the

sender is. Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information is when you yourself initiated the pur-chase or transaction! Denver DA’s Fraud Line: 720‐913‐9179

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST NUTRITIOUS CANNED FOODS?

Canned salmon Topping the list is this fish rich in omega-3 fatty

acids. It's actually better for you when canned because it’s packed

with the bones, meaning more calcium available for your bones

and teeth. Also, some of the fat is removed, making it a healthy

option. Canned pinto, kidney, black, garbanzo, black-eyed

(peas) beans There is basically no difference between the nutritional

value of canned and fresh -beans; both require cooking for similar

Amounts of time. The canned beans are much more convenient and

can easily be added to soups or stews. They’re a good source of fiber,

folate, magnesium, protein, and vitamin B1 as well as many other

minerals. Remember to rinse them to decrease the sodium.

Canned tomatoes Because lycopene, the antioxidant component of

the tomato, becomes more powerful when heated, canned tomatoes

are a good source of lycopene and also rich in vitamins A and C.

Look for low sodium versions. Canned sardines Like salmon and

mackerel, sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Go for a low-

sodium option packed in water. Sardines are a good choice of fish

because they are sustainable and inexpensive, and they contain high

amounts of vitamin B12, which benefit heart health. Canned

pumpkin and sweet potatoes Avoid the canned pumpkin pie

filling that is packed with sugar and other ingredients. Go for

natural canned pumpkin flesh, which is low in calories, high in fiber

and fat-free. It contains lots of vitamin A, and also magnesium,

vitamin C, and some iron. Since canned pumpkin has less water than

the fresh variety, some of these vitamins and nutrients are actually

more concentrated. Canned chicken and Tuna Like salmon, tuna is

high in omega-3 fatty acids. Canned cooked chicken/tuna are packed

with protein, iron, niacin, and low in fat and calories. Be careful:

olives are very high in sodium! Look for Reduced Sodium Versions

of Canned Vegetable juice, Soups, (Spaghetti) Sauces, and Vegetables

(or drain and rinse for 10 seconds under cool water) For more
