President’s Message
Our President, Judith Prince, was featured on the cover
page in the Wednesday, June 11th edition of City People
in the Greenville News. The headline read “Dr. Judith
Prince shares enthusiasm for Rotary Club’s mission”.
Almost one year ago, I stood before you as Rotary’s “poster child.” My own experiences with
polio, Alzheimer’s, and literacy shaped my service as president of the Rotary Club of Greenville. I
shared three goals with you at that time: to increase the satisfaction of every member with the
Rotary Club of Greenville; to focus the efforts of Rotary; and to engage as many as possible in the
work of Rotary.
To increase satisfaction, we have provided programs and other services that would enhance your
experience as Rotarians. Programs have included panel presentations, President Teddy Roosevelt,
and a wide range of speakers. Special music from the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, the Fine
Arts Center, and the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities was scheduled throughout the
year. We held two Leadership Connection events as well. Immediately after the final meeting on
June 24th, you will be sent a Satisfaction Survey electronically to share your thoughts about this
year. Most of all, your satisfaction will be measured by how many of you bring in new members and continue your
membership in the Rotary Club!
In terms of focusing our efforts, we have changed some service projects and are slowly decreasing support for others.
This year, through Rotary Charities, our club awarded a “Service Above Self” Scholarship for $5000 and one grant for
$15,000, assuring that our impact would be felt in these two service areas. The Rotary Club of Greenville must continue
to focus its work on Rotary’s six areas of service.
The third goal of engaging as many members as possible in the services and work of Rotary is the most critical. Serving
on committees, working at Holiday Lights, and supporting our club through donations to C. A. R.T and the Rotary
Foundation are all important. Inviting guests and asking them to become members of our club is crucial to our ability to
continue to serve both locally and internationally. Each of you who have sponsored a new member will receive special
recognition at the first meeting in July 2014.
Paul Harris wrote almost 80 years ago, “This is a changing world; we must be prepared to change with it. The story of
Rotary will have to be written again and again.” Truly, this has been a year of change. The Rotary Family Literacy
Center closed, and we continue to work on a new partnership with the Greenville Literacy Association (GLA). With
53,000 citizens in Greenville without a high school diploma and as basic education and literacy is one of Rotary’s six
areas of focus, a partnership with GLA is absolutely necessary for both of us to reach our goals. A new Rotary Club of
Greenville website was launched. Rotary must continue to evolve to meet needs!
Thank you to each and every member of the Rotary Club of Greenville for giving me a year that I will long remember.
Thank you for making this a year in which by working together I know that we have changed lives.
Judith S. Prince
President

Rotary Club of Greenville – 2014
“Service Above Self” Scholarship Winner
Ellen Featherstone
Ellen Featherstone, the daughter of Richard and Leslie Featherstone, recently
graduated from James L. Mann High School with Highest Honors. She is a
Palmetto Fellows recipient and is an AP Scholar of Distinction.
While a student at Mann, Ellen was involved in many extra-curricular activities,
including National Honor Society, student council, Fellowship of Christian
Athletes, as well as playing on the Mann tennis team for 5 years. She lettered in
both academics and tennis.
From an early age, Ellen has been involved in community service. She joined
Girl Scouts in kindergarten and learned to serve her community through food
drives, making blankets for the homeless, visiting seniors in nursing homes, and
many other acts of service. While service is a large component of scouting,
leadership is as well. From an early age Ellen learned to plan scouting events for younger troops along with her peers,
and eventually would take on the sole responsibility of leadership and service to complete the highest award in scout-
ing, the GS Gold Award. Ellen’s gold project entailed the refurbishment of a GAIHN home in the Greenville commu-
nity. This sustainable project allows families to remain intact while experiencing homelessness.
Ellen’s relationship with the GAIHN community was rekindled when she became the Vice President of Service for the
National Honor Society. Plans were made to “flip” a transitional home that was within the JL Mann community. In
the course of two days, the house was cleaned, repainted, and landscaped.
As a member of student council, Ellen helped to raise money for Spirit Week charities that included Arizona
Children’s Charities, the Cancer Survivors Park, and J. L. Mann’s after school tutoring program.
Ellen participated in the Class 7 of Youth Leadership Greenville and gave back to her community as a Park Hero with
Greenville Recreation Dept. She also participated in the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program and Student
Athlete Leadership Program.
Ellen is active in her church serving as a Sunday school leader, a church basketball volunteer, and participating in the
LEAD team for youth ministry.
In her spare time, Ellen enjoys reading and photography as well as hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Ellen will be attending the Calhoun Honors College at Clemson University in the fall where she will pursue a degree
in Bioengineering. Studying disease on a cellular level is of particular interest to Ellen, and she plans to continue graduate
study in pathology and/or epidemiology.
Ellen Featherstone receives the first Rotary “Service Above Self” Scholarship.
The Rotary Club of Greenville does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, or age in the recruitment and consideration of applicants for the scholarship program.
