    VOLUME 56 EASTER 2013The Scarlian

    3

The FARMA (National Farmers Retail and Markets Association) Awards recognize excellence across the farm retail

sector. They look for people and businesses that exhibit a passion for local food, outstanding examples of customer

service, solid business performance and a commitment to their local community and the environment.

These are industry awards, judged by peers and retail experts. Each farming business submits a detailed application

form and are then assessed by an independent mystery shopper before each business on a shortlist is visited by at least

one, often two, members of the judging panel and invited to provide more in-depth information, before the winners are

    decided upon.

The Awards culminate at the prestigious Award Ceremony, this year held in Harrogate, Yorkshire, where the winners

are announced, and presented with their Award by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who is also patron of FARMA.

    NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

Looking through this edition of THE SCARLIAN you will findinformation about the different events being planned for this year and

I hope you will all support those people who are giving their time andenergy to organise these. As the old saying goes: A little help isworth a lot of pity and nothing is more true in a small village such asours. Leaving it all to a few (often the same) people limits what canbe achieved.

I have been constantly surprised at past successes when it comes to mounting eventsand fund-raising in the village, but so much more could be done ifeveryScarlian rolled uptheir sleeves and had a go! Of course, personal circumstances and commitments takepriority but just a small input can make a difference. Please think about how YOU could bemore involved.

On behalf of everyone I want to congratulate Anita and her team ontheir achievement in winning the UKs Best Small Farm Shopcompetition. It really is something to cheer about when you realise howmany shops took part from all parts of the country! Well done!

Early in March, Anita held an Open Day to celebrate and the manyvisitors enjoyed light refreshments outside the shop. The photograph onthe right shows EASY BOB REID tuning up to provide some musicalentertainment on his ukulele.

Finally, best wishes to to CONNIE NOBLE who has just celebrated her 90th birthday!

SOUTH SCARLE ON AIR !On Friday 25th January, BBC Radio

    Nottingham presenter, SARAH JULIAN,

interviews with Scarlians for inclusion in the

    stations Sunday morning Faith slot.

The interviews were broadcast on Sunday

commented on various aspects of the current plans for the building.

The second segment in the programme at

08.50am was with JUDY MUIRHEAD whose

    underlined everyones comments about the

need for St. Helenas to be preserved for

future generations and hence the proposedformation of a Community Space within the

    church.

It was surprising how much feedback was

received from family and friends who just

happened to s tumble ac ross the

    DAN OFF TO ICELAND

    .....and hes not after

    frozen food!

Dan Jones, 14, who lives at Corner Farm

House, has been awarded a place on a

World Challenge Expedition to Iceland in

2014. To be selected he had to write a

paragraph on what he could bring to the

expedition; he called on his team building

experience as current captain of SleafordUnder 14s rugby team and his interest in

nature and the amazing sights around the

world to show he was the man for the job.

The Challenge will take Dan to Reykavik

from where he will be taken to walk the

Laugavegur Trail. This is a five day trek

across black sand and pumice deserts,

through volcanic mountains and by hot

springs and obsidian fields. Dan cant wait

to see such fantastic natural phenomena

and start his trek, but before that the real

work begins as he has to raise the costof his trip - 1,100.

Some South Scarlians may have had a slip

of paper already from Dan asking for any

odd jobs you might have that Dan can do to

earn his dues. Steve and Mary Finn have

already employed Dan to shift logs and getrid of some garden rubbish. Steve says Dan

worked really hard and would definitely

recommend him as a conscientious worker.

You may recall Dans sister, Hannah, was

raising money throughout 2009 for a World

Challenge trip to Morocco. Without the

generous help of South Scarlian residents

Hannah would have found it much more

difficult to raise her money, so if you have

any jobs for Dan, be it grass cutting, car

washing, painting there is no end to the

list! - Just give him a call on 01636

    893377.

SPRING may seem long delayed for us but for the birds it is here! If you look at our

little garden birds, they have all put on finery for courting. The Blue Tits are so much moreblue, the Goldfinches are feathery jewels in red and gold and as for the Chaffinches, well they not only look fabulous but about now they start picking fights with the other guys, even when the other guy is their own reflection in your wing mirror! The Dawn Chorus ispretty darned fine right now too. You dont even need to get up, just open your windowaround six a.m. and listen.

We are well blessed with many lovely native trees including Ash. As one who wellremembers the impact of Dutch Elm Disease I would ask you all to keep an eye on ourAsh trees. Ash Die Back needs to be reported if it is spotted. The Woodland Trust has anexcellent website which will give you all the information you need.

    The Early Bird

    SPRING IS ALREADY HERE . . . . . for the birds!

    SCARLIAN LADS COMPETE

    IN SCHOOLS

    CROSS COUNTRY

There is more news from Corner Farm House

(see Page 5) - Dans brothers, Ben and Joe

qualified to run in the English Schools Cross

Country race held in Derbyshire earlier in

March. The boys attend Sir Robert Pattinson

Academy in North Hykeham so they both

    represented the Lincolnshire Squad.

Early risers in South Scarle may have seen a

tall fluorescent figure accompanied by two

smaller fluorescent figures bounding along the

roads with an enthusiastic ginger bullet (Pip the

dog). With some natural ability and a lot of hard

work, the two boys have worked their way up

from their school cross country, through the Lincoln and District area race and Anglian

schools race, achieving top ten places in the Lincolnshire County team to qualify to run at

National level. This can be put into context when you consider there are between sevenand eight thousand under-15 boys attending school in Lincolnshire. Two of our residents

are in the eight fastest runners amongst them. An achievement for our small village

to be proud of! Both boys ran incredibly well and both improved on their county positions

    by two places.

JOE and BEN after their run. Joe

    was the first Lincolnshire runner

    and Ben was the sixth.

A large crowd of well-wishers squashed into the Parish Room on Saturday evening 23rd Marchto celebrate Connie Nobles 90th birthday. Connie thanks everyone for the gifts, cards & flowers.
