Things are generally going well, but I still seri- ously miss dancing. It was lovely to see many of you in Pleasanton and at the October monthly party and I look forward to Asilomar and spending a couple weeks up north during the holidays. Fortunately a lot of dancing seems to happen that time of year. I did find an Irish ceili group that meets once a month, which isn’t exactly the same but is a pretty good substitute. I also still hold out hope that I might be able to get something going in the spring, but I really haven’t had much time to think about it. On October 8th, the day after the monthly party, the fires ignited that devastated Sonoma and Napa counties and particularly San- ta Rosa. I could only watch in horror as beloved areas of my hometown were reduced to ashes. The clean-up from this disas- ter is now beginning, but it will be a long process of recovery. At least four families from the Scottish dance community have been displaced, along with countless others in the community. If you want to help, consider attending and donating to the Santa Rosa class fundraiser (details on page 6). Please keep sending articles and photos for use in the newsletter. I like to include things other than fliers, but I don’t have much time to write content myself these days. With the Asilomar Workshop and Ball well in hand, The Branch Committee has been focusing on our local Ball: the Winter Ball. Ellen Lovell and the ball committee has done a fantastic job making arrangements for this special event, including finding a new venue for the ball. The Scottish Rite Center, where the Valentine’s Ball has been held since 1979, has been priced out of our budget. After exploring twenty venues, the Orchard Pavilion at Sunnyvale Community Center was selected for the inaugural Winter Ball. The Orchard Pavilion has several advantages over the Scottish Rite Center, including plentiful safe parking.

The Branch Committee has undertaken updating and improving the Branch website. Several comments have been received on the difficulty using the Branch calendar. There are also several other areas of the website which need updating. The website is for our members and dancers as well as perspective dancers. If you have comments or suggestions about the Branch website, please send them to me ([email protected]).

At the September meeting, Grant Bennett was appointed as Branch treasurer, taking over from Sylvain Pelletier. We are grateful that Grant, an accountant, has taken this position in the Branch.

On 4 November, the Society AGM will be held in Perth, Scotland. Delegates from the Branch are: Mindy Brown-Lechner, Bradley Hobbs, Don MacQueen, Sharon Stewart, Donna Weidenfeller, Salina Welch and Geoffrey Wood. Our branch has seven votes based on our membership numbers. If we fall below 300 members, we will be reduced to six votes. Each Branch is granted two votes mini-mum, then one extra vote for every additional fifty members (or portion thereof) over the initial fifty members.

This year we vote on candidates for the Management Board. Elections for the Membership Services, Education & Training and Youth Services Committees were uncontested. Any RSCDS member can run for any of these committees.

As many of you may have noticed at the Pleasanton Highland Gathering & Games, the Jordanhill stage (high stage) was damaged by the winter rains. George Nesbitt, assisted by the Alameda Fairgrounds crew, affected repairs to the dance platform. Thanks to George, we were able to conduct the adjudications. The stage will still need more permanent repairs as well as a replacement storage cover.

Our next meeting is Saturday 4 November. The agendas are always posted on the Branch Website (under “Branch Resources”). All members are welcomed to attend Branch Committee meetings.

Donna Weidenfeller—San Francisco Class

In the mid 1980’s I visited a friend in Ireland who suggested we fly over to Edinburgh for the weekend. We had a great time and I vowed to return someday soon. Meanwhile back in SF I saw one of Susie Langdon Kass’ flyers posted at UCSF. The class was on one of my few evenings off from work so decided on the heels of my Edinburgh visit I would give Scottish Country dancing a try; that is, me and my 2 left feet! That was the beginning of my dance history. And yes, I did return to Edinburgh a few years later and have been dancing in Scotland, Europe, and United States since. AND by the way I met this wonderful Scottish dancer named Harry Andrews who is now my dance and life partner!
