The Panel:

Wednesday night a discussion was held led by Ray Duffield and a panel of young and older Rotarians to decipher their reactions to the structure of our meetings and whether change is needed or welcomed. The “Invocation” was scrutinised as maybe being a touch outdated with the wording “Lord we give thanks, Amen”. In our diverse society where religious beliefs differ so and the many cultures that are now within our communities, that this line may be omitted and we thank Australia. Should we sing the National Anthem at the beginning of each meeting? (Only if Ray leads!) Do we have good fellowship at our meetings? Remembering that fellowship was why Rotary began in the beginning, most agreed that our club excels in this area, maybe because we all have humour! Should we gong a speaker if they go too long or are not interesting? This was controversial as we may have a time limit which allows us to stop a speaker but who decides what is not interesting?? What one person may feel as boring another may find a mutual interest and enjoy. Who has ever seen a guest speaker gonged?? Would you class that as rude?? Personally, I feel that it should be remembered why Rotary began in the first instance, and before any changes are made that ALL members mutually agree and change isn’t forced upon us through any individual or “Political Correctness” which can be rampant in our society today. If anyone feels that a specific aspect or structure of the club needs to be altered that they communicate this to the President so it can be discussed openly, as honest communication is the only way any organisation can move forward and continue.

Rotary Foundation by Martin Monk

Through Rotary Foundation grants and programs, Rotarians and other donors help change the world. Rotary clubs and districts are providing clean water, improving the environment, sponsoring scholarships, and helping reach Rotary’s No. 1 goal, eradication polio. PolioPlus Rotarians have mobilised by the hundreds of thousands to eradicate polio. They’re working to ensure that children are immunised against the crippling disease, despite weak infrastructure, extreme poverty, and civil strife prevailing in many countries. Since the PolioPlus program began in 1985, more than 2 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge is the Rotary Foundation’s response to $355 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help wipe out polio. Every dollar given the PolioPlus counts toward the $200 million match. District Simplified Grants support the local and international service activities of Rotary districts. Matching Grants provide matching funds for the international service projects of Rotary clubs and districts. Ambassadorial Scholarships send undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad while supporting Rotary’s mission to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace. Group Study Exchange (GSE) supports travel for teams of non-Rotarians from a variety of professions. Rotary hosts organise an itinerary of vocational, educational, and cultural points of interest. Rotary Peace Fellowships support graduate students and professionals in fields related to peace and conflict resolution. Each year, up to 110 fellows study at one of the Rotary Peace Centres around the globe. Future Vision Through Its Future Vision Plan, The Rotary Foundation is creating a new grant model to enhance its support of club and district humanitarian and educational projects. A three year pilot began in July 2010, with 100 Rotary districts testing the grant model. All districts will transition to the new grant structure in July 2013. How Does It Work? Under Future Vision, the Foundation offers two types of grants. District grants are block grants that enable clubs and districts to address immediate needs in their communities and abroad. Global grants offer opportunities to participate in strategically focused, high-impact activities within the six areas of focus. Global grants rage from $30,000 to $400,000. What Is Your Vision For A Better World? The Rotary Foundation enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support education, and the alleviation of poverty.

Reports

Community: Leo Congratulations to Warracknabeal secondary College on the leadership programme run in conjunction with the Student representative Council. I represented Rotary on a tour of the college and was most impressed by the leadership skills of the College student leaders as I have been on other occasions eg Anzac Day .Rural communities need to recognise that the few young people who chose to stay in our communities need leadership training as they are our potential leaders and it would be a very worthwhile investment from Rotary to collaborate with the Secondary college to support a leadership programme. Youth: Lee Tuesday workers are: Judy, Sue, Jack, Calvin, Leo.

Fellowship: Leora Following on from last week at the Fire Station – more accolades must go to everyone who helped put the tables and chairs away, leaving the venue the way we found it. To Joan Bentley again for washing the floors and taking home the tablecloths to launder. We had a great time in Mildura knowing that this had all been taken care of. On a different matter my thanks to Joan again who has done a great job washing and ironing all our small Rotary Banners ready for them to be put on new material. To everyone who contributed to Australian Rotary Health, thank you. The sum of $103-00 was made which will be forwarded onto them. Gavan: Is resigning from the RYLA Committee at District level this year. Anyone interested in joining this committee please speak with Gavan who will direct you on how to join. RYLA is very rewarding as you see the results, please consider this opportunity.

Thumbs Up!! Great report Aisha on Rotex on the night. Well done keep the good work up you’re a great ambassador for the Rotary Club of Warracknabeal.

COIN TOSSER / HEADS & TAILS.

If you are the designated “tosser for the night” you will find the tossing gear on the head table (hopefully placed there by the sergeant). Only one coin is tossed, so members have to have two hands on their head or their tail. They cannot have one hand on each. Toss the coin high and make it spin. The last person standing wins, and gets to choose the prize, (usually a bottle of wine or soft drink). This is then shared with his or her table to promote fellowship. It is the coin tosser’s job to make sure the prize and accessories are delivered to the winning table. Do not just go and sit down thinking your job is done when the winner has been decided.

VOTE OF THANKS Your first priority is to make sure that you are in possession of the gift for the guest speaker. This is best done before you commence the club’s vote of thanks. It is also your duty to make sure that you are in possession of a pen and paper on which to write prompts unless you have an extremely good memory. Generally you move the vote of thanks, hand over the goodies them ask the club to join you in acclamation, job done. P.S. the president does not have to thank the guest speaker for a second time. He/she may acknowledge their attendance BUT THAT’S IT.
