The Fall has continued the good luck in

all endeavors for the NCWFA Gang!

Show ring excitement for pretty Vesper whippet (Erin

Campbell): She was awarded Best in Show at the Two

Cities KC in Yuba City! Vesper was also BOB at our

Specialty for the second year in a row! Vesper is sitting

comfortably at # 8 in the Top Whippet rankings, with

many big wins over the last few months.

Skye whippet (Sharron Simmons), who is Vesper’s sis-

ter, is continuing on her march to her own champion-

ship. Skye was BW at Santa Barbara for her third major

& then repeated this feat at Skyline KC on our Specialty

weekend for her fourth major win.

At our Specialty show it was a almost a clean NCWFA

sweep! Vesper (Erin Campbell) BOB, Peaches

(Charlotte & Martha Fielder) BOW, WB & Best BBE, and

Simon (Andrea Meyer) WD! Peaches

completed her CH with her win! Yay

Us!

Peaches’ bro Boss (Charlotte & Martha

Fielder) won 2 BOBs at the shows in

September & was Select Dog at our

Specialty!

Crazy Pandora (Debby Knutson) won

another point at the Mensona KC in

September!

Baby puppy “William” (Charlotte & Martha Fielder) was

Best Beginner Puppy in Show at Sir Francis Drake KC!

Cute Disco (Che Rivera) won a couple of show ring

points in September & November & made a great part-

ner with Audrey in Junior Showmanship. Disco was al-

so High Score FTE at our race meet!

In other show news, Finis (Ed & MJ Odron) ended up

2016 at the # 8 Whippet in the Owner/Handler rankings.

Finis won Best OH in show in Sonora (and a “regular”

Group 3) & RBIS OH at Dixon to finish off her year. Way

to go Finis & Ed!

Those fabulous and fast Wyndsor sisters are burning

up the track and coursing field this fall! Little Skylar

(Rick Ragan & Kim Robinson) picked up 3 more ARX

points at our fall meets & sister Shayla (Jean Balint)

was awarded her first two ARX points that weekend al-

so. Shalya also picked up a five-point major at our No-

vember lure trial. Bitsy (Jean Balint), the third sister, is

proving that coursing is really her thing, with both ma-

jors (4 & 5) and another three single points in her first

two weekends of competition. Way to go girls!

Carson (Erynn Lucas) also triumphed at our November

lure trial. He won a very tough run off for two more

points towards his DC! Carson was also in the Top Ten

at both of our CWA race meets and was High Combined

on Sunday! Carson also was awarded two BOBs at the

shows and a Group Three in September!

Captain (Charlotte & Martha Fielder) made

all of us very, very happy when he won a

four-point major and completed his FC title

in October! All Rover can say is —- FINAL-

LY!

Big Mo (Cheryl Boyer) completed her NW 2

title in October!

Sunny (Delia Zarges) completed his CGC

title & is ready to begin his new career as a

Therapy Dog!

rywhere, so send your brags & news to

her @ [email protected]!

Paust.

The meeting was called to order at 12:43 by

President Debby Knutson. Debby welcomed

all to the meeting. The minutes of the August

meeting were accepted as presented in

SPEED.

Officer's Reports:

Treasurer's Report: Dee presented the bank

balance which was a hair under 25 K, includ-

ing the Club PayPal account. The June lure

trial was profitable to the tune of $950.

Committee Reports:

Coursing: Jen reported that all the AKC ap-

provals are in place for the next events,

scheduled for November 5-6 in Dixon. Our

judges will be Beth Levine of Washington for

both days, with Gail Burnham on Saturday &

Ginny Koscinski on Sunday. Jean will be in

charge of the lunches both days.

Events/Show: MJ reminded us that the trailer

will not be at the show grounds this October,

so she has ordered extra tables for lunch and

the auction. Dee reminded all they could bring

auction items to her early or she could ar-

range pick up. MJ asked that any people who

could arrive early on Saturday to help with set

up of our lunch area and trophy table would

be appreciated.

Racing: Bonnie reminded all about our events

for next weekend. We need foul judges for

both days & a lure operator for Sunday. Jean

will be in charge of the lunch both days.

Rescue: Guin reported on a 13-year-old bitch

at San Jose Animal Services. She just

learned about this dog this morning, so this is

a developing situation and she might need

help from our South Bay members for pick

up.

Old Business: Nominating Committee: Guin

presented the slate of Officer's for 2017. The

slate is a reprise of the 2016 officers as all

would like to serve again. The slate will be

voted on at our next meeting.

Next meeting: The next meeting will be our

Annual Meeting at the Specialty on October

22nd.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 PM.

Members Present: Jean Balint, Guin Borstel,

ter, Libby deMille, Charlotte Fielder, Martha

Delia Zarges.

Guests Present: Stacey Davis, Candace

Gore, Kerry Elenitoba-Johnson, Daniel Lock-

hart.

The meeting was called to order by President

Debby Knutson at 3:30 PM. Debby thanked

our judges Elena Edwards & Stacey Davis &

congratulated the winners. She asked every-

one present to introduce themselves. The

minutes of the last meeting could not be ac-

cepted because they have not yet been pub-

lished.

Officer's Reports:

Treasurer's Report: Dee reported that today's

auction made $799, with about $100 worth of

items with payment still outstanding.

Committee Reports:

Coursing: Bonnie reported for Jen that all is

in readiness for our Nov 5-6 coursing event in

Dixon. Entries are coming in already for these

events.

Events/Show: MJ wanted to thank all our

members, for our show is a community effort.

Todd, Donna, and Delia do all the set up in

the morning & everyone pitches to help where

ever needed. Steve brought over the boxes

and ring markers from Kim. Lunch, coordinat-

ed by Donna, was great as usual.

Racing: Jean reported that our September

race meets had our highest entries ever! We

are ready for next June already!

Rescue: Guin reported on Penny, a 13-year-

old owner surrender (they were "moving") at

the San Jose shelter. Guin thanked Che for

getting Penny out of the pound & Dee & Dana

for fostering her for the last few weeks. Pen-

ny is a doll! It looks like Penny has a home

with some former NCWFA members who

have adopted several rescues over the last

twenty years. There are two older male whip-

pets, the last of Luca Carbone's Jaguar dogs

(Luca passed away), at the SF SPCA. The

SPCA had three females from Luca's and

they were all placed. Kerry introduced Aria,

who is one of the SPCA girls that Kerry and

family adopted.

Old Business: No old business presented.

New Business: MJ opened discussion on the

Club trailer not being at the Specialty. The

trailer was not brought to the Specialty this

year as an experiment. Unfortunately the ex-

periment did not work. Several trees have

been removed from our luncheon area and it

was very hot at midday today. We need the

canopies from the trailer in case of warm

weather or rain the day of our event. Discus-

sion ensued regarding the need for the trailer

at the show. It was decided that Kim would

purchase some more plastic totes for the re-

mainder of the flower boxes & ring markers,

and they can then go back into the trailer.

Ed opened a discussion on Brad's behalf

about Brad's request for taking both of our

lure machines to Denver in April as back up

for the National lure trials. Brad will take as

he is driving and this will entail no expense for

Because of the

tragic accident that

occurred at our

meet, I find it diffi-

cult to write this

race report. The

day started out

promising with a

excellent entry of

40 dogs. Everyone

was thrilled that

our wonderful Ca-

nadian friends

were here partici-

pating in our meet.

They are truly great

people and always bring something special to our events. It

was shocking and upsetting to all, when in the fourth race,

Fireworks Thunderstruck (Pirate Pete) had a freak accident at

the finish line and was killed. Pete was owned and dearly

loved by his owners Barb Barkley and Howard Wirsch. It is

impossible to put into words the sadness and grief that these

two dear people were feeling when they realized what had

happened. All we could do was offer them our sympathy and

support.

The meet did continue but all the joy had gone from the day.

The eventual meet winner was Lucky who ran well and was

deserving of his win. Litter brothers Cosmo and Ranger were

second and third. Ranger

got the top ARX points and

finished his race title.

Many congratulations to

Ahren his very happy own-

er. Fourth place went to

our Canadian boy, Gibson.

This young dog shows a lot

of potential for future rac-

ing. His litter sister, Skylar

was Best Opposite Sex and

got the second set of

championship points. Sixth

place went to Merry, who

also got a point and was High Score FTE. Nami ran really well

and got the seventh spot. Miss Bennett, Carson and Arrow

rounded out a strong running top ten.

We want to give a special thank you to Barb Barkley who

wanted to fulfill her assignment to judge our match. Her

placements were Beautiful Baillie, Handsome Niko, Pretty

Nami, and cute, cute Peaches. Congratulations to Diane John-

son on Nami being our High Score Combined dog in the meet.

Many, many thanks to everyone who pulled together to make

this traumatic day into a successful event.

Our Sunday meet had another strong entry of 37 adult start-

ers. The competition was tough between litter mates Strega

and Lucky. Strega ran hard and eventually finished top dog in

the meet. Lucky finished a close second. Racing well again, our

Canadian entry, Gibson, took third place. Best Opposite Sex in

meet went to another Canadian entry, Cha-Cha. She ran so

well and made her owners, Barb and Howard very proud and

happy. Three nice running bitches, Nami, Shayla and Skylar

took the fifth, sixth and seventh spot. Eighth place went to

our high scoring show champion, Carson. Leonard and Boss

rounded out the final placements in our top ten.

Today's match was judged by Libby de Mille. She had four

lovely dogs in her final placements, Dallas, Carson, Boss and

Disco. Disco was also high score FTE so he had a really good

start to his CWA race career. The high score combined dog in

meet was won by Carson. He is owned by a very proud and

happy Erynn Lucas.

I would like to thank everyone for bringing the delicious food

for our pot luck lunches. Both days the dishes were greatly

enjoyed by all. The barbecue on Saturday was a huge suc-

cess. Many thanks go to our Canadian cooks, Peter and How-

ard, who beautifully prepared our hot dogs and hamburgers.

Many people worked very hard to make this a successful

weekend. Todd Willhoyte and Erynn Lucas stepped up in

time of need and did a great job running the lure. I ex-

tend a big thank you to them both. Our fabulous team of

Kim and Ed did their usual fantastic job running the box-

es and the paddock. The finish line crew, Mary Jean, Deb-

by, Guin and Andrea were great and very dependable.

Set up and take down workers, Todd, Rick R, Rick K, Ste-

ve, Ed, Peter, Howard, Steve Nunes, Che, Erynn, and Ti-

na. Conformation judges Barb Barkley and Libby de

Mille. Trophy donors Bonnie Moore and Marrianne Lu.

Our incredible lure return operator David Kay and lastly

Charlotte Fielder and our great race secretary Bonnie

Moore. To each of you my sincere thanks and apprecia-

tion for everything you did to make things go so smooth-

ly and efficiently.

I look forward to next season when we will resume our

wonderful CWA race meets.

It Started With A Boy…

Our journey to Whippet bliss strangely started with John

Zinsmaster (Brat’s husband) that I worked with. I was originally

involved with Rat Terriers, and John was always after me to get a

Whippet. A while after John and Brat moved to Phoenix, I emailed

John and asked who I should contact about Whippets nearby. He

directed me to Jean Balint, who I worked with previously (at the

same place I worked with John at) and got in touch with her. We

re-established ourselves with Jean (I knew she had Whippets back

in the late 80’s), and through talking with her, and Kim’s initial

contact with Andrea Meyer was led to Erin Campbell, a veterinari-

an and breeder.

Kim and I went to Erin’s house on a Saturday afternoon and met

her pack and a beautiful 11-month-old red whippet named Buzz.

We were in love with the boy instantly. We talked and hung with

Erin and her kids for a while, went home, talked about it, and

picked him up the next day. When taking him home, Kim and I

stopped at a park to let Buzz (Niko) leash run around for a bit. We

thought we had a wild stallion on our hands. Needless to say, we

got him home, and he assimilated quickly with us and Kim's two

Bichons.

We then started on our show and racing journey with Niko right

off the bat, and were immediately immersed into a fun and social

journey that took us to Las Vegas, Abbotsford, BC and many

points in between. Niko’s AKC showing gained some points won

with me showing him. His final major was won with the gracious

assistance of Marrianne Lu this past June. It was a wonderful day

that was shared with a boisterous crowd of our whippet family and

it was a well-deserved win for our beautiful boy.

Niko is a delight to have around. Loves chasing the bunny, the

companionship of our two girls, us and his whippet family. We are

proud of his Championship accomplishment, and the support of

all of our club members. We are blessed to have Niko Bella and

our whippet family in our lives. Our newly established friendships

and involvement in club activities have enriched our lives greatly.

We cherish all our kids and our dear friends greatly.
