An anti-smoking campaign was launched by a

group of first year medical students with the

aim to raise awareness on how to quit smok-

ing. It was tailored to the entire Alfaisal family

and in particular, the students. The idea

stemmed from a community medicine course

project by Imad Alabdulrazzak and Zuhoor

Alsomali. The campaign was affiliated with

Naqa’a, an anti-smoking charity. The program

also had assistance from Dr. Muhammad

Hamdi of Naqa’a and the Dean of the Col-

lege of Medicine, Dr. Khaled Al-Kattan.

One of the important benefits of quitting

smoking is that no matter how old you are or

how long you’ve been smoking, when you

quit you’ll improve your health. At the same

time, quitting reduces the risks of lung cancer

and other diseases. Not only that, but quitting

can make your skin look younger and even

reduce problems with sex.

If you don’t smoke, it’s important to encour-

age others to stop and stay away from places

associated with smoking. For smokers, it’s

helpful to have a piece of gum or candy in

your pocket to put in your mouth whenever

you have cravings. Most importantly, don’t

give up—it often takes a lot of time before one

is successful but it’s important to keep trying.

If you're a smoker and intend to quit, remem-

ber the acronym START: Set a quit date. Tell

family and friends that you plan on quitting

and you’ll need their support. Anticipate for

the tough times you'll face while quitting. Re-

move cigarettes from your home, car, and

place of work, and finally, Talk to your doctor

about getting help to quit.

First place winner Osama Mustafa car-ried by Mohammed AlSaadoon

Osama Mustafa (left) Vs Abdulmuhsin Alqasabi (right) during the final round

One of the best methods to hold ac-tivities at Alfaisal is to organize the event through your committee. That’s exactly what the Business Student Association (BSA) did on De-cember 9th, 2012. The association hosted the first ever Table Tennis Tournament at Alfaisal Univer-sity. What made this tournament extra special was the fact that this university offers a gallery of skilled players. A common joke around campus is that when you graduate from Alfaisal you get a degree in your major, but you also are trained to be an Olympian as well. The BSA hosted the three day tournament con-sisting of 16 players and were generous to offer free Red Bull energy drinks to all. Chants were hailing the players. Even security came to quiet down the groups. But to no success, the specta-tors rallied on, and the competition heated up. On the last day, Omar Mansour was set to play Mohammad Hijazi for 3rd place. Abdulmohsen Al-Qasabi and Osama Mustafa were to battle for 1st place. Omar and Mohammad played first, and although Omar fought the good fight, Mohammad claimed 3rd place. All that was left now was the final between Abdulmohsen and

Osama, this time everyone circled around the table; if you weren’t in the circle, you wouldn’t have been able to watch the match as Osama took the glory home. The fans then carried Osama on their shoulders and paraded him in the café area, and right beside him also being carried by the fans was 2nd place winner, Abdulmohsen. This was a true showcase of class and sportsmanship. Well done BSA!
