Please plan to attend the Water Communion service and share your stories with us. In the meantime, have a safe, restful, and enjoyable summer! ~Forrest Halford, Water Communion coordinator

Water Communion and Ingathering Service

On August 19 we will celebrate our annual Water Communion and Ingathering service. This service is a ritual at many UU churches, usually

N THE LAST ISSUES OF THE NEWSLETTER, WE CELEBRATED OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY BY TAKING A LOOK AT THE PREPARATION WE

MADE FOR (1)SEARCHING FOR A FULL-TIME, SETTLED MINISTER AND (2) DESIGNING AN EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY BUILDING WITH A FELLOWSHIP HALL.

Honoring the Past

January–March 2009

The Ministerial Search Committee held telephone interview sessions with three candidates, arranged a “pre-candidating” weekend with each of these individuals, checked references, searched background information, and attended sermons given at “neutral pulpits”—pulpits other than our own. Each candidate visited our community, looked at our church and learned more about us—and we learned more about thm. By March, the Committee narrowed the selection down to one candidate to bring before the congregation for consideration.

At the same time, the Building Task Force worked with the architect to develop the design of the building. We now had a completed design package

that was ready for construction. Construction bids were submitted and we received a letter of commitment regarding the mortgage arrangements. Eventually, modifications to the design (below) were made as the project proceeded.

With our Vision so close to fulfillment, we took a hard look at our finances. At a congregational meeting on March 15, a motion was made to continue forward with both the minister and the building in the 2009–10 fiscal year. After much discussion, the motion passed in a very close vote. Despite the closeness of the vote, most of us continued to be excited about the possibility of achieving our Vision.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, July 17, 2012 Heartland District of the UUA Amy Taylor, President Board of Trustees DISTRICT - REGION, What??

Here are the abbreviated governance structures of the Unitarian Universalist Association, and what is happening in ours at the district level. We are a "bottom up democracy" with the power and accountably coming from our independent congregations/fellowships and member organizations that make up our UU Association (UUA).

This is why it is so important for our congregations to have delegates participate in the UUA General Assembly where the annual business (like election of the Moderator & President) of the association happens. The UUA is made up of 19 districts. You probably know we are the Heartland District. Our district is Kentucky, Indiana, part of Michigan and western Ohio. Our district is the eastern boundary of the MidAmerica Region having three districts, with Central MidWest in the middle and Prairie Star the western boundary. The UUA has four other regions, each containing four districts.

Just as each congregation has a governance Board, the same is true for each district. Regions have not had any governance structure. This may be changing. Starting in 2010, the District Boards of the MidAmerica Region began exploring the possibility of a regional structure.

In 2011, all three boards voted to create a Regional Board to replace the existing three Boards. There are a lot of reasons for this, which you will be hearing more about. Just as each district member congregation sends delegates to General Assembly, we send delegates to the District Assembly to conduct its business.

On April 12-13, 2013 the Heartland District Assembly will be in Muncie, Indiana. It will be very important to send delegates to this 2013 meeting. The MidAmerica Districts will be asking at their 2013 meetings for a vote to replace our District Boards with one Regional Board. When will you start hearing more details about this? After all three MidAmerica Boards and lead staff of the three districts meet in late August in Rock Island, Illinois to fine tune the proposal. In September, we will start sharing information for comment and feedback.

In 2013 there will be a vote. Please look for information in future newsletters and information packets sent to your office administrators and ministers and boards. The plan is to get information out in as many ways as possible so you can have input, make comments, and be informed before you come as delegates to the April 2013 Heartland District Assembly in Muncie, IN. Library news Thank you Katrina Phelps for donating 2 boxes of very contemporary books especially focused on parenting. In fact we have created a new section in the library dealing with parenting - of all children’s ages. These books cover most of the concerns that parents face. Katrina also shared a bookcase that was her grandmother’s to hold the books - what a great idea! All the books on the outside shelf of the rolling cart are ready to be checked out by putting your name and the book title in the white loose-leaf binder on the filing cabinet inside the library door.

The title of some of the books Katrina donated are: The Roller Coaster Years, The Over-Scheduled Child, Your Children Are Listening, New Baby Care and Deepak Chopra. The library's computer is about to fall into obsolescence. As you shop for a new computer for yourself in the months ahead, please consider donating your current computer to the library. We currently have the library collection in Access on this machine, but don't have any of the other Microsoft Suite programs on the machine (Word, Excel). We need a machine with at least XP operating system (ideally Microsoft 7). Viewing the monitor is like trying to read in a cave. Please keep us in mind.

Hospitality News Thanks to all who are contributing to our social hour after the Sunday services by making coffee and offering us refreshments! Servers on the following dates are:

♦ July 29 - Potluck - Membership Committee ♦ Aug. 5 - Jennifer Hundley Batts and Lawrence Finley ♦ Aug. 12 - Erika Brady and Nolan Porterfield ♦ Aug. 19 - Need Volunteers

We welcome everyone’s help with serving refreshments after church. Nothing to buy or bake! Sign up on the bulletin board. Contact Mary Ann Johnson for more info. The Hospitality Committee requests that at all potlucks individuals and families needing assistance go through the line first. This includes families with young children and all other individuals and families that need help carrying their plates, reaching the dishes on the table, etc. We urge everyone else to follow this request and we ask that you show your caring for others by helping those that may need such assistance. We'll all enjoy our shared meals better in this way!

Thank you!

~Mary Ann Johnson
