FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK BY REV. SCOTT HALL

Grace and Peace

The summer break is here. College students have finished their finals and soon will be home and working at summer jobs. Their eagerness to get home for the summer may be explained in part by their desire to be where they are known and loved. God is like home. God knows and calls us by name. God embraces us with a circle of people called the church. We may see the presence of God reflected for us in a mother, father, sister or brother, friends, or neighbor. The prophet Micah used the image of the shepherd with the flock to illustrate the presence of God. [He shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord. Micah 5:4] God comes as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep; their strengths, their weaknesses, their habits. The Good Shepherd calls the sheep by name and invites them to follow with the flock. The sheep will be safe because they have the security of a caring shepherd. Do you hear that Shepherd calling your name? Come, join, be a part of His great flock as we worship together each Sunday.

Confirmation 2017

On June 4, 2017 at the 10:30 service, three students will be confirmed at Memorial UMC: Juel Culver, Sawyer Mohan, and Arie VanZee.

Sawyer is the son of Glen and Paula Mohan. He attends Farmington Middle School and will enter 7th grade this fall. His hobbies include playing video games, camping, and riding his scooter. Sawyer’s older sister, Grace, was also confirmed at Memorial in 2016. During Confirmation, Sawyer enjoyed talking to Rev. Scott about God and coming together with the other confirmands. He also particularly liked learning about the Great Commission.

Arie is the son of Brad and Sarah VanZee. He attends Farmington Middle School and will enter 8th grade this fall. His hobbies include swimming, being outdoors, and four-wheeling. Arie is also an avid Cubs fan. He decided to attend Confirmation because the rest of his family was confirmed at Memorial. He found it interesting to learn where the Bible came from, and said about Confirmation, “Do it! It’s fun!”

Juel is the daughter of Mark Culver and Nicole Wood. She attends West County

Middle School and will enter 8th grade this fall. Her hobbies include singing,

swimming, and cooking. Her favorite thing about Confirmation was that she was

able to learn more about God and Christianity. When asked what she would like to

tell others about her experience in Confirmation, she encouraged others to try

Confirmation as well.

Hello Everyone!

My first month at Memorial has been an exciting one! I’ve been able to meet many of Memorial’s congrega-tion, roam around Farmington, and attend: youth group, choir practice, MUM’s Café, Monday Club, Quilting Club, band practice, Confirmation, even a trustee meeting, and much more. I’m settling in, and to Pam Brooks’ pleasure, 23 days into my time at Memorial, I even managed to decorate my office!

You may be wondering what’s next for me, and what plans and ideas I have for reaching families of our com-munity. This is why I would like to update you all on the hopes and dreams that I have for Memorial and ask for your help in accomplishing the following:

First, I need MUCH prayer support. God’s ear is turned our way, and I believe that if we unite in prayer as a church, that God will speak to us and empower us do mighty things.

Second, I would like to start a hospitality team, whose sole focus is to be welcoming and attentive to the

needs, wants, and desires of newcomers to the church. On June 26 at 6 p.m., we will have an informa-tional meeting in the conference room to discuss the vision and expectations for this team. If you are interested in learning more or helping increase the hospitality at Memorial, please attend this meeting! If you are interested, but unable to attend, please stop by my office, call, or email me for more infor-mation.

Third, this summer, I plan to go on Memorial’s youth trips, sing special music with the youth in our

church, go on a mission trip to Ukraine to be a part of hosting a young adult Christian camp (and give a presentation about it when I get back), make some updates to the fellowship hall, launch our hospi-tality team, and many other things. Then, this fall, I plan to begin a set of small groups.

Fourth, I have learned a lot of names and had some great conversations here at Memorial, but I am still

lacking depth of relationship and insight into all of your lives. I want to know- who would be interest-ed in being a small group leader, going on a mission trip, helping decorate the fellowship hall, or be-ing a part of the hospitality team? Where do you all live? What are your families like? What is your favorite place to eat in town? I want to know you all! Let’s go out to lunch, on a walk, or to a coffee house; show me your homes, your families, and your workplaces. Let’s share life.

CONVOY OF HOPE

Alice Johnson states, “I feel so blessed to be part of a church that is always willing to help when asked. Deliveries for Rural Compassion come in once a month from Springfield. I would like to thank all the volunteers that have stepped up to help. They unload the truck, sort and help load the vehicles from the various churches that participate, then help unload and carry the items upstairs at our church. Once decided where we could best serve the community, they help deliver. Thank you.”

What do you do with approximately 500 lbs. of loose corn flakes and corn flake crumbs? You ask Mark Kisser and the youth to repackage into smaller packages and distribute to help feed the hungry in our community. What a blessing they have been. Thank you.

If you attend the 10:30 worship service, you know what Children’s Church is. If you attend the 8 or 9:30 services, you may wonder what Children’s Church means.

Cindy Danieley has organized a group of volunteers who take the children out of the sanctuary following Moments with Young Disciples. They go to a classroom & enjoy a snack, a short bible lesson, and sometimes an activity. Think a mini VBS! This gives the children a worship experience on their level, and it gives the parents the opportunity to listen to the sermon without distraction from their children.

Children’s Church is not offered on the first Sunday of each month because of communion.

Currently, these ladies are leading Children’s Church: Cindy Danieley, Ruth

Ann Pope, Alison Sheets, Susan Hedgcorth, Laura Murray, Nancy Petersen,

and Sandy Miller. If you would like to lead a session about once a quarter, let

Cindy Danieley know. It’s fun to really get to know the children this way!

UMW RETREAT

AUGUST 5, 2017

SHELAH AMONG THE HILLS

See page 13 for details.

Fulfill the reality that the glory of God is the human fully alive.

"Reverend Vennard is fearlessly awake to the wild dance of life. Rather than sleeping through life, she awakens to it. Rather than escaping from reality, she embraces it. Rather than distracting herself with a life to come, she dares to live the life that is. And she wants you to do all this as well. Read this book. Live this book. Wake up." ―from the Foreword

In a culture enthralled with technology, striving and speed, people of many faith traditions and no faith tradition long to slow down, pay attention and wake up to the present moment. They want help in realizing their hope that they can become more truly alive.

This engaging and highly readable book offers you guidance for the journey. Sharing stories from her personal life as a spiritual seeker and from her professional career as a retreat leader, spiritual director and teacher, Reverend Jane Vennard illustrates the joys and frustrations of spiritual practice, offers insights from various religious traditions, and provides step-by-step exercises and meditations to practice:

Caring for the body • Rest • Silence Solitude • Letting go • Community • Hospitality • Service • Living gratefully.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

TOWER Volume 49, Issue 6

Page 13

Your Board of Trustees, as you have probably noticed, has been very active the past couple of years in the maintenance upkeep and improvement of Memorial Church. Some of the more obvious improvements have been a new pitched roof over the choir room, and a new covered drop-off area for the kitchen & basement entrance area on the east end of the church. The covered drop-off area was approved and constructed in the memory of Vincent P. Kinkead. This was his desire to build this drop off for the Methodist women. (They seem to have held a special place in his heart.) The

pitched roof over the choir room was done out of necessity due to water leaks and an aging structure.

A lot of the small repairs and improvements are hard to see; but it you will look around, there are new chairs in the

Commons Area & Conference Room, new computers for the office, and remodeling in the Parlor.

By the time you receive this newsletter, you will probably have noticed that the Trustees have purchased two new buses—one 15-passenger and one

25-passenger! We will keep the van and plan to sell the present bus.

With the continued youth activities of our church and our extremely active mission services, we felt we needed to get something comfortable and appropriate for these members. I feel we can look forward to more activities for the young couples with hiring Natalie Miller, and hopefully these buses

will help fulfill some of her needs for an active Young Adult program.

Things you can look forward to from the Trustees in the near future: *Improvements to some of our restrooms,

*Replacement of Plexiglas over the stained glass windows, & *Covered drop-off at the Karsch entrance to our church

(similar to the covered kitchen drop-off area).

As you read this report of the substantial work done by the Trustees, we should keep in mind and recognize how

blessed we are as a church to have been gifted so much by past members and estates! This is a very special church

family that not only takes care of their commitment to the stewardship of our church but looks to the future of the facility

and our congregation as well.
