YEAR ROUND STEWARDSHIP—YOUTH CONFIRMATION
May 16, 2018
How many of us in the church cringe when we hear the word ―stewardship‖? Do we think, ―Oh no! It’s that time again! The next few weeks are all about money and pledging.‖ The reality is, however, that ―stewardship‖ is occurring at St. David’s every day, every month, and goes far beyond our monetary gifts. This month we spotlight our Youth Con-firmation Ministry, led by Jill and Michael Sutton. For the past eight years the Suttons have taught the youth confirmation class at St. David’s, shepherding, supporting, and encouraging a group of 16-20 high school sopho-mores to, in Michael’s words, ―seek a relationship with Jesus.‖ Meeting weekly throughout the school year, the Suttons not only prepare these young people to be officially received into the Episcopal Church, but they also encourage their students to understand and deepen their personal faith, which means allowing and discussing the hard questions, such as ―Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?‖
Eight years, over 30 weekly classes per year, over 150 youth confirmed. Why do they do it? Both Jill and Michael agree, ―We learn as much as we teach.‖ Stewardship really is what we do with all that God has given us, all the time. Jill and Mi-chael Sutton and their leadership in Youth Confirmation offer us a shining example of year-round stewardship in action.
