MAZEL TALK AND THANK YOUS

The Shalom Squad (Greeters) for September consisted of Mikki Davidson, Mike Tucker, Stephanie Korenberg, and Shellie Halprin, and (Ushers) for September were Lari Davis, Bob Collen, Larry Schnitzer, and Greg Halprin.

Stuffing the September bulletin: Carole Collen, Paulette Fainsztein, Julie Kopit, and Lar i Davis.

Shanah tovah!

It is not often that we get to say that to one another in October, but the Hebrew calendar being what it is, here we are in a late High Holy Day season (late compared to the Gregorian calendar). While we can argue that the Jewish holidays are never early nor late, we can also

understand that with 13 months in the 5776 Hebrew calendar, it gives us a little extra time to prepare ourselves.

High Holy Day preparation involves different things for each of us. Some of us are writing sermons and practicing music; some of us are organizing logistics and “shlepping;” some of us are working hard so we can take a couple days off work without incident; many of us are cooking and getting a table ready. All of these preparations are important and add to the holiness of the holidays, but what is even more important is the preparation we do in our own hearts and minds.

There are things we can do to prepare for the Days of Awe, even if all we do during the holidays is show up and pray. Riffing on a similar list from Rabbi Emanuel Feldman’s article, “How to Succeed in Shul on the High Holy Days By Really Trying,” I offer these tips to prepare for a meaningful Yamim Nora’im:

Relax. Before you even get to services, take some deep breaths. Drive carefully and slowly, observing safety laws and enjoying the ride. If being late for services bothers you, leave with plenty of extra time to prevent allowing your Orange County commute to negatively impact your entry into 5777.

Smile. When you arrive, people will be around to guide you in our parking lot and in the extra spaces we have available. Treat them like friends (many of them will be), and wish them a “shanah tovah.” Beginning with kindness will go a long way toward starting the year off on the right foot.

Relax more. The more you let go of the stresses of the mundane, the easier it is to open up to the sacred.

Interact before services begin so you can focus once they do. See people you haven’t seen in a while and greet them warmly, getting everything you need to say out in the open, whether it is a simple, “Hello! I’ve missed you,” or a thoughtful apology.

Take it easy on yourself. It’s ok if you are faster or slower on a particular prayer than the people around you, or even if you are faster or slower than the service leaders. Go at your own pace. Enjoy the liturgy, the music, the atmosphere, and don’t critique yourself if your mood is something other than what you imagine to be what it needs to be during services.

Focus on the important stuff. We are all here to celebrate, renew, repent, and remember together. Take care of our souls, and the rest will fall into place.

Wishing you a very happy, healthy, and fulfilling 5777. Shanah tovah!

LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW YEAR !

Elul 28—Tishri 22 5776

October 2016

As you have hopefully noticed by now, having turned a page or two to get to this article, the front page of the Bulletin has been redesigned. Rabbi Young’s article has been moved inside the front cover so that key information about services and other events is the first thing you see when you pick up the Bulletin. It should be easy to find what you need to know. Having it on the front page accomplishes that goal. We hope you find this change useful, especially this month with so much happening. In many years, the Hebrew and Gregorian calendars align in such a way that Rosh Hashanah,

Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah and Shemini Atzeret are spread out across two months. This year, however, everything fits nicely into October. Check the front page for locations, dates and times of High Holy Day services and celebrations in the Sanctuary and under the sukkah, or see the High Holy Day packets that were mailed last month. Speaking of fitting nicely, the board has been talking for a while about having Rosh Hashanah first day services at CBT. Some of the advantages of doing so include not having to schlep everything we need to another location and, more importantly, being able to celebrate the new year in our own home. One of the key deciding factors has been whether or not we will all fit. Based on attendance in recent years, the seating capacity in the Sanctuary and Social Hall, and the purchase of new chairs earlier this year, it has been determined that we can fit comfortably, and the classrooms upstairs can be used for youth activities. This brings a whole new meaning to “staying home for the new year.” Finally, we also look forward this month to continuing to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. The Shabbat service on October 21 celebrates Social Action. Then, on Saturday, October 22, the 40th Anniversary Gala will be held at the Island Hotel Newport Beach. It promises to be a fun evening of reminiscing, entertainment, and delicious food. We are known for staying busy during the year. This month is no exception. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of this month’s events. Susan and I wish you a sweet year. Sam Backer

WE ’RE PRAYING FOR YOU We offer a Mi Shebeirach prayer for all who are ill at every Shabbat service. Call the synagogue office, 714-963-4611, to have a prayer offered for yourself, a member of your family, or a friend. Names will be placed on the list for a period of two months.

This is Your Page Share your simchas and sorrows with your friends at CBT. Let Rabbi Young or the office know about happy events to share in our Mazel Talk section. If you notify us about the death of a family member, we will publish the name in our In Sympathy section. We also want to know if you or a family member or friend is ill and should be included on the Mi Shebeirach list.

CANTORIAL CORNER

As we enter the month of October, I want to take the time to express my immense gratitude to the members of this year’s High Holy Day Vocal Ensemble. This year has seen the congregation’s choral group expand and grow, with many beautiful and intricate new songs. Members of our vocal group spent over ten weeks rehearsing, bringing their beautiful voices to S’lichot, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. I would like to thank all of those who have participated in and helped create this year’s rich sound: Mira Adler, Sam Backer, Bob Collen, Gerald Fleischmann, Phil Fleischmann, Eve Gumpel, Sheri Lyn Hamrell, Steve Hamrell, Janine

Lehrer, Alan Levin, Sean Sagan, Jay Seiden, Susan Slonim, and Mimi Spencer. A special thank you is also due to the incredible Katheryn Klein, whose musical expertise and stunning interpretations of our liturgical music add immeasurable depth and soul to every prayer. I am truly honored to celebrate our High Holy Day liturgy in song with such a passionate group of vocalists and musicians. B’Shirah, Jenna Sagan

With the approach of Yom Kippur on Oct. 11, we have the opportunity to make amends and apologize to Mike Haber for not identifying him as the designer, parts manufacturer and construction chair of the CBT Sukkah on the temple patio.

Volunteers are sought for erection of the Sukkah about 9 A.M. on Oct. 9. Workers may want to bring gloves to handle the sharp plant materials used as a roof. Ladders also will be needed.

Yes, it is the Sunday before Yom Kippur and Sukkot does not start until the evening of Oct. 16, but Pam Rosen's religious school students plan to decorate the Sukkah that day

Sisterhood has announced plans for Sushi and Sake in the Sukkah at 6:30 P.M. on Oct. 17 with Rabbi Young presiding. There is a charge for the dinner. Contact Shellie Halprin for information.

Brotherhood will offer Bagels Under the Sukkah with Rabbi Young at 10 A.M. on Oct. 23. It is open to all congregants and admission is free.

Thank you to Arnold Adler, Gary Miller, Mike Kibel and Jay Spencer, who served as bartenders for the pre-Oneg at our 40th anniversary celebration service on Sept. 2 and to Bernie Kessler and Harris Stutman, who helped schlep the wine.

Mike Kibel reports Brotherhood has been asked to also provide bartenders to serve wine from 7;00 P.M. to 7:25 P.M. for each pre-Oneg on Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 23. The job includes all you can drink, Mike added.

Religious Practices Chair Al Davidson, who rounded up ushers for the Rosh Hashanah services at CBT on Oct. 2, 3 and, 4, said he's seeking ushers for Yom Kippur

services on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12.

Those services will be held at the Church of Latter Day Saints, 17th Street and Delaware Street, south of Garfield Avenue, in Huntington Beach. Brotherhood will hand out water and apples after the Oct. 4 service to help congregants break the fast.

Although like Jack Benny, Brotherhood is only 39, we plan to help Congregation B'nai Tzedek celebrate its 40th anniversary in any way we can in the coming months as well as offer some programs of our own, now being planned. Shalom, Arnold Adler Publicity Chair

Ladies of CBT,

L'shana Tova! I wish I could be telling you how fantastic our Paid-Up membership luncheon was on September 18, but as of press time, it hasn't happened yet! The preparations have been made and we are expecting a good-sized group. I will report about it next month and include photos. We greatly appreciate all of the support you provide to Sisterhood to keep us strong!

Did you get to attend the special 40th Anniversary Shabbat service? Perhaps you may have noticed the bar-height tables on the patio for the proneg (pre-Oneg). Those eight tables were donated by Sisterhood to CBT and will be used for many functions throughout the year.

UPCOMING: Please check out the flyer in this month's Bulletin for our next event, SUSHI IN THE SUKKAH, on Monday, October 17 from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.. The cost is $18 per person and you are welcome to bring a friend, or even your husband! We will be serving sushi, salad, edamame and sake and Rabbi Young will be our guest speaker to teach us everything we wanted to know about the history of the sukkah and the rituals surrounding it. RSVP and advanced payment are required. [Note: We will also provide teriyaki chicken and rice for those who don't eat sushi, if you let us know when you RSVP.]

Many blessings to you and your family in this festive season.

40th Anniversary Update Last night (at the time of this writing) was another dream come true for so many of us. Debbie and I have been the recipients of a tremendous number of praises, and though we are ever so grateful, we cannot accept this alone. Without the tremendous amount of assistance from our 40th Anniversary Committee members, Clergy, Staff, and Congregants, the specialness of this Shabbat would not have been felt by over 200 attendees in the sanctuary and social hall. The Five Rabbis of CBT were delighted to celebrate this occasion with us and brought their love, wisdom, and enthusiasm to us. The Prayer Service Booklet, which was created by Rabbi Young and Barbara Stein was used for this most inspirational service. Rabbi Young set the spiritual tone of the evening with his opening remarks and the first Responsive Reading…this is…the roots into the past and the arms stretched forward into the future. Our Cantorial Soloist, Jenna Sagan, showed the skills of someone with ten times the years of her experience. With Jenna’s voice and those of Cantor Lizzie Weiss, Cantor Jessica Hutchings, and Rabbi Rebecca Einstein Schorr, the music was awe inspiring.

Cindy Hirsch and her crew of devotees, Marcia Kass, Sue Gelerter, Susan Kibel, and Heather Miller, plus all of the bakers prepared a healthy, tasty, and lovely presentation for our pre-Oneg and scrumptious Oneg. Once again Lari Davis and Al Davidson have made the written word not only available for us but extremely pleasing to the eye. Our Brotherhood members Gary Miller, Jay Spencer, Arnold Adler, Bernie Kessler and Harris Stutman, headed by Mike Kibel, kept the vino flowing. Holly Gordon, the greeter in the lobby and the Hostess Susan Kibel on the patio, made all arrivals feel welcome. Of course without the help of Sam Backer, Mike Tucker, Larry Serota, Bob Collen and Greg Halprin, the evening would have not run smoothly.

I know that I have mentioned a lot of names; let me know if I missed anyone, but so many of our Congregants have shown their love of CBT with their skills, time and money. We have reservations for over 200 people who will be joining us on October 22, 2016, to dine and party at the GALA in Newport Beach, at the Island Hotel. The final date to RSVP for this has passed. If you have procrastinated or plans have changed and you would like to attend, let me know as you read this, and I will see if we have had any cancellations. The night before we celebrate at the GALA, October 21, 2016, we will once again gather in our sanctuary for the “Social” Action Shabbat of the 40th Anniversary and there will be a pre-Oneg with wine on the patio at 7:00 P.M. Our Founding Rabbi Stephen J. Einstein will join Rabbi David N. Young in another inspiring service.

As we are presently observing our High Holy Days together, let us be mindful of the importance to embrace all of the CBT Community. L’Shanah Tovah.

Rose Lesser and Debbie Biebelberg

INTERESTING ADULT EDUCATION—INTERESTED?

Torah Study: Every Saturday morning from 9:15 A.M. to 10:15 A.M. Join us for a line-by-line study of the Torah. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to learn and engage our Torah! This is a lively and entertaining discussion to which everyone is invited.

Adult Classes: Every Tuesday evening from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. 1. For the first hour, enjoy a variety of teachers discussing topics of interest, from health care to obscure Jewish texts to punk rock.

See the CBT website for the current schedule. 2. For the second hour, Rabbi Young takes us on a tour of the Talmud. Don't know what the Talmud is? Come and see for yourself!

No prior experience or course work necessary as we read 2,000-year-old teachings of venerated rabbis and apply them to our lives today.

SPONSORING AN ONEG JUST GOT EASIER !

Have you wanted to sponsor an Oneg, but were not sure what to do or how much it would cost? It’s easy! You can be a sponsor for $270. This represents the actual cost of the Oneg. This covers food, setup, and cleanup, and your name will be listed as the Oneg sponsor in the Shabbat announcement. CBT will handle all of the details. All you have to do is show up and enjoy! Furthermore, because you pay CBT, the $270 is tax deductible. It’s a win-win! You can also honor the memory of loved ones or celebrate simchas by making contributions to the Oneg Fund. This will help ensure funds are available to cover costs in the event an Oneg is unsponsored. See? It is easy. It all starts with a call to Yesi in the office to let her know when you want to sponsor. Why not call 714-963-4611 or email ([email protected]) today?

IMPORTANT NOTICE ON FLYERS , FACEBOOK , AND THE CBT WEBSITE

Flyers or material that will be printed or distributed are to be emailed to Gerry Kaskel, [email protected], Amy Kaskel, [email protected], and Sam Backer, [email protected], for approval BEFORE being emailed to Yesi, [email protected], for distribution.

Anything to be placed on the official CBT Facebook Group goes through Jay Howard, [email protected]. Posting on the CBT Membership Group Message Board is open to all members.

Anything to be placed on the CBT website goes through Adam Lang, [email protected].

The Sisterhood Judaica Shop will be open every Sunday from 9:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. and by appointment.
