Amelia Earhart: A Flash From the Past

Amelia Mary Earhart became interested in flying when she saw her first stunt-flying exhibition. Within 6 months of taking her first flying lesson, she managed to save enough money to buy her own plane. She named her plane “Canary”, and used it to set her first women’s record by rising to an altitude of 14,000 feet.

One afternoon in April 1928,

while at work as a nurse’s aide (in WWI) she received a phone call asking her if she would like to be the first woman to “fly the Atlantic”, to which Earhart promptly replied, “Yes!”.

One of the men behind the pro-ject was named George Putnam, and he and Amelia became good friends, and were married on

February 7, 1931. To retain her independence, Amelia referred to the marriage as a “partnership” with “dual control”. Together, they worked on special plans for Earhart to become the first woman (and the second person) to solo the Atlantic-which she accomplished!

CTC. Some of the students that went were Katie, Delcie, Patric, Vivian, Tommy, Christine, Elia, Shawna, Shar’ron, Ashley, Peter, Kaytlyn, Ian, and Erica. All the students thought the activity was a really good chance to bond

On February 12th, some of the students of the CTC at-tended the evening activity, which included a trip to the Strand Theater in Paw Paw to see the hit comedy, “Parental Guid-ance”, and then pizza back at the

without all the drama that some-times happens at school. Every-one thought the movie was very funny. Vivian, Kate, and Delcie had the most fun because they were actually quoting the movie. (And, who is this Carl? You’ll just have to see the movie!)

On February 28th, a number of CTC students will be diving in at the Alle-gan Aquatic Center. After traveling to Allegan from the CTC, we will swim for two hours in the beautiful pools, with features such as a whirlpool, a slide, and water basketball. After we are done swimming, we will leave and grab a bite to eat. Do you want to find out more about this activity? Well, have no fear, ladies and gentlemen, because Kate Barnum and Howard Adams will give you the scoop.

Finally, the day arrived! We took transit to Allegan, and we were not disappointed! The building was big, with lockers for our belongings. The smaller pool had the whirlpool, the slide, and two basketballs. The larger one had some diving boards, but we we could only swim as far the the first board. After we were done swimming, we all went to Wendy’s for dinner, which was lots of fun. We all think it’s an activity worth doing again….

Who IS That Woman?

Do You Know...That March is Women’s History Month? By Vivian Goldenbeld

The CTC has been in full swing in preparation for the Chili Cook-Off and Line Dancing Competition to be held on March 1, 2013 at the Conference Center. During one of our recent rehearsals, an unidentified woman joined the class. We aren’t really sure who she was, but did she ever like to dance! Unfortunately, the competition is only open to students, so we must suggest to our anony-mous dancer that she remain a member of the audience, even though we loved her smooth moves on the dance floor!

What started out as a one day celebration has turned into a month-long tradition of honoring the women who have helped make history. The first International Women’s Day was held in March of 1911. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the first week of March as National Women’s History Week. Here is part of the speech that President Carter made to the nation: From the first settlers who came to our shores,

from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often, the women were unsung heroes, and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.

-President Jimmy Carter

In 1987, Congress passed a proclamation that declared March as National Women’s History Month to celebrate the accomplishments of ALL women. Make sure to take the time to learn about a famous woman, or tell a woman that you care about how “famous” she is to you!

Sheesh. This is harder than I

thought!

A loving heart is the truest wisdom. -Charles Dickens

Let the pool party begin!

Let’s Make a Splash! Submitted by Kate Barnum and Howard Adams

Directions: Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat; stir in onion and leek. Cover and cook 20 minutes. Stir in potatoes; cover and cook 15 minutes. Stir in broth, salt, and pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Remove from heat, and cool slightly. Process soup in batches in a blender until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides; return to saucepan, and cook over medium heat until thoroughly heated. Serve with desired toppings.

Enjoy this delicious soup on a cold, winter day!
