February 2020 President’s Message

I would like to thank Lillian Glaeser and Lorna Straka for filling in for me at my first guild meeting in January. A thank you to all for understanding that sometimes family situations need to take priority over other things in life.Congratulations to Community Service and the guild for gifting 300 quilts and 200

pillowcases to local agencies in 2019. Our guild is amazing! Guild Challenge “Sign of the Times” will be revealed in March. Please plan on bringing your quilts to the March Mixer. We still have openings for Education Outreach, Holiday Program, and Jamboree. Please think about volunteering for these wonderful committees. Any questions, please give me a call. My number is in the roster.

GUEST SPEAKERS AT GUILD MEETINGS There was extensive discussion at the last Guild Board meeting about whether to change the agenda of our guild meeting to have the speaker at the beginning of the meeting so that more members can be there for the presentation. The general consensus is to vary the order of the agenda by occasionally having the speaker before the break. This will be decided by the Program Chair and the President. Notification will go out to members prior to guild meetings if there is a change to the agenda.Thank you for your understanding and support.

Barbara Ceresa, President

Community Service is a great place to learn about squaring up quilted quilts , choosing colors, and cutting batting and backing for our donated quilt tops. There is always something to do including sewing labels on quilt backs, making up kits, organizing donated fabric, squaring up quilted tops, finding/matching up binding, and in general just a nice lace to be to share information, getting to know others in the guild, and camaraderie. The new year starts and we focus our efforts on those agencies whose requests we could not fill last year. We are always in need of twin size quilts (60–62 in by 72–80 in) or so. Does not have to be exact. Twin size quilts are given to Hospitality House, Adult Protective Services, Hetty’s Haven, and either Crystal Ridge or Golden Empire Nursing/Rehab facilities receive lap size quilts for wheelchair residents. We also donate quilts to Living Well Medical Clinic, CASA, Child Advocates, and quilts withOUT batting to Child Protective Services. We attempt to also get quilts to people who have lost their homes due to a fire.Currently there is fabric all ready cut to make pillowcase kits. Pillow cases will be needed later this month for distribution. We have an excess of fabric due to several large donations in 2019. If you are working on a quilt to donate to Community Service, and need extra fabric, it is available.Plan to stay all day or just for an hour to suit your schedule. Plan to have an enjoyable and relaxing time with us. Bring your lunch if you plan to stay all day.Layer your clothing as our room is usually cool in the winter time.We meet at the back of the Nevada County Historical Society Building, next to Sierra Presbyterian Church at the wonky corner of Ridge Road and Nevada City Highway the third Thursday of each month from 9 AM to 3 PM.Nancy Holtz

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOME WORKSHOP

Hello fellow quilters, we look forward to seeing you in Home Workshop. This is a time to learn something new, spend a jolly time with friends, and lend a helping hand to the new quilters who will be meeting with us.Each month we have a presenter who has volunteered to teach a skill or a project, everything from vests to pin cushions to quilts. The topics are limited only by YOUR imagination and desire expressed to Bev and Theresa. We meet at the LDS church on Hollow Way in Nevada City from 9 to 3. We sew, talk, and laugh through out the day. At noon we eat, talk, and laugh, and then return to our projects.People come and go as they must or bring their own projects and join the camaraderie. The only important thing is that you come and have fun.The day is free. Each class has a materials list which we will send via e-mail. You provide the machine and your favorite tools, as well as your lunch and drinks, but please do not bring coffee or tea. We provide irons and boards, cutting mats, a few rulers and rotary cutters, and extension cords. In January, Bev Sarchett taught a spinning star table runner, while Joan Mosely introduced Quilting 101. In February, Ginny Lee is presenting her class

on totes made with mesh. Look for the sign ups at the February meeting and join in the fun. In March we will make a roll-up customizable tool pouch for carrying small sewing gadgets to class. We have t-shirt quilts and finishing quilts coming up as well.Bev and Theresa look forward to seeing you soon at Home Workshop.

Jeanie Ferguson, Patchwork Star Reporter

Stephanie Bennett-Strause Patchwork Star for February 2020 “I'm not moody, disorganized, or self-absorbed; I'm an artist.”

Reeking of drama, spirituality and exotica, Stephanie's home is “dripping” in fabric! It is jaw-dropping! Everywhere you look, the lost and forgotten, the indigenous and the otherworldly, come alive and boldly manifest themselves in Stephanie's quilts and carefully collected artifacts. She quickly states: “I am not a rule-follower. I use symbolism wantonly.”Her quilts are mostly big. “They tell me when they are finished.” She is an artist du jour. When us ordinary folk need to make a Hawaiian quilt, we consult Elizabeth Root or some other expert on that genre. Not Stephanie. Fantastical motifs, complicated and integrated with spooky Halloween themes, jump out at you. Cultures and ethnicities you never heard of also jump out at you. While inspecting her unique statuary (actually gleaned from thrift stores) one would swear Stephanie's and Jay's (her husband) travels were extensive, surely including Fukushima, Borneo and the Maldives. But, not so. Her interests , her furniture and her fabric choices and her quilts

represent limitless cultural passions.

Too, books abound in every niche, every hallway, every shelf. And oh, the sweetest thing! She and Jay read to each other every night on the “evening couch”. (The “morning couch” faces their sublime and private view of trees and birds in the backyard.) I did find travel guides for European cities and even an Isabel Allende I've somehow missed.

Stephanie's top floor studio is not cluttered. It is beyond full, but neatly stuffed, labeled and uncomplicated. I estimate 5000 fat quarters positioned correctly in their see-through bins, stacked quilts wishing for a bare wall, Mountain Art Quilters’ challenges hanging on a rack, a unique scissor display, plenty of handy thread racks. Everything has its place. But, my unaccustomed eyes could not rest. I wanted to stay longer and absorb her fantastical dream world. Stephanie quotes: “Inventing quilts is the most forgiving art there is. Quilting is my vacation. I can tell you about every fabric I have chosen and why.” (can we do that?)

Stepping back, Stephanie admitted to a less than stellar, hardscrabble upbringing. She always knew she wanted to be an artist. But, in her heart she also knew this path would not support her and elevate her from poverty. So to read, learn, study stay in school—that was her goal. Fast forward to today. Dr. Stephanie Bennett-Strause is a Behavioral and Development General Pediatrician, thereby combining counseling with medicine. She and Jay have only been in Nevada County for one year. Stephanie may seek employment here in the near future and step into a fast-paced routine. But, for now she is eager to share her quilting expertise and gain new friendships. She has been quilting for decades. Her preferences are decidedly out of the box. She has moxie and an extraordinary depth of concept, limitless and uninhibited.

Among her many notable quotes, she states: “Success is more about progress than perfection.” I was particularly impressed with her life journey, her determination, her goals. Needless to say, Stephanie is “quilting outside the bee”. You will hear about her ventures with notables Roberta Horton and Laura Lee Fritz. You will delight in seeing
