FROM THE DESK OF THE POTENTATE

by Illustrious Potentate Douglas Phinney

Illustrious Potentate Douglas Phinney

Well, 2018 is coming to a close as your Potentate. What a ride. It goes by so fast, the support and interest in events

has been overwhelming. ‘KORA ROCKS’. There is no way I can list all the individuals who helped make this year a wonderful experience for Lynn & I. You know who you are and I know everyone in some large or small way can attributed to this year. THANK YOU ALL!!!!

A few highlights…being a Clown at the Circus' in Lewiston & Augusta, which were a huge success this year. Through the Circus Committee, all the volunteers and ticket sellers, it took a Temple wide effort in order to revive this long standing fundraiser for Kora. Imperial Session in Daytona “Back to the Beach” will always be remembered as one of our own, ILL. Sir Paul “DOC” Poulin was elected as Imperial Trustee giving the Northeast a voice for our hospitals. Randy Rudge, Anah Temple was elected as Imperial Recorder again giving a voice at the Highest Level of Shrine. They will both serve us well. The Northeast in Rutland, Vermont was exceptionally well attended and the units brought home eight awards in all. The Summer Ceremonial in Topsham where we initiated and held second section on 30 nobles, enjoyed a brew tour, socializing, entertainment and fun. My potentate trip to Mazaltan, Mexico was certainly a huge highlight, with so much fun, not enough time with a fantastic group. Friends Forever.

We have a few major events left on the Calendar.Chamber of Commerce Night at Kora – November 15th, Turkey

Smoker – November 16th, FEZtival of Trees – November 17-24. All hands on deck for another exceptional holiday event.

Stated Meeting on November 27th. Election of the 2019 Officers and Annual Christmas Party

Dec. 1st (Elvis will be in the Building). Dec. 8th Breakfast with Santa in the morning and Second

Section Xmas Party at night. The past few months have been very busy. We held the

First Widows Luncheon at Kora with two dozen widows from the Widow Club with President, Eileen Fales. Debbie McKinley made her famous Chicken Pot Pie and ILL. Sir Rick Olfene gave a presentation/update on the Foundation.

The Ladies appreciated the gathering and hope it can continue. It was great to see old friends and make new acquaintances. Past 1st Lady Kathy Swett brought some photo albums and Kora memorabilia to help reminisce some of the past events. What a great group. Thank you ladies for your energy and supporting Kora.

This years Rangeley Potentate’s Reception was very memorable with many Units attending the parade and enjoy hospitality with the York County group afterwards. The Fryburg Fair’s Parade this year had a new Kora Entry. Mid Coast Shrine Club always featured a train which has now been revitalize by the Hillbillies who participated with it this year. It was well received by the Club and parade watchers. What a way of taking a well established Parade favorite and pass it along to another group to continue its appearances.

Northeast Shrine Association in Rutland, Vermont was another very well attended event with many units making the journey to parade and compete…and compete they did. Kora Karts and Log Rollers captured one award each. The clowns sent two clowns to the Clown Competition with each of them landing awards. The Cycle Corp was the BIG WINNER with four trophies. A truly great effort with time and energy to get to Vermont and represent our Temple so well. The BBQ Friday was a great hit. What a turn out and the food from a Local business that Steve Boucouvalas arranged was incredible.

Ladies Appreciation Night, chaired by Ken and Jean Gotreau was a wonderful event with dinner, dancing, flowers and glasses presented to the Ladies. We truly appreciate our Ladies and always put on a great event to honor and thank them for all their support. The Divan served wine at the tables which was well received with smiles and Thank You’s. Again, Thank you to those who attended and to Ken & Jean for such a great event.

Once a year we have a Joint Shrine Club meeting with Waldo County/Anah Divan and Mid Coast Shrine Club/Kora Divan in Lincolnville. This year was no different. It was always a special evening to share with our Counterparts to the North. A good time was had by all.

I want to thank everyone for Electing me and giving me the opportunity to serve as your Potentate in 2018. It has been an unforgettable experience and I am humbled by your confidence in honoring me with this position. I would like to thank the Divan, Trustees, Cabrari and most of all the Nobility and their Ladies for their support and hard work over the past year. I’d like to give a shout out to Emeritus Units Colonel Tony Perkins and his Lady Bonnie for all their assistance with the Calendar. Wishing him a quick recovery after knee surgery. Thank you for your long time friendship and dedication to Kora Shrine.

Finally, Lynn and I would like to wish your new Leadership team for 2019 a very successful and POSITIVE year moving forward. Our best wishes also go out to all the Units and Clubs next year as they are the backbone of our Fraternity. My Heartfelt thanks to all. We will see you in 2019.

END OF THE ROAD!When I have come to the end of the road, I should like to look

back and see that I have done my very best with the trust that’s placed in me.

I should like to know that I never have by action, word, or deed betrayed a given confidence, or forsaken a friend in need.

I should like the consolation, when I’ve traveled the very last mile, to know I’ve meant something to someone and caused those in sorrow to smile.

I know that I shall be happy if in the heart of just one, I can leave one lingering memory, of something good I have done.

At this point in the year I can report that Kora events have been very successful. The circus ended with a net of approximately $87,000. The football made a profit whereby $5000 was donated to each hospital along with a sizable donation to the transportation fund which was very much appreciated. The Feztival of Trees is next and it looks like it will be another successful event as the committee has been hard at work planning for another great year. We still have 110 nobles that have not paid 2018 dues at this writing and are subject to suspension at the end of the year. If you do not have a current dues card please remit your dues so you do not get suspended.

I know that there are issues within the temple that many would like to know what is going on. As much as I would like to answer your questions I cannot do so at this time but hopefully everything will be determined in the very near future and you will be made aware of the results.

I would also like to make it known that I am willing to continue serving as recorder for another year if it is the will of the nobility. It is your decision to make.

KORA SANDS FALL 2018

As this issue goes to press, Ryan Sherman and I, together with our Ladies Renee and Michelle, have just returned from the Imperial Membership Seminar in Tampa. We had the opportunity to hear what our Imperial leadership feels is important for membership. Imperial Potentate Jim Cain made it abundantly clear that Membership is a priority for him. We also had the opportunity to network with other Nobles from across the country, and hear what is working for them. We brought back some great information and ideas and are eager to put them to use.

Our current numbers show that our hard work is paying off. We still have a ways to go, but they are definitely moving in the right direction. Our NPD’s continue to decline, and we are on pace to end the year with the lowest net loss that we have had in several years. I have no doubt that programs like the Cold Sands have contributed to this. Since last year, this program has been adopted by many temples, and Imperial is fully behind it. We plan to continue to implement it, whenever feasible, as an option to allow a new Noble to join and become active immediately rather than waiting several months for a Ceremonial.

One of the resounding messages put forth centers around collaboration. Imperial Potentate Jim Cain’s motto for the year is “Together We Can.” At an historic meeting just prior to the seminar, Shriner’s leadership, the leadership of Scottish Rite, York Rite, and many Grand Masters met to discuss how ALL of the Masonic bodies can work together to increase membership.

In addition, “Together We Can” also applies to each of us. Currently we have over 1,800 nobles in Kora Shrine. It can be said that we have 1,800 members on our membership committee. All nobles and their ladies are invited to attend a membership meeting, and share new ideas for activities and events. We are working on a few, but can always use more. We all can play a part in helping meet our membership goals. When you are finished reading your copy of the Sands, pass it along to someone who might enjoy it. Everyone can help spread the word about Shriners and our good works. Do you know of a Noble who hasn’t been active lately? Reach out to them and invite them to join you at a Shrine function. Sometimes all it takes is a slight nudge to get someone fired up again.

Do you know someone who would make a good Mason or Shriner? It’s easy to send in a referral by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help get things moving and make these men Mason’s and Nobles. If you prefer, drop us a line at [email protected] and we will take it from there.

stocks and bonds, real estate, collectables, and life insurance proceeds.  Multi-year pledge-giving is also an option for donors. Please consider the Foundation in your estate planning. Example: pledge-give $1,000/year for the next 5 years, payable in lump-sum or installments. Representatives of the Foundation are anxious to meet with Nobles, and/or their families, to discuss these and other giving-options. Contact Rick Olfene or Barry Gates for more information.

BOSTON PATIENT WRITES COOKBOOK TO HELP OTHER PATIENTS

Shriners Hospitals for Children prides itself on family-centered care. Along with our staff working to meet patients’ and families’ needs, sometimes it is other patients who are supporting one another. Boston patient Evan recently worked with clinical dietitian Jenny Hall, MS, RD, LDN, to pen a blenderized diet cookbook. Evan was born with

a cleft lip and palate. Following an alveolar cleft repair, Evan was on a blenderized diet for more than six weeks, meaning he could not eat anything that had to be chewed. Evan not only included his favorite recipes in the cookbook, he also offers grocery shopping tips and other tools he found helpful during what can be a difficult time in treatment.

“This is a great tool for cleft lip and palate patients, as well as other patients who need to be on a liquid diet or require supplemental shakes to support their recovery,” said Jenny Hall, MS, RD, LDN, clinical dietitian at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. “It is always rewarding to help someone through their treatment and then have that patient return with ideas to help other patients with similar conditions. We’re very grateful to Evan for this tool that will surely benefit future patients.”

With the help of Evan’s cookbook, following doctors’ orders can be delicious and nutritious!

TELEHEALTH COMES TO SHC — BOSTONTelehealth has arrived at

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston! Our radiology manager Nicole Syring is taking the role of project lead and will mange the rollout of this new program. The state-of-the-art equipment, Avizia 750, will be housed in the old EOS room. The room is being renovated to accommodate telehealth visits.

The new technology will help us provide care to our patients closer to their homes, reducing the amount of travel they have to endure. Telehealth will support the system's overarching strategic goal of seeing more kids in more places! It will help us grow our international and domestic referrals while delivering an exceptional patient and family experience. The initiative is in line with our strategic goal to support education and training that will ensure quality improvements in care.

Further, Telehealth will assist in the growth and development of international partnerships and affiliations. Telehealth is currently available in 19 of our 22 hospitals. Shriners Hospitals for Children’s goal is to become the largest pediatric telehealth program in the world.

HAVING A BALLPatients Evan and Sam

recently had amazing experiences at Fenway Park. Evan was invited by Tickets.com, a longtime supporter of SHC and its patients, to attend batting practice, bring out the game ball and sit in some pretty awesome seats with his family. The Red Sox heard it was his special day and wished him "Happy Birthday!" on the Jumbotron.

Sam was invited to a game by Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Cora met Sam during his visit to SHC — Boston earlier this year. He was really impressed by Sam's batting skills.

Sam and his family went into the locker room and met the players. Sam even got a VIP tour of the field and a Red Sox jersey with his name on it. From the look of it, Sam gave Cora a few pointers on his lineup before the game.

Way to go, Sam!

SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS

Jean Maginnis (Development) and Eileen Skinner (Administrator) attended the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Football Classic on Saturday, July 21st. The game is in its 29th year (Wow!) and was just recognized at Imperial Session as the fourth top rated fundraiser for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Top football players from every high school in Maine compete on East-West Teams. The East won 40-14; there was lots of enthusiasm on both sides, and it was a beautiful day. But our real joy was being there with four SHC patients and their families; they shared their stories with us about care at various SHC hospitals while we waited for the coin toss. The young football players were obviously touched and gave all these young patients a lot of high fives. The Lobster Bowl is sponsored by Kora (game) and Anah (dinner) Temples in Maine. We had the fun opportunity to hang out with all these generous Shriners and their Ladies in and around the game!

Jean Maginnis, Eileen Skinner and Dr. Paul Poulin join SHC — Springfield patient Elizabeth and her mom Linda at the Maine Shrine

Lobster Bowl. Dr Poulin is newly elected to the SHC Board of Trustees. He is a member of Kora Temple and

Emeritus Member of Boston Board of Governors.

BOSTON HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS

NOAH’S STORYThere was no doubt in our minds that we would be going to

the Springfield Shriners Hospital when I found out at my 20-week ultrasound that our son Noah had a right clubfoot. Noah had his very first appointment at the hospital when he was ten days old. We went through the normal clubfoot steps of treatment, meaning 12 weeks of casts, boot and bars, more casts and more boot and bars, none of which corrected Noah’s foot. He was then placed into an Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFO) for a few years to maintain and hold the position of the foot to prevent a recurrence of the clubfoot.

Throughout this process, nothing stopped Noah from learning how to crawl and walk on schedule. He rode a bike, ran around with his friends and played any sport he wanted to sign up to play.

After about 6 years of trying different ways to accommodate Noah’s active lifestyle and support his foot and ankle, the doctors at Shriners Hospital brought up the topic of amputation. At first, we were shocked and saddened to hear the news that there was not anything else we could do to save his foot. Up until this point in time, we had no surgeries and we were very scared at the thought. Over the span of 3 years, we went to many amputation clinics, did lots of research and even got a second opinion, but it

all led us back to Shriners Hospital in Springfield. Amputation is a major decision, and it was ultimately the very best decision for Noah’s quality of life. All of the issues with his foot and leg length discrepancy were solved with one surgery.

On June 16, 2015 Noah had his Symes amputation. He took the summer to recuperate and in the fall, he started 4th grade on time with a prosthetic leg. Ever since his surgery, he has continued to play soccer, b a s k e t b a l l , baseball, football and swim. He may not do things exactly like his friends, but we always figure out a way for him to do anything he sets his mind to.

In our small town of Northfield, Massachusetts, Noah is the only child with a prosthetic, so it is nice to see other kids not be afraid to ask him questions.

I would like to thank the entire staff of Shriners Hospital for their endless compassion and love for all of their patients. Each and every one of you make coming to the hospital as a patient and parent effortless. Noah is now 12 years of age, just entered the 7th grade, and is thriving.

Aluminum Tab Collection & Recycling Project to Benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children®

How many individual tabs are there in one pound? About 1640 (coffee can)

In the past 28 years, over 1 billion individual tabs have been collected, which is approximately 750,000 lbs.

Current price for recycling can tabs is 55-70 cents per lb. Why only tabs?

Can tabs are made of pure aluminum and cans are not.

The money raised is used to purchase items for patient care.

The Can Tab program is administered by a lady’s Shrine group called the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America (LOSNA).

For more information, contact LOSNA at: (413) 579-1824 or (413) 301-8405 or email: [email protected]

For the past 27 years, the tab project has funded the purchase of many medical and non-medical items for the patients at several of our Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The Can Tab program is administered by the ladies Shrine group called the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America (LOSNA). Helma Court #64, the local chapter of LOSNA oversees the recycling of the tabs. Many people and organizations from around the country mail or bring tabs to our hospital in Springfield. The Helma Court #64 group then puts the tabs into barrels and brings them to a local recycling company where they are weighed by the pound. (A pound equals 1,640 tabs) The recycling company issues a check to Helma Court #64 based on the weight of the tabs times the value of aluminum on that particular day.

Once the tabs are recycled, a representative from Helma Court #64 contacts the hospital’s Administrator to find out what items are needed for direct patient care. Shriners Hospitals for Children and the members of Helma Court #64 appreciate the efforts of every individual, school, scouting troop and organization that collects tabs on behalf of Shriners Hospitals. Thank you in advance for your interest in the can tab program and if you need more information, contact a member from LOSNA Helma Court #64 at: (413) 531-7079 or (413) 301-8405 or email: [email protected].

Nobles of Kora Shriners,

As allowed by Imperial Shrine, I am issuing this letter and summary of my fraternal and professional experience to announce my intent to run as Recorder of Kora Shrine at the Annual Election on December 1, 2018.

I am a forty-five year member of Saco Lodge #9, where I served as Master in 1979, and Worthy Patron of Annette Chapter OES in 1975. I am also a member of Portland Valley Scottish Rite since 1972. I joined Kora in 1986 and immediately became active with the Band, serving as President and other positions, and currently as Director and Conductor. I presently serve as a Trustee for the Kora Building Association, and on the Board of Directors for the Kora Foundation.

I was appointed to the Kora Divan in 2007 by Ill. Tom Nason, and served as Potentate in 2011. During 2011, as a team, we built upon the foundation of creating a Mission and Vision for Kora Shrine, as well as a long-range plan for member and Unit development. We are at a time to refocus on creating a working plan for future membership growth and commitment to the mission of Shriners – Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. I am also privileged to have served on the Board of Governor’s of our Boston hospital for 10 years – an experience that cannot be matched – and am now an Emeritus member of that board.

My early Masonic affiliation began as a teenager in DeMolay – where I served as State Master Councilor in 1968. 25 years later, I was fortunate to serve as the Executive Officer for Maine DeMolay for five years. Our three children Laurie, Jeff and Katie all served as State officers for Rainbow and DeMolay respectively.

Professionally, I held human resources management positions since 1983, retiring in 2016. During that time, I managed employee groups in areas of benefits, compensation, recruitment, performance management and organization development. I developed an excellent working knowledge of a variety of business software applications, and am comfortable learning new applications.

My wife Becky fully supports my commitment to our Fraternity and appreciates and understands the time commitment required to perform the duties of the position.

Fraternally, John R. Knox, Past Potentate - 2011

FREEDOM IS EVERYBODY'S JOB The "Freedom Train" carried 127 of the nation's most

priceless historic documents, showing the foundation and growth of American liberty.

The purpose of the train was to raise the average level of citizenship in America. The objective sought:

1. Developing a greater awareness of the advantages we enjoy as Americans, emphasizing the relationship of hard-won personal freedoms to our development as the strongest nation of free people in history.

2. Persuading all Americans that only by active personal participation in the affairs of the community, state, and nation can we safeguard and preserve our liberty and continue to demonstrate to ourselves and to the world that the way of free men is best.

We know that our Nobles and members of their families will want to participate in this rededication: Certainly you can join with your fellow Nobles in taking:

THE FREEDOM PLEDGE I am an American. A free American. Free to speak--withoul fear Free to worship God in my own way Free to stand for what I think right Free to oppose what I believe wrong Free to choose those who govern my country. This heritage of Freedom I pledge to uphold, For myself and all mankind.

A huge thank you to Skender Leidl of Western Mountain Shrine Club and the owner of the Red Onion Restaurant.  Each year Shriners gather at his Restaurant prior to the Shrine Parade. This year he donated his copy of the 2018 Inaugural Edition Shriners International.  Thank you Western Mtn. Shrine Club and Skender for always a warm fun weekend.

UNIT’S COLONEL CORNERBy Kora Units Colonel Bernie McAllister

BUCCANEERSBrandan Roberts, President and Scribe

Ahoy from the Buccaneers! We have wrapped up our summer with parades in Rangeley, Wilton, and the Fryeburg Fair, as well as the Ladies’ Night – all of which turned out great! Now it’s time to put away our ship for the winter, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t looking for new recruits. Come join our ranks as a full-fledged Buccaneer; or, if you want to dip your toes into the pirating life, we are also looking for drivers to tow the ship during next summer’s parades – we have the vehicle, you just need a driver’s license.

We’re a family-orientated unit that enjoys meeting and greeting the children attending the Kora Shrine Circus as well as at various parades across Maine dressed up as friendly pirates. If interested, contact any of the Buccaneers and we will be glad to send you information and an application! Enjoy the beautiful Maine autumn and we hope to see you around!

CYCLE CORPSby Lenny Perkins, Captain and Scribe

Greetings from the Cycle Corps!! Yes, I know it’s been a while since I’ve submitted any news to the Sands….been busy, you know! The parade season has now come and gone for this year, with a successful summer of parades beginning in Old Orchard on Memorial Day and ending at the Northeast in Rutland. Our bikes are tired and have been put to rest for a long winter’s nap!

In addition to parading our way through Maine, we also participated in our annual Lewiston-Auburn Balloon Festival food booth fundraiser. It takes a team of dedicated personnel to make this a success, and I have to say that our group more than fits the bill.

We celebrated the 40th wedding anniversary of Director Dan and Lady Tina in grand style at the Randy & Mary Murray

It is a fall night in October. We have concluded a very busy summer and early fall. As we move towards the Annual Meeting, it is time for us to reflect and look forward to the future of Kora Shrine. We have much to be

proud of during our over 125 year history. I think it is important for every Noble to look at how they have supported Kora Shrine and to recommit to even more support in 2019. As the Unit Colonel, I know all to well the significant roles that Units and Clubs offer to keeping our success moving forward to our next 125 years.

I have asked all Unit Directors to resign their position effective before the Annual Meeting. This will allow those that want to be considered for a leadership position of Unit to communicate that to the Chief Rabban. I want to take the opportunity for the many unit Directors who have supported Lt. Colonel Bob Doyle and I for allowing us to have a great first year working together.

There will not be a Stated meeting in January prior to the Annual Meeting. However, there will be a the Units Annual Meeting on January 25th. More information will be sent out once plans for that evening are firmed out.

On January 12, 2019 at the Annual Meeting, I would ask that this year, that all Units honor Ill. Potentate Doug Phinney with a large attendence of Unit Members on the floor in the Ceremonial Hall in the afternoon. This is also an opportunity for Unit/Club Members to share with others all the work and donations that you have made to Kora Shrine and our hospitals. Please make every effort to have your parade uniform on as we honor Doug one last time.

As we move into the Holiday Season, Anne & I and Lt. Colonel Bob & Amy Doyle wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hillbilly's at Fryeberg Fair.

Trophies won at the 2018 Northeast Field Days

Standing at attention for the unit inspection

due to my work schedule, I can never attend, but I hear that it’s a smashing good time, with lots of revelry. Perhaps if I ever decide to retire……

Last, but not ever least, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all of our wonderful Ladies – we couldn’t do what we do without them. They help in so many ways, from manning the food booth to snipping errant threads on our shirts and making sure our buttons, belts and zippers are all in alignment before the Northeast inspectors arrive!

Until next time, peace and happiness…

CRAZY COPSby William Brochu, Scribe

So the carts have been put away for another year. The Crazy Cops drove the wheels off them over the summer. Nearly 20 parades and events kept the unit busy. The Rutland trip was a lot of fun and well attended by Kora. The little carts and the Nobles behind the wheels put many smiles on faces, young and grown alike. That being said, we will soon be hearing the rumble of other motors. Those will be pushing a plow and moving the white stuff around. Yes that’s right, welcome to the holidays and winter. Make sure you plan ahead and prepare for another Maine winter. The Shrine really revs up during this time of year. Feztival of Trees and so many great fun events are planned so keep your Kora calendar nearby as a reminder. Crazy Cops unit members are always encouraged to come out and volunteer whenever possible. We look forward to seeing you all soon. Stay safe.

compound in Turner in early September. Dan and Tina’s family did a tremendous job with the food and entertainment, and the evening was a complete surprise to them both. Some tears were shed, lots of laughter heard and many stories told.

We continued on to celebrate in Rutland with the grand prize being 4 additional pieces of hardware for our trophy case. We had one of the largest Kora groups in attendance, and it showed very well in both our inspection and competition activities. We are thinking we might need to add an addition to our room to hold all these wonderful trophies. I would like to thank Nobles Bob McWilliam and Lou Martin for all the work they did to get as many bikes in good working order, as well as the other Cycle Corps members who helped with maintenance and clean-up and those dedicated drivers of the bike trailer – I won’t name names as I’m afraid to miss someone!

The Cycle Corps continues to grow – we welcomed 4 new members over the course of the summer – it’s always great to have new Nobles join the pack.

Plans are in the works for some upcoming activities to keep us from getting bored over the winter months – more info to follow as details are worked out. One certain activity is the 3rd annual Holiday Gathering, graciously hosted by Noble Bob Levesque and his Lady Wendy, at their lovely home in Turner – unfortunately,

GREETERSBy Craig Rubner, Scribe

Hello Nobles and Ladies! It’s been a busy year and now we are on to fall. Soon we will have spent time together at the Feztival of Trees. It’s always a busy and interesting event. Between catching up with fellow Greeters and their Ladies to watching the kids light up when they find out Santa’s is there, it is a special time.

Since the Summer Ceremonial we’ve gotten together for some interesting events. There was a nice turn out of Greeters to celebrate Tom Ray receiving his 50 Year Veterans medal at Tranquil Lodge. At the Northeast Shrine Assoc. Field Days we enjoyed perfect weather for the weekend. Everyone we met from Rutland, Vermont was happy to have the Shrine visit their city. Many

mentioned that a loved one or friend had been helped through the Shriners Hospitals for Children. It’s always good to know that what we do makes a difference. On another note if you ever want to know the train schedules in Rutland, Mike Wise or Dwinal Pulkkinen will be glad to tell you all about them, Wooo, Wooo!

At the recent Greeters meeting our Director, Crawford Perry, recognized one of the founding members of the Greeters, Noble Tom Boyer, presenting him with a plaque denoting his 35 years of service as a member of our unit. Thank you Tom!

Soon we will be busy with all the activities that the holidays bring so I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season. Thank you for everything you do to support the Greeters, Kora Temple and the Shriners Hospitals.

La’ Math (good day) Noble Lads & Lassies,While this years' parade season has ended; the Highlanders

remain active with fall events and practice sessions and of course preparing for our 10th annual Robbie Burns Night which will be held on Saturday, January 26th when we will once again join with Scots and aficionados of all things Scottish around the world in celebrating Brother Robert Burns, the Poet Laurite of Scotland,

birthday in the traditional manner and the not so traditional and somewhat irreverent manner of our own. See the official announcement in this issue of the Sands and get your reservation in soon as attendance will be limited to 100 and the event sells out quickly. Dooon't Miss It.

Most recently the Highlanders were proud to join with The Maine State Police Pipe and Drum Corps, members of the Dunlap Pipes and Drums and our Brothers from the Anah Shrine Highlanders in participating in the dedication of the Corporal Eugene Cole Memorial Bridge in Norridgewock, ME on October 7th.

And, on a rainy October 13th with Drum Major Artie Green in the lead two stalwart veteran Pipers, Pipe Major Everett Kaherl and Pipe Major Emeritus Red Therrien supported by Drum Sargent Ryan Sherman on Bass and guest musician Drummers Beth Matthews Peterson and Renee Jean Sherman participated in the Project Hope charity event at the Scarborough Fire Department.

Next up will be Piping in the Veterans from WWII, Korea and Vietnam returning from their Honor Flight trip to Washington DC on October 28th at 11:30 AM at the Portland Jetport.

The fall season finishes up with our performance at the annual Veterans Day Prayer Service at the Holy Family Church in Lewiston on Nov. 12th at 6:30 PM. Both the Honor Flight return and Veterans Prayer Service are public events. We will spend the winter months sharpening our skills, preparing for a busy 2019 season which is already in the planning stage and of course having some fun.

The Kora Highlanders Pipe and Drum Corps is a vibrant and colorful traditional military style unit comprised of a dedicated group of Nobles augmented by a similarly dedicated group of guest musicians and steadfastly supported by our Highlander Ladies.

While we take great pride in supporting our Temple and our Hospitals through our music we also take pride in doing it well and making sure that we have fun doing it. So, if your curious about us or think the Highlanders may be the place for you plan to visit us at one of our practice sessions in the Highlander Room at the Shrine Center to share a wee dram and learn more about us. Contact Chief Highlander, Chet Matthews (207) 841-2474, [email protected] or any Highlander. No musical background? No worries, we will provide lessons. We are also still looking to recruit A FEW GOOD MEN TO FORM AN HONOR GUARD that will precede the unit at public parades and events. So even if playing the great Highland Bagpipe, Scottish Snare, Tenor or Bass drum is not your aspiration there just may be a place for you in the Highlanders.

Until next time, Slainte mhath (good health) and Sealbh math dhuit (good luck).Nobles All:

LEGION OF HONORby Bob Maxfield, Scribe

LOG ROLLERSby Ron Guptill, Treasurer and Scribe

This years' Wilton Blueberry Festival parade was a wet one. The rain started in the morning and lasted the entire day. The rain did not dampen our spirits or the people lined up along the parade route. The water just poured off from us as we marched. People cheered us on 1) for being there and 2) for putting up with the weather.

After the parade in Wilton the legionnaires, and families, were invited to the camp of John Gailey, in Wayne, Maine for a Legion of Honor picnic. We hope to make this an annual event. The rain continued, but that didn't stop us from having a great time of fellowship. John manned the grill, once he got it started. What a trooper to cook in the rain. Everyone brought something to share so there was plenty of food for all. It was well attended and everyone had the opportunity to get to know each other better. The Legion of Honor would like to thank our own John Gailey and Phyllis for their wonderful hospitality.

The NAS Field Days in Vermont went very well. The parade route was long, but the Legion of Honor stayed the course. It was well attended and a good time was had by all.

We are getting ready to have our end of the year party at Arthur and Sherry Jordan's house.

We have had a great turn out at all of our parades this year. Had a great time with many laughs. The picture of the boys that went to Wilton. It was a wet day but they had smiles on their faces when the parade was done.

Have to give a big shout out to the boys for a great job bringing home a trophy from the Northeast. Sure was a long day for them leaving home at 2am to get to Vermont and then not getting back home until 2:30am the next morning.

Greetings fellow Nobles and Ladies! Well another parade season is over and it’s safe to say we had a great one. With a focus on safety, we prospered through more than 10 parades and had some fun along the way. There were several very wet parades and a few very hot ones as well. And a memorable (albeit a bumpy) parade up in Rutland, Vermont where our unit also took Second Place in the Obstacle Course in the Northeast Fall Field Days Competition.

We are planning more kart maintenance in the off season this year and hope to have some get togethers around the holidays too. We are most definitely looking forward to the fall and winter Festivities like the Feztival of Trees and hope to see everyone there!

Anyone interested in becoming part of our Kart Family and having the privilege of wearing the brightest shirt of all the Kora Units (Except maybe the clowns), get in touch with our director Chris Bartsch (861-2772).

CASH CALENDAR by (Cash Calendar Committee: Bob Doyle,Rob Madore, Pete Provencher,

Carl Pinkham, Ken Gotreau, Gary Robinson)

We trust that everyone has enjoyed their summer full of sun, parades, barbeques, family and friends.

During the summer months we have enjoyed continued success with the Cash Calendar. We have been fortunate enough to pay out winnings everyday to some great supporters of the Kora Shrine.

In our first two years we have been able to pay out almost $20,000 in winnings and we were also able to present checks for donations to The Kora Transportation Fund, The Boston Shriners Hospital, The Springfield Shriners Hospital, and Kora Temple projects in excess of $10,000! We are already planning for the work we can perform with the proceeds from 2019 and are looking forward to another successful year.

With that being said we are already ramping up for our 2019 Cash Calendar!! We currently have tickets on sale and we encourage you to visit our Facebook page for more information (www.facebook.com/KoraCashCalendar/). If any Noble wishes to assist in selling tickets we are offering a free ticket for every 10 tickets sold. Sell 100 tickets and earn yourself 10 chances to win all year long!

So thank you all, please like our Facebook page and feel free to share posts to increase awareness of the Kora Shrine and Shriners International, and we looked forward to your continued support.

PROVOSTby Robert Selberg, Scribe

Warm greetings fellow Nobles and Ladies! The last big event the Provost were in full force was Membership Day, the Shrine was open for tours and 50 year pins were awarded. It was a warm day, the barbecue prepared for the masses, excellent and two of our members learned to carry flags in a parade....Great job guys!

Just announced are the dates for the Circus! I cant wait!! I do love a good Circus! But we have other work before that.... The Provost have been training on different topics: CPR and Evacuation of the Temple should the need arise. Now depending on the reliability of the postal service as you read this you are either getting ready for or recovering from the Feztival of Trees... What a great event! It was at this event two years ago I decided to join the Provost unit! Well, as I said it IS a great event, however, I DO have a firm steadfast rule of no Christmas music, movies or decorations until the Day after Thanksgiving...for the Feztival I make the one and only exception......

Thanksgiving night at midnight, loaded up with a full turkey dinner (or frozen pizza) and having committed myself to weeks of planning and preparation beforehand I set about to string Christmas Lights that for the past ten years have been the highlight of the season to hundreds, thousand...maybe hundreds of thousands of holiday light aficionados.... Weeks of planning, hours of work! Its all worth it! See you at the Feztival and the Circus! And Happy Holidays! I share with you a rare behind the scenes view of my Christmas Lights display, see it when it blinks to music, its magical.

Thank you Tony & Bonnie for all the years of helping with the Kora pocket calendars

BLACK CAMEL 2018MAINE DEMOLAY COUNCIL

by Nate Sessions, State Master Councilor

As the Maine high school football season come to an end The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Board of Governors are hard at work preparing for our thirtieth game. Game twenty-nine is in the books, thanks to the support of our nobles and support from our sister temple Anah. We were able to make a donation to both Hospitals and to our transportation fund in excess of $22,000.

The Board of Governors meets on the first Monday of every month and are currently looking for new board members to help us to continue to make this the supreme high school sporting event in Maine and KORA 's largest fund raising event in support of our hospital and transportation fund. Nobles if you like or don't like football but feel you could help our next meeting is Monday Nov. 5th 6pm at the Kora. Again thanks for your support.

On behalf of Maine DeMolay, I would like to thank all of our outstanding supporters who helped make this year’s Kora and DeMolay Brunch a huge success. Events like this help support the financial needs of Maine DeMolay and the programs we run. While we are incredibly grateful for the financial support we are even more appreciative of the time and effort that everyone gave to

this year’s event. That includes those that helped stuff envelopes, those that cooked and helped prepare for the day’s festivities and those that came out to join us for brunch.

I would also like to thank all of those who have helped Maine DeMolay throughout the year. 2018 has been a great year so far and with new excitement around growth and membership we expect to have positive growth  as we approach  and prepare for 2019, DeMolay’s 100th anniversary.

We have many exciting programs planned in the months ahead. Please watch for announcements on our website at www.medemolay.org.
