The holidays are once again upon us and I hope that everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday season. December will be a busy month for us and it includes our annual Christmas Brunch. This is scheduled for Sunday, December 6, 2015 at the Four Points Sheraton at Ventura Harbor. The club will be subsidizing the cost to current PAID members at $20.00 each. For those not currently paid up on their dues for 2015 the charge will be $30.00 each. There will be a “White Elephant” Gift Exchange. This is the type of gift exchange where you find a gift that you have received in the past and re-gift it at this luncheon. Please do not go out and purchase a gift, we are sure you have something you got as a gift in the past that you just cannot use or do not want around collecting dust. If you received something last year you may re wrap it and use it this year. There are a number of white elephants out there that keep re appearing every Christmas. If you absolutely have noth-ing to bring, then purchase something like a gag gift. The current board members are asking the general membership to consider running for the different posi-tions on the board listed below for the upcoming year 2016. This is your chance to become more involved and contribute your ideas and vision for where the club goes in the future. Voting for board positions will be done at the Christmas Party in December. The people that are in these positions have been doing this for a number of years and they will assist anyone who steps up to the tasks of the board positions. As president I have to compliment all of the board members for their commitment and great efforts for the club and its events. If you have an interest in helping please let me know at our next meeting or by email. Current seats: Recorder (1 yr. Term) Regalia & Raffle (1 yr. Term) Membership (1 yr. We can get more if we need them. The price for the rooms has gone up a little from last year to: $159 for a traditional Room, no view, but a nice room $209 for an ocean view King and many rooms have a fire place. MINUTES OF THE CENTRAL COAST BRITISH CAR CLUB BOARD & GENERAL MEETING November, 3, 2015

It is with sadness that I report on the recent passing of Radu Metea. Radu was a former CCBCC member who was quite active in the club a few years back prior to becoming ill. Radu was Membership Chairperson for several years and he, along with his wife, Aida, were very fun participants on the CCBCC's annual Wine Tour for many years as well as regular attendees at the CCBCC's annual Christmas/holiday party. Aida's address is 2540 Seahorse Avenue, Ventura, CA 93001-3922.

The 2015 Teddy Bear run was a success as always with 28 cars in attendance. Thanks to the combined effort of C. Darryl Struth and Michael Musser. We gathered at 10 A.M. at Douglas Penfield School for coffee, donuts and goodies. After a brief welcome talk by the schools principal the 56 teddy bears were assembled into the wagons to be carted indoors to await Santa. On December 11th we will hold a spaghetti lunch for the ortho-handicapped students, their teachers and parents and Santa will deliver a bear to each child. We all then departed on a great tour thanks to Michaels effort. His directions and warnings of twisty turns coming up were much appreciated by all! The tour took us along Foothills and through Balcom Canyon for a great 50 mile run. We ended the tour at Ventura harbor where we could all choose a restaurant for lunch. We chose Milanos Italian along with 8 or 10 others and en-joyed a great lunch. A good time was had by all.

CCBCC UPCOMING EVENTS

Annual Christmas Brunch

The annual CCBCC Christmas Brunch will be held at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel on Dec. 6th from 11am to 3 pm. We will have a room all set up for just the club. The brunch buffet will be the food. It was so delicious last year, with so much food to select from. The price is $20.00 for paid up members. Non-paid up members will pay $35.00. The extra proceeds from the July car show this year will subsidize the members Christmas brunch. There will be a “White Elephant” Gift Exchange. This is the type of gift exchange where you find a gift that you have received in the past and re-gift it at this luncheon. Please do not go out and purchase a gift, we are sure you have something you got as a gift in the past that you just can not use or do not want around collecting dust. If you received something last year you may re wrap it and use it this year. There are a number of white elephants out there that keep re appearing every Christmas. If you absolutely have nothing to bring, then purchase something like a gag gift. In the spirit of giving there will be a collection of gifts for the Rain Project in Camarillo. There will be elections of new board members at the brunch. Please consider running for one of the many open positions.

Annual Spaghetti Lunch

On Dec.11th there is a Christmas Party lunch at the Penfield School. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the lunch that is provided for the students. Usually it is a Spaghetti lunch. The students are given their teddy bears at this event. These were donated at the Teddy Bear Run on Nov. 8th this year. It is a worthwhile event and the kids really enjoy the lunch. The staff of the school are very appreciative of what we do. Penfield school is located at: 640 Jazmin Ave, Ventura, CA 93004, near Wells and Telephone in Ventura. Jack Waschbusch has kindly offered to spearhead this fun and rewarding event. Please email Jack and Pam: [email protected] if you plan on helping out or to find out more details. Drive to Cold Springs Tavern in Santa Barbara’s back country. I will have routes for those that want to take the long way on country roads (non freeway) or if you want to go the fastest way possible. These will be available at the Christmas party and the January meeting. I need to let Cold Springs Tavern know as soon as possible the probably numbers of diners we will have that day. If you know at the Christmas Brunch, please let me know so I can start a head count.

CCBCC Car events coming up

Next years CCBCC car show will be Sunday July 17, 2016. The Channel Islands Harbor has been reserved. The club is looking for someone to run the car show. In the past it was done by Martin Keller. He has reserved the date with the Channel Islands Harbor; but would like someone to take over the other duties. There were many many club members who helped out this last year and I am sure there will be the same number or more next year. A volunteer for this position will have lots of help. The club needs someone to keep track of everything for this event. Martin will pass along everything to make it a smooth transition.

Route 66 Road Trip By Joel Justin

Page 9

I had been planning a Route 66 trip for a while. Initially I planned to drive from Santa Monica to Flagstaff, AZ, but I decided that I really didn’t want to do all the “city” driving through LA and the Inland Empire. So I modified the trip to pick up Route 66 in Victorville and extend it to Holbrook, AZ.

The plan was to do it over six days: two days to Flagstaff, spending the night in Needles, then spend the weekend with our son in Flagstaff and take one day to continue east to Holbrook. Then spend two days coming back the southern route via Hwy 10.

The weather finally cooperated (not too hot and no rain/snow in the forecast) so the road trip was on. The bad news is that Pam couldn’t go this particular weekend due to a previous commitment with her friends. I woke up Thursday morning and told her it still wasn’t too late to come, and she suggested that she drive out, then fly back from Flagstaff on Monday morning. We quickly checked flights, found one that worked and booked her flight. She got packed and by 9:40am we were on the road!

Day 1: Home to Needles

We got gas at 76 in Moorpark, then headed out the 118 to the 405 to the 14. My goal was to use 76 sta-tions the whole trip for two reasons, 1) they were an iconic part of Route 66 and I worked at 76 stations in high school and college. We got off at Pearblossom Hwy and had a slight detour due to some bridge work. In Victorville, we stopped at the Route 66 Museum for photo of a Route 66 mural.

We spent a little time in the museum before heading to Helendale where we got great photo in front of old Polly Gas sign. We continued on thru Lenwood and into Barstow. We got gas at 76 in Barstow. Into Dag-gett, then Newberry Springs for lunch at the Bagdad Café.

Page 10: Volume 31 Number 9—December 2015 WWW ...centralcoastbritishcarclub.com/.../uploads/2015/11/... · Sue Wellwood reminded everyone that the X-Mass Party will be on Dec. 6, 2015 at

What a great throwback place to eat. It used to be in Bagdad, but that is now a ghost town farther east, so they reopened it here. This location was used in the movie Bagdad Café (duh!). Just after we arrived, a bus pulled up with a bunch of European tourists. They took lots of photos in front of the TR4. I think they thought it was part of the “Route 66” nostalgia! We encountered some very rough (i.e. 35-45 mph) road to Ludlow. Much of the way we paralleled Hwy 40 and at one point, a fire truck on the highway honked and waved at us tootling along.

On to Amboy and Roy's Motel & Café. Another great throwback place with several old cars and gift shop. The old hotel lobby looks like it would have 50 years ago. Roy’s was also used as an inspiration for the movie Cars. The town of Amboy was purchased by this guy several years back and he has a vision of bringing it back to life.

Route 66 was closed from Amboy to Essex, so we had to detour on Kelbaker Rd to Hwy 40, then east to Goffs. From Goffs, we went on into Needles. We got some beautiful sunset photos as we were arriving. After checking in at the hotel, we walked into old town Needles and to El Garces, an old Harvey House that is being renovated. The trains go right by it and we had fun watching several before heading to Lucy's Mexican Restaurant for dinner. We got there just before closing and had a nice dinner. Mileage for the day 330 miles.

Day 2: Needles to Flagstaff

We left the hotel at 8:45am and headed back to El Garces for several photos in the daylight, then to the Needles Welcome Wagon. Across the Colorado with a rolling photo, then off at exit 1 to Topock, Arizona. We filled up at the Shell station (no 76 stations anywhere!) in Golden Shores. Then

off to Oatman. It was pretty windy, but the drive was beautiful. We wandered thru the town and saw lots of burros begging for food. It was an old mining town surviving today on tourist traps, but was a fun place to visit. The old Oatman Hotel was where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their wedding night. The bar there has thousands of dollar bills left by travelers taped all over the place.

We then headed over Sitgreaves Pass and down towards Kingman. We stopped at the Powerhouse and got a bunch of old sign photos. Then across Hwy 40 and on to the Hackberry General Store. Another cool old place. Then thru Valentine and Peach Springs. We stopped at the Grand Canyon Caverns (but didn’tgo in), then on to Seligman .

Route 66 Road Trip (cont.)

We saw lots of Burma Shave signs along the way and had fun reading them. We ate lunch at the Snow Cap Drive-in Good food and shakes, and gags! Thru Ash Fork and into Williams where we walked around town a bit, then tasted some local Arizona wines (not bad!) before heading to Flagstaff.

We got unpacked before our son Joel got home and semi-surprised him with Pam being there. We met Joel’s girlfriend Nikki and had dinner at the Zane Grey. Mileage for the day was 236 miles (566 trip miles).

Day 3: Around Flagstaff

Nikki wasn't feeling well, so we did our "around Flag" Moss Motoring Challenge points. We got a small pumpkin patch in downtown, then the train station and Coconino County Assessor’s office. Next out to an 8,049 ft sign and a very cool place of worship – dirt floor with a view to the San Francisco peaks. On the way back into town, we got a great Flagstaff sign. Finally out to Lake Mary.

I noticed there was some rocker noise, so when we got home, I pulled the valve cover and readjusted the rockers and things quieted up nicely. #4 intake was too loose. We ordered in pizza for dinner. Nikki was feeling better and will join us for our trip to Winslow and Holbrook tomorrow. Mileage for the day was 71 miles (637 trip miles).

Day 4: Flagstaff to Holbrook

We ate breakfast at the Route 66 Railroad Diner. Yesterday there was a guy in a black Mercedes trying to flag me down. Turns out he owned the place and loved the car! We headed out the back way to Winona to see the Walnut Creek Bridge where Forrest Gump ran across. Then on to Twin Arrows to see the old trading post and the "twin arrows" , Two Guns to see the zoo ruins and Meteor City to see the trading post with tepees and fallen map. We also saw the world’s largest dreamcatcher.

In Winslow we spent some time Standin' on a Corner. I came up with some modified lyrics and we got a great photo to go along with them:

Well I'm a standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona, such a fine sight to see.

It's a girl my lord in a red TR4 slowin' down to take a look at me.

Route 66 Road Trip (cont.)

We visited the La Posada hotel which was designed by Mary Coulter and was the last Harvey House, and took photos of many old Route 66 buildings and signs. Then to Joseph City and into Holbrook.

Holbrook had lots of old Route 66 stuff. The most notable was the Wigwam Hotel. You can still get a room there and in front of each Wigwam is an old car. Maynard, the tow truck from the movie Cars, was also there. And of course, the Wigwams became orange cones in Cars. We also got a photo in front of the world’s largest Route 66 map.

We headed back to Winslow for lunch at Dar’s Route 66 Diner. The Joel and Nikki drove back to Flagstaff in the TR4 while Pam and I drove his FJ Cruiser. We BBQ’d tri-tip for dinner and watched the Broncos beat the Packers.

Mileage for the day was 197 miles (834 trip miles).

Day 5: Flagstaff to Blythe

Got up at 6am to get Pam to the airport. Joel left for work at 8 and I puttered around until 9:30 (after it warmed up) and headed out. I drove down 89 thru Sedona, then Cottonwood and into Jerome. I quickly visited the ghost town there and got a great photo in front of the fire station.

From there it was a great twisty drive into Prescott where I got lunch and gas (at 76 of course). Then I con-tinued on twisty roads down into Wilhoit, Peeples Valley and Yarnell. Then thru Congress, Aquila, Wenden, Salome and Brenda where is was a very straight drive thru the desert until I got to Hwy 10, about 30 miles east of the California border.

Along that stretch, I stopped in Quartzsite and Ehrenberg. Then on into Blythe for the night. I ate dinner at the Red Cactus Bar and Grill which was a short walk from the hotel.

Mileage for the day was 261 miles (1,095 trip miles).

Day 6: Blythe to Home

I hit the road at 7am as the sun was just peeking above the eastern horizon. Now that is was DST (yuck!), I had to set my watch back an hour. The air was crisp, but I didn’t need to bundle up too much with the Bimi-ni and windows rolled up. There were very few cars on the road – mostly trucks actually, but few of them too.

Once I hit the Palm Springs area, traffic picked up. There was an accident, then construction which backed things up a bit. Once I got thru those, I hit a small rain shower in Cabazon. It only lasted 5 minutes and only a few drops got in the car. But my dusty car was now all rain spotted!

I stopped in Redlands and Upland, and also got gas (you guessed it – at 76!). The rest of the trip was a boring drive along urban freeways. Fortunately it was mid-morning on a work day, so traffic was pretty good. I stopped at In-and-Out Burger in Moorpark before arriving home at 12:15pm. I was very pleased that the TR4 made the entire trip with no issues – barring the rocker adjustment which took all of 20 minutes. I’ll need to give her a good bath this weekend!

Mileage for the day was 263 miles (1,358 trip miles).

It is a nice driver and not a trailer queen in any way as it gets driven at every opportunity I have to drive it although it has been awarded a second place in class in 2014 and a first place in class in 2015 at the CCBCC Annual car show which is a vote by participants of the show for awards. Car was repainted to its original color of Signal Red 32 in July 2014 and was checked from one end to another for rust and corrosion and all was removed at the time of painting. The only rust that was found was in the battery box and that was replaced with a new unit. Interior was replaced at the same time, new carpets, headliner, seat cushions and covers, bumpers were re-chromed, new window seals front and back and bonnet lift strut kit installed. Car is basically stock and has overdrive which works very well. Asking 18K and will consider all reasonable offers and maybe interesting trades. I can be reached either by calling 1-503-201-1952 (cell 9am- 9 pm) or by e-mail at [email protected].

MINI Convertible: MINI Convertible: The newest offering from the MINI stable would also be the first open top MINI to be powered by BMW Group engine technology and architecture. It can fit four people snugly, and has made some upgrade in its size.

The new model will be available in MINI dealerships across the country with the option of a three-cylinder Cooper version and a faster four-cylinder Cooper S, both of which can come with a 6-speed manual transmission or steptronic automatic transmission. Potential buyers can choose from 11 exterior colors such as the new Caribbean Aqua and Melting Silver, based on the press release by MINI USA. Continued on page

Aston Martin DB9 GT: To celebrate 50 years since James Bond first drove an Aston Martin, the British car company has announced a limited edition DB9 GT in advance of the new film, Spectre.

Land Rover Evoque: “Producing a convertible Range Rover presented a unique set of engineering challenges, in-cluding maintaining torsional rigidity despite the removal of the roof structure (and) providing roll-over protection in an open-top vehicle designed to tilt to 35 degrees,” said Alan Volkaerts, Land Rover Vehicle Line Director. Improvements to the chassis designed to counteract the lack of roof created a vehicle with better torsional rigidity than the coupe model, theoretically delivering a comparable driving experience.
