December 2010
The Offi cial Publ i cation Of The White Plains High School PTA
It's been a busy time for
the PTA at White Plains
High School!
We kicked off the year
with a "Meet & Greet"
meeting in September,
with our Interim Principal,
Diana Knight, and mem-
bers of the WPHS admini-
stration and guidance
teams.
Our October meeting pro-
gram was “Guidance
Night” presented by Les-
ley Tompkins and mem-
bers of the Guidance De-
partment. Ms. Tompkins
discussed the resources
available at the College
and Career Center, and
informed parents of the
Guidance Department’s
website where a schedule
of college visits can be
found in the monthly
Guidance Bulletin, along
with many other re-
sources. Parents then
broke into smaller groups
by grade level to discuss
questions pertinent to that
year of school. We thank
Ms. Tompkins and the
members of the Guidance
Department for providing
an informative evening!
In November, the PTA
meeting program was on
"Cyberbullying and Sex-
ting". Liz Miller, of Mar-
garet's Place, presented a
very informative discus-
sion about the technology
world our kids are grow-
ing up in and how to deal
with it.
The High School tours
also took place during the
month for prospective
incoming students. We
wish those students luck
in their choices, and look
forward to meeting them
in the coming year.
We expect Turkey Bowl
to be a very exciting
event again this year, as
White Plains hosts
Stepinac. The PTA will
run Snack Bar and sell
Spirit Wear, and we
thank all the volunteers
who always help make
this Thanksgiving event
such a success!
The Craft Fair is Satur-
day, December 11, 10am-
4pm. Come do some holi-
day shopping! Remember
that all proceeds support
the PTA Senior Recog-
nition Fund. Please
come spend some of the
day shopping, enjoy lis-
tening to the Songwriters
Club and other WPHS
musical groups, and grab
a bite to eat too!
On January 13th, our
PTA Meeting will ex-
plore "Funding Re-
sources for College
Outside of Financial
Aid". Hope to see you all
there!
It’s not too late to join
the PTA! Please see the
membership flyer in this
newsletter. Children
whose parents are in-
volved in their schools
perform better. At the
High School level, it may
seem harder to get infor-
mation and find out
what’s going on as our
children become more
independent and self-
sufficient. PTA can help
provide that link to infor-
mation and resources. If
you have questions or
concerns, please let us
know! Contact us by
phone, or by email at
Best wishes during the
Holiday Season,
Donna Louis and Rose
Lovitch

On Sept. 29th, 14 excited Chinese students from Suzhou High School arrived at White Plains High School. Along with their teacher, Dai Yuena, known in English as Aileen Dai, they were met at the airport by their home hosts, and were ready to spend the next five days living as American teens. Many of the students were happy to recognize the familiar faces of our students who had gone to China last year; the others were excited to make new friends. The students were happily greeted at a ceremony Thursday morning. They were welcomed by their school hosts, staff, administrators, Dr. Clouet and several Board of Ed members. There was no time wasted as the students were whisked away by their school hosts for a full day of classes, meeting new friends and learning about American educa-tion and culture. The students spent one day visit-ing both Highlands and Eastview Middle Schools and attended Chinese classes there. They spent the weekend touring the sites of Manhattan, a
double-decker tour and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When not busy visiting the sites, the Suzhou stu-dents were free to spend time with their host families, getting to know our kids' favorite hang-outs, visiting
afterschool activities and getting their fill of American food. Just like teenagers across the world, the students very quickly found their way to the malls and spent many hours shopping for American sou-venirs. All of the Suzhou and White Plains students and families enjoyed a farewell dinner on Mon-day night, hosted by The Founda-tion for the Advancement of
International Studies (FAIS) , and it was easy to see that many long-lasting friend-ships had been formed during this whirl-wind visit. Being a host parent was a wonderful experience. We quickly adopted our new Chinese son, and our children were thrilled to spend time with their new "brother". Seeing his face light up at the
site of Central Park from the Observation Deck, or the lights of Times Square at night, was so heart-warming and more thanks than any host parent could want. It was great that our son was paired with someone so much like him, with so many similar interests. I hope and believe that their friendship will last for many years, and we welcome our new friend's quick return. It was very difficult for everyone to say goodbye on that Tuesday morning, and the Chinese students made it known that they wanted to stay. I cannot think of the words to thank our White Plains teachers, Sue Altman, Anita Nordal, Judy Plant and Joan Kass for all their hard work to make this experience a reality!

November, 2010
Dear Parents and Students,
Sometimes I think October is one of the busiest months of the year. The building seems
to begin to hum as we, students and faculty, settle into the routines of the school day.
School activities including soccer, volleyball and football thrive, and our first football
home game was a blast. The stands were crowded and our band and cheerleaders were in
full regalia. And of course, our Halloween Contest was filled with various themes, charac-
ters and fun was had by all.
The Hall of Fame celebration was held Tuesday, October 26, 2010. This year’s Honorees were Dr. Pickward J. Bash Jr.,
Anesthesiologist, Class of 1947, Richard M. Gardella, Lawyer, Class of 1953, Thomas Aleinikoff, Lawyer, class of 1970 and
Eileen Naughton, Media Executive, Class of 1975. The inductees were treated to lunch in the College and Career Center,
interviewed by the Orange and other selected students and participated in a panel discussion in the Little Theater. At three
o’clock, the festivities began and after the induction ceremony, light refreshments were served. One of the highlights of the
evening was the singing of our school alma mater “The Orange and the Black” and a musical interlude with Mr. Bill Eckfeld,
conductor and the Orchestra.
It was standing room only at Wednesday night’s special Board of Education meeting to discuss the proposed Regional Charter
School situated in White Plains. The plan includes beginning with thirty two middle school students (including ELL’s and
special education) in grades 7/8, and adding a grade each year. The Hudson Valley Charter for the Arts and Global Aware-
ness is the governing body that proposed the charter. Faculty would have been pleased to hear the comments of many of our
parents, students and retired administrators who spoke about the quality of the education in music and social studies at
White Plains High School.
Some upcoming High School events:
Thanksgiving Day Turkey Bowl- White Plains High School vs. Stepinac High School. This year Coach Chip Stevens is
being honored.
Les Roby and his Academic Team will participate in the National History Bee and Bowl to be held at White Plains High
School on Saturday, November 20th. Our academic team, with advisor Les Roby, will be televised at WPHS.
First Quarter Report Card grading window will open on November 8, 2010 and grades will be due on November 17. Re-
port cards should be mailed by November 19th. If you see problematic areas, please call your child’s guidance coun-
selor. Since this is the transitional year for 9th graders, I especially want to reach out to our freshman parents to
communicate with us.
Parent Tours for WPMS and Private and Parochial school 8 graders scheduled for November 5, 12 and 19 at 7:45 a.m.
and November 22 at 7:00 p.m.
American Education Week November 14 – 20. Parents are invited to visit their children’s teachers on Tuesday, Wednes-
day and Thursday of that week.
Presentation on Honors Program for 8th graders, January 5 at 7:00 p.m.
Since I probably will not have an opportunity to write again until the New Year, Happy Holidays.
Sincerely,
Diana Knight
Interim Principal

On November 5, 2010 the members of
the Midnight Run Club of WPHS
presented proceeds from their Slee-
pout for the Homeless to Paul Ander-
son-Winchell, Executive Director of
the Grace Church Community Center
(GCCC) for the benefit of GCCC’s
Open Arms Men’s Shelter in White
Plains. Mr. Anderson-Winchell dis-
cussed with club members some of the
programs that GCCC offers to serve
the poor and needy of Westchester
County.
Last April, twenty-five students from
WPHS participated in an overnight
event, Sleepout for the Homeless,
organized by the Midnight Run Club.
The Sleepout event involved student
participants experiencing what it is
like to be homeless, living on the
streets by sleeping outdoors in the
WPHS courtyard. In addition to a
homeless simulation, the Sleepout
was also a fund raiser and a total of
$1,800 was raised. $1,000 was do-
nated to the larger Midnight Run
Organization in Dobbs Ferry to
purchase food and
supplies. $750 was
donated to Grace
Church Community
Center’s Open
Arms Men’s Shelter
in White Plains. Spe-
cial thanks to The
Iron Tomato for their
support in serving as
a donation collection
site.
The Sleepout began
with students con-
structing their
shanty box homes.
Boxes were donated by
Leiberts Royal Green
Appliance Center and Prisco Appli-
ance and Electronics. Within the first
hour, several different shelters had
been built. Students were served a
small dinner consisting of a bowl of
soup, compliments of Nonna’s, and a
piece of bread. After
dinner, they went to
their shelters or sat
outside on the ground
talking, singing or
playing card games. By
midnight the tempera-
ture fell below 32 de-
grees and it got windy.
Everyone retreated to
their own shelters and
fell asleep, if possible!
It was a long, cold
night and it wasn’t
even winter. It helped
the students realize the
difficulties that home-
less people face every-
day.
These opportunities for our children
to make connections to real life cir-
cumstances can not be possible with-
out the dedication of the HS admini-
stration, faculty and staff. Thank you
to the staff who stayed through the
night and helped supervise this event:
Ricardo Vela, Club Advisor; Paula
Dalto, Student Activities Coordinator;
Sue Repetti and Eileen Perri, school
nurses; and Sonia Smith, security
officer.

The Youth Bureau is a proud participant of the Food Bank of Westchester’s BackPack program. The Food Bank knows that there are some families in our community who may be having a difficult time making ends meet. The Back-Pack program helps address that need by sending home a bag of non-perishable food every other Friday for a child to eat over the weekend. The last bag con-tained crackers, soup, a bag of rice, kidney beans and tomato sauce. The con-tents of the bags vary each week. So far, the program has gotten a good response from the participants at the limited sites where we have distributed the food; the Youth Bureau and Slater Center Teen Lounges, and the After School Connection programs at DeKalb and the Slater Center. The Food Bank and Youth Bureau eventually plan to expand the program to all of the after school sites the Youth Bureau serves.
If you would like more information about participating in or assisting with this program contact Adrienne Rivers, [email protected] or at 914-422-1378.
Students and their families who are looking for a way to grow have an ideal opportunity at the new Community Garden on the grounds of the New York Hospital campus. The goal of the garden is to raise crops of healthy, organically grown food to help meet the needs of those in our community in need. Additionally, it will give a wide variety of community members, young people, elders, families and community groups a chance to experience the pleasures and the learning involved in raising a garden together. This great community service opportunity will mean making a commit-ment to spend some regular amount of time at the garden, doing the work that will enable the garden to flourish, including watering, weeding, pruning, and, ultimately, harvesting and distributing the produce. The Community Garden also will provide young people with an opportunity to develop lead-ership skills. Garden members will also participate in the operations of the garden and decisions about the proceeds, through a Community Garden advisory board. For more information about the Community Garden contact Martin Rudow, [email protected] or at 914-422-1378.
