Volume 30, No. 1 Empowering Homeless Women to Create Stable Futures for Their Families March 2010
2009A year in
pictures
2009 brought a year of challenges and successes for Dakota Woodlands. We served more than 146 families with housing and services. We added an
additional bedroom to accommodate more families. And, we finished off the year by winning the Nonprofit Award of Excellence. We hope you’ll enjoy the pictures
in this newsletter that illustrate the past year at Dakota Woodlands.
As the economy continues to be a challenge for people
everywhere, it seems easier to relate to the people who
need Dakota Woodlands. In 2009, we saw more and
more residents who didn’t have economic security. Many had
no income when they moved in and no savings to fall back
upon. Many underwent life-changing transitions and a lack of
stability. The vast majority of our residents lived in their
previous residences for less than one year.
We sheltered 110 families in our 22 bedrooms and provided
supportive and follow-up services for 36 other families
throughout the year. Similar to past years, the average family
size in 2009 was 2.1 members. We served 150 children: 53
percent were newborn, 30 percent were 5-12 and 17 percent
were teenagers. Our residents stayed at Dakota Woodlands an
average of 61 days.
Despite the dire situations that our residents are in when they
move into Dakota Woodlands, by the time they leave, many
improve their income (some even double it), others earn their
GEDs, and they all strengthen their families. They do this with
the support of our wonderful staff and volunteers.
Dakota Woodlands’ services are tailored to provide residents
with what they need -- and our resident success rate of more
than 89 percent is a strong indicator that we deliver. In
November 2009, Dakota Woodlands was recognized for that
success.
Dakota Woodlands was recognized for its accomplishments by
being selected for the Minnesota Nonprofit Excellence Award.
The Award is presented by the
Minnesota Council of
Nonprofits and MAP for
Nonprofits. It honors nonprofit
organizations that make
outstanding contributions to
Minnesota's high quality of life.
Recipients are reviewed and
selected by a blue ribbon panel
of nonprofit leaders after
demonstrating superiority with
more than a hundred management principles and practices for
nonprofit excellence in their operations, governance, human
resources, advocacy, financial management and fundraising
and showing quality, responsibility and accountability.
Dakota Woodlands celebrates its 30th anniversary of service In 2010, Dakota Woodlands will reach its milestone
anniversary of serving homeless families for 30 years.
Throughout those years, Dakota Woodlands’ staff has adapted
its services to reflect the needs of its residents. So too in 2010,
we will be adding new services, continuing our commitment to
excellence. We would appreciate your assistance to share the
Dakota Woodlands story and we are grateful for your
continued support.Dakota Woodlands’ dedicated staff gathers for a groupphoto after receiving the Award of Excellence.
