Alverno, a Catholic High School for Girls that has resided in Sierra Madre since 1960, sits on 13 acres of land and includes the historic Villa Del Sol d’Oro, the site of many community events and photographic shoots, movies and television shows. e site is bordered by Grand View, Highland, Wilson and Michillinda Avenues and was bought by Franciscan nuns in 1941 who started the school. Since 1978, however, the school has been run by the Immaculate Heart lay community. With a student population of 262 girls, Alverno is an independent Catholic High School. Over the past several years, the school has been working on an update to its’ Master Plan which includes plans to expand its facilities. e expansion includes adding a new Soccer Field, a new multi-purpose building and improvements on the existing soſtball field. Although all of the plans are confined to space within the current boundaries of the school, neighbors in the vicinity are not pleased. “We are worried about the increased noise level, the extended hours of outside activities, and the added traffic. is expansion will totally alter the lives of everyone in the area immediately surrounding the school”, said one Wilson Avenue resident. Signs protesting the expansion have been visible for more than a year. Alverno officials have held several open meetings in the past inviting to the community to voice their concerns. Another is scheduled for Monday, August 31 st as an update prior to the city’s hearings in September. Alverno officials recently notified homeowners in the area of the meetings. In their communiqué they ask for community support. “is hearing addresses our right to continue weekend private rental events, such as weddings and receptions which provide critical funds for our school budget and the Villa’s restoration.” At the city’s hearings, the school will be presenting its’ case for updating the Alverno Master Plan as required by the city of Sierra Madre. According to Alverno officials, the last update of the plan was in 1960. A Master Plan, which must be approved by the city, is required of any site that exceeds 1 acre and has development plans that will be carried out in stages. According to City Manager Elaine Aguilar in an interview held when the project first garnered attention, “e plan is typically something that the property owners develop. If the project is over one acre and is phased over time, then a master plan must be filed.” Such a plan would also be required should the Monastery decide to develop their land. Even the Congregational Church, which has four separate sites that combined exceed 1 acre have to submit a Master Plan. Aguilar noted that in the instance of both Stonehouse and 1 Carter, no Master Plan was submitted. Aguilar says that those developments are limited to the one phase currently approved by the city. e Master Plan requirement is part of the 1996 General Plan. Submittal and approval of the Master Plan without the support of the community, especially those directly impacted by the expansion will be difficult. I’m always amazed that the Friday Family Festival has not only maintained its popularity after all these years, but keeps getting bigger and better every week, closing down for only about two months a year. I sound like my Dad, but it seems that only yesterday, the early ‘70s, we were trying to convince the merchants on Myrtle Ave, that a change was needed in Old Town. Half of the stores were vacant and the other half refused to allow the City to dig up the street from Lime to Olive for redesigning with a new plan for survival. Every month was the wrong time of the year; finally, while Stan’s Sewing Machine was still grumbling and threatening, we had to bite the bullet and “do it”. Most of the merchants, in fact, all of them, had back door entrances so it wasn’t a total loss for the extensive time it took to give Monrovia Old Town a new look. By the time all was completed I was the first woman Mayor and rumors were rampant that there would probably be hanging flower baskets on the new street lamps. Never passed my mind, but that wouldn’t have been too bad. At one point along the way, midst all of the torn up construction, Sam Silverman from Box Jewelers and I had coffee served to us in the middle of the intersection at Myrtle and Lemon. So, yesterday I ventured down to Old Town to see how things are these days. The entire business started as only the Farmers’ Market and was very popular. Then, like Topsy, it really grew, the idea being to feature local arts and crafts items. I understand it has become pretty non-arts and crafts with people bringing in jeans, women’s clothes, shoes and anything else they can get their hands on, probably from outlets on the outskirts. From

Lemon to Chestnut, it is unbelievable to see that sea of white-pointed-covered booths and food stands, solidly packed in on both sides of the street. One could do entire Holiday shopping right now: every kind and make of jewelry, hats, handbags, dresses, sports shoes, you name it. It’s hard to take it all in and people come regularly with the entire family from all over the valley every week. The Farmers’ Market was at the south end of the avenue, covering at least two blocks. All of the fruits, vegetables and breads looked beautifully fresh and were doing a land-office business. I had a chance to visit with Kathy and Emmy Mueller at the Monrovia Bakery before closing time at 5 pm. They have been in Monrovia forever and said they had no plans for retirement at this point, although the economy had hit them slightly but things were once again picking up. Rudy’s Mexican Restaurant is one of the popular eating places on the avenue and they have set up a big stand on the corner of Colorado, next to their restaurant, to entice everyone on Fridays. Ran into Marcia McCarville and Gloria Huss having a bite at the outside tables. Marcia’s Mom, Phyllis had been on the Council and City Treasurer before her death a few years ago. Her Dad, Ray belongs to our Senior Club and is recovering from hip surgery at the Leven Oaks Hotel up the street. Gloria has owned and operated Monrovia Floral for umpteen years and has been active in Downtown affairs. All in all, The Family Festival is one huge success and has been a model around the state, even in my day, probably more so now. Having the Krikorian Theater just north of the festival is also a drawing card. [email protected]

Duarte

Although he sailed solo around the world – the youngest person to ever accomplish that daunting feat, Zac Sunderland, the 17 year-old adventurer never traveled Route 66. But he will on Saturday, Sept. 19, when Sunderland leads Duarte’s 14th annual Salute to Route 66 Parade as the Grand Marshal.

“We’re very excited about having Zac Sunderland as our Grand Marshal. We think the crowd is going to love seeing and meeting this amazing and courageous young man,” said parade director K.C. Caracci.

Sunderland was 16 when he set sail from Marina Del Rey on June 14, 2008 to circumnavigate the world in his 36 foot sailboat, Intrepid. He successfully completed his 28,000 mile journey 13 months later, arriving back to his home port to a cheering throng of family, friends and other admirers on July 17, 2009.

Sunderland said he is looking forward to his journey down the Mother Road, which happens to be the theme of this year’s Route 66 Parade.

“Route 66 is historic and the parade sounds like a lot of fun. I can’t wait to get out there and see Duarte and meet the people,” said Sunderland. The number 66 is significant for Sunderland. “66 was the number on my football jersey for two years when I played linebacker for Grace Brethren High School in Simi Valley,” he said.

This year’s Route 66 Parade will step off at 10 a.m., an hour later than in previous years. The parade starts at the northeast corner of Huntington Dr. and Cotter St. and proceeds east along a one mile strip of Huntington Dr., historic U.S. Route 66.

The theme of this year’s parade is “Journey Down the Mother Road” and will feature antique and classic cars, bands, equestrian units, and hundreds of parading participants representing local schools, churches and community organizations.

Immediately following the parade, the community is invited to attend the City’s 52nd Anniversary Picnic and the Route 66 Vintage Car Show at Royal Oaks Park. Dozens of community

groups will host food and game booths at the Picnic which will also feature live entertainment. Picnic-goers will also have a chance to meet Grand Marshal Zac Sunderland, in person. Sunderland will sign autographs at the Picnic. On the Vintage Car Show side of Royal Oaks Park, dozens of beautiful antique and classic cars will be on display. Adding to the fun, will be a Crafts Fair featuring artisans and crafters from all over Southern California.

Leading the list of businesses helping to

support the parade this year are Parade sponsors: City of Duarte, Southern California Edison, and StorAmerica. Breakfast sponsor is Royal Oaks Manor. Mother Road sponsors are: Home Depot, AT&T Yellow Pages, and Burrtec Waste. Gold sponsors are City of Hope, Joe’s Place, and Elks Lodge 1427.

Groups interested in participating in the parade, Car Show or Crafts Fair can download application forms from the parade website, www.duarteroute66parade.com. The website is also the place to get the latest updates on the parade and Route 66 Car Show activities. For more information by phone, call (626) 260-0993.

The Mount Wilson Observa-tory Association’s next meet-ing and free public lecture will be Sunday, August 23, 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Altadena Public Library. The speaker will be Theo ten Brummelaar, Associate Direc-tor of Georgia State University’s CHARA Array. The title of his talk is “Recent Results from the CHARA Array.”

The CHARA interferometer array on Mount Wilson has the largest baselines of any instru-ment of its type. It is also one of the few interferometers rou-tinely making images of stellar surfaces. Dr. ten Brummelaar will give a brief update of the in-strumentation on the array and

then describe some of the more interesting of the recent scien-tific results. These include: the first image of a main sequence star other than the sun, the first image of a rotating star, and the first images of an interacting bi-nary system.

This lecture is free of charge, and all are welcome. There will be light refreshments beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The Altadena Public Library is located at 600 E. Mariposa Street in Altadena, two stop signs west of Lake Avenue at the corner of Mariposa and Santa Rosa Avenue (“Christmas Tree Lane”).

Exit the 210 freeway at Lake Avenue in Pasadena and go ap-

proximately 2.5 miles north to Mariposa Street in Altadena. Turn left on Mariposa, go to the second stop sign, turn left on Santa Rosa, and turn into the parking lot at the first driveway on your right. Go to the Com-munity Room.

This talk is sponsored by the Mount Wilson Observatory As-sociation (MWOA), a volunteer service organization assisting the Observatory in public out-reach. For more information on this talk, contact MWOA Program Chair Bob Eklund, [email protected]. For more information on MWOA, including how to become a member, see the web site www.mwoa.org.

Pet of The Week

If you get a call from someone claiming to be a representative from Pasadena Water and Power and asking for a credit card number for a past-due payment, or offering to come by and pick up cash for the payment, don’t do it! Anyone who receives such a call should contact Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241 so a report can be filed. Everyone who lives or works in Pasadena is encouraged to take the MoveAbout Tours from Aug. 22 through Sept. 27 to experience the city in a different way and share their thoughts with city planners. Each of the six self-guided tours have been designed to highlight specific issues such as residential density, walkability, bikeability, architectural design, open space, re-use of historic buildings and more. The tours are part of a communitywide outreach effort to help Pasadenans with four of the most important elements of the General Plan: Land Use, Mobility, and Open Space and Conservation. Guidebooks with simple instructions, background information, questions to consider, maps and more will be available beginning Saturday, Aug. 22, at locations throughout Pasadena including City Hall, public libraries and community centers. A guidebook will also be posted online at www.cityofpasadena.net/generalplan. Guidebooks in Spanish will be available as well. Those who take one or more tours will be able to get their guidebooks stamped by merchants along the route, which will make tour-takers

eligible for free prizes at a General Plan community open house in November. The ARTS Bus and Walking Tour combines a ride through Pasadena ’s biotechnology and healthcare district and a walking tour through one of the community’s oldest residentialneighborhoods. On the Bicycle Tour cyclists will experience a variety of streets designated or soon-to-be designated for bicycle travel, visit several parks and see the city’s latest solar installation. Drivers will have the choice of taking an east or west tour, or both. On the Driving Tour East they will experience a neighborhood that is transitioning from residential to industrial uses, a group of suburban-oriented residential and commercial developments, and some of Pasadena ’s ethnic commercial business districts. Those who take the Driving Tour West will experience the diversity of Pasadena ’s built landscape as they drive from the health care and biotechnology corridor to a thriving transit-oriented urban center and historic northwest neighborhoods that are in transition. People who take the Gold Line Tour will visit four of the six stations in Pasadena

and experience some of the adjacent mixed-use housing and commercial developments. The Open Space Tour will provide an opportunity to see the full range of Pasadena ’s parks, community gardens and more. “As Pasadena ’s General Plan is updated it is important to include the perspectives of people from throughout the community,” said Stephanie DeWolfe, deputy director of the Planning and Development Department. Police announced Wednesday the arrest of a mother and her boyfriend in the alleged torture and death of their 2 year-old toddler Rene Torres. Both, Maria Pelaez, 29, and Gabriel Diaz, 32, of Pasadena were arrested Tuesday night police said. They were later charged with taping the feet, legs and arms of Torres who had died earlier in the night of asphyxiation. According to Lt. John Dewar, Torres was found deceased by paramedics in the 500 block of Summit Ave. at 6 a.m. Tuesday after Pelaez called 911. Police Thursday released the audio of the call in which Pelaez sounds frantic. The suspicious nature of the death led police to open an investigation they said. The suspects were arrested after interviews and examination of evidence pointed to foul play. Detectives, at the residents, found clothing which had been taped. The suspects later admitted that they had repeatedly bound the child over the last several months as a form of discipline. Police also said, “on occasion,” the victim’s mouth was taped shut. Their bail was set at $1 million each. Pasadena Police Chief Bernard Melekian said, “It is unfortunate that too many times, we find that children have died at the hands of another and it is particularly disturbing when the evidence leads us to those who are the primary caretakers.”

City Launches New Website

Racing an October 1 deadline the city council voted unanimously Monday night to put parking restrictions in place that would tow cars away on narrow streets along the urban-wildland interface during red flag days —extreme fire hazard. Councilmember Steve Haderlein explained that Oct. 1 was the official start of the heighten fire season but also said, in reality, fire danger in Southern California occurs all year round. Parking would be prohibited on streets narrower than 27 feet affecting approximately 32 miles of roadway. On streets 27 feet to 32 feet wide parking would be allowed on one side. Red flag is triggered when relative humidity is 15 percent or less with sustained winds of 25 mph according to the United States National Weather Service. Haderlein also chairs the Public Safety Committee which he said had an

extended discussion on the issue. Three additional recommendations were made to the council he said. All passed unanimously. “First would be that the ordinance, what would put this in place, would be put on something of fast track…,” he said. “The second direction to staff was to have temporary signage in place, so as to have this in place as soon as possible.’ Members of the Linda Vista Annandale Homeowners Association had voiced opposition to placing any signs along streets around the Rose Bowl saying it would lower property value and block views of historic homes. The association had suggested using other notification such as reverse 911. There was no request Monday night for public comment. Haderlein said the third recommendation was to work with the Rose Bowl Operating Company (ROBC) and UCLA to deal with parking of large crowds or events on red flag days. The ordinance also upgrades the Pasadena Local Emergency Alert System (PLEAS) by appropriating $117,380 from General Fund. Fire Chief Dennis Downs said they plan

to give residents the option of being alerted by cell phone. He said they currently buy cell phone information from AT&T and Verizon. “They only publish telephone numbers, listed or unlisted, but that’s what we use,” he said. He explained the new enhancements would allow them to use the system citywide.

Tow-Away Zones Now Set For High Fire Danger

Rose Parade, Game, Security TightenedBy Dean Lee

Police were given the ability Monday night to step up enforcement for those Rose Parade goers and Rose Bowl fans who refuse to comply with laws surrounding the events. The city council unanimously approved an ordinance to prohibit trespassing in staging areas of the parade and game. The ordinance will also prohibit the placement of unauthorized items along

the parade routes, including couches, mattresses or large seating assemblages. Councilmember Steve Haderlein said the ordnance was meant to stop three dangers, first was to stop fans from charging onto the field after the Rose Bowl game. The second, he said, was to establish a security zone around “TV corner,” the intersection of Colorado Blvd and Orange Grove Blvd. Haderline said the third was banning large items from the parade route.

“The benchmark or guideline that was used for what item was too big was explained that if one individual can’t move the item then it’s perceived as too big,” he said. “So a couch would but a single folding chair would not be too big.” Commander Michael Korpal said later, “We want people to know that if you go out on the football field after the game you will be arrested.” He explained that the ordinance was meant to give officers the discretion to ticket, remove or arrest someone, “this is just another tool we have to keep the public safe.” He said. After there was some concern that folding chairs could be banned from the parade route, Korpal said, they were just used as an example. He said large “reserved” areas of roped off chairs present a fire hazard. Councilmember Terry Tornek asked

what resections would be placed at TV corner. Korpal said the city has no law on the books dealing with someone that does not want to leave. He said 50,000 to 60,000 spectators line that area making it the largest threat in the event of a terrorist attack. “If you are someone who wants to do something bad on the parade route this would be a massive area that would get you some television coverage,” he said.

SIERRA MADRE POLICE VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT

When Sharon Murphy talks about the Sierra Madre Public Library, she gets that look of nostalgia in her eyes. "There's something about walking into a library...It's like being in a museum but you're surrounded by great books instead of great works of art. It's a community unto itself," she said. Sharon should know. She's spent many hours in the Sierra Madre Public Library, first with her children during their school years, then on her own, and now as an active volunteer. Although she and her husband, Dennis, live in Arcadia, Sharon spends many volunteer hours in Sierra Madre. She has been chair of the Art Fair, sponsored by Friends of Sierra Madre Library, for over a decade. She was vice president, and then became president of the Friends Board for two years, but that's not all she does. Sharon fills in at the library when she's needed, such as assisting with the library grounds that have exhibited a renaissance recently. Years ago, Sharon was first asked to a Friends meeting by Chris Soldate and Mary Talwar. The meetings then were in the library basement. Sharon was very impressed by the dedication of those volunteers around her, who formed such a cohesive core. She decided it was the place for her. "When the kids needed a library, we always seemed to end up in Sierra Madre." Christopher and Shannon, while attending Anoakia and then Clairbourne, would come to Sierra Madre for their school research. They also loved the Summer Reading Program. During those years Sharon participated in the children's activities, including sports and music recitals, and she helped with everything from

field trips to the lunch program, to Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts. Then Christopher moved on to Loyola High and Shannon was at Mayfield. Now Christopher, 28, is married to Megan, works for IMG Golf in North Carolina. Shannon, 26, works for a movie producer in Beverly Hills. Sharon drives for Meals-on-Wheels and has added Sierra Madre Civic Club to her volunteer repertoire, serving on the Board for five years and now working as property manager, keeping the club's supplies catalogued and organized. Helping with Civic Club is like choosing from

a smorgasbord of activities, she said. This very active group of women participate in about every town activity, from the Wistaria Festival to Halloween, from Huck Finn Days to Mt. Wilson Trail Race, Relay for Life and more. The club also hosts its major fundraiser, a salad luncheon, in April. Additionally, the group runs a gift

shop of mostly knitted objects they make. Civic Club members participate in any of those events plus many more not mentioned here. "You can find some activity that relates to what you enjoy doing," Sharon said. Why does Sharon volunteer almost 10 hours weekly? "You're helping a cause, making a difference. And you always have a family of workers like yourself," she answered. "Friends for life." She and Dennis have been married for almost 30 years. He's senior vice president for advertising at HRTV -- the horse racing televising channel. Even though the Murphys live in Arcadia, Sharon noted, "You never really leave Sierra Madre."Environmentally Speaking,

Did You Know? Cutting Costs & Emissions

(NAPSI)−There’s good news --and better news--for consumers who want to cut energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.First, the good news. A new study contends that a policy that attempts to address both issues--reducing both costs and emissions--is both possible and beneficial. The analysis found that implementing a suite of climate, energy and transportation policies would allow the United States to meet an emissions-reduction cap of 56 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 and save consumers and businesses $465 billion in that year. According to the study, “Climate 2030: A National Blueprint for a Clean Energy Economy,” the average U.S. household would enjoy a net savings in 2030 of $900 on its energy bills: $580 on transportation (fuel, vehicle and driving) costs and $320 on electricity, natural gas and heating oil. Businesses collectively would realize net energy bill savings of $130 billion. The two-year study was conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).The UCS believes its policy recommendations would put the nation on a path to reduce heat-trapping emissions by at least 80 percent below 2005 levels by 2050, the target that UCS experts contend is necessary to prevent

the worst effects of climate change. The even better news is that consumers and businesses would not have to wait 20 years to see benefits from UCS’s recommended initiatives. The analysis found that by 2020, the United States could meet a cap of 26 percent below 2005 levels and save consumers and businesses $346 billion in that year. Most of the net energy bill savings over the next two decades would be due to more energy-efficient buildings and industrial processes, cleaner cars and a more efficient transportation system. The UCS analysis concluded that the United States could reduce energy demand by a third through improved efficiency in buildings, industry and transportation systems. Said UCS President Kevin Knobloch, “Combining a carbon cap with strong efficiency, renewable electricity and transportation standards can deliver those emission cuts and save Americans a substantial amount of money.” For more information, go to www.ucsusa.org.A new study contends that consumers would benefit from public policies that reduce emissions and costs at the same time.

Senator Bob Huff (R – Dia-mond Bar) responded today to the Governor’s Special Session on Education to qualify Cali-fornia for federal “Race to the Top” education funding. In order for California to become eligible and competitive for the Race to the Top grants, the legislature and Governor must make certain reforms.

“I stand with the Gover-nor’s call to action on educa-tion today, said Senator Bob Huff. “It is imperative that we act as quickly as possible so our state can obtain the hundreds of millions of dollars in federal “Race to the Top” education funds.”

“I am thrilled to see the Governor has looked to my legislation as a way for the state to race straight to the top as

the most viable state in the na-tion, including my legislation to give parents and students more public school options. This is an opportunity to not only bring in more funding for our education system, at a time when we have had to cut state funding, but also make com-mon sense reforms to make all of our education dollars work better and more efficiently. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Senator Huff is the author of two bills to expand public school choice in California, which the Governor has mod-eled as part of his education initiative. SB 680 would ex-pand the number of “Districts of Choice” in the state which allow students to attend cer-tain schools outside of their as-signed school districts.

“For all intents and pur-poses, the state has a monopoly on the education system and students should at least have the opportunity to choose what school is best for their needs, said Huff. Similar to our com-munity college system, the pro-gram puts healthy pressure on schools to perform their best in order to retain enrollment.”

SB 266 would establish a statewide open enrollment program for students attending low performing schools, giving parents the freedom to move their children out of persistent-ly low performing schools.”

“The Governor also sees the vital role charter schools play in providing parents with quality public school options. As a legislator who has worked at length on this issue, I sup-

port the Governor’s proposal to lift the cap on charter schools in the state. Limiting the num-ber of charters in the state only stifles innovation and opportu-nities for kids to learn.”

“For weeks now, I have called for eliminating the teacher union backed law which precludes the state from using test scores to evaluate our teachers. I am pleased to see the Governor agrees we should move forward with this reform.

Senator Bob Huff is the Vice-Chair of the Senate Edu-cation Committee and Repub-lican Caucus Chair. He repre-sents portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties.

Student achievement in Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) continued to rise in 2009, according to the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) results released today by the California Department of Education. Elementary school student achievement continued to rise in all subjects, particularly at schools targeted for improvement in 2008, while most middle and high schools posted gains in English Language Arts.“I am pleased that PUSD achieved some of the highest one-year gains ever in the number of students scoring proficient or advanced on the state test,” said Superintendent Edwin Diaz. “Due to our sustained emphasis on powerful instruction, elementary schools continued to accelerate improvement, and several middle and high schools showed significant improvement.” The STAR program assesses

public school students’ knowledge of the California academic content standards in grades two through 11. These standards specify what students should learn in each grade level for the following subject areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and History/Social Science. Under the California Standards Test (CST), one of six components of the STAR program, student performance is reported in five levels: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic and far below basic. Only advanced and proficient levels are considered as meeting grade level standards. District-wide, 46% of PUSD students scored at or above proficient in English Language Arts, an increase of 5% from the prior year. The percentage of district students scoring at proficient and advanced increased for all grades from 2008 to 2009, except grade 9, and seven schools showed a ten or higher percentage point

increase. In Math, PUSD posted a 4% gain, boosting the number of students scoring proficient or advanced to 43%. More than 62% of second through fifth grade students scored proficient or advanced. Four schools gained ten or more percent in the number of proficient and advanced scorers. Seven schools demonstrated that 70% or more students scored proficient or above in one or more subjects. Among them are Don Benito, Field, Franklin, Hamilton and Willard in English Language Arts, and Sierra Madre in both English Language Arts and Math. Eleven schools were distinguished by double-digit gains compared to last year, including Norma Coombs, Hamilton, Roosevelt, San

Rafael, Altadena, Longfellow, Madison, Webster and Eliot. Secondary school results were mixed; while the majority of scores were higher, the gains were smaller than those for elementary. “We will make additional efforts to increase levels of proficiency at the middle and high schools, especially in Math and Science,” said Mr. Diaz. “In the year ahead, we will intensify our focus on secondary students with the addition of programs to engage and personalize the learning experience.”

STAR Test Results Show PUSD Improving

Sierra Madre School continues to lead the district in academic excellence.

During a radio interview with former Sen. George McGovern (D-S.D.), the host pointed out that although most of what we know of the Watergate Scandal was

revealed during Richard Nixon’s second term in office, enough was known about the break-in, hush money and connections to the Committee to Re-Elect the President prior to the 1972 election that it could have been made an issue during McGovern’s presidential campaign. “Why wasn’t it?” McGovern replied that it had been considered, discussed and argued among his top campaign staff. Finally, they decided not to inject the issue into the campaign, with the consensus being that the American people simply wouldn’t believe that the President of the United States could be a party to such things. Although in view of what’s happened over the past eight years that notion seems a bit quaint, there’s still a lot of truth to it - especially if the officeholder is someone you voted for. There’s also a tendency to, as President Obama put it, “Look forward, not backward” (which is how I wanted to respond to a reminder of an overdue parking ticket). There are those who, upon learning about the recently released documents detailing White House involvement in, and political motivations behind, the firings of U.S.

Attorneys prior to the 2006 elections, want to see those responsible held accountable for subverting the principle of an independent

judiciary. There are others who would rather just take Karl Rove’s word for it that the documents which, according to Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers (D-Mich.), describe Rove as a “driving force” behind the firings, in fact exonerate him. It’s not just a matter of choosing between letting bygones-be-bygones and settling scores, but in recognizing that past actions have caused real damage, to institutions and to people, that is ongoing and needs to be rectified. Just ask Don Siegleman.Former Alabama Governor Siegleman earned his law degree at Georgetown, was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, and served as Alabama’s Secretary of State, Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor before being elected Governor in 1998. He was instrumental in expanding auto manufacturing in his state and was a tireless advocate for universal education. A close race for re-election in 2002 ended with the Associated Press declaring Siegleman the winner and a victory speech.Shortly after midnight on election day, however, Republican election officials in Baldwin County discovered a “technical glitch” and found that Republican Bob Riley had in fact won with less than one-quarter of one percent of the vote. Although Siegleman’s allies found it odd this “technical glitch” effected only the governor’s race among all the other measures on the ballot, the governor eventually declared, “I’ve decided that a prolonged election controversy would

hurt Alabama”, and conceded. That same year, Siegleman was indicted on federal fraud charges, which were dismissed when the judge threw out the prosecutor’s evidence.Republican lawyer Dana Simpson signed a declaration that she’d heard Bob Riley campaign strategist Bill Canary assure other supporters that “Karl” was working with U.S. Justice Dept officials to make sure Siegleman wouldn’t present a threat, and had herself been ordered by Karl Rove to “catch Siegleman cheating on his wife”. (Soon after making these charges, Simpson’s house burned down and her car was driven off the road. “Anytime you speak truth to power, there are great risks. I’ve been attacked.”) As Siegleman campaigned to reclaim the governorship from Riley in 2006, he was indicted and tried on charges of fraud, bribery and obstruction of justice. It was alleged that while in office, Siegleman traded a seat on a state regulatory board for a contribution to the (unsuccessful) campaign for a state lottery to fund education, though the donor had already been serving on that board under three previous Republican administrations. Although supposedly having recused herself, the prosecution was guided by U.S. Attorney Leura Canary, wife of Republican strategist and Rove associate Bill Canary. There was talk that presiding judge Mark Fuller, appointed by President George W. Bush a few years earlier, would “hang Don Siegleman”. A major prosecution witness was convicted of extortion, and it was confirmed he’d not been present at a key event (the writing of a check) he claimed to have witnessed. Prosecutors failed to turn over to Siegleman’s defense team notes from interviews held

with this witness. Risking her job, a Justice Department staffer turned over documents confirming the prosecution’s inappropriate contact with jurors - allegations Judge Fuller refused to pursue. Leura Canary continued to advise subordinates handling the case, arguing that Siegleman’s charge that his prosecution was politically motivated was grounds for a stiffer sentence. Prosecutors asked for a sentence of thirty years, but Judge Fuller sentenced Don Siegleman to more than seven years in federal prison and a $50,000 fine. Siegleman was denied the customary 45 days to “get his affairs in order” and was led out in shackles to a maximum security prison, with much of the time spent in solitary confinement. In July 2007, a petition signed by 44 former states Attorneys General, Republicans and Democrats, petitioned Congress to investigate the matter. They noted that in the case of Alabama Governor Guy Hunt, a Republican accused of pocketing $200,000 (no one was accused of profiting in the Siegleman case), the same prosecutor had recommended probation. In March 2008 the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals approved release during appeals, but a year later upheld most charges - though agreeing to review the sentence. It’s easy to simply avoid such stories and pretend they couldn’t happen - not here, not today. But it’s important to pay attention and to encourage coverage in the media, as this story was covered in a segment on 60 MINUTES last year. The segment aired all over the country - except for Huntsville, Alabama, where the CBS affiliate claimed they briefly went dark because of another “technical glitch”.

As I See It

Please notice my title. In a way (weigh) the one word says it all. As you may recall, I started writing this column almost two years ago with my description of my successful weight loss program. I had thrown away my diabetic medications and wrote of my joy at attaining new levels of overall health and energy. Later columns described my continued weight loss and the surprise of doctors at the ease at which I maintained my new life style.

I awoke at dawn, walked my dog as we enjoyed the sunrise. I meditated. I ate my vegan meals and arrived at work on time. I played golf and tennis several times a week. There’s more but it’s pointless to go on because now it is no more.

Alas, I have gained over fifty pounds. (I’m afraid to get on a scale and learn my actual weight.) I am having trouble getting up from couches and getting out of car seats. My closest friends are secretly telling my wife that she must do something. They are all concerned and I pretend not to notice. My life of pretense has begun as I portray to myself a kind of daily unconcern as every day I get FATTER. Really, I should go out and buy new clothes as my tight fitting; button popping wardrobe has become a disgrace. I am like a man in a burning building focusing on reading a book while everything around him is about to go up in flames. Really, I like that analogy. I am like my country occupying itself with pointless debate while the whole planet is being destroyed.

No, I am not going to allow myself to be distracted by shifting to some sort of description of political concern. All right, one more sentence. This article is not just about me; it is about all of us and our own compliance in self-destruction.

Okay; back to me. As the title of this article proclaims I am WEIGHTING --- waiting to die. How unpleasant it is to write this. Really, I don’t believe it. I imagine that I have some control of my behavior. The creation of this very article is my attempt at lighting a flare that will illuminate my internal being enough to force me to notice so that I can RESCUE myself. I must become my own search and rescue team. The weight of this realization is staggering. I think we all know we make choices as to how we live our life but we do not want to be held accountable for these choices.

I am already tired of the subject matter of this article; probably you are tired of reading it. I know what I have to do to lose weight. Yes - the secret is EAT LESS and notice what I eat. On my former diet, which lasted about a year and a half I avoided soda, (diet soda especially), alcohol, caffeine, starchy vegetables like potatoes and white rice, fried foods, white flour, meat, fish, and all dairy products. I drank lots of water; oh and I almost forgot. I declared war on elevators and walked the lonely stairways of the county courthouses.

Now, I’m really concerned. Just writing that last my paragraph has exhausted me. How did I do it? Really, I haven’t a clue. It just happened - sort of the way shaving off my beard or shaving my head just happened. It happened but did I have anything to do with these choices? Did I make them happen? My answer right now, to myself, seems crazy. It feels like I had little to do with these choices and, believe it or not, none of it was very hard.

Well, what can I say? I want it to happen again. I’m tired of weighting around. I’d like to say I’m committed but right now I don’t trust myself. No matter what I say I’m going to do, I have great doubts about my ability and actual desire to do it.

Okay, here’s my commitment. One breath at a time I’m going to do the best that I can do. I’m going to imagine that we’re all in this together---supporting each other so that we won’t be weighted down by our own fears and doubts. I guess that’s what this article has helped me to do. I kind of understand that I can’t do it alone. I am reaching out to you—opening my eyes to the wonders of this world that WE are so fortunate to share. I hope this is the only SURVIVAL SKILL WE NEED….

WEIGHT NO MORE I may be a bit carried away; after all, it’s only our lives.

STUART Tolchin On...LIFEWEIGHTING

This is the first part of a two-part Q and A I had with a Canadian economics professor I know who lives in the United States, about

some American myths about the Canadian health care system:

Myth: Taxes in Canada are extremely high, mostly because of national health care. “In actuality, taxes are nearly equal on both sides of the border. Overall, Canada’s taxes are slightly higher than those in the U.S. However, Canadians are afforded many benefits for their tax dollars, even beyond health care—tax credits, family allowance, and cheaper higher education - so the end result is a wash. At the end of the day, the average after-tax income of Canadian workers is equal to about 82 percent of their gross pay. In the U.S., that average is 81.9 percent.”

Myth: Canada’s health care system is a cumbersome bureaucracy.

“The U.S. has the most bureaucratic health care system in the world. More than 31 percent of every dollar spent on health care in the U.S. goes to paperwork, overhead, CEO salaries, profits, etc. The provincial single-payer system in Canada operates with just a 1 percent overhead. Think about it. It is not necessary to spend a huge amount of money to decide who gets care and who doesn’t when everybody is covered.”

Myth: The Canadian system is significantly more expensive than that of the U.S.

“Ten percent of Canada’s GDP is spent on health care for 100 percent of the population. The U.S. spends 16.2 percent of its GDP, but 16 percent of its population has no coverage whatsoever and millions of others have inadequate coverage. In essence, the U.S. system is considerably more expensive than Canada’s. Part of the reason for this is uninsured and underinsured people in the U.S. still get sick and eventually seek care. People who cannot afford care wait until advanced stages of an illness to see a doctor and then do so through emergency rooms, which costs

considerably more than primary care services. “What the American taxpayer may not realize is that such care costs about $45 billion per year, and someone has to pay it. This is why insurance premiums increase every year for insured patients while co-pays and deductibles also rise rapidly.” Myth: Canada’s government decides who gets health care and when they get it.

“While HMOs and other private medical insurers in the U.S. do indeed make such decisions, the only people in Canada to do so are physicians. In Canada, the government has absolutely no say in who gets care or how they get it. Medical decisions are left

entirely up to doctors, as they should be. “There are no requirements for pre-authorization whatsoever. If your family doctor says you need an MRI, you get one. In the U.S., if an insurance administrator says you are not getting an MRI, you don’t get one no matter what your doctor thinks - unless, of course, you have the money to cover the cost.”

Next week’s myths: In Canada there are long waits for care, which compromise access to care; Canadians are paying out of pocket to come to the U.S. for medical care; Canada is a socialized health care system in which the government runs hospitals and where doctors work for the government; and Canadian health care is rationed because there aren’t enough doctors in Canada.

HAIL HamiltonA Canadian Speaks: Myths about Canadian Healthcare - Part One

OPINION

As summer draws to a close, we’ve all had a chance to catch up with our elected representatives as they’ve ventured out into the hinterlands. But while we may have enjoyed seeing them and giving them a piece of our mind, I’m not

so sure that they share the sentiment. It appears that the public reaction to the “public option” being proposed by the administration has been more pronounced and certainly more negative than any of these representatives could have imagined.

People are scared, especially seniors, and while there is ample justification for that fear, there are also some fabrications, rumors and embellishments which need to be clarified. So let’s clear the air. First of all, the claim that the government will institute “death panels” is a bit over the top, if only because no politician or bureaucrat would be stupid enough to use that name. However, the concern that healthcare – and especially healthcare in the last 6 months of life – will be rationed by bureaucrats is very legitimate.

If healthcare becomes a right and is perceived as a free service, it is both common sense and one of the bedrock laws of economics that demand for that free service will increase astronomically. This means that the cost of providing this service (born by the government) will soar as well, which will inevitably lead to higher taxes to support the burden. When taxes reach the breaking point, the public will scream “enough”, and healthcare will

have to be rationed. There is no other possible outcome, and it has occurred in every other country where “free” government healthcare has been tried.

Given that healthcare costs are highest in the last 6 months of life, it is only logical that this is where the bureaucrats and politicians will focus their cost-cutting

efforts. This also has happened in other countries. When it comes to end-of-life healthcare decisions, somebody has to make the call about how much to spend – the government or the patient.

So, I pose a logical question. What would you be willing to spend to extend your life another 6 months? If you

lived in England, you wouldn’t be allowed to answer that question. The National Health Service makes that call and won’t pay more than $22,000 to extend life by 6 months. Now according to Johns Hopkins University, the cost of chemotherapy drugs alone can cost $30,000. Add in a hospital stay, and you’re way over the maximum allowed. It’s quite conceivable that the government would refuse to pay.

Facing rising costs to supply the “free” service to millions of Americans, the government is going to have to make these calls if the administration’s current plan goes forward. There will also be tremendous incentives to “coach” terminally ill patients into ending life early. Think I’m exaggerating? The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) does just that right now in their “Your Life, Your Choices” document which they give to all veterans facing such issues. Doubt me, look it up on line.

The central debate concerning healthcare reform is about control. Liberals believe that the government should control these major decisions, while Conservatives believe that the individual should control decisions concerning their own life. While polls show that the vast majority of Americans support the conservative philosophy here, there are problems which need to be addressed.

The central problem with our current healthcare system is the loss of insurance coverage when changing jobs or getting divorced. Some people transition easily from one job to another, but if you are in between and happen to get sick, new insurance is almost impossible to purchase. While I don’t deny the severity of this problem, I must point out that government rules and regulations cause the problem. If employer-provided healthcare weren’t tax subsidized at the expense of

To: Citywide

From: The City of Sierra Madre

Subject: Consideration and Adoption of Citywide Sewer System Management Plan (SSMP)

Applicant: City of Sierra Madre, 232 West Sierra Madre Boulevard, Sierra Madre, CA

The City of Sierra Madre gives notice, pursuant to State of California law, that on September 8, 2009, the City Council will consider adoption of a citywide Sewer System Management Plan (SSMP.) The California State Water Resources Control Board has adopted a Statewide General Waste Discharge Requirement and Monitoring and Reporting program through issuance of order No. 2006-003-DWQ. Adoption of an SSMP is a requirement of that order, applicable to all agencies operating sewage collection facilities of a mile long or greater. The Board Order and resulting SSMP’s are intended to improve water quality by the reduction of sewer system overflows. The SSMP establishes sewer system maintenance procedures, overflow response and reporting procedures, record-keeping procedures, legal authorities for controlling illegal connections and discharges to the sewer, sewer system design standards, and sewer system capital improvement needs. The SSMP also establishes baseline sewer system conditions through video inspection and metering/measurement of existing flow levels.

privately purchased healthcare, this problem wouldn’t exist. So here is a conservative proposal for how to “fix” healthcare.1. The tax treatment of health insurance purchases should be equal. Whether you purchase your health insurance on your own or do so by the employer paying for it (which means he has reduced your wages accordingly), it shouldn’t matter. If this change were made, most insurance would be purchased privately (and wages would increase correspondingly), and people would “own” their coverage and be able to take it with them when they change jobs or suffer a divorce.2. Eliminate all government rules which impose “minimum coverage” on insurance companies. By forcing insurance companies to cover birth control or other non-essential procedures, the price of insurance is increased for everyone. We should allow individual freedom to rule the market place. If I want birth control for my family, I’ll buy the coverage. If I don’t, I should be allowed to purchase a lower cost policy which doesn’t cover it.3. Allow people to purchase a guarantee for future health insurance. This is a great cost saving idea that is allowed in some insurance markets. The individual is allowed to pay a small amount to an insurance company which then promises to sell them a certain amount of health insurance in the future regardless of their health at that future time.4. Repeal all the anti-competitive laws which prohibit insurance companies from competing for business across state lines. This monopoly power is granted to insurance companies by the government and increases costs. Again, well intentioned regulations ended up benefiting the regulated at the expense of the consumer.

5. Allow individuals to make large contributions to tax-deductible Health Savings Accounts. When individuals have some skin in the game, they tend to be very wise with their purchases of healthcare services, and costs go down.6. Level the playing field between insurance companies and those who file lawsuits against them. Right now the burden of defense on the insurance company (because of law suit abuse) is so high that many doctors have to pay $200,000/yr. for liability coverage. Guess who really pays for that?7. Lastly, reform Medicare by making it pay fair compensation to doctors and hospitals and charge fair premiums to cover those costs for those who want to have Medicare. Medicare is broke, it just hasn’t gone bankrupt yet. It will soon, and this is exactly what will happen to our entire healthcare system if we nationalize healthcare.Healthcare is too important to allow government bureaucrats to make the key decisions. It is an issue which is critical to everyone and is at the cornerstone of what it means to have individual rights. If I can’t make my own healthcare decisions and decide what I want to spend (either in insurance premiums or medical procedures) then I really don’t have many rights after all. Conservatives believe in the common sense and freedom of the individual. Liberals believe in the wisdom and power of the government. Healthcare reform is simply the current battleground for this century old debate. Gregory J. Welborn is an independent opinion columnist. I am on a roll with these wine bars. Last week I felt like I met my first love again, as I visited Noir

Restaurant. Today I’m at POP. This is not a family restaurant (as the name may suggest) rather it is a Champagne Bar as its corks announce. I think that it’s the first true Champagne Bar in the area - am I wrong? Of course wine bars have been springing up like town hall meetings around these parts for the last few years, but I am always ready to spring upon a Champagne Bar. I may not be the ultimate Francophile, but I have to hand it to them, these beret loving people may just have something with this champagne thing. I hope it sticks around for a little while. Let me start off the review with a detective’s observation and question: the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays? What do they do with all the champagne they opened on Sunday, waste it? Maybe a touch, but I got permission to let you know an inside secret. Sunday Nights are the best night to go, I had a five flight sparkling and champagne selection for ($16). Good Gosh Ozzie and Harriet, that’s cheap, am I time traveling here? Pop Champagne and Dessert Bar has placed the wonder of a child in me again. I think they may have permanently restored hope in this creature. Now, I have only been there twice. I have visions for this place. I think this place is ready to uncork some good times for everyone. The cocktail room is spaciously open with a line of vision to the bar when you are seated in the center of the room and the middle of the action. It’s a great place

to meet friends at the bar or enjoy a table. The menu includes sparklers, Champagne and a variety of reds and whites. The list is split 50/50. Of course, to be addressed as the celebrated Champagne, the grapes must be grown from the region of France named Champagne. A thousand condescending remarks from a French companion if you missed that one. Maybe you have been going to a Sparkling Sunday Brunch all these years. More of these great places are to be found on my TV show “The Chef Knows,” so tune in as we take measures each week to assure that you don’t offend our friends from Paris. The sparkling wine and Champagne aren’t cheap, but I find the prices to be competitive here. Let’s compare a glass of Veuve Clicquot... My memory tells that a glass at Madelienes is around ($18) and at Ruth’s Chris in the range of ($23) a glass. At “Pop” It is only ($15) a glass and - get this - on Wednesday Night only ($10)!!!! Thursday Nights 33% off all bottles of wine, the owners are crazy!!! Not sure what to order? I suggest the tasting flights. Prices range from ($10) to ($19) and you can enjoy three different samples of some great Champagne, then after that you can decide on the glass you would like to order.

The World Around Us 11 Mountain Views News Saturday, August 22, 2009

I’ve never submitted a previous column before. I guess it feels like

cheating. However, I so enjoyed researching this column a few years back that I thought many of you might enjoy reminiscing a time long ago in a galaxy not so far away. Enjoy (please!) I’m going down to Yasgur’s farm, going to join in a rock and roll band with Joni MitchellThis week is the 38th (40th) anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair held August 15-18, 1969 in the State of New York. It actually should have been called the Bethel Music and Art Fair, as the closest town to the event was Bethel, not Woodstock. I suspect the organizers didn’t want it to be confused with some Lutheran event. So, instead, they called it Woodstock. And besides, Woodstock has that earthy beads and sandals sound to it. Anyway, they used Max Yasgur’s dairy farm, actually setting up shop in his alfalfa field (I wonder how many attendees tried to smoke the alfalfa stalks that week, but I guess it never caught on.). Max Yasgur’s name was immortalized in the song Woodstock, written by Joni Mitchell who, incidentally, didn’t perform there. Her managers told her appearing on the Dick Cavett Show would benefit her career more than performing in front of 500 kids in the middle of a field. (Ironically, Crosby and Stills, and Jefferson Airplane, who performed at Woodstock, were also on Dick Cavett with Joni.). Rumor has it Joni wrote the anthem while watching the 500,000 people at Woodstock on television (and sobbing for making poor choices). You probably don’t remember who-all performed at Woodstock, so let your intrepid

columnist remind you: On Friday Richie Havens opened the festival. Then Country Joe and the Fish, John Sebastian (of Loving Spoonful fame), Sweetwater, Incredible String Band (?), Bert Sommer (??), Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, and Joan Baez.Saturday opened with Quill, followed by the Keef Hartley Band, Santana, Canned Heat, Mountain, Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone, the Grateful Dead. Creedence, The Who, and Jefferson Airplane.Sunday opened with the silver throat of Joe Cocker, Country Joe and the Fish (again), Ten Years After, The Band, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Johnny Winter, and Crosby, Stills Sears and Roebuck. Sorry, I meant Nash and Young. Forgive me. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Sha Na Na, and finally the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Now, you might find it interesting who didn’t appear. Iron Butterfly got stuck at the airport. John Lennon was invited to appear IF he brought the Beatles. John said he couldn’t, but could get his Plastic Ono Band. “Pass” said the promoters. The Doors were invited but Jim Morrison didn’t like playing outdoors (I think he was a vampire). Led Zeppelin didn’t wanna be “just another band on the bill”, Jethro Tull said “No” figuring it was no big deal, as did the Moody Blues. Tommy James and the Shondells said no, because Tommy’s secretary described it as some pig farmer wanting them to come play in his field. Paul Revere and the Raiders said no, as did Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and the rock group Free. So, there you have it. Not quite as commercial as we might experience in today’s cultural climate. (Hmmmm, I wonder if Bill Clinton was there, not inhaling.)

A True August Celebration (Revisited)

Using different state-of-the-art techniques on ESO’s Very Large Telescope, two independent teams of astronomers have obtained the sharpest-ever views of the supergiant star Betelgeuse. They show that the star has a vast plume of gas almost as large as our Solar System and a gigantic bubble boiling on its surface. These discoveries provide important clues to help explain how these mammoths shed material at such a tremendous rate. Betelgeuse—the second brightest star in the constellation of Orion (the Hunter)—is a red supergiant, one of the biggest stars known, almost 1,000 times larger than our Sun. Betelgeuse is so huge that if it were at the center of our Solar System, the star’s surface would extend out almost to the orbit of Jupiter, engulfing Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and the main asteroid belt. It is also one of the most luminous stars known, emitting more light than 100,000 Suns. Such extreme properties foretell the demise of a short-lived stellar king. With an age of only a few million years, Betelgeuse is already nearing the end of its life and is soon doomed to explode as a supernova. When it does, the supernova should be seen easily from Earth, even in broad daylight. Red supergiants like Betelgeuse still hold several unsolved mysteries. One of them is just how these behemoths shed such tremendous quantities of material—about the mass of the Sun—in only 10,000 years. Two teams of astronomers have used ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) and the most advanced technologies to take a closer look at the gigantic star. The first team used the adaptive optics instrument, NACO, combined with a so-called “lucky imaging” technique, to obtain the sharpest ever image of Betelgeuse, even with Earth’s turbulent, image-distorting atmosphere in the way. With lucky imaging, only the very sharpest exposures are chosen and then combined to form an image much sharper than a single, longer exposure would be.

The resulting NACO images almost reach the theoretical limit of sharpness attainable for an 8-meter telescope. The resolution is as fine as 37 milliarcseconds, which is equivalent to seeing a tennis ball on the International Space Station from the ground. “Thanks to these outstanding images, we have detected a large plume of gas extending into space from the surface of Betelgeuse,” says Pierre Kervella from the Paris Observatory, who led the team. The plume extends to at least six times the diameter of the star, corresponding to the distance between the Sun and Neptune. To understand why Betelgeuse behaves as it does, astronomers needed to probe the behemoth in still finer detail. For this, Keiichi Ohnaka from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany, and his colleagues used a technique called interferometry, which combines light from two or more telescopes. With the AMBER instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer, which combines the light from three 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes of the VLT, the astronomers obtained observations as sharp as would be obtained from a single telescope 48 meters in diameter. With such superb resolution, the astronomers were able to detect indirectly details four times finer still than had been seen with the amazing NACO images (i.e., equivalent to seeing a marble – a marble - on the ISS from the ground). PASADENA – Pasadena Christian Center Theatre will present Mysterious Ways, a lighthearted, “T.V. sitcom-style” play by Sandy Boikian with compelling, underlying “Wows!” that will keep you on your seat’s edge until the final curtain. The play centers on two roommates ~ one who is strong in her faith, the other who is equally strong against that faith ~ and the conflict that, naturally, escalates between them. An endearing cast of supporting characters helps to bring the plot to life. “The Christian character is not an angelic, perfect ‘saint’ as some may expect,” explained playwright/director Sandy Boikian. “She has flaws, scars, heartaches, and frustrations. It’s my hope that audiences will identify with her and her struggles, and be encouraged to never give up on anyone, even if the situation appears hopeless. Nothing is impossible with God.” Reviews from the original production included: “I loved every minute of it. The dialogue, the conflict between the main characters, their growth, the dreams weaved throughout the story, the music -- the twist! All of it. Bravo!” “I identified with every character. I wasn’t watching actors on a set; I was right in that apartment with them. The conversations were not only entertaining, but real.” “The play addresses stereotypes and does away with them.” “Riveting” … “Outstanding!” … “Powerful” … “Inspirational.” Show times are September 24, 25, 26, October 1, 2, 3 at 7:30 pm, and September 27 & October 4 at 4:00 pm. Admission is $10. (Half price

for groups of 15 or more.) Tickets go on sale thirty minutes before show time. Advanced reservations are available for groups only. Please email [email protected] if you will be bringing a group. The theatre is located at 2588 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, 91107. For further details, visit www.pasadenachristian.com.

A Lowered Sense of Security

This week it was reported that a US hacker and his accomplices may have set a new world record for consumer data theft by stealing an estimated 130 million credit card numbers. It was also reported that this effort toppled a previous record set by the same man in the theft of at least 45.7 million credit card numbers from retailer TJX (parent company of TJ Maxx) between 2005 and 2007. This latest breach involved at least one major credit card payment processor and several major retail outlets. In each instance the theft was made all the more damaging due to the fact that each occurred over a long period of time and each involved sustained unauthorized access to customer financial information using a known system vulnerability. The method used by the culprits has been known in the computer security world since late 2005 and most database vendors have made security patches and code fixes available in order to thwart attacks of this nature. Very simply, these guys didn’t have to create anything new in order to pull these capers off. They just used the same tools that they had been using since 2005 and in exactly the same way. To be fair to those charged with protecting corporate networks from intrusion, the “good guys” have the 2 - 3 times the work in providing secure online services as the “bad guys” do in infiltrating those services. The “good guys” are tasked with making access to their products and services as available as possible while at the same time ensuring that the payment process is accurate, accessible and secure. The “bad guys” only have to somehow insert themselves into this process and get out with the data they’re after, undetected if possible. In typical cat-and-mouse fashion, one side has the advantage of acting while the other has the burden of reacting and counteracting. Not so very long ago the most valuable thing any company had was its good reputation and usually this reputation included all phases of customer service as well as the quality of the merchandise and\or services offered to the public. A company that suffered damage to its reputation could literally count the days before it closed to the public. These days the buying and consuming public has become far more forgiving of things that would have doomed a

business concern not so long ago. We seem to have become numb to the seemingly endless stream of news about break-ins such as these. Possibly the speed and volume of today’s business world have numbed us into inaction through intimidation at the thought of the big ‘Them’ and the little ‘us’ but at this point in the game it has been well established that if we as consumers don’t stand up for ourselves, no one else will. This is one area of the law that has yet to catch up to the present in order to give consumers redress in cases of customer data loss. Since the vulnerabilities that allowed these breaches to occur in the first place had been repaired by the major database vendors but have been failed to be properly implemented in case after case, it is time that more drastic measures be taken to put an end to this sorry state of affairs. The Enron scandal was pivotal in bringing about major reforms in the way that publicly-traded companies were allowed to manage their books and report their earnings and debts to the public. This system has put an end to some of the more outrageous financial schemes that were running wild around the same time and forced several major business concerns to come clean about some of the more creative accounting tricks that had been used to make their companies appear more profitable than they actually were. Although this system has yet to produce 100% accountabilit,y it has been a step in the right direction. Similarly, the major financial data clearinghouses and credit card processors could be held to a codified standard of security policy, set and monitored by an impartial third-party or government agency, and enforced by the FTC to ensure that positive action has been taken to avoid more incidents like the ones described earlier. Most, if not all, security breaches occur as a direct result of existing systems not being updated and monitored properly. This remains true whether the computer system in question is a single desktop or the huge mainframes that run the financial enterprises in question. In these cases, pro-activity is the best policy and since some business elements appear not to be taking these matters seriously, it just might time for us to do something about it.

As we’ve seen in recent months, emergencies ranging from health epidemics, like the H1N1 Flu, to extreme weather, like Hurricane Bill, can hit at a moment’s notice. September is the sixth annual National Preparedness Month (NPM) which is the perfect time to remind your readers about the importance of having an emergency preparedness plan for their families, businesses, and communities. FEMA’s Ready Campaign is asking Americans to think about how prepared they are for anything from thunderstorms to terrorist attacks. With support from coalition members across the nation, which include a wide range of state and local governments, businesses, and organizations, NPM is held each September to increase public awareness about emergency preparedness. This year, the Ready Campaign is helping Americans understand that preparedness goes beyond fire alarms, smoke detectors, dead-bolt locks and extra food in the pantry to change perceptions about emergency preparedness and help Americans understand what it truly means to be “Ready.”

A study released this summer by Citizen Corps, FEMA’s emergency preparedness and resiliency grassroots strategy, found that Americans are not as prepared as they think. Fewer than half of individuals (42%) had an emergency plan for their home. Additionally, individuals’ low level of familiarity with critical local information such as the community alerts and warning systems (45%), shelter locations (31%), and community evacuation routes (26%) indicate that these essential elements are missing or incomplete from household planning efforts. The Ready Campaign Web site, www.ready.gov, can be an invaluable resource to help your readers prepare by taking these simple steps: Get a Kit; Make a Plan; Be Informed; and Get Involved in community efforts such as Citizen Corps. Ready’s Web site features downloadable emergency supply checklists and family emergency plan templates, as well as new online emergency planning tools. Individuals can also call 1-800-BE-READY for more information or follow the Ready Campaign on Twitter under the username readydotgov.

The Good Life Mountain Views News Saturday, August 22, 2009 12

TO BE AN “ELDER” For ninety-nine percent of human history,

life expectancy was only 18 years. In the last few centuries it raised to about 35 years. In only the last 100 years this has increased to the current 77 years old!

To quote Emma Benignus, a professor and counselor, “The reason God has engineered the spectacular increase in life expectancy in the last 100 years is that because the world is so desper-ately in need of wisdom that God created elders.”

I believe there is a difference between being “elderly” and being an “elder”. To me an elder is one who can convey the wisdom of a fully lived life to the younger generations who struggle with the decisions and dilemmas of life. As seniors, we have this ability. The process of aging, call it learning or having life teach us, does impart cer-tain wisdom. This experience, albeit by trial and error, needs to be shared with those we care about. This includes our values as well as those lessons we have learned the hard way.

The question is, “are we involved with the lives of our younger family members so that we can impart this?” Are we smart enough to do this without imposing or telling them what to do? Perhaps the asking of leading questions can avoid the sense of imposing. Being a good listener and hearing what is really being said can bring about an appropriate and helpful word of encourage-ment or a spot of needed advice.

Those younger than us are desperate for guid-

ance. Think back on the days when we underwent those same struggles of career, family, morality, and all of those complex issues. Think how you felt as you struggled with them. If we are honest, we often didn’t know what to do. We made deci-sions, both good and bad. We learned. This is what we need to share with those we care about. These lessons are desperately needed. Perhaps this is our role as an “elder”.

We must ask ourselves if we are now beyond the “me” part of life and concentrating on helping others. Most of us have learned that there is little satisfaction in catering to only our own desires. The real rewards come when you help another, ei-ther physically or with that thing we call wisdom.

It is said that “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. Is this the legacy we want for our family? Use that life of learning, failing, pain, joy, loving, as a tool to help those who really need it. We have such an advantage. Why not share it? Let’s loose the “ly” from the word “elderly” and be an elder to those we care about.

Some say that horse racing is “The Sport of Kings,” but we in the lawn bowling community feel that our sport is the real Sport of Kings. Lawn bowling was established in England long before 1299, when theSouthampton Old Bowling Green Club was orga-nized. This green has been in continuous opera-tion since 1299, and is still played upon. That is over 710 years of use. In the time of King Edward III, the game was re-stricted, by royal decree, to “Noblemen and oth-ers having manors and land.” Other kings enjoyed the game also. King Henry VIII, King Charles I, King James I, and according to bowling legend King James I lost over $5,000, in one game with a merchant from Barking Hill. Ann Boleyn, Princess Elizabeth (the first one), and Queen Victoria were bowlers, as was Queen Mary, and King Edward V. King Edward VIII (The Duke of Windsor) was the president of The Royal Household Bowling Club of Windsor Cas-tle. His brother, King George VI, was an enthusi-astic bowler and patron of the English Bowling Association. British officers installed bowling greens in the American Colonies. The first bowling greens were recorded in Boston in 1615. At Jamestown they bowled in the streets, which must have been fun with the wagon tracks, ruts and road apples. Sometime before 1716, a green was built at Williamsburg, Virginia. The sport was played at many taverns and estates, and was listed with other sports in antigambling legisla-ture by the General Assembly in 1728 and again in 1779. George Washington¹s father installed a bowling green at Mt. Vernon in 1732, the year George was born. After the Revolutionary War, the sport nearly died out in the colonies because of the anti-British feelings by the colonist. Even-tually, the sport has regained its popularity, but it is still not as popular as it should be. But, at the Bowling Green at Williamsburg, games are still being played today. Other notables have played the sport. Just a few are: Dr. Samuel Johnson, Dr. William Brady, Shakespeare, and Walt Disney. Mr. Disney said: “There is a certain camarade-rie among lawn bowlers not found in any other sport. Good sportsmanship is always present.Millions of Americans, not just a few thousand, should be playing the game, for once a person be-comes a member of a club and gets on the green, he will find that his future will be filled with un-told pleasures and many added years.”In the book, “The American Lawn Bowler’s Guide: by Dr. Harvey C.Maxwell, M.C., F.A.C.S.,” the Doctor says: “Lawn bowling presents the perfect substitute exercise. Properly played, there is little physical strain, and yet offers an intensely interesting competitive

game that will appeal to and hold the former ath-lete and the man who has always enjoyed athletic sports, but should slow down.” In the Los Angeles area, there are many lawn bowling clubs. You can find bowls being played in Alhambra, Pasadena, Arcadia, Beverly Hills,Hermosa Beach, and Santa Monica. In the gen-eral Southern California area, bowling greens can be found at Hemet, Pomona, Riverside, Sun City, Laguna Beach, Long Beach, Newport Harbor, Santa Ana, Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, Irvine, Santa Barbara, and several other sites beyond. You may be able to find a bowling green through the Parks and Recreation Department in your area. Most of these clubs offer free lessons to any-one interested in learning this ancient and “Roy-al” sport. They will furnish all of the equipment and the instructor. There are just over 100 lawn bowling clubs in the United States. California has over half of the greens and bowlers, too. South-ern California places more men and women on the national and international teams than any other area in the United States. The game can be learned in a very short time, but will take many, many years to master. It¹s a chal-lenging sport, and it is a sport that can last you a lifetime. A normal bowling green is a flat, level and grass covered. It should be about 120 feet square. The green is usually divided into 8 “rinks,” or, in alley bowling terms, “8 alleys.” They vary from 14 to 16 feet wide. Being square the lawn bowlers can bowl, say, north and south one day and east and west the next. This helps keep the greens from be-coming too worn in one direction.Lawn bowling is an excellent sport for boys and girls in their early teens. For those of us that are a little older and have to slow down our physi-cal activity due to age, or injury, it is a sport of low impact, light exercise and it’s more mental than physical. Cardiologists endorse it because of the cardiovascular aspect of the sport. The arm swings, when you deliver three-pound bowl three or four times per end (an end is when all the bowlers roll their bowls to the other end of the green). You have to pick up the bowls, so bending and pumping of the blood through those tired ar-teries and veins can help to slow down the hard-ening of arteries. Who’s Calling? Beware of Telephone ScamsIt’s sometimes hard to tell if a sales pitch is legitimate or fraudulent. You can’t judge it by the tone of someone’s voice, or how friendly or sincere the person seems. Good salespeople are convincing, and so are crooks. But it’s probably a scam if: You get a call or postcard from someone telling you you’ve won a prize and asking for payment to buy something, for processing or administrative fees, for customs, for taxes, or any other reason. The person says you have to take the offer immediately or you’ll miss the opportunity. The caller claims that you can make huge profits in an investment with no risk. The caller is asking for a donation but won’t tell you exactly how the money will be used and how you can verify the charity and what it does. They ask for cash. The caller asks for your social security number, credit card number, bank account number, or other financial information. The company calls you relentlessly or after you’ve asked not to be called anymore. Con artists will keep on calling to wear you down or get more money from you. Remember, giving money to a fraudulent telemarketer usually means losing it forever. Don’t let a criminal break into your home through your telephone line!

For Your Funny Bone A customer was bothering the waiter in a restaurant. First, he asked that the air conditioning be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned down cause he was too cold, and so on for about half an hour. Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, he walked back and forth and never once got angry. So finally, a second customer asked him why he didn’t throw out the pest. “Oh, I really don’t care or mind,” said the waiter with a smile. “We don’t even have an air conditioner.”

The owners of In-terior Devine and Le-onora Moss have spent

the last decade admiring each other’s work. At charity events and showcase homes and in private client installations. In the trenches as showcase vendors, they quickly learned they could depend on each other for the little and big things that ease the burden and the burnout of a month of 18 hour days selling their wares to tour attendees.

After earning their stripes, Paul Devine of Interior Devine and Lorie Westmoreland of the mother-daughter team at Leonora Moss, eventu-ally moved up the design food chain to design interiors for the showcase homes. They work to-gether regularly now. Devine’s vintage botanicals, framed in his Pasadena store, and other unique floral-related items are offered at the Leonora Moss store in Sierra Madre.

He often taps her expertise to provide the fin-ishing touches for his interior designs. Though they by no means work together exclusively, each feels the other speaks enough of the other’s specialty language. Devine and Westmoreland’s philosophical and design viewpoints provide a synergy to each other’s work.

Of all the designers’ work at a 2008 ASID event at Descanso Gardens, I found myself drawn to Devine’s work at the Boddy House, the original estate on the garden property. Devine is a man who beams from a source within; a man who knows how to put anyone at ease, yet delivers his message and philosophy intact.

I knew Leonora Moss’s work by reputation and her distinctive work first, meeting Westmoreland just this year after three years’ residence in town. In my first year in town, two floral gifts arrived af-ter a surgery, and local visitors did a knowing lit-tle “ooh and ah” at her signature floral creations.

More and more, both are drawn to arrange-ments that transcend season. A beautiful front door wreath doesn’t necessarily have to go to the garage for the Christmas season. Rather, the two design year round wreaths and arrangements to take on the holiday spirit with the insertion of seasonal accents.

Both feel that floral arrangements are a criti-cal accessory to complete an interior design. Yet gone are the days of silk flowers, in favor of live or dried arrangements, many of which are displayed at Leonora Moss. Most households don’t refresh

flowers throughout the home weekly, so the use of succulents provides a long lasting and colorful alternative.

Though most of us have come to appreciate succulents for their water thrifty nature in the outdoors, rarely do we consider them for a home’s interior. The duo’s use of succulents as a basis for this type of arrangement has many benefits.

They are living plants that survive very nicely with minimal care. Their fleshy leaves hoard wa-ter, and can go long periods without a douse. Just about any piece that breaks off can be rooted into a new plant, too. Succulents can survive well in low light of a home’s interior, though in some, color may not fire up without strong sunlight.

For instance, a Euphorbia Tirucalli, commonly known as Firestick, will remain in the green to yellow without strong sunlight, but will still pro-vide a dramatic presence, with its pencil thin in-tricate branching, as an anchor or accent plant. The soft green hue of an agave can stand alone as a single specimen in a pot, or part of an arrange-ment.

Succulents are available in a wide variety of hues and textures to suit just about any color pal-ette or decorating style. The silver blue of “Senec-cio blue” brings light and contrast to its sur-roundings. A trailing accent can be attained with “Donkey Tail” sedum. Touches of pink to red can be garnered from the random-looking flapjack stacking of Kalanchoe Thrysfolia.

The Haworthia Fasciata can complement your best black and white design intentions with its zebra like markings. A true character plant, the Echeveria Gibbiflora v. Mauna Loa offers a loose cabbage appearance with crinkled and warty pro-trusions, that’s been likened to an eruption of Mauna Loa volcano.

So if you’re considering long lasting floral ar-rangements for your home, a full home redesign or just want two fun stores to browse, touch base with these two!

Smokey Bear has been an American Icon for over 65 years. He has helped educate Americans on the importance of preventing forest fires since the 1940’s. In commemoration of the many faces of Smokey are images of posters that we have viewed over the years. The message is the same. It is up to us (humans) to prevent forest fires. Remember: Charcoal briquettes and ash from grills/fireplaces can start wildfires. When disposing of briquettes and ash outside, drown the charcoal and ash with lots of water; stir them, and soak again. Be sure they are out cold! Sparks from lawnmowers and power equipment DO start wildfires. Be careful on hot, dry days, and be sure to

get your equipment checked regularly. Smokers, safe practices require at least a 3-foot clearing around you. Grind out your cigarette, cigar, or pipe tobacco in the dirt. Never grind it on a stump or log. Never throw it away into the brush or leaves. It is unsafe to smoke while walking or riding a horse or trail bike because you never know where the ash will land. Use your ashtray while in your car. Creating a 30 foot zone of fire-resistant space around your home will help prevent fires from starting near or spreading to your home. In addition, Use fire resistant plants and landscaping. For more tips on how to better protect your home visit http://www.firewise.org.
