Published monthly and distributed FREE of charge to residents of Levack, Onaping, Dowling and Windy Lake.
Falls Food FALLS FOOD is the new name for the former Onaping Falls & Cartier Food Bank. Thanks to the wonderful response of the community, Falls Food has transitioned from the former location at St. Bartholomew's Church to a new home at the Onaping Community Centre on Hillside Avenue in Onaping. Falls Food negotiated with the City of Greater Sudbury and were offered Suite F in the community centre as a welcoming community space. Falls Food encourages all volunteers, old and new, to visit us at the new space. The operating hours are the LAST 2 Wednesdays of the month from 4 PM to 7 PM. This time co-ordinates with Trans Cab access as well as a time when the Library and the New 2 U outlet are operating. The Board of Directors is made up of citizens from Dowling, Levack and Onaping with hopes to include a Cartier resident on the board in the near future. Amy Henson and Martha Cunningham Closs are serving as co-chairs. Amy is also Treasurer. Sharon Leblanc has taken on the role of Secretary. Also on the board are Aila Kelemen, Grace Sarazin, Cathy Taylor and Don Henwood. Board meetings are always open to the public with community input and ideas always welcome. The Board is hoping that all the organizations which helped keep the food bank running smoothly over the years will continue to contribute their energies to FALLS FOOD at the new location. All current depot locations for collecting Food will continue to be asked to provide that service to the community. We are currently confirming participation in the food collection and delivery efforts.
Falls Food will be providing each guest with a “Menu Sheet” from which to choose food items. Each guest will fill out the sheet and then a volunteer will fill the order. In order to provide statistics to the Food Bank Network, guests will be asked to fill out a form to ensure they are from Onaping Falls or Cartier and to determine the number of people in their household being served. Photo ID will be required at the time of intake. Falls Food is also in the process of creating a Volunteer Bank, so those who would like to volunteer some time or a specific skill can be connected to an organization which needs you. If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, you can drop into Falls Food in person or you can contact them by email at [email protected] or call Martha at 705-966-2076. To keep up with the Falls Food news, please like their Facebook page and check out their spot in ORACLE online at www.onleoracle.ca. Many thanks to St. Bartholomew’s and Father Bob for their hard work over the many years the food bank was housed there. Thanks to the volunteers who continue to offer up their time and ideas for the food bank at the new location.
Breaking News!
We have been informed by the City that a “Full Building Permit” has been
issued and picked up for the 7-unit townhouse development! While we
don’t know a specific start date for completion of the project nor do we
know the fate of the rest of the site, everyone hopes that this will happen
sooner rather than later.

3D Printing Workshop
On July 19, Brian Harding (Emerging Technologies
Librarian at the Main Branch of the Library) presented a
workshop on 3D Printing at the
Onaping Community Centre. We
only had an audience of 6 but it was
extremely interesting and fascinating. Brian went through
the background of 3D printing and explained the process
through slides and a hands-on demonstration. The
younger members of the audience were keen to design
their own 3D object and proceeded to easily manipulate the software and
produced an actual 3D rendering of their design.
These young men have now earned the privilege of
visiting the Main Branch (on McKenzie Street in
Sudbury) and booking time on the same 3D printer
and creating their choice of objects! If you would like
to know more and see the pre-made designs you can
3D print, visit http://www.thingiverse.com/

The Story of Onaping Falls
Robert P. Trott
Chapter 27
In February 1978, Germaine Gorham was officially presented the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal at one of her favourite projects, the Dowling Winter Carnival. A proud moment for a very humble lady who has devoted her life to helping others. The consensus of the residents of the Municipality of Onaping Falls is that out of all the municipalities in the Sudbury Region, this area contains the most and the best indoor and outdoor recreational and cultural facilities and opportunities compared to any other area of comparative size. Because Onaping Falls is on the outskirts of this block called the Region, most outdoor recreational pleasures are at their doorstep. Any one of the dozens of clear freshwater lakes and rivers and streams beckons the outdoorsman where good clean fresh air and a multi changing scenery is there to appreciate and enjoy. For the family who fancy a hike with the dog, the trails and unexplored areas are endless. The overnight campers too, have al l around them an unlimited choice of forest, streams or lakeshore sites. If canoeing is the interest, the placid waters of some of this area’s smaller lakes is ideal. Sneaking up on the busy antic of the local wildlife is always and awe inspiring experience. To satisfy the hunter and fisherman, the challenge is right here. Hundreds of square miles of water and bush with tote roads and used and disused logging trails to reconnoitre. Summer or winter our outdoors is ever changing. Whether young or old the list of activities available is long and varied. In the summer there is swimming, boating, sailing, camping, water skiing or just quietly soaking up the view and the sun. In winter the choice is skiing, cross country or ski club, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skating and ice fishing for the hardy. Just a few of the many ways to get some exercise and enjoy well earned free time. Within each town the organized recreational and leisure time activities available to all is wide and varied: tennis, volleyball, squash, art and other cultural pastimes. Baseball, indoor and outdoor horseshoe courts, basketball, good libraries, covered or open ice skating, Service and Community Clubs, extension courses in our local schools, curling, skiing, and a few minutes drive even presents a nine hole golf course and Canoe Club. Churches too are convenient and their many programs a pleasure to attend. The list of projects to be involved in and the tremendous range of family and individual pastimes in this municipality is almost unlimited. The Municipality of Onaping Falls has been quite rightly called the playground of the Sudbury Region. For many, the short drive on good roads to get out of the noisy crowded city is well worth the inconvenience for the advantages of the tranquil, pleasant life that lies within and beyond our borders. The Mining Industry of the breath of life for this area but lying dormant is the immense potential of the need to build on the abundant resources. There is no need for gaudy signs, flashing lights or false fronts to attract new comers. Nature paints a difference picture everyday of the year, nothing more is needed to attract the tourist, hobby farmer or average worker or retiree who is looking for the normal services and well balanced social environment expected in todays world.
