STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS

On September 1, 2013, we will start ourSTEWARDSHIP Campaign for next year. Our Theme

for the Campaign is “GRACE, GRATITUDE & GENEROSITY----SAYING THANK YOU TO GOD.”

We are continually overwhelmed again and again at the graceof God, which has created us, saved us, and daily offers us forgivenessand strength to be stewards who please him. It is important tounderstand that the more we express our gratitude to God for ourblessings, the more he will bring to our lives. The more we are aware ofand are grateful for, the happier we become. No man was everhonored for what he received. Honor is the reward for what he gave.

A quote from William A. Ward to think about each day: “Godgave you a gift of 86,400 SECONDS today ----have you used one tosay THANK YOU?

HCC FOOD PANTRY

Hillside has served those in need in our

community in a compassionate and caring way since1999. The number of families seeking help due to losingtheir job, increases in the cost of living, and other hardships hasincreased dramatically. In April, the Pantry served 80 families, and inMay, they served 98 families. The number of those needing help hasalmost doubled since last year. Unfortunately, this level ofcommitment does not come without a price.

We need your help and support. To continue providing thisservice we need to recognize the cost of food is on the rise and theamount of food we need is increasing too. Any gift you can give to theFood Pantry is greatly appreciated. It costs about $15 per sack.

Donations can be made through the Church to the FoodPantry fund or we will gladly take food to fill the sacks. Currently in thesacks are: cereal, macaroni & cheese, hamburger helper, cannedveggies, fruit, tuna, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jelly, canned or dried beans, ramen noodles, 1 roll of toilet paper, and a barof soap.

Our Food Pantry is an important part of our ChurchOutreach Ministry and provides a vital source of hope and help tothose in need. Hours of Operation are every Thursday from 9 AM to11 AM.

Happy Volunteers are always Welcome!

FAITHLIFE CONNECTIONS @ HILLSIDE CHRISTIAN

SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 2013

9 AM ~ 3 PM

This second lecture, will be presented by Dr. JoeBessler. In our day together we’ll explore the

intersection of religion and politics by noticing how major politicalspeeches such as Convention Addresses are structured in ways thatoverlap with the structure and topics of Christian faith and theology. Inaddition to noticing that overlapping structure, we’ll consider severalexplanations for why that overlap exists, what we in the church mightlearn from the practice of political discourse, and why we in the churchshould be concerned about that overlapping tendency. By exploringthese overlapping connections and tensions between the religious andthe political, lay leaders will see better the importance of distinguishingour religious convictions from our political commitments. If timeallows, we can also explore how the relation between “religion andpolitics” is quite different than the relation between “church and state.”

Dr. Joe Bessler, Robert Travis Peake Professor ofTheology: B.S., Northwestern University; M.A., Harvard University;Ph.D., University of Chicago. Dr. Bessler has broad teaching andresearch interests in both historical studies of Christian thought andcontemporary methods of theological analysis and construction. Among his publications are “The Theological Risks of Taking JesusSeriously,” Forum (Fall 2001), “Truth as Empire: A ProblematicMetaphor in Christian Theology,” Encounter (Spring 2004), and Lawand Theology: Cases and Readings, co-edited with Martin Belsky ofthe University of Tulsa Law School from Carolina Academic Press.

The program will begin at 9 AM with Dr. Bessler’spresentation followed by a local panel that will respond and shareperspectives that will include conversations from the attendees. Afterlunch together, a training session will be held for those interested inteaching or leading study groups including offering recommendationson materials and resources, the program will conclude at 3 PM. Theprogram is intended to be ecumenically and multi-faith oriented.
