Meet Hannah Montana’s Movie Horse at Quarterfest America’s Horse, April 16, 2009 – It’s the best of both worlds! AQHA’s QuarterFest offers lots of horsey fun and learning oppor-tunities, as well as a chance to rub elbows with celebrities. The latest movie star to sign on is American Quarter Horse Blue Steel Man, who is Miley Cyrus’ horse in “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” now in theaters. In the movie – as well as in the popular TV series – Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus) has a double life as a normal teen by day, teen pop star Hannah Montana by night. But when she lets Hannah’s soaring popularity start taking over her life, her father, Robby Ray (played by real-life dad Billy Ray Cyrus), steps in to deliver a dose of reality. He takes Miley back to Crowley Corners, Tennessee, where she discovers a more grounded existence – and where she meets Blue Steel Man, known as “Blue Jeans” in the movie. The movie was fi lmed mostly in and around Nashville, just about 20 miles from where Blue Steel Man lives with his owner Bobby Brooks of Franklin, Tennessee. Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where QuarterFest will be held May 1-3, is just 30 miles from Nashville. Brooks’ horse got his chance at fame when he encountered some movie scouts at a United States Team Roping Championship event in Franklin. Blue Steel Man competes in both heading and heeling. “My horse was just what they were looking for,” said Brooks, who raised and trained the 11-year-old gelding himself and was pleased when movie wranglers complimented the horse’s training and level-headedness. “I’m very proud of him.” Meeting this American Quarter Horse wasn’t exactly a new experi-ence for Miley. Horses have helped keep the Cyrus family grounded for a long time. When Billy Ray was at the height of his fame – and when Miley was just a toddler – his father took the two of them horseback riding through the hills of Kentucky. Billy Ray told the Los Angeles Times that Miley reminds him of what her grandfather said that day: “Pappy said, always be aware of where you’re at, always know where you’re going, but most importantly never forget where you come from.” AQHA’s fi rst-ever equine expo is a festival of learning, with clinics on a variety of topics – everything from ranch roping to camping with your horse – as well as entertainment and shopping. Another celebrity appearance will be made by Keepin Charge, an American Quarter Horse who starred in “Appaloosa.” Keepin Charge is the son of Docs Keepin Time, who was featured in the movie “Black Beauty.” Visit www.aqha.com/quarterfest to learn more about our inaugural expo. Visit disney.go.com/disneypictures/hannahmontanamovie/ to see more photos of Miley with Blue Steel Man.

Over the fi rst part of the 2009 Pro Rodeo season you may have noticed the name Sheena Robbins (Fresno, CA) climbing up the WPRA NFR barrel racing standings. In fact, currently she sits in 4th place, after a big win at Houston and a great start to the year. The Barrel Racing Report caught up with her for a few quick questions.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your rodeo career up to this point. Robbins: I grew up riding horses. My Dad trains cutting horses and my Mom used to run barrels. I showed cutting mostly but I competed in junior rodeo, then high school rodeo, and then I college rodeoed! I train barrel horses and usually sell them before or during there futurity year! Shorty is the only one I’ve kept! My mom keeps telling me to keep another one for a back up horse. She might get her way, Reinhopper is a lot like Shorty only easier going! I’ve made the California Circuit Finals the last three years! I’ve had some success rodeoing. A few of the bigger rodeos that I’ve won are Red Lodge, MT, Santa Maria, CA, and Ellensburg, WA. I was very excited to win Ellensburg! I rodeo as much as I can with my boyfriend (Cade Swor), but this summer I am going to go with Alicia Sandvol from New Mexico and my little dog Ace goes every where too!

Q: Tell us about your horse Bar D Mr Dual Olena. Robbins: My horses barn name is Shorty even though he isn’t that short any more! He is an 8 year old gelding. I’ve owned him since he was 3. I got him because he kept bucking everyone off. I don’t know what I was thinking then, but I am so glad I did now! He is still a little bit of a bronc but he has really grown up in the last year!!

Q: What was it like to be the runner-up in Houston? Robbins: Houston was Awesome! It’s a great rodeo and I feel so blessed to have won second! I am very proud of my horse, that was the most runs I’ve made on him in a row! 7 runs! My horse

got a little fast going to the fi rst barrel as the week went on but it worked out! Before the fi nal day I had $8,000 won! It took a little of the pressure off ! You don’t go very many places where 2nd pays 20 thousand! My boyfriend made the fi nals and the top four in calf roping, so we were so excited that we had a chance to win 100k! He had some bad luck in the Shootout but we still had a great week!

Q: What other horses do you use and what young horse do you have on their way up? Robbins: I love competing but training colts is the fun part. Watching them progress is amazing! I even have Cade riding colts now! I have 2 - three year olds (Reinhopper and Duallys Little Pistol) and 3 - four year olds right now (DSR Tuck Me In, Moon-shine Lena, and Merada Sugar). Both of my 3 year olds are out of Dual Pep mares just like Shorty so we are really excited about them! I have 4 year old fi lly named DSR Tuck Me In who we bought for Cade to rope on but I am loving her to run barrels on! She is by a stud (Cool Smart) that I showed at the National High School Finals cutting in 2000.

BARREL RACING REPORT APRIL 21 2009 PAGE 16

This is the 6th in a series of articles about the intelligence, heart and healing capacities of the horses we live with, work with and love. Now that a long winter is over in Western Montana, I am able to spend much more time in the pasture with our horses. Time out there as an observer teaches me about the horses’ personalities, their herd behavior, their habits, and it allows me to communicate and strengthen bonds. Out in the pasture I learn the most about the personalities and attitudes of the new foals, I see which mares just aren’t compatible with each other, and I notice subtle changes or small problems that if not taken care of could become problems. Out in the pasture I have learned immense lessons about what makes each of our horses tick. A good friend in Jennings, Louisiana, who raises a few nice race bred foals each year told me of what he learned by watching his mares in this pasture just this past weekend. Greg Lessigne said, “When Diamond had her fi lly, I noticed that my only ‘dry’ mare in the pasture, Dimes For Kate, was acting very aggressive. I later realized by watching her she was not being aggres-sive at all. She is a dominant spirit for sure, but she was being very protective of the mare and new foal. “It was very interesting to watch her move Diamond and her new baby about the pasture and cut the other mares and babies off from them. I noticed that when she would stop and turn towards the other mares she would drop her head and swing it back and forth and up and down as if speaking a private language to them and they would back off and stay at bay. If they would attempt to approach again, she would then turn her butt to them and back quickly in their direction as if to say this is your second warning.... on the their third attempt she lunged at them with teeth bared and ran them off. That seemed to work.

“It is amazing how they speak to one another without ever saying a word.” A casual observer, just glancing at the situation, would have thought there was a “bitchy” mare in the pasture. The careful ob-server saw an intelligent, protective mare, looking out for another mare with a new baby. He saw compassion, communication and order. Another friend, Carrie Bale, of Allegan, Michigan, says “Having spent hundreds of hours in the pasture and yard with my horse, I have a deep connection with my orphan fi lly, now almost three years old. I have learned to decipher her anxious/worried whinny from her ‘hey you/hello’ whinny. This helped me identify trouble a couple of times. Once, a fence was ripped down between two pastures and another horse she was not used to got in with her. She was very upset. I went to see why she had that worried whinny going and discovered misplaced horses! Another time, when doing a nightly barn check, she gave me that worried whinny, so I went to her stall and she was sweaty and hot - colic! We ended up taking her to Michigan State University that night. “I have learned to read my horse’s expression. When she has a soft/sleepy eye she is happy and content. I have learned to appreci-ate the smell of my horse and the peace that surrounds her, when it is so quiet I can hear the blink of her eyelashes. “I have also learned that when my horse refuses to do something it is not always an obstinacy, sometimes she is giving me a message. Maybe something doesn’t feel right to her, maybe she is hurting.“I know my horse appreciates a soft brush compared to a stiff one. She will let me know when she wants her backside scratched. “My horse and I are connected in a way that few people and

horses are.” I don’t have a pair of jeans without grass or mud-stained knees from kneeling down and stroking new foals. My shirts have colt, mare and stallion slobbers on them at the end of everyday. My fi ngernails get so dirty from scratching little and big horse butts.I can tell you how each of our mares will react in almost any situ-ation, how to approach her if she is nervous or upset, where her favorite place to be scratched is, who her best friends are, where she fi ts in the pecking order. I am already learning how each of our 2009 foals looks at the world. I am seeing personality traits and strengths that will be with them their entire lives. “Time spent out in the pasture teaches you things you can never learn from a textbook,” my friend Lisa McMahan says. “It is an invaluable, lifelong lesson.” Another friend, Wendy Malone says that the hours she’s in the pasture with her foals teaches her “which will be strong and confi -

dent foals to grow up and become real competitors in certain train-ing disciplines because of their independence and what they like to do with their free time.” Time in the pasture will allow us to discern problems by slight changes in looks or demeanors. Time in the pasture builds confi -dence and enhances communication between horses and owners. It gives us a good observation of horse movement and conformation. Time in the pasture is good for the soul. When the chores are done (and often when they aren’t), you can fi nd me out in the pasture talking to and listening to our horses.----- Teri W. Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home By Sherry MorrisonBy Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

A few days ago, the Lord gave me a word and at fi rst, I thought it was for a friend and for us. But while in Montana, He told me to share it with “all you all”! (-:

On a daily basis we are bombarded with news that we are going down fi nancially...the country, the state, the city and last but not least, you and I. That’s garbage. Read Luke 5:1-9. These fi sher-men had fi shed all night and hadn’t caught a thing. BUT JESUS SHOWED UP and told Simon to cast out his net for a catch. Reluctantly (or, in today’s slang “Whatever!”) he did. There were so many fi sh in that net he had to call his partners, friends, cohorts or even the competition to help him! So here’s God word to you...REMEMBER THE FISH!!! We are going to hear from God in our businesses, our ranches, our homes, wherever we work and HE will help us! Have you ever thought about what fi sh in its’ right mind would ever tell God no? Well, what about if God were to move on people to some and shop with

you, or go to the livestock sale that day to buy YOUR cows! It is sooooo important that we hear God and do what He says. It might not be the day you would pick to haul cows to a sale, or add a new line of clothes to your store (not in this economy!!!) but God told YOU to. Do you do it the way you always have (fi shed at night) or do you OBEY at HIS WORD! You pick. But as for me, maybe even reluctantly, I’m purposing to DO WHAT GOD TELLS ME, even if it has never worked that way before. I’m going to remember the fi sh/sales/blessing because if God has to have angels shoo those fi sh/buyers in my/your nets we’ll be ready!!! And the world can lump it!!
