Volume 27 March 25, 2015 Community Last night Fr. Vince and Bishop Michael Barber held a Q & A reception to share the mission for Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together campaign and the Bishop’s vision for our Diocese. The evening began with a movie telling the story of our Diocese and the eorts necessary to move forward as a Diocese. The emphasis of support identified in our campaign is to provide for our parishes, our schools, individuals who are in most need through the services of Catholic Charities of the East Bay, faith formation and religious education programs, our retired priests, diocesan annual ministry, and financial health. Bishop Barber invited all of us as members of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Oakland to bring our gifts and to add them together. He was honest, gentle, and clear in his speaking while sharing openly his discoveries as well as the history of this mission as he embraced his appointment to the Diocese of Oakland twenty-one months ago by Pope Francis. Bishop Barber and Fr. Vince reminded us that we are good stewards and asked that we reflect on the abundant gifts from God. And, in so doing, please: 1. PRAY for the success of the campaign 2. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. Amen

• In old England, 10 famil ies equaled a tithing. 10 tithings equaled a shire. Each shire elected a reeve. That "shire reeve" came to be known as a “sheriff.”

• "To break bread" once was a literal term. Bread of England 700 years ago was so lightly leavened it couldn't be sliced but had to be broken.

We Need Your Help with Our Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together Campaign!

As many of you already know, the faithful of the Diocese are being invited to join Bishop Barber in the Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together campaign. The funds raised in this first-ever diocesan wide campaign will generate the financial means needed to further our mission throughout the East Bay and secure a solid financial foundation for our future. Through this effort, we can renew, strengthen, sustain and expand ministries to those who are most in need, building a foundation for a continued vibrancy in the local Church for generations to come. Our Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together campaign will be a key first step in our collective response to meet our Diocesan needs.

Fr. Vince and Mr. Petersen ask that all families in Church of the Assumption Parish and Assumption School consider volunteering their time and talents to our Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together campaign. With a project as important as this one, we need your help spreading the good news of our campaign to our entire Assumption family. We are asking for your help in particular with making phone calls to remind people of upcoming receptions and to follow up with those who have not been able to make a reception. Rest assured – these are not phone calls asking people to pledge money! There is a friendly script provided by the Diocese for these phone calls. In addition, Mr. Petersen has offered to make these volunteer hours eligible for parent service hours! If you are interested, please fill out the form below and drop off in the Parish Office. You may also call the office at (510) 352-1537 or email Rhina at [email protected] to indicate your interest. Thank you for your consideration!

Please consider joining us at one of these times. You can RSVP by calling the parish office (510) 352-1537, or emailing [email protected]. This is also a chance to take some time out of your busy schedule to meet and communicate with each other. Please remember, you will not be asked to turn in a pledge at these receptions. Leave your wallets at home, but bring your questions! This campaign is absolutely vital for the life and growth of our Diocese and Parish. One of the most important things you can do during this campaign is to join us at a reception. Please be sure to RSVP as soon as possible!

Church of the AssumptionCampaign Newsletter March 28th & 29th, 2015 Volume 6

Stewardship A Christian steward is one who receives God's gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase tithe to the Lord. Sacrifice

Stewardship asks us to put God’s priorities first and to sacrificially give from our “first fruits.” This means that when we make our commitment to give, we do not give from what is left over after we pay our monthly

bills and set aside our extra money. Rather, we give from our first portion right off the

top. We make giving back to God our number one priority. Every one of us has a

different financial income and situation, not every gift is the same.

In order to be successful, we will need the prayers and support of all the members of

our parish family. In the coming weeks, you will receive information about the campaign through the mail, in the bulletin and from fellow parishioners. We ask for

your fullest attention, consideration and prayers for the campaign so that we may reap the benefits within our parish and our Diocese.

Remember, success depends on us!
