EDITOR'S COMMENTS Stop! Don't Jump to conclusions before you look

carefully through this issue. Yes, we have cut the number of pages, but we have not cut the content that is important to you. In the name of cost and efficiency, we have made

the following changes: (1) Removed the rates and policies pages, transferring the most pertinent details to the "Table of Contents" page and the full text to the Web. (2) Although we continue to sell books, we removed most of our in-house book advertising pag-es. Go to the Web for the full list, or call for information. (3) Reformatted the "Coming Radio Events" pages so that the same information will appear on fewer pages. (4) Dropped the color cover, a difficult decision, but we hope to bring it back for special occasions. What remains are the same elements that have

always been the core of this publication— articles, classified ads, and other information important to radio collecting and preservation. As a result of these changes, we have passed the savings on to you in the form of permanently reduced subscription rates. Unfortunately, we find that we have to eliminate one subscriber benefit — the 10 percent discount on books and free shipping. In making these changes, we continue to adapt to

the evolving environment of the publishing business. We know that A.R.C. is not alone in this struggle when Newsweek goes up for sale and Gourmet, a major food magazine, goes under. Some magazines have gone to Web-only publication: others, like us. try to do both: all of us, big and small, try to meet the needs of our readership, while making ends meet. We rely on your support to do lust that. Strong support is also rendered by contributors of

articles. In that regard. longtime readers will recognize the name Howard Stone, author of our lead article on his prized wireless sets as they appear on his new website. Howard's contributions go back to 1988 and a series of articles on his British crystal sets. Now retired, he continues his long commitment to radio preservation. High praise is due for his efforts — and for taking up the challenge of modern technology. Praise too is due Norman Mueller who went several

extra miles to trace the history of his Ozarka-Harbert set. A little research in my own Ozarka archives re-vealed how much the Ozarka Company did to encour-

age individual entrepreneurship in the sale of its prod-ucts. The pitch was "We make it impossible for you to fail," and Norman certainly did not fail in his search. Failure is not in Jerry Wieland's lexicon when it

comes to restoration projects. He too had a company name mystery — Freed-Eisemann or Earl — to solve, and then he had to meet the challenge of restoring a unique speaker. A true preservationist like Jerry gets as close to the original as possible. That same uncompromising spirit struck me when

we received Joseph Jackson's photo of a Zenith console jammed into his sports car for a ninety mile trip home from a flea market. No doubt Joseph would have found a way even if he had traveled via bicycle! Our traveling auction reporter Ray Chase finds a

way to ferret out even the small auctions, if they offer sets worth the trip. The Fada Catalin and the Emer-son Mickey Mouse at the Clinton Gallery auction in Pennsylvania attracted serious collectors. Ray's note about the mice nests in some of the sets is a reminder of our most important crusade — to get collectors to take care of their sets. A.R.C. Benefits. Be sure to take advantage of

A.R.C. benefits: a toll-free number (866) 371-0512; Discover, MasterCard, American Express, Visa ac-cepted: a secure shopping cart on the website, www.antiqueradio.com; a searchable auction price database, now over 25,000 entries: and the full mag-azine available on the website Note: Please do not send credit card info by e-mail. WITH THE COLLECTORS

Wireless at Stone Vintage Radio — Part 1 BY HOWARD STONE

Thrust into the new world of high tech, longtime collector Howard Stone introduces us to his website and to some of the prize sets that can be viewed there. (Editor)

I never planned to have a web-site. It started one Friday when I was having lunch with a friend and colleague, Larry Brown. Lar-ry had seen my collection of ra-dios and tubes, and at lunch he commented, "Howard, you should have a website. It would let more people see your radi-os." The following Monday, when I arrived at work, Larry told me that he had already mocked up a website. Well, what was I to do? I had to use it. He structured the website so that I could do all the input of pictures and descrip-tions of specific radios, with the exception of the items on the front page. I'm not exactly up to date. I like old technology

but am sometimes wary of modern innovations. Computers sometimes baffle me. I rely on our Tom-Tom, but still don't even own a cellphone (though I borrow my wife's on occasion), so I wondered how I would fare at running a website! As it turns out, I have come to enjoy having a virtual museum on the web. I talk via e-mail with people from many nations;

in fact, every month f have visitors from over 80 countries throughout the world. Some may want a close-up picture of the detector of a specific crystal set: others will ask for more information on a family heirloom: still others might ask what radio would be appropriate for a play, such as Dancing at Lughnasa, set in Ireland in the mid-1930s. In fact, several years ago in the U. K., my AK Model 84 was the primary image on the the-atre bill for another theatre production: they even had a 7-foot poster of the 84 standing in the theatre's entrance. In this and future articles, I will include pic-

tures and descriptions of the radios I most value, radios from before 1920. In this article, I will cover several prewireless pieces that I find especially fascinating from this period. These items and more can be seen on my website, StoneVintageRadio.com by clicking on "Wire-less (pre-1920) Radios."

Figure 1. Clapp-Eastham 1-Kilowatt Spark Transmitter.

CLAPP-EASTHAM 1-KILOWATT SPARK TRANSMITTER

The full kilowatt spark transmitter shown in Figure 1 was made by Clapp-Eastham in 1914. It is the set pictured on the opening page of StoneVintageRadio.com. The parts were as-sembled from several places in the U.S. The marble panel with the meter and the switches is original from the mid-teens and came with all of the components already attached. The desk is a hand-scraped, home-built piece designed after prebroadcast transmitting desks of the period. Oh yes, the transmitter works! If I oper-ate it in the middle of a thunderstorm with lightning striking, who knows where the static comes from?

CLAPP-EASTHAM BLITZEN RECEIVER

The Clapp-Eastham Company began man-ufacturing X-ray equipment in 1906, though it did not adopt the Clapp-Eastham name until 1908. The firm added wireless pieces over the next few years. I believe the Blitzen receiver, shown in Figure 2, was the first complete re-ceiver the firm manufactured. Indeed, at a time when most transmitters and receivers were assembled from parts purchased separately, it is one of the first small complete receivers (not the first) made by any manufacturer in the U.S.

Figure 2. Clapp-Eastham Blitzen receiver.

The Blitzen is a crystal receiver, which first sold in April 1912 for the princely sum of $33. The one pictured here actually cost $37 because it has the optional switch and loading coil seen outside of the receiver on the right. All that was needed was an antenna, a ground, and a set of headphones, and you were good to go. This particular Blitzen came from an estate.

The gentleman who sold it to me said it be-longed to his grandfather, and when they were disposing of his things, they came upon the Clapp-Eastham. They did not know much about its origins, except that the grandfather had owned it for many years.

DEFOREST RJ4

The 1914 DeForest RJ4, shown in Figure 3, complete with a Spherical Audion, is an original set, not one of the reproduction ones that are around. It was the first commercial radio made with a triode tube in the U.S. and cost $18 complete with a Spherical Audion. The Audion was used as a detector, instead of the more common crystal detector of the time.

WIRELESS SPECIALTY APPARATUS EATON OSCILLATOR

The Eaton oscillator by Wireless Specialty Ap-paratus (W.S.A.) is pictured in Figure 4. The label states, "Type-Triode C, Serial # 192, Wireless Specialty Apparatus." Eaton oscillators could be used as a part of a radio receiver or in the labora-

tory to generate RF signals. Used in a radio, the external circuit is etched in white on the panel and the internal circuit is etched in red. It cost $14.90 in 1919. Eric Wenaas has a good description of the Eaton oscillator on page 123 of Radiola: The Golden Age of RCA.

SPHERICAL AUDION BREADBOARD RADIO

Figure 5 shows a very nice Spherical Audion breadboard radio from 1915 or maybe a little later. It is a home-brew breadboard set on a solid 14" x 22" oak board. In the back is a Signal loose coupler. At the left is a Clapp-

Eastham Blitzen variable con-denser. In the center is a rheo-stat. On the right front is an Audion control box with a De-forest Spherical Audion. The white ceramic thing on the right side of the Audion control box is a rheostat to adjust the fila-ment voltage on the audion. The Audion serves as a detec-tor. There is no amplification.

(Stone Vintage Wireless, continued) ticle by Ludwell Sibley in the August 1997 issue of Radio Age, was probably the first commercial maker of wire-less equipment in Philadel-phia. The set shown in Fig-ure 6 is the F.B. Chambers Model F.B. .084 Wireless Standard Time Set. Manu-factured in 1913, it came as a crystal set, or, as pictured here, with the optional Spher-ical Audion. It had a unique locking drawer that could hold spare parts. The F.B. .084 Wireless

Standard Time Set was pitched to jewelers and watchmakers. At noon or 10 P.M., jewelers could tune the set to the time sent from Washington D.C. and accu-rately set their clocks and watches. I know of only one other Wireless Standard Time Set that exists and would appreciate any infor-mation on the Chambers Company, such as cata-logues or advertising that the owner would sell or photo-. copy.

FLEMING VALVE & RADIOSON

ELECTROLYTIC DETECTOR RECEIVER

The Fleming Valve & Ra-dioson electrolytic detector ra-dio, shown in Figure 7, was made primarily with Electro Importing parts. I don't know when it was made, but it is probably from the early teens. The operator could switch be-tween a Fleming valve (a di-ode tube) and an Electro Im-porting Radioson electrolytic detector. The vertical glass cylinder to the left of the vac-uum tube is the Radioson de-tector. Inside the case are two original batteries that operat-ed the buzzer which is inside as well. When I acquired this set, it

was missing the Fleming valve and the glass part of the electrolytic detector. I had the Fleming valve and a friend found the rest of the Radio-son detector about five years later. The case and all the parts were covered with '43 to inch of greasy dust. It took

a lot of cleaning, but the greasy covering had pre-served a remarkably fine fin-ish on the case and all of the components.

SE-712A RECEIVER

The SE-712A, shown in Figure 8, is a naval direction finding receiver like the SE-143. The label says, "Radio Compass Receiver, made for the Navy by International Sig-nal Company, 1917." It cov-ers the 300-6000 meters.

WESTERN ELECTRIC SCR-75 RADIO AIRCRAFT

RECEIVER

The Western Electric SCR-75 radio receiver, shown in Figure 9, is an aircraft receiv-er-interphone covering 0.355-2.0 Megahertz. It uses three VT-1 tubes. Manufactured in about 1918, it was made for the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army. I don't know much else about this set and am hoping someone can give me more information about it.

THE SPERRY SE-1012 RECEIVER

The Sperry SE-1012, shown in Figure 10, is a 1918 receiver that can switch be-tween a tube and a crystal detector. It is considerably smaller than the SE-712. It covers the frequency range of 300-6000 kilohertz, and was intended as a shore re-ceiving station for radio direc-tion finder use. Frequently, it was used with the SE 1000 or 1600 series of audio frequen-cy amplifiers. I have two of these receivers, one in a ma-hogany case and the other in a black finish case.

These are a few items from my wireless collection shown on my website: StoneVintageRadio.com. Many more items can be seen online. In a future issue, I will fo-cus on wireless sets made by Mar-coni. Stay tuned.

WITH THE COLLECTORS

My Ozarka and C.W. Harbert BY NORMAN MUELLER

An interesting radio picked up at auction proves to have a pretty un-usual history. All it needed was a collector who cared enough to pur-sue that history. (Editor)

In January 2008 at an estate auction in the Mena, Arkansas, area, I purchased the large, archa-ic, solid wood, box-like table radio, shown in Figure 1. It had four large dials, three selectors and earphone jacks on a slanted black front, but no name anywhere on it. Except for a piece broken from one large dial and a knob and wiper blade miss-ing from one selector, this radio looked as if it had been well cared for. All the wood was like new with only a few minor surface scuff marks — a restorer's dream. The A, B, and C battery com-

partment could be seen by tilting the radio compartment back, but all the wires were missing. See Figure 2. Lifting the top lid revealed the radio components, which were like new with a crystal detector (com-plete) and a 3-tube lineup, but no tubes. See Figure 3. Centered under the top lid was a

gold metallic label inscribed "Ozar-ka-Manufactured by C.W. Harbert-West Point, Arkansas," as shown in Figure 4. Though I had never heard this name before, at least I now have this interesting set re-stored. See Figure 5.

Figure 1. My Ozarka set as found. The tuning knob on the right is broken and the right-most selector switch is missing.

Figure 2. The lower battery compartment is revealed by tilting the radio portion of the cabinet backward.

Figure 3. The components inside the set can be seen here. The 3-tube unit on the left actually is a sealed module and weighs about seven pounds! The crystal detector also is mounted on this unit.

Figure 4. The Ozarka/Harbert label

When no information for this particular Ozarka could be found on the Internet. I turned to my friend Larry Lamia in Mena, formerly of Vintage Radio in Irving. Texas, for his help through contacts in radio circles. Larry directed me to Jim Sargent in Texas whose knowledge of Ozarkas is one of the best in this region. Even he wasn't aware of an Ozarka of this description in existence and surely not one manufactured in Arkansas. One possibility is that this particular radio was an

early kit form only, never assembled and sold direct-ly by Ozarka, and thus not listed as an Ozarka model.

THE SEARCH FOR C.W. HARBERT

The label on this set had so stirred my curiosity that in August 2009 I made the 130 mile trip to West Point, Arkansas, a quaint little town of about 200 located northeast of Little Rock. I wanted to find some descendants of this C.W. Harbert and obtain whatev-er information I could about him and the Ozarka I had purchased. After searching for descendants

and finding none, nor anyone who knew of them. I chanced upon a gracious lady who introduced me to David Hamilton who had been mayor of the town for many years. His father had grown up with the Harbert's son and he knew the family well. Needless to say, he was dumbfounded that I had come so far to inquire about a family that hadn't resided in the town for 80 years. When I related the story of my Ozarka, he, in turn, told me the Harbert history.

THE HARBERT RADIO STORY

C.W. Harbert arrived in West Point in 1908 as the depot man-ager when the Union Pacific Rail-road was built through that area. He held that position until a massive strike idled the railroad in 1921. Harbert then opened a hamburger/sandwich shop

in town, and about the same time, he purchased his first radio kit from Ozarka. He assembled the kit, which became the first radio known in the region. As word spread, many area residents began to

congregate at the Harbert front porch to see and hear this modern marvel. Naturally, people began to want to have their own radios, and the enterprising Harbert seized the opportunity. He began to pur-

chase and assemble kits from Ozarka to sell in the area with his own label placed inside the lid. How long he was in this business or how many kits he assembled and sold is not known. How many of these radios like mine still exist is also unknown. I would appreciate any information that might be out there from other collectors.

THE HARBERT POST-RADIO STORY

In the late 1920s, C.W. Harbert's son wrote a book titled The Steamboats Don't Come Here Any-more. The title came from the town's history as a shipping center before the railroad arrived. It was then the farthest point north reachable by steam-boats on the Little Red River. The book included the story of his father and his radios, as well as stories of other families, some less than flattering. that caused quite a riff in the community. No copy exists in the local library. In 1928, the Harbert's house burned to the ground

causing many a rumor, including that C.W.'s wife torched it in order to get out of that town. That is a possibility, since the insurance from the house allowed Harbert to purchase a new Chevrolet, pack up the family, and leave for Arizona. Thus ended all

remnants of C.W. Harbert-Ozarka-West Point. Ar-kansas, except for the memories of a few old-timers.

(Norman Mueller. 5841 Hwy 71 S. Cove, AR 71937)

Norman Mueller's radio interest dates back to his teens and a gift of a crystal set from his grandmoth-er. He worked for many years in a Zenith sales and repair shop, followed by a career as an industrial switch gear technician for GE and Emerson. Radio as a hobby is now the focus of his retirement years.

RESTORATION TOPICS

The Radio with Two Names — Freed-Eisemann or Earl?

BY JEROME WIELAND

Vintage radios with mystery or duplicate labels always provoke interest. Jerry Wieland's anniversary gift console also turned out to be a challenging restoration project. (Editor)

For a wedding anniversary present, my brother presented my wife and me with an old console he found at an estate sale. Figure 1 shows it in restored condition. At the time, It impressed me more than it did my wife. The cabinet was in good

condition, except for the top which had severe veneer damage. The chassis was clean and had all its tubes, as shown in Figure 2. I noticed the name C.A. Earl on the metal dial escutcheon, shown in Figure 3. However, a large label on

the back of the chassis stated it was a Freed Radio Model NR-55 or 56 manufactured by Freed-Eisemann, as shown in Figure 4. Then I noticed the speaker label also had the C.A. Earl name. See Figure 5. I had heard of the Freed-Eisemann Company but not C.A Earl. When I consulted my radio

reference books, I learned that C.A. Earl was president of the Freshman Company, and in 1928 had bought the Freed-Eisemann Company. He planned to merge it with the Freshman Company and produce two product lines in one large new factory. He would keep the Freed-Eisemann name for one line but replace the Freshman name with his own name for the other line. Production in the new factory began in mid-1929, but both lines were in receivership by the end of

Figure - . My restored Earl — or is it a Freed-Eisemann?

1929 due to the stock market crash, according to Alan Douglas in Volume 2 of Radio Manufacturers of the 1920's. I assume that my radio was produced as an Earl model during this period.

THE RESTORATION PROJECT

Now that my curiosity was satisfied, I began an examination of the chassis and speaker. When I removed both from the cabinet, the speaker first caught my attention. Half of the leather surround was missing and the remainder was dried and cracked. What was left of the thin, white paper cone had curled like a potato chip. It began to tear when I tried to unravel it. The cone was history. I set the speaker aside to

determine the chassis state. The power toggle switch was not working, but some WD-40 unstuck it. An audio interstage coupling transformer had an open winding. A search of my transformer stock yielded a substitute. The volume control is an

unusual dual-stage affair. Unfortunately, the rear stage wasn't working. When I disassembled it, I found that the resistive element was badly worn and open. Searching through my control stock. I found a single-stage pot of similar design and was able to couple it mechanically to the good front stage. It pays to keep old parts! Everything else looked OK, including the

power transformer and the power supply filter capacitors, which was quite a surprise. I selected a permanent magnet speaker and an audio transformer with a primary center tap to match the push-pull 71A audio tubes. With the aid of numerous clip leads, the radio sprang to life. Some quick alignment yielded decent sensitivity and audio quality. Those power supply filter caps really did work. No hum was present.

THE SPEAKER

Now I had to decide what to do about the speaker. I wanted to use the Earl speaker if at all possible since it seemed rather unusual. It has no field coil. The label describes it as an Inductor Dynamic Speaker Model 375. An Internet search revealed that this type of

speaker was used during the 1920s fora short time before moving voice coil speakers

became popular due to their beter sound quality. The inductor type was said to have poor high frequency response, according to the Wikipedia article I found on the Internet. With the speaker cover ramoved. two large

tapped primary are visible, as shown in Figure 6. The word inductor in the speaker name refers to an induction motor which this speaker drive mechanism is said to resemble. The threaded shaft that attaches to the speaker cone is referred to as an armature and is activated by the transformer secondary field, according to a 1929 Popular Mechanics article. I remembered having an old speaker of about

the same diameter in the garage attic. The field coil was open, but I decided years ago to keep it because the cone was in good condition. I was able to find it, but the cone diameter was too small. It barely made contact with the edge of the Earl speaker basket. The original Earl cone had a stiff cardboard ring which I decided to use as a diameter expander. Gluing it to the edge of the smaller cone would allow me to glue the cone to the basket edge. The next problem was how to attach the cone

to the armature. My replacement cone had a spider-type attachment, but the Earl has a metal nose with a small hole for the armature shaft to pass through, as shown in Figure 7. Two nuts are used to attach the armature to the cone. I decided to remove the Earl metal nose and graft it onto the replacement cone. After I removed the spider from the replacement cone, I glued the Earl nose inside the replacement cone. I had to lengthen the armature shaft to reach

the new cone. I did this by attaching a screw to the armature with a thicker than normal nut and threading both into this nut. I then secured the metal nose to the extension with another nut behind the screw head. I carefully aligned the cone extension ring to the speaker basket, clamped it temporarily in place, and hot-melt glued the ring to the basket. The restored speaker is seen in Figure 8. When I first tried this reworked speaker, the

audio volume was low. By readjusting the nose location on the armature, I found the optimum position and the volume improved. As stated in

Figure 7. The armature shaft behind the speaker cone.

Figure 8. The armature shaft is attached to the center of the cone.

a Wikipedia article, there is a lack of high frequency response. However, I am going to keep the Earl speaker in the Earl radio just as C.A. intended. The final tasks were to clean the cabinet,

apply some stain to the scratches, and attached a new piece of walnut veneer to the top. As indicated earlier, Figure 1 shows the completed project.

Radio Fever CONTRIBUTED BY JOSEPH JACKSON

Joseph Jackson has a very serious case of radio lever. A healthy person might balk at buying a console at a flea market after realizing that he was driving a sports car. Not Joe Jackson! (Editor)

On a last-minute whim. I decided to run up to Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta on a recent Saturday. Good radio pickin's there are getting slim, but I occasionally find a nice Bakelite tabletop radio reasonably priced. and even an occasional Catalin set, unreasonably priced. Not expecting too much, I hopped into my Miata,

drove the 90 miles, and arrived by 9:30 A.M. Not more than 10 minutes later. I spotted a decent Zenith 12-S-265, 12-tube set with a shutter dial and motorized tuning, for under $200. I haggled a bit with the dealer, but. realizing I didn't have my truck. I moved on and went through the rest of the buildings. As I was about to leave, I stopped by one more time

and explained my dilemma to the dealer. He joked, "There's no extra charge if you want to try shoehorning it in. I made a few measurements and decided to go for it. It did fit, just barely, but only with the top down. I must admit I got some strange stares as I

drove 1-75 back home with a Zenith console as my passenger.

AUCTION REPORT

Robert H. Clinton Gallery Auction Jamison, Pennsylvania - August 29, 2009

CONTRIBUTED BY RAY CHASE

The Robert H. Clinton & Co. held this sale at the Warwick Twp. Fire Company Hall located in Jamison, Bucks County, Penn-sylvania. This was a fairly small general auction that had adver-tised a collection of antique radi-os. The collection was small and some of it was in very poor con-dition: however, a good contin-gent of radio collectors showed up and, fortunately, the auction-eer sold off the radios early in the sale. Most radios sold very cheaply, but enough serious col-lectors were there to bid up the Mickey Mouse radio to $525 and the Fada Catalin to $480. I hope that the buyer of the

two battery sets for $20, had a good set of rubber gloves to dig out the early tubes that were encased in an extensive mice nest.

Ray Chase has been a radio enthusiast and a collector of many types of radios for years. Cur-rently, he specializes in World War II electronics equipment, as well as early battery superhetero-dynes. He also has an extensive collection of radio documentation and ephemera.

Though handsome, German radios appear nct to be popular as exemplified by the low bids on these two radios: the Saba. top, sold for $3 7, and the Blaupunkt console sold for only $7.

Unfortunately, too many radios end up like this — serving as a mouse nest!

Estes Auctions Specializing in Vintage Radios Complete Auction & Appraisal Service

Notice! Vintage Radio Auction - Rare Item

Saturday, July 24, 2010 — 10 AM EDT at the Expo Auction Center

8157 Garman Rd., Burbank Ohio (Exit 204 off 1-71) then south on SR #83 to the Love's Truck Stop, turn left

onto Garman Rd. and follow 7/8 of a mile to the auction site.

This auction will offer the very rare and ornate 1929 Zenith Model 39 Spanish Deluxe radio. This is a beautiful radio offered in 1929 just as the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began, this example was purchased directly at the Zenith factory at Plant #1 in Chicago in the fall of 1929. It has remained with the family for 81 years. The present family member has now decided to let some radio collector have the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful piece of radio history. The serial number on this radio is ZR-12, a very low number in production. All the original papers are with this radio, the bill of sale from Zenith Plant 1, the warranty paper and the instruction papers. This is a unique radio that will grace any collectors home or museum. We are very excited and happy to offer this radio at our radio auction. Watch for pictures in June. We will post them on our website. We hope you make plans to join us at this special auction.
