Friendship Quilters of Western Colorado Guild Meeting May 27, 2021

President, Mary Ross, opened the meeting at 9:30 at the Event Center. There were 37 members and 7 guests present. Mary asked each guest to introduce themselves.

Committee Reports

Black Canyon Quilt Show (BCQS) – Elizabeth Binder reviewed the minutes of the recent board meeting. There are several Education opportunities coming up. Details are in the newsletter. Because there is no quilt show this summer, we will be having a presence in the Centennial Room at the downtown Farmers’ Market on the 4th Saturdays of June, July, Aug and September. Quilters are asked to see Margaret Noah to volunteer to work in the Boutique. Proceeds for the sales will go to Sharing Ministries. There will be a showing of quilts at the July Farmer’s market. Committees are busy planning for an inperson 2022 Quilt Show.

Programs—Jean Hatfield and Cyndi Holman reviewed their schedule for programs for coming months. Details will be included in the newsletter. Our program today is with Cyndi, the Scrap Queen, and a trunk show of the many ways she uses them in quilts. The June program will be Origami/fabric folding by Carolyn Ray.

By popular demand there will be a challenge this year – The Quilt and Toy challenge. Details are in the newsletter. The reveal will be at the guild meeting in November.

Small groups --There were envelopes on the program table for small groups. Anyone who is interested in a small group is asked to put their name in the appropriate envelope to indicate interest. Small groups will meet and determine when and where to meet.

Quilts of Valor – Sue Palmer described this program and shared how to nominate a veteran to receive a quilt. All quilters are invited to join the sew in each 2nd Tuesday, at the Christian Church, 2351 Sunnyside Road, 9-4.

Next board meeting at 9:30 on June 3 at Elizabeth Binder’s garden.

Next guild meeting is June 24 at 9:30 at our old meeting room at Friendship Hall. Socialization at 9:00 and meeting at 9:30.

Respectfully submitted, Jane Nannestad, Secretary

Tips and Tricks Sewing Strips TogetherWhen sewing more than two strips together, sew them in opposite directions—if the center strip is always on the bottom,

you automatically do this. Sewing in this manner will prevent a frustrating curve that is common when sewing strips together. This same technique can be applied to sewing quilt rows together.

Pin Tuck Trick If you missed the Susan Cleveland Zoom class, you missed out on some GREAT tips, tricks and beautiful quilts. One tip that really stood out to me was Susan’s “Pin-tuck Trick” to help keep seams straight and accurate when crossing seam allowances. Butt seams together as usual with seam allowances going in opposite directions. Instead of trying to pin through all layers and having a big hump, raise the upper seam allowances, tuck the pin underneath in the fold, and pin only through two layers of fabric close to the previous seam line.

From the Program Committee

Summer has arrived! With no 2021 Black Canyon Quilt show preparations underway, there should be time for learning new quilting skills, planning for new projects or maybe finishing up the inevitable UFO’s that seem to collect in the sewing room. (I know they’re in there!!!)

Our JUNE PROGRAM will be an interesting foray into the world of Fabric Origami with our own Carolyn Ray leading the way. Elsewhere in this Newsletter are instructions for the preparations to be made at home so our time at the Guild meeting can be spent learning the folding techniques. This program should provide inspiration for some lovely projects in the coming months.

A SECOND CHALLENGE will also roll out in June with an October turn in/reveal deadline. Get ready for some Fall Fabric Fun!!

JULY PROGRAM: Color of the Month is GREEN! Wear lots of GREEN, bring GREEN projects to show! There will be a SPECIAL CATEGORY for “Green Projects” that are upcycled, or recycled! Really nice Doorprizes are on the line so get creative, quilters!

The July meeting will be the Annual Guild Picnic at Riverbottom Park on July 22. We’ll start at 9:30 as usual with a Guild Meeting. We’re planning some special activities to keep things lively before we dive into Subway Sandwiches, chips and homemade desserts for lunch. Guests are welcome for a $5 charge. No RSVP is necessary--- we know plans can change ---just come and have fun with us. Reminder – bring your own chair and drinks!!

AUGUST PROGRAM: Kathy Holen from Pueblo will present a talk/program during the meeting and also a Class afterward. The free program is “Where Did My Points Go, and How Do I Get Them Back?” which should be quite helpful to many quilters! The Class will start at 1:00 and will be on using the “Wing Clipper” and the “LeMoyne Star” rulers. Fee for the Class will be $20 (FQWC will pick up the remaining per person costs). Watch for sign up sheets and supply lists in June and July.

SEPTEMBER PROGRAM: Sandra Starley from Utah will present a talk/trunk show called “Everything Old is New Again” (See https://utahquiltappraiser.blogspot.com/p/lectures.html for description) and then will offer a 3 hr class afterward called “Word Play”. This is a paper-pieced project that can be customized to your liking. (See https://utahquiltappraiser.blogspot.com/p/other-classes.html for description) The class fee will be $30 (FQWC will pick up the remaining per person costs). Watch for sign up sheets and supply lists in July and August.

Your Program Committee is working hard to bring interesting and fun activities to inspire your own creativity. Hopefully everyone will find at least a few worthwhile moments at each meeting that you can take home to your own sewing rooms and put to use. Can’t wait to see what beautiful things YOU will share at the next Guild Meeting!

From the Sewing Room,

Jean Hatfield and Cyndi Holman

June Program Information Hands-On Origami Projects to be Taught by Carolyn Ray following business meeting

Advance Prep Work Needed! Come prepared to do one or more. You choose what to make.

Black and Red Trivet: You will need the following;15” square backing15”square Insul Bright8     5” charm squares--  Typically 2 colors with 4 squares of eachSewing MachineMatching thread or a contrast.  This thread will show on the front and back!A ruler that will go diagonally across the 5” squares. suggest at least an 18”

ruler.

“4 Patch” Mug Rug Cut 3 pieces of fabric A and 3 pieces of fabric B for each item you want to make. They should be squares ½” larger than what you want for the finished project. (If you want a 4” coaster, then cut the fabrics at 4 ½” square.) You will also need at least 1 piece of batting (same size) for each coaster or mug rug. For use as a pot holder or trivet I would recommend using at least 1 layer of Insul Bright and one layer of thin batting. Again same size as your pot holder/trivet. **** BRING A MACHINE/THREAD to sew these up.

-Star Fuse 2 fabrics wrong sides together and cut strips ¾” to 1” max width. Length should be 20” for a ¾” wide strip and 25” for a 1” wide strip. You will need 4 strips for each star. ALTERNATE: rather than fabric strips, use the 2 sided ribbon you would use to wrap a package, not the ribbon you would buy for sewing. Ribbon should be at least ½ to ¾” wide.

Square Ornament Cut 2 fabric circles from each of two contrasting fabrics. Sew right sides together. Clip seams and turn. Hand stitch the opening together and press well. These should be about 7”-8” in diameter. Use a saucer or plate as a guide if you do not have a circle cutter. (Carolyn will bring her circle cutter to the class) Bring a decorative bead or button to attach to the center. ****BRING NEEDLE/THREAD TO HAND STITCH. BRING MACHINE/THREAD, ETC. TO MAKE ADDITIONAL ORNAMENTS if you wish.

Triangle Ornament or Wreath Cut two 5” strips of contrasting fabric. Place right sides together. Using a 60° triangle (all sides are equal) cut as many triangle pairs as you want to make for ornaments. Each ornament takes 1 triangle pair. The Wreath will take 18 pairs. (The Star, Carolyn’s beautiful sample she showed at Guild, will take 72 total triangles). Sew the triangles right sides together, turn and carefully push the points out as sharply as you can, and hand stitch the opening closed. Press well. Bring 2

decorative beads or buttons for center of each ornament. The 5” strips make an ornament that is about 2 ½” long. If you want a larger ornament, just use wider strips of fabric to start. If you want to make the wreath or star, there is one 6/0 size bead in the center of each triangle. (18 for Wreath, 72 for Star) ****BRING NEEDLE/THREAD TO HAND STITCH. BRING MACHINE/THREAD, ETC. TO MAKE ADDITIONAL ORNAMENTS OR WREATH/STAR if you wish.

Quilt-N-Toy ChallengeIdea: Create a quilt that coordinates with a toy or child-appropriate item like a book or doll or costumeInspiration: a fabric panel, a fun quilt pattern, novelty fabric – or – a kid’s toy, book, costume, etc.

If you have a special child/teen in mind that inspires your quilt/toy, that’s great – create away and keep the item for your special little one. If you just want to join the Challenge but do NOT have a particular child in mind, FQWC will find a family that would appreciate your beautiful gift.Turn-in/Reveal will be November 18 at FQWC Guild Meeting. Bring the quilt you’ve made and the toy that goes with it (unwrapped, but with an appropriately sized gift bag). We’ll display all the quilts and toys for Quilter’s Choice awards at the November 18 meeting.
