Womack said, “I was really nervous to go to the grade school, but it turned out to be a really fun experience. I’m excited to go back.”

Marketing class shows some love on Valentine’s

Beta Club participates in Food Pantry distributions

By Eliza Goines

By Eliza Goines Covid-19 has caused many hardships, yet organizations such as Beta Club are helping those who require assistance in these difficult times. Once a month, Beta Club members have been earning service hours by volunteering at a local food pantry at First Baptist Church in Vienna. To keep the community safe, the food pantry is offering drive through services. As cars drive up, Beta Club members help load food into cars.

Beta Club Sponsor Ms. Bradley says, “With the transition the food pantry made from the traditional pick up to now being a drive-thru service with food loaded into their cars, assistance was needed with the manual labor aspect of this. Our Betas are able to provide this service, all while maintaining social distancing guidelines.” The community is extremely grateful for the First Baptist Church and Beta Club members for their acts of service in these times.

Beta Club members help load food into cars at food drive. Pictured from left to right: Izabella Langston, Katie Meyers, and Lily Moore.

On January 15, Ms. Borders fifth hour marketing class began making Valentines day cards to enter into Dave Fowler’s Valentines for Seniors Card Drive. Students worked hard on homemade cards which were distributed to the local seniors. The class set a goal of 1,000 cards, but ended with a grand total of 2,052 cards. Senator Fowler’s office received close to 10,000 cards in total from 67 K-12 classes. These cards were delivered to 47 assisted living centers and nursing homes

within the 59th district. The class is very excited for the results of this competition. They are grateful for the opportunity to participate and give back to the community. The top four classes will receive a pizza party, courtesy of Senator Fowler’s office. Ms. Borders says, “I’m so proud of my class! I knew these kids had huge hearts, and I’m thankful they were able to put a smile on the faces of elderly residents throughout Southern Illinois. Win or lose, they will get their pizza party.”

The fifth hour marketing class participants of Dave Fowler’s Valentines for Senior Card Drive are pictured above.

Teacher’s High School MemoriesMs. Palmer Mr. Hill

My favorite memories from Vienna High School were playing softball and basketball and my two years in HOSA. Sports were my life back then and some of my fondest memories. I will never forget when Coach Ross Hill came into the locker room after an ugly loss in basketball and snapped the clipboard over his knee and launched a few markers. As a coach now, I understand where that came from. In softball, my favorite memory was going to the state tournament as a freshman. I only got to be a pinch runner, but how cool of an experience that was. My other favorite part of high school was my two years in HOSA, nursing class. We took trips both years to compete in HOSA. Ms. Reichert was the reason those two years were so memorable. I will never forget her talking my mom into telling me to take the nursing class, which I had no intention to be a nurse, but I ended up loving it so much. My advice to my students now would be to live life to the fullest and always be honest with yourself.

My favorite memories from Vienna High School as a student back in the day are numerous. I can really remember the 4-minute trek from one end of the high school building to the other, while skillfully navigating the mass of humanity through multiple entrances and exits. I also fondly remember all of the teachers and coaches that were wonderful influences on both my teaching and coaching career. We’ve since became lifelong friends much after high school. Can’t forget about Homecoming Week, a couple of proms, practicing baseball for both fall and spring season in the miserable elements outside. I loved announcing play by play for the basketball teams’ videos we used to shoot on the old RCA Camcorder. I remember Friday and Saturday evenings everyone hanging out on the square until curfew. I don’t ever remember wearing a mask or social distancing. My advice to my students now would be to stay active, to be involved, you only get to do this high school life once.

National Beta Scholarship Recipients

Students dip into a new experienceOn Friday, February 5th,

students in Mr. Stewart’s digital graphics class experienced hyrdo dipping for the first time. The students were encouraged to bring in items from home to dip into the paints. Items brought in ranged from thermos’, deer antlers, cell phone cases, soccer cleats, and even a skate board.

Mr. Stewart said, “I decided to introduce hydro dipping in the digital graphics class to let students experience different mediums in graphic arts. This experience also was a good way to get them out of the classroom and introduce them to the shop.”

Kalysta Conley and Aubrey Anderson were chosen as semifinalist for the 2020-2021 National Beta scholarship program. There were over 2,700 appliants, but only the top 200 are set to recieve scholarships this May. Both Kalysta and Aubrey will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship. This scholarship can be used towards tuition, books, and academic supplies.

The National Beta scholarship selects winners based on academics, leadership, commendable character,

school and community service, and National Beta involvement.

Sponsor Ms. Bradley says, “For several years we have earned the distinction of having more than one student qualify for a $1,000 scholarship, a tradition that I am pleased to continue to have students earn. Kalysta and Aubrey are both well deserving. The application process is quite competitive, and $1,000 in free money with no strings attached is something even more of our VHS Betas should apply for.”

How Anatomy students feel after test days.

What I really need to clean out from the floor of my car.

What Mrs. Lindsay will do when I beat her in this battle.

If you have to ask, you are one.

A cute, pudgy little dog. The kind with a really squishy face that you just want to SQUEEZE!!!

I feel like this is a military or attack term. First guess: you are in the fox hole and the enemy has their barrel pointed straight at you. You are straight dead.

A beautiful, herbaceous plant! Calluna vulgaris, the common heather, is found in glens and

countrysides across the UK.

Short for “shooketh”.Shaken to your core about something someone just revealed to you. For example: “Addison Kerley’s obsession with One Direction has me shook!”

Collecting covert intel on someone, usually tracing with a digital footprint. For example: “He claims that he was home all night, but I got his Insta receipts placing him at the park.”

To blow up on someone, rightly or wrongly. I have gone off on students for trying to openly cheat in my class.

Boomer is a millennial term for “you old fart”. For example: “Back in my day, I paid my tuition up front. Every college student should be able to do that if they just work hard enough and stop being lazy!” “OK BOOMER, but your tuition was just $150 a semester. Would love to exchange tuition rates with you…..”
