Gov. Perry Announces launch ofTexas Education on iTunes U

Putting Texas School ChildrenFirst Helps Ensure OurEconomy’s Future Success

CORPUS CHRISTI – Gov. RickPerry today announced the creationof Texas Education on iTunes U,which offers a modern approach tokeeping teachers and students engagedand informed by providing free, supplementary educational contentthat can be accessed anywhere.

“iTunes U will easily and efficientlydistribute Texas-based educationalmaterials to teachers, parents andstudents statewide, and will helpimprove Texas education and secureour position as the best place to liveand work in the years to come,” Gov.Perry said. “The quality of educationin Texas is steadily improving as wecontinue to combine tried and trueteaching methods with newtechnology to achieve educationalsuccess.”

Texas Education on iTunes U willallow teachers to access professionaldevelopment and support materials, while giving students access toi n fo rma t i on to he lp w i t hunderstanding concepts or conductingadditional research on a subject area.Additionally, iTunes U will serve as avenue for state agencies and non-profit organizations to post theireducational content.

“Texas Education on iTunes Urepresents another addition to Texas’efforts to put rich and relevant contentinto the hands of our teachers, students and the public at large,”

Commissioner of Education RobertScott said. “iTunes U gives the state adynamic platform to provide contenton-the-go.”

Gov. Perry also announced achallenge for math educators togenerate professional developmentcontent, such as videos or podcasts, focusing on algebra readiness forTexas Education on iTunes U. Thiswill create an online resource to helpteachers ensure their students masterthe curriculum or better understand aconcept.

Texas Education on iTunes U expandsProject Share, a collaborative effortwith the New York Times and EpsilenLLC, which will enable the creationand delivery of high qualityprofessional development in aninteractive and engaging eLearningenvironment. The online platform, unveiled this spring, also providesaccess to online resources, onlinecourse content, academic networkingan d p r o f e s s i o n a l l e a r n ingcommunities. The Project Shareinitiative currently supports more than146,000 teacher accounts, and thewebsite (www.projectsharetexas.org)will link directly to Texas Educationon iTunes U.

Ensuring that Texas remains a leaderin job creation depends on thedevelopment of our workforce. Gov.Perry has previously outlined severaleducation initiatives for the 2011legislative session, including:

• A $160 million expansion of theScience, Technology, Engineering andMath (STEM) program, increasing thenumber and scope of T-STEMAcademies and funding STEMscholarships to help ensure studentsreceive a competitive education in

these subjects.• Expansion of the Virtual SchoolNetwork (VSN) to create the TexasVirtual High School that will providestudents who have dropped out ofschool an opportunity to earn a highschool diploma through virtualcourses, while improving access tohigh-quality courses for all students. The VSN was created during the 2007Legislative Session to establish astatewide network of online coursesavailable to students across the state. These virtual courses give studentsaccess to classes their schools may notoffer, additional access to dual creditopportunities, and additionalflexibility to help keep students inschool. • Generation Adelante/GeneraciónForward, which encourages Texashigh school graduates to pursue highereducation by providing them withi n fo rma t i on a b o u t co l l egeapplications, financial aid and collegevisits. These college fairs also givestudents the opportunity to speak withrepresentatives from more than 30colleges, universities and technicalcolleges from across the state.• Requiring high school students to beenrolled in school or working towarda GED to be eligible to keep a Texasdriver license.• Providing a tax incentive toemployers who grant their employeestwo hours a week of paid time off toreturn to school or study for theirGED. Once the employees havereceived their diploma or GED, theemployer is eligible to receive $1,500per student in credit toward sales taxliability.

Texas Unemployment Rate Steady at 8.2 Percent in JulyTexas employers add 168,900 jobs since January

The Texas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 8.2 percent in July, unchanged from June, andcontinued to trend well below the U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 9.5 percent. Texas totalnonagricultural employment grew by 4,600 jobs in July for a total of 168,900 jobs gained since January.

“Private sector employers in Texas continued adding jobs in July, a trend we’ve seen since the first of the year,”said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Tom Pauken. “Significant Government job losses offsetmuch of the gains in the private sector in July.”

The Professional and Business Services industry recorded its largest monthly job gain in more than a decadewith 12,600 positions added in July. Employment in Financial Activities was up by 3,700 jobs.

“Consistent job growth over many industries provides opportunities for Texans, but we remain concerned aboutthose who have not been able to find work, especially the long-term unemployed,” said TWC CommissionerRepresenting Labor Ronny Congleton. “TWC and the 28 local workforce boards are committed to helping jobseekers find these opportunities.”

Mining and Logging employment grew by 4,600 jobs in July and has added jobs for six consecutive months. The Construction and Manufacturing industries each added 4,300 jobs in July.

“Texas employers are regaining ground with broad-based job growth in seven industries in July, highlighted bygains in Professional and Business Services,” said TWC Commissioner Representing the Public AndresAlcantar. “Job seekers should turn to WorkInTexas.com and our workforce centers across Texas forreemployment and support services.”

The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 5.7 percent. The Amarillo MSA had the second lowest unemployment rate in July at 5.8 percent, followed by the SanAngelo MSA at 6.6 percent (not seasonally adjusted).
