For those of you who have not attended all of the Saturday services, St. Andrew’s has offered a Holy Eucharist service with contemporary music, evening prayer, a spoken Eucharist, and a Taizé service every month throughout the program year. Committee members spoke about what aspects of each of the services are appealing and how to build on those strengths. Members mentioned how they liked the intimacy of the contemporary service and its informal character. They talked about how the time and day could be a helpful alternative for families who are busy on Sundays. One member mentioned how she enjoyed the beauty and intimacy of the chapel for the spoken Eucharist. There was a consensus about how much we appreciate the quietness and reflective nature of the chants and silence of the Taizé service. Our next goal was to discern how we might incorporate these strengths into a consistent regular weekly service. We wanted to reinvigorate the worshipers and attract seekers. So, we divided into two subcommittees: liturgy and music. The liturgy group, guided by Natalie Regan, looked at the Rite 3 Eucharist and the New Zealand Prayer Book. Rite 3, which can be found on page 400 of the Book of Common Prayer, is a flexible framework for the Eucharist. The liturgy subcommittee found that they liked the flexible structure of Rite 3 and the inclusive language of the New Zealand Prayer Book. The music subcommittee, guided by me, met and listened to classical and folk music. We talked about how Taizé music might fit into the Eucharist. While we wanted to have music at every service, we were concerned about overstretching our current resources. We came to the realization that we might have to have a spoken Eucharist three or four weeks of the month and a Taizé service for one of them. We would make the final decision when we brought our findings to the table. When we reconvened, we came to the consensus that on most Saturdays we would offer a 5:00 p.m. Rite 3 service in the Chapel, with prayers from the New Zealand Prayer Book. On third Saturdays we would have a Taizé service in the Nave and on fifth Saturdays, evening prayer with music in the Chapel. Pastor Rosemari nudged the committee to reconsider having music at the services on a weekly basis, so I offered to find a professional musician to lead the music for those services. If I may venture to speak on behalf of the Saturday worship committee, I would say that we’re excited to offer this new service which we hope will connect our congregation and the wider community to God in new ways. I hope that you would consider Saturday worship as another option in your worship life. We are happy to help you to experience God in new ways. Dear St. Andrew’s Family,

As we begin a new program year with Sunday school, forums, and choirs, I am pleased to announce

a new worship service to our cycle of prayer! A committee has been meeting to discern how we may help our Saturday service to grow. The committee, comprised of Saturday service attendees John Corbett, Amy Dutton, Deborah England, Ellen Gleason, myself, Jim Kirkpatrick, Julie Morgan, Stacey Peters, Natalie Regan, and Pastor Rosemari, met to talk about the various services offered every Saturday and how we might improve them.

The liturgy group, guided by Natalie Regan,

looked at the Rite 3 Eucharist and the New Zealand Prayer Book.

VESTRY NOTES SENIOR WARDEN

MARK FOSTER [email protected]

If you were fortunate enough to have made it to the 10:00 a.m. services on August 18th (for Holy Baptism) and/or 25th (for the Blessing of the Backpacks), you can’t escape noticing: we’ve been blessed with a huge number of young children in our flock! It’s a joy to behold, and a sign of a healthy and growing congregation with a bright future!

The Backpacks ceremony signals it’s time for kids to go back to school. It also means our annual Stewardship campaign is coming soon. What better way to put us in the right frame of mind for considering how we can lend our time, talents, and treasure to support our common mission. You’ve seen the call for Sunday School teachers in the Weekly Net. And there are so many ways beyond that for all of us to help ensure St. Andrew’s continues to be the place for these youngsters to Worship, Serve, and Belong for years to come!

To learn more about all the opportunities you have to pitch in, make it a point to attend our Ministry Fair (back by popular demand!) after the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, September 15th.

DRUM ROLL PLEASE...The playground upgrades are complete! The old mulch was re-graded, picnic tables moved, the shed re-leveled (thanks to Brian Jones) new mulch installed, AND the new school bus is in place!

It is wonderful to have all the teachers back, and we are excited to welcome

the children next week. Carlos has been busy with projects, cleaning floors and carpets. Teachers have been busy getting their rooms ready and welcomed the parents to back-to-school-night on August 29, 2019.

The Preschool will continue to do the Food for Friends program this year to help those students at Bonnie Brae Elementary School whose families are food insecure. I want to thank all the families from Vacation Bible School and Mission Friends for their generous donations of food items and to the children for assembling 204 bags of food! These bags will cover the needs of BBES students in August & September.

Please join us (and bring new friends) to Preschool Sunday on October 6, 2019 during the 10:00 a.m. service followed by an enhanced coffee hour in the Parish Hall.

We are excited to begin our thirty-fourth year of providing a great preschool experience to young children!

OUTREACH

Our ECHO Food Drive is underway! Pick up a paper bag and list of needed items and return your donations to the church no later than September 8th. Your participation in this important outreach ministry will help many families in the Burke and Springfield area.

St. Andrew’s Annual Food Drive to Support ECHO Marliese Durso | [email protected]

Our ESOL program will resume on September 10th, with registration on September 3rd. The program addresses the needs of limited proficient English students. Beginning students learn basic English vocabulary and “survival” English, while advanced students are lead in discussions about American culture, literature, and local resources that might meet their interests or needs.

Every year is different as the program is adjusted to meet the requirements of that year’s students. The students come from many different countries and academic skill sets. They may be male or female, old or young, affluent or poor, but no matter how different they are, they share the common desire to learn about and become part of our

American society. Like all of those who came before us, they have come for a better future for themselves and their families.

Those of us who work in the program are greatly enriched by our interactions with these students. If you would like to join the teaching team, please contact Pat Conrad. Assisting one of our returning teachers is a great way to get involved.

If you have a neighbor, a friend, or acquaintance who would like to improve his or her English skills, please encourage them to stop by on September 3rd to find out more about the program.

The route this year is a 2.8 mile loop, beginning and ending at Fairfax Presbyterian Church. Ample free parking is available at the church. The route is stroller and wheelchair friendly. Pets on leashes are welcome. More information to come.

Adult Volunteers for Youth Workcamp Stephen Crippen | [email protected]

The 2020 summer Youth Workcamp trip is looking for adult chaperons and an adult to head up the trip. Please contact Stephen if you have any interest in this wonderful youth and outreach program. More details about when and where to come.

PARISH NEWS

St. Andrew’s Endowment Fund Bob Heyer | [email protected]

St. Andrew’s Endowment Fund welcomes your gifts and bequests to continue its mission to fulfill God’s work. Your gift or bequest to the Endowment Fund will ensure St. Andrew’s ministries and mission programs continue—even beyond your lifetime. Through gifts to the Endowment Fund, a donor may memorialize those loved ones who cared deeply about the future of St. Andrew’s and its ministries. Gifts of any size can be given at any time and may provide the donor with tax benefits. For more information, you may contact members of the St. Andrew’s Endowment Board: Bob Heyer Chairman, Andrew Guccione, Lisa Rollo, Hal Hendrick, and Alice Redman.

St. Andrew’s Flower Guild Martha Turner | [email protected]

Your monetary gifts given towards the altar flowers in thanksgiving for or memory of your family and friends are the financial backbone of the Flower Guild. We rely on those donations in order to provide beautiful flower arrangements for the worship services each week. Help us by remembering the special events in your life through a donation to the Flower Guild. Envelopes for donations can be found on the bulletin board next to the church office.

Car Decals Emily Nein | [email protected]

Back in 2013 we offered car magnets of the St. Andrew’s logo. Since then, many have been lost to weather, time, and car washes. It seems that cars are not made with as much metal as they used to be. With that in mind, we are happy to offer new car decals of the logo! These vinyl stickers are easy to apply and remove from your car, but they will not re-stick once removed. The stickers are located in an envelope on the bulletin board to the left of the church office. We are asking for a $1 donation per sticker to help cover the cost.

A Challenge Amy Dutton | [email protected]

School is back in session. Leaves are starting to fall. These are signs that our new program year is about to start. This is a perfect time to think about your community—your neighbors, your coworkers, your gym buddies—and think about who might benefit by being a part of St. Andrew’s. Who might need a place to (re)connect with God? Who might be looking for a place to serve the Burke area and beyond? Who might need a church home? You probably won’t know the answers to these questions unless you ask!

I challenge you all to invite just one person to join us here at St. Andrew’s. We have so many options: two services on Sunday, our re-envisioned Saturday service, and our new quarterly Messy Church which will begin its trial this month. As our presiding bishop has said, we are in the “God” business. Let’s spread the word!

Remember – St. Andrew’s is a place to worship, serve, and belong!

Nursery/Pre-K Assistant Teacher Amy Dutton | [email protected]

We are looking for someone to fill the role of Assistant Teacher for the Nursery and Pre-K classes during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service. This person would act as a floater between the two classes, assisting whichever class is in need of another adult.

$14/hour. Would work 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. in the summer and 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. during program year. Must be 18 years of age, and First Aid/CPR certified is a plus. Work with young children in a church environment while parents attend services.

Acolytes Needed Jess Speaker & Ted Burkhalter | [email protected]

St. Andrew’s is in sore need of replacements for three acolytes who departed this summer (including one of only two boys in the church who participated). Please consider volunteering. It is a minimal time commitment, and we will train you. Speak to Jess Speaker or Ted Burkhalter after services, or contact the church office. Any high school or middle school student is eligible. Thanks!

2019/2020 Formation Year Jane Girondo & Christie Dasher | [email protected]

Welcome back to Sunday school! We have been busy preparing for a fantastic year and look forward to welcoming everyone back this month. Be sure to register your children so we can plan for the needed classes and teachers. Forms are available on the church website or on the table outside of the Sunday School/Amy Dutton’s office. They may be returned in the pouch on the bulletin board or to Emily Nein in the church office.

Learning Center (Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten) and Godly Play begin their formation year on September 8th. Classes will be held during the 10:00 a.m. service only to allow all to enjoy the Kickoff BBQ luncheon. Sunday School classes (1st-12th grade) will begin on September 15th after the 10:00 a.m. service.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED FOR THE 2019/20 SCHOOL YEAR

We need help with sharing the stories and lessons of our faith with the children and youth of our church. This endeavor is staffed by volunteers with the exception of the lead teachers in the Nursery and Pre-K classes. It amounts to approximately 35 total volunteers every Sunday. Please give prayerful consideration to serving St. Andrew’s in this manner. Please contact Jane and Christie if you are interested in volunteering or have questions.

SEPTEMBER 7 & 8, 2019

Burke Fall Festival Amy Dutton | [email protected]

St. Andrew’s will again have a booth at the Burke Fall Festival. Our goal is to spread the word about our great church, preschool, and congregation. The festival is located at the Conservancy Festival Grounds, 6060 Burke Centre Parkway, Burke, and will be open on Saturday, September 7th from 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 8th from 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. If you are planning on attending the festival, please stop by and say hello! We could also use a few volunteers to staff the tent throughout the day. Talk to Amy Dutton if you are interested in helping.

Adult Choir Aaron Goen | [email protected]

The Adult Choir has just begun rehearsals for this season, and we need YOU! If you are in high school or older, we would love to have you join us! The Adult Choir is a fun and dedicated ministry that’s primary aim is to enliven and inspire the congregational singing in worship. From week to week, we find how we as a choir are greater than the sum of our individual voices. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7:45–9:30 p.m. We have a short rehearsal on Sunday mornings from 9:00–9:45 a.m., and we also sing for special services like Evensong, Christmas Eve, and Maundy Thursday. If you are interested in checking us out, please talk to a choir member, or Director of Music, Aaron Goen.

Thanksgiving. Additional ornaments will be available for purchase after they come in, but there will be limited quantities available. Ministry Fair Emily Nein | [email protected]

St. Andrew’s is a place where all can worship, serve, and belong. Part of that belonging is taking part in some of the many different programs St. Andrew’s has to offer. If you want to help the community, you can join one of our many Outreach programs, ranging from FACETS Hot Meals program to helping with Youth Workcamp. If you are looking for a group of people to chat and hang out with, our Fellowship programs have got you covered. If you are more interested in helping behind the scenes, there are dozens of ways you can help make St. Andrew’s the best place it can be.

If any of this has piqued your interest, stop by our Ministry Fair in the Parish Hall after the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, September 15th. Leaders from the various programs will be available with information about their group/project/event and able to answer your questions. Come learn about what we have to offer and see how you can be a part of our church family.

Messy Church Amy Dutton | [email protected]

You may have heard people talking about Messy Church and been wondering what exactly that is! Messy Church is a way for all ages to join in experiencing fun and faith-formative activities. It is about creating spaces for God's Holy Spirit to work. It is church—but not as you know it. It is for people to come to God as they are—with their messy lives—together in communion. It is a relaxed, welcoming place for all ages to re-connect with each other and with God. It begins with an activity for all ages, followed by a short church service with a homily (often Godly Play-esque) for the whole family, and it culminates with a group meal.

St. Andrew's is going to have a 3-month trial run of Messy Church. The dates are all Sunday evenings: September 22nd, October 20th, and December 1st at 5:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Please join us as we explore this new form of worship! There will be a sign up sheet outside Amy Dutton's office so we know how many people plan to attend.

Newcomers’ Café Amy Dutton | [email protected]

If you started attending St. Andrew's in the past year, or if you just feel like a newcomer, please join us for a special coffee hour in the Multi-Purpose Room on Sunday, September 22nd, after the 10:00 a.m. service. There will be members of the Vestry and people from various ministries to answer any questions you might have and help you feel at home here! We hope to see you there!
