Greek organizations host TOMS Shoes fundraiser

On April 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Alpha Phi Omega fraternity and SISTUHS Incorporated will host their 2nd Annual One Day Without Shoes event. Jonathon Martinez, junior English major and one of the event’s organizers, said One Day Without Shoes is sponsored by TOMS Shoes, a non-profit organization with an initiative that donates a pair of shoes to needy children overseas when customers purchase their brand. “This is NSU’s way of delivering the same message,” he said. Peter Finley, associate professor of sports and recreation created a Facebook page to publicize his group, Teacher for Travyvon. The group, which is made up of teachers across South Florida, will wear hoodies to work on Friday, April 6.

walkathon, students and faculty will walk through the Don Taft University Center from the first floor to the second floor without shoes or wearing only socks. “The walkathon is to help spread awareness, for students to get engaged and have the community come together,” he said. Alpha Phi Omega hosted the event last year with the aim of making it an NSU tradition. Martinez said the fraternity’s members are excited.Each person has a pair of TOMS and they want to help students purchase a pair also. He said they will be offering incentives for people who participate in the event. “We have a discount code for them to purchase a pair of TOMS.

Once they come to the event, they can purchase a pair at the purchasing table,” he said. Zach Conaway, NSU alumnus, said he will support the event because it’s for a good cause. “Anything you can do to help out someone else is always a good thing regardless of what you’re doing or what it is for,” he said. “If you’re helping someone else get a small improvement in their life, then it’s a good thing.” Martinez hopes One Day Without Shoes will help students take a step that makes a difference. “It’s important for everyone to understand that there are people in different countries who don’t have the same opportunities as we do,

especially children. Children should have as much as they need to develop and since some of them don’t have shoes, we need to try our best to help them,” he said.

Group formed by NSU professor to wear hoodies for Trayvon Martin

On April 6, Peter Finley, associate professor of sports and recreation will wear a hoodie to campus in support of seeking justice for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the unarmed south Florida teen who was shot and killed while visiting his father in a Sanford neighborhood last month. Finley’s gesture is a part of an initiative by Teachers for Trayvon, a group he developed with the help of his wife, a professor at Barry University, after seeing the publicized photo of Miami Heat players in hoodies to support Martin on March 23. “I want my students to know that I stand for justice and I’m troubled by the apparent widespread fear of young people,” he said. “Our students, particularly at a diverse school like NSU, should know that professors see beyond their race, religion, and clothing choices and are focused on them as individuals, so full of hope, promise and potential.”

Trayvon Martin protesters ransack Miami WalgreensOn March 24, North Miami Beach Senior High School students ransacked a Walgreens convenience store after walking out in protest of the controversial shooting of Trayvon Martin, 17. Martin was shot and killed in a Sanford, Fla. neighborhood by George Zimmerman, a member of the community’s neighborhood watch. Surveillance video shows a large group of students running through the store. Police estimate that 80-100 students stormed in, resulting in $150 worth of damage and stolen merchandise. Police also said some of the students dropped their IDs on the way out of the store.

NSU’s College of Dental Medicine offers services to low-income familiesOn April 17, the College of Dental Medicine will give free dental service to children from low-income families in an event called “Give Kids A Smile Day.” The event will provide services such as X-rays, exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and restorations to children aged 2-18. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at NSU Health Care Centers’ dental clinic, located at the corner of 30th Street and University Drive in Davie. Last year, NSU’s College of Dental Medicine provided $125,000 worth of dental care to children. This year, there will be more than 200 NSU dental students and faculty volunteers at event. In addition, face painters, magicians, music, the giant “Timmy the Tooth” mascot, and free toothbrushes will be available for the children.

Fourth annual juried student exhibitionApril 4-27, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Performing and Visual Arts will host an exhibition of juried student artwork. The exhibition will showcase a variety of two- and three-dimensional artwork, including prints, digital art, paintings, photographs, drawings, and sculptural works. JetBlue pilot suspended after troubling behaviorClayton Osbon, captain of JetBlue Flight 191 heading from New York to Las Vegas, was subdued by crew members and passengers after allegedly screaming and trying to get back into the cockpit after his co-pilot locked him out. His behavior prompted an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas on March 27. Osbon is suspended pending further investigation. Officials said he is receiving medical care under FBI custody. Osbon has worked for JetBlue for 12 years.

When senior psychology major, Kevin Murray, first heard of the idea, he thought it was a great one. Murray said he plans to support the cause by wearing a hoodie on April 6 as well. “I really thought it was a good idea to raise awareness on the issue,” said Murray. Finley and his wife have created a Facebook page called Teachers for Trayvon in an effort to spread awareness about their plans. He said Barry University will be having

several events, and professors from St. Thomas University have given positive feedback towards the group’s initiatives. Finley said he would like to see his colleagues at NSU participate as well. “I know many colleagues across campus are as troubled by this as I am, and they also want to demonstrate that they want to see justice in this case,” he said. Finley said he feels it’s extremely

important that students know their professors care about them. “Except for parents, nobody spends more time with and invests more in America’s young people than educators. We should send a message that we won’t stand by and quietly watch them be gunned down,” he said. 2012 GOP primary midpoint review

Katariina Rosenblatt is a graduate student in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She loves going to church, reading the Bible and believes her personal relationship with Jesus Christ is what saved her from human trafficking and domestic violence. Her hobbies include writing, volunteering, and working with at-risk youths. Katariina hopes to host an NSU symposium about human trafficking in the fall and has a web site, www.thereishopeforme.org, to help victims. She lives by the quote, “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care” by Zig Ziglar. I was born and raised in Miami but my family moved around a lot due to domestic violence issues. To gain peace, my family and I stayed at a hotel on Miami Beach. While at the hotel pool, an older girl approached me to give me some “sisterly advice.” What seemed to be an innocent encounter soon took a very wrong turn. I was solicited for sale at the age of 13. However, the sale went bad. I was kidnapped, drugged and left for dead on an abandoned road in North Miami Beach. This started my encounter with the dark world of human trafficking, right here in the United States — right here within our own borders of South Florida. The term used now is Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking, but back then

The delegate countThe first of the four GOP candidates to receive 1,144 delegates throughout the primary season will become the Republican Party Nominee in the 2012 general election. Here is where the current delegates stand:

March madness GOP style Nationwide, there has been talk of a brokered convention. This (which has never occurred in the history of American politics), would happen if no candidate has 1,144 delegates after the Utah primary on June 26. An article published in the New York Times on March 17 titled “All Odds Aside, G.O.P. Girding for Floor Fight” reported that if Romney began securing major wins after the Puerto Rico primary, he could possibly have enough delegates to clinch the nomination before June 26. The Illinois primary on March 20, yet again, demonstrated that the GOP nomination is a tight two-man race between Romney and Santorum. Romney not only walked away with a vast majority of Illinois’ delegates, he also captured 107,704 more votes than Santorum. And after Gingrich’s fourth place finish, with 8 percent of the vote, calls for him to suspend his campaign may increase.

Remaining primaries There are 22 primaries remaining, and 1,099 delegates to be captured by the four GOP candidates. While all primaries are important, here is a review of the ones that, if any candidates win, could change the game:

California—172 delegates at stake The California primary on June 5 is important because it is a winner take all state. This means that whoever wins the popular vote in California will automatically earn all of the state’s delegates.

Texas—155 delegates at stake While Texas portions it delegates in accordance with the popular vote, it is duly important because many pundits and bloggers have been talking about a major Santorum victory in the state because former GOP presidential and current Texas Governor Rick Perry has officially endorsed Santorum. The Texas primary will take place on May 29.

Pennsylvania—72 delegates at stake Much like the Gingrich win in Georgia and the Romney wins in Massachusetts and Michigan, it is assumed that because Santorum served as a U.S. senator for the state of Pennsylvania that he will win a vast majority of the state’s delegates on primary day on April 24.

Rick Santorum: ricksantorum.com With decisive wins in states like Colorado, Mississippi and Alabama, Santorum has demonstrated that he has the ability to energize the GOP base. The self-proclaimed social conservative in the race, Santorum has come under pressure for his staunch stance on abortion and gay marriage, and has incited backlash from the left because of his “women shouldn’t serve in the military” styled comments.

Newt Gingrich: newt.org With only two wins in Georgia and South Carolina, there have been numerous calls for Gingrich to suspend his campaign, but he is determined to go to the end. An article published in The Washington Examiner on March 4 titled “Santorum: I’ll beat Romney if Gingrich drops out,” Santorum makes the argument that if Gingrich were to drop out of the race, the anti-Romney vote could be consolidated and he could capture the nomination. For now, however, Gingrich remains in the race.

Ron Paul: ronpaul2012.com With no wins and with a meager 50 delegates in his column, Ron Paul intends to stay in the race until the convention. An article published in The Huffington Post on March 12 entitled “Ron Paul Wins Popular Vote in U.S. Virgin Islands GOP Caucus” explains that because of the caucus rules in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Romney was awarded a majority of the delegates in the territory’s caucus, while Ron Paul won the popular vote.

With all four candidates strong in their conviction to remain in the race, the nomination process is sure to go to the convention, unless Romney receives the number of delegates necessary to secure the nomination. The Republican National Convention will take place in Tampa Bay, Fla. at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, from Aug. 27 to Aug. 30.

Mitt Romney: mittromney.com Despite the fact that Romney has a 268 delegate count lead on Santorum, has the support of a vast majority of the GOP Establishment, and has captured the popular vote in states like Florida (46.4%), Ohio (37.9%) and Virginia (59.4%), there is still a general conversation about his ability to energize the GOP base. Romney’s “I don’t care about the poor” and “my wife drives two Cadillac’s” comments have given Americans the impression that he is unable to connect with the average American.

it was just plain old child abuse. As a young teen, I was groomed over the course of a month by a human trafficking prostitution ring that networked throughout the hotel my family and I visited often. Coming from a single parent home with abuse in my background, it was only a matter of time before I would become the target of human traffickers. They knew who to send in that would be just the right lure to snatch their bait. An older female, probably lured in herself at some point by a trafficker, turned into one of their recruiters. A 65-year-old man in the hotel was my first ‘buyer.’ He was willing to pay a high premium for me — a young virgin. At this time, I remembered the words that another older gentleman once told me at a Billy Graham crusade when I was nine. He said, “God loves you and will never leave you or forsake you!” It was there in the hotel room that I prayed for divine intervention as my trafficker negotiated my sales price with the would-be John. I didn’t even know that I was for sale. The going rate for an American virgin girl in the U.S. back then was $550. Girls who I work with now balk at the price because rates have gone down considerably in the last 20 years. I guess we, as a society, have lost the value of innocence. The fact that there is even a price tag on it, or a market for it at all, is just wrong. I was lured far away from my hotel and my mom, but she

eventually found me and we were reunited. However, knowing I was bought and sold confused me as to my own value and self worth. It was only a matter of time before I found myself in a similar predicament. I was lured into a different human trafficking ring again by a fake friend at my middle school. There was an older male trafficking young girls into a brothel apartment. The escape this time was not so easy. I got caught up in the life and was drugged for their gain, but eventually I found freedom. Something inside me, though, changed. I was different. I was angry! Why had this happened to me twice? Why hadn’t anyone rescued me from this danger? Where were the people who were supposed to protect me? I would go on to be exploited more times as I had not received any type of counseling or help to prevent further abuse. Freedom was not cheap and the addiction to drugs that this group left me with gave me yet another vulnerability to traffickers. It took a long time to finally be free of drugs and traffickers for good. At the end of a very long road of drugs, exploitation and an abusive relationship, I not only have a bachelor’s degree in human resources management, but an advanced law degree in intercultural human rights and am now completing my final year at NSU for my Ph.D. in conflict analysis and resolution. I also speak at universities, schools, jails, and group homes in foster care and let children and

adults know about the dangers of human trafficking right here in South Florida. I have founded a non-profit organization called There Is HOPE For Me, Inc., where I meet with groups of survivors so they, too, can find healing, opportunity, purpose and empowerment. I have developed tools that are being used throughout the country to aid law enforcement in properly identifying victims of human trafficking in the U.S. I am a part of the South Florida Human Trafficking Task

Force and a national Speaker’s Bureau for Human Trafficking Survivors called the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation, which hopes to share school and university curriculum to those who want to engage in the fight against modern day slavery. My hope is to continue to inform people about human trafficking and write a book about my life story to help as many young people as I possibly can and make a difference. I know if there is hope for me, then there is hope for anybody.

Is there a more impressive specimen in the world of soccer today than Lionel Messi? This was obviously a rhetorical question because the only logical answer is “no”. Although he might be the smallest man on the pitch, his feats and capabilities are astronomical. Even Real Madrid fans, like me, can only sit back and marvel at this magnificent player. Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, and Wayne Rooney are all exceptionally gifted soccer players, but it is Messi who has established himself as the alpha male in this sport. On March 20, Messi became the all-time goal scoring leader in Barcelona history. Oh yeah. The man is only 24-years-old. This isn’t just some second division club we’re talking about. This is Barcelona, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. This club has featured some of the all-time greats, such as Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, and Ronaldo. Now this begs the question,

Sebastian Telfair was considered one of the most talented players to enter the NBA draft straight out of high school.

On March 20, the golf team finished second at the Bobcat Invitational and finished first at the St. Edwards Invitational on March 6. Due to the team’s strong performance, it was announced on March 21 that the team received the number one ranking in the nation. Head coach, Garrett Runion, said the team was very excited when they heard of the news. He said the team’s confidence is growing with every tournament, and he believes they are capable of maintaining the number one ranking. “I feel the team will handle having the number one ranking very well, because they have wanted it for a while and now that they have it I think they will thrive with it,” said Runion. Sophomore golfer, Ben Taylor, said the team has been consistent, because they have finished in the top five in every competition. He said being in contention in every

10 most overhyped athletes10. JaMarcus Russell, quarterback, Oakland Raiders (2007-2009): There’s a lot of vitriol towards the former LSU star. In truth, his numbers don’t help his case. Drafted in 2007 as the #1 overall pick, and sporting a record of 18-23 as a starter, Russell mustered a mere 60-65 in QB ratings. We’re talking about a guy who had one of the strongest arms in football (known to have heaved a ball 60 yards...on a knee) but just couldn’t pan out to even half of all the expectations in the pros.

9. Greg Oden, center, Portland Trailblazers, (2007-3rd quarter buzzer, game 1 of season) Another player drafted in 2007, Oden was Ohio State’s prodigal post-player. He had the moves, the numbers, and most importantly, the beard. Here’s the problem, hoop fans saw less of moves and digits and more of the beard. Greg Oden was the #1 overall pick in 2007’s NBA draft. Picked up by Portland, he was drafted just in front of Kevin Durant. The fact of the matter is that Oden’s actual performance cannot be criticized. I mean, you literally can’t criticize his play, because he hardly ever played. At 7’, slated to take on the center duties of guarding NBA bigs, Oden may have suffered too many injuries to play, but there was a high likelihood from the onset that he was doomed to fail.

8. Nolan Ryan, pitcher, Texas Rangers (1968-1993) By an alarming amount of baseball fans, Ryan is considered among the top three hurlers in baseball history. This is the same sport that boasts a history teeming with pitchers like Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and Roger Clemens, to which Ryan holds not even a scented candle. This is also the same sport that has an award specifically tailored for pitchers, The Cy Young Award (another pitcher that blew Ryan away), of which Ryan has none. 2,795 walks and 292 career losses in 616 starts, no wonder the re is an empty space in his trophy case. No-hitters are nothing to sneeze at (especially when you can boast seven of them). But with a baffling walk rate and a wins record just floating above .500, Ryan is pretty far down the list.

7. Joe Namath, quarter back, NY Jets (1965-1977) Ask anyone who lives even remotely close to New York. Heck, ask a resident of Connecticut: “Is Joe Namath among the greats?” Unfortunately, you won’t get many “No’s” (except for that one Jets fan who believes that Sanchez is, in fact, the second coming of Namath). Unfortunately, despite Namath’s Super Bowl antics, the numbers are uninspiring. In an AFL that wasn’t exactly loaded with defensive back talent (not to mention the much less complicated defensive schemes), Namath produced 173 touchdowns to 220 interceptions. Essentially, you’re looking at a QB who’s a 50.1

Messi takes a backseat to no one in this era. Since his debut with Barcelona in 2004, he has helped the team win the Champions League title three times and has won La Liga five times. In addition, he’s been named World Player of the Year three years running. The only component missing on his extravagant resume is a World Cup trophy, and that will ultimately be the deciding factor on whether or not he is the greatest of all time. Personally, I’m just glad to witness such greatness. At first glance, Messi may not look intimidating, but there isn’t anyone feared more on the pitch. Let’s not forget, he may still have at least another ten years of magic left in the tank, and that my friends, is wondrous. It’s Messi.

6. Apollo Ohno, olympic speed-skater (1992) Now this one just frustrates me. Ohno was the biggest thing since bottled water because he excelled for a short period of time in a minor sport. His short-lived “dominance” was matched only in the brief relevance of a sport that was only even allowed on television since 1992 (allowed because it bored to death in its adaptation of NASCAR, in tights, on frozen water). Ohno was even placed on the cover of a Sports Illustrated issue. Two gold medals, masses of sponsors, and an enviable name, outside of that: Nada.

5. Jeremy Lin, point guard, New York Knicks, (2011-present) I almost feel bad for placing Lin on this list because he’s just an unassuming Ivy Leaguer who became fodder to the cannon of New York sports media. The Knicks are often known as the Mecca of basketball (personally, I prefer The Jerusalem of Joke Journalism), and the world’s attention was centered on the Knicks’ young star for the short time when Lin captured imaginations. As a starter, Lin is looking at an impressive 14.6 ppg and 6.4 apg. A hot start of 24 and 13 in the same categories fizzled down to the current averages. Lin’s positives are easily offset by an alarming three turnovers per game (awful for the head of an NBA offense) and the fact that he is literally the product of a happy-go-lucky, offensive-minded system in New York. Again, Lin is among the many victims of the hype machine that is sports journalism in New York. That being said, he’s vastly overrated for a point guard who turns the ball over and looks often as if he’s lost as the game is progressing.

4. Ryan Leaf, quarterback, San Diego Chargers/Dallas Cowboys, 1999-2001 If I told you that there’s this QB that San Diego drafted as the number 1 overall pick, over Tennessee’s Peyton Manning, would

you be able to think of his name? For those of you who remember it, I can almost hear your groans as you read this. Leaf was Washington State’s heralded quarterback going into the 1998 NFL draft. Leaf and Peyton Manning were considered 1A and 1B as far as top picks. Fourteen touchdowns, 36 interceptions, and a 50 QB rating later, and you’re probably still groaning.

3. Sebastian Telfair, point guard, Phoenix Suns (2004-present) To have this guy ranked so high on this list seems odd as very few even

recall his name. That, folks, is exactly why he’s the third most overhyped player on this list. Consider this, Telfair was (and still is) the second highest high school scorer in New York’s basketball history, bumping metaphorical shoulders with Earl “The Pearl” Monroe. Also consider that Telfair was one of two players spotlighted on SLAM magazine’s cover, stating “The Takeover.” Who was the other guy? None other than LeBron Raymone James. That’s right. Though much like Lin in that he was essentially victimized by the New York hype machine, Telfair was once compared to James in regards to potential in the pros. Telfair opted to enter the NBA draft out of high school (back when that was still ok) and was selected 13th overall by the Portland Trailblazers. The rest is unfortunate, injury-riddled history.

2. Fredy Adu, mid-fielder, Philadelphia Union (2003) If anything explains the expectations placed on Adu, it’s this: there’s a widely known picture of Adu posing next to the great Pele. Pele in this picture is planting a peck on Adu’s cheek. Pele had once said that Adu was “…given the gift to play football.” Obviously he means soccer, but I digress. Adu was so highly touted that he made his MLS debut at the tender age of 14. 14-year-old Adu was most likely balancing practice alongside seasoned veterans with his Algebra homework. Unfortunately, Adu

struggled to adjust to complex formations not only in the MLS but overseas. There’s no question that futbol has never seen a young man so loudly heralded as “the next Pele” as much as young Adu was.

1. Darko Milicic, center, Minnesotta Timberwolves, (2003-present) There a few reasons why Darko ranks higher on this list than the likes of Adu: First, he was the 2nd pick in what is widely considered the greatest NBA draft class of all time. Picture this: draft stock (omitting the obvious numero uno in Lebron James): Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh. Those names all followed Milicic. The Detroit Pistons skipped out on those three (even Chris Kaman would have made more sense as a #2 pick...I’m serious!). Darko was not only mired by several injury-struck campaigns in the NBA, he also showed some unflattering numbers. The Serbian seven-footer sported a ppg average that peaked at 8.8 back in the 2010-2011 season. Despite his 1.5 to 2.0 blocks per game average, Milicic showed a timid nature at a position that prohibited it and a league that could smell it. To be the pick immediately following the man widely considered the NBA’s best player as of right now, Milicic held on his shoulders the expectation of truly, truly great things. Unfortunately, he hasn’t even come within the same zip code as them and very likely never will.

On March 16 junior swimmer, Erin Black, captured an individual title in the 500 freestyle event at the NCAA championships n Mansfield, Texas. This was the first national title in the program’s history. Black said she was disappointed with how she swam in the 1,000 meter event and was determined to do better in the 500. She felt she got off to a slow start in the 500 but was able to pick it up towards the end. “I talked to my coach, and I was just going to swim as fast as I could and see what the outcome was. I kind of came back in the last 150 yards and won. It was a good win. It was exciting,” said Black. Head coach, Hollie Bonewit-Cron, said Black’s victory was a result of her hard work and determination. Bonewit-Cron said she was honored to be the one who presented Black with her award, and she is looking forward to continuing to coach her. “Erin has been great to coach this year as she discovered a desire

to be great,” said Bonewit-Cron. “She is extremely coachable and I am looking forward to working with her this spring and summer as well as next year.” Black was appreciative of the support she received from everyone at nationals. She said her parents were there cheering her on, and Bonewit-Cron was also there to congratulate her after the race. “She ran over behind the blocks after my race, and I was too tired to get out. She said, ‘Are you going to get out and give me a hug?’ I was like yeah, give me a sec. I was super tired, but she was just really happy for me,” said Black. Black felt her individual title was great for the swimming program because of the recognition and exposure it brings to NSU. She was proud to represent the program and credited the coaching staff for her growth this year. Black plans to try and make it to Olympic trials this summer.

strikeouts and has surpassed the NSU single-season record of 217.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Mile theatre present “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Tickets start at $46. This musical features songs by the well-known composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. This play is a fun, modern, and colorful adaptation of the biblical story of Jacob and his 12 sons. The musical starts with the children’s youth choir singing their way up the aisle of the auditorium. Once on stage, they are greeted by the Narrator (played by Amy Miller Brennan), who tells the tale of a young man named Joseph and the power of his dreams. The children remain seated on benches on either side of the stage throughout the show. Their presence is subtle, but the moments where they are incorporated into the action of the production, make for a delightful atmosphere. This also allows the audience to see the story through the eyes of the children. In the story, Joseph, the youngest and favorite son of Jacob, is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, who then deceive their father in thinking Joseph is dead. Once into Egypt, Joseph is thrown into jail after a misunderstanding with his master, the Potipher. In time, Joseph’s ability to tell the future by interpreting dreams garners the Pharaoh’s attention. Joseph is released from prison and becomes one of the highest

Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus: Which one is right for you?

ranking officers in Egypt. Years later, after suffering from famine, Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt to ask for help from an official not knowing that his true identity is Joseph. Joseph reveals himself only after testing their loyalty to one another by falsely accusing one of them of theft. In the end of the story Jacob and all of his sons are, once again, happily reunited. As the narrator, Miller Brennan adds a sweetness and animation to her character, and not to mention that amazing voice that would surely lift the spirits of anyone fortunate enough to listen to it. She hits every note with ease and remains present throughout the show even when she is not a main part of the scene. Joseph Canfield is incredible playing the role of Joseph. He has a way of making the story fun and, with his lovely singing voice, allows the audience to understand and feel the characters’ emotions. There also seems to be a growth for the character during the play from the younger brother, to a sold slave, and eventually to a high position as one of Pharaoh’s officials. Canfield demonstrates this growth flawlessly. The songs are fabulously composed and very well sung. The costumes are brightly colored and fun, and the entire cast makes this a show one that should not be missed.

While many a political film has been made, there are very few worth watching. And even fewer accurately capture a political ideology, the political situation as it occurred, or a well written and executed political experiment, or some crazy combination of the three. With a coffee in my hand and a Hunger Games pin on my shirt, I sat down for the midnight premiere of “The Hunger Games” on March 23. I had been awake since 7:30 a.m., I rushed to the theater after my class got out at 10 p.m., and I had to work the next morning. If this movie wasn’t good, I would’ve been tired, angry and extremely disappointed, but fortunately for the people around me, it was well worth the lack of sleep. “The Hunger Games” is based on the book of the same name and is set in the future, where North America has collapsed after a revolt and been replaced by Panem. Panem is a country divided into 12 districts and one Capitol. In order to keep all the districts in line and prevent another revolt, the Capitol arranges a yearly Hunger Games, where one boy and one girl from each district are selected to fight to the death, until one victor remains. In the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers for her younger sister, Prim, to fight in the games. She and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), the male participant from District 12, are the stars of the movie as they fight to survive. There are many films adapted

For those who have not read the book (shame on you), you will not get lost in the storyline. The 142 minute-long film was able to stay true to the book, while adding as much detail as possible. This provided the best of both worlds for both the Hunger Games fanatic and mere audience member. Having taken two film classes, I was pleased at how well executed the movie was. It’s geared towards teens and young adults, but the movie didn’t feel like a Disney version of action adventure. The fighting, killing, fires, wild animals, etc. all felt real. In one scene, while the participants are in the arena of the Hunger Games, Katniss cuts down a branch holding a tracker-jacker beehive (think bees on steroids). During this scene, I was literally cringing in my seat. I felt like I was getting stung on my hands and neck. Because of the cinematography and effects, I also felt disoriented after being “stung.” The audience didn’t just watch Katniss fall over and not know if she was dreaming or in reality — we experienced the disorientation with her. We experienced the forest becoming blurry, we fell on the ground with

her and we felt her confusion when she was unsure if what happened was reality or an illusion. Throughout the movie, the audience experienced subjective point-of-view shots, hand-held camera effects, and quick cutting between shots. I felt like I was a part of the Hunger Games (well, that could have been the caffeine). My one complaint about the movie is it didn’t feel like a love story. Now, before you think I’m just a girl who wanted to see a happily ever after, I want you to know I actually read the book (all

three in fact). In the Hunger Games book, Peeta isn’t just a love-struck boy who has a crush on Katniss. He was willing to lay down his life for her. He was willing to die for her. He loved her. And at moments, Katniss realized she loved him too. Katniss was struggling with another battle — a battle of love — but the film ignored that. The film made it seem like Katniss loved Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and that Gale was who she thought about (he is definitely swoon-worthy). Hopefully, in the next two films, Peeta will man up

and look like he deserves the girl on fire and the audience will be able to watch the love story unfold. After watching this movie, I can happily tell you guys, this movie isn’t just for girls. There is a slight love triangle, two hot guys and a heroine (girl power!), but the movie is also about children killing other children. The movie didn’t tone down the violence. We saw children from 11 districts turn into killing machines to become the lone survivor. So, guys and gals this movie is for both of you and may the odds be ever in your favor.

I highly recommend Netflix for their instant service alone, which costs $10 a month.

Amazon Instant Video Well known to Internet shopping enthusiasts, Amazon.com offers the eager consumer just about anything imaginable. From food to books to clothes and now instant video; recently Amazon started offering a service known as Amazon Instant Video. This service allows customers to buy or rent titles from their online library and watch them instantly though their computer. Unlike other Amazon services, there is no “hard cover” product, rather once you buy or rent a TV show or movie it will

appear in your virtual library where you may watch it until your rental ends or whenever you wish to own the title. Amazon Instant Video’ selection is quite varied and titles are updated constantly. For those with an Amazon Prime membership, they can obtain instant access to several movies and TV shows. However, one must still pay for the more recent titles. The costs will add up if you rent several movies since there isn’t a flat fee. Instead you pay per view unless you buy to own. The costs are affordable for one or two movies a month, but beyond that it gets pricy fast with most recent films costing $4 and older ones costing $2.

Hulu Plus I loved Hulu before it became Hulu Plus. After my free trial ended I stopped going to Hulu.com. That said, Hulu Plus might be the best option for college students with busy schedules that regularly conflict with TV schedules. The content provided

by Hulu is quite extensive and up to date. Its $8 a month price tag is also rather affordable. In many ways Hulu Plus is perfect for college students, or anyone with a busy schedule, but I miss when it was just normal Hulu which was free to everyone. The best part of Hulu is its content; it offers next day showings of several TV shows. However, without Hulu Plus your limited the normally the first five episodes in a season

5. “The Candidate” (1972) With the GOP primaries in full swing and the general election to soon follow, “The Candidate,” a film that examines the way candidates present themselves to constituents, is something that anyone planning to vote must watch. Directed by Michael Ritchie, written by Jeremy Larner and starring Robert Redford, Peter Boyle and Melvyn Douglas, “The Candidate” is a look at how elections transformed in the 1970s after the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

4. “Enemy of the State” (1998) An interesting political conversation about the independence of the individual in society and the role of the government in the affairs of the individual, “Enemy of the State” is brilliant political film directed by Tony Scott, written by David Marconi and starring Will Smith, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight. This is an excellent film for those who are interested in the modern day applications of the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution (unreasonable searches and seizures) to daily life.

2. “J. Edgar” (2011) Based on a true story, “J. Edgar” is a film not just about the tenure of J. Edgar Hoover, commissioner of the FBI for more than 50 years, but an insightful examination of the progression of the history of law enforcement in the U.S. Leonardo DiCaprio gives, quite possibly, one of the best performances of his lifetime as J. Edgar Hoover. Written by Dustin Lance Black and directed by Clint Eastwood, “J. Edgar” is a film that those with a keen interest in the criminal justice system should definitely watch.

1. “The Manchurian Candidate” (2004) Directed by Jonathan Demme and written by Daniel Pyne and Dean Georgaris, “The Manchurian Candidate” is perhaps the finest in political satire and political ideology created in modern film history. Closely based on the 1962 version, “The Manchurian Candidate” features a plot about how the desire of the wealthy and successful to attain and retain power lead to a scientific experiment beyond the physical capacity of modern science. To complement the well-written plot are stellar performances by Denzel Washington, Live Schreiber and Meryl Streep.

Brutality seems to have a good way of representing reality, and, sometimes, it takes a few doses to wake people up. Waking people up to the reality of smoking is the goal behind a new anti-tobacco campaign by

U.S Health officials. The new advertisement series called “Tips From Former Smokers,” features paid advertisements and public service announcements designed to encourage smokers to quit and to thwart would-be first timers. The ad series depicts people suffering from illnesses related to smoking. The subjects’ stories tell of the horrors that come with dealing with sickness due to their tobacco use. These ads are designed to help combat the excessive $10.5 billion spent by tobacco companies on marketing.

Now meth and tobacco aren’t really in the same ballpark when compared. In fact, they aren’t even the same sport, but the same techniques used to stop the two should be the same: harsh and real. For too long, anti-drug and tobacco advertisements have danced around the subject by being overly suggestive and flawed, boasting ideologies of “smoking cigarettes won’t make you popular” (uh yeah, but it will kill you, that’s probably important,) and “marijuana will make your dog talk to you” (but he will be disappointed in your

reckless behavior). These ad campaigns don’t even come close to stacking up to the “Meth: Don’t try it once” anti-methamphetamine campaign. The anti-meth commercials (if you haven’t seen one yet) are gruesome depictions of what happens to users of meth. The message is always the same: Negative reactions happen when you do negative actions. This is something any teenager can understand — not that marijuana makes dogs talk to you.

Driving down U.S. 1 is quite a test of your attention span. It is remarkably easy to get distracted, taking in all the visual stimulation that is hurtling past your vehicle at 30 mph. There are big tall buildings to look at, street signs to pay attention to, and traffic to worry about. But a new distracting sidewalk phenomenon has the streets of Hallandale Beach spinning in controversy. Human directionals. Sign flippers. Sign twirlers. Walking signs. Persons dressed like the Statue of Liberty. All these figures are now banned from appearing along the side of the road thanks to the city of Hallandale Beach ordinance that was passed on Jan. 20. The ordinance bans the use of a human as a form of off-site advertisement. The reason for the ban is to make the roads safer for motorists. A city staff report that accompanied the ordinance reasoned its existence saying, “Not only can this type of attention-seeking signage be unsightly, it can also be

extremely dangerous as the intent is to distract driver’s attention.” Hey! Distracted drivers, listen up, you are too distracted. Put down the cell phone and put on the horse blinders because you will likely crash if you see someone twirling a sign for cheap pizza. This preposterous ordinance has sign enthusiasts and business owners up in arms around the state of Florida, and the police are listening. The advertising style may be banned in many cities but, as of yet, no enforcement has taken place. I agree with the law enforcement agencies for not enforcing this ordinance. To do so would be a complete waste of time and tax payers’ money. Jobs are at all time low. If you have a job right now, chances are you are holding on to it for dear life, so why should we be taking them away from these people? Obviously spinning a sign isn’t exactly an entry-level spot on a fast-track towards a glamorous career, but it pays, and for some that is more than enough. The Palm Beach City officials may have a good point though.

Sign spinners, at an extreme, would be a nuisance. Imagine 12 people all spinning signs on a street corner — that’s pure madness. People are bound to rubber neck such a spectacle, which equates to accidents. So in that respect it makes sense. However, I think because sign spinners have become enough of a common place on our streets, most

people already just ignore them. Concern should be taken with this issue but an all out ban is not the answer. Americans need jobs and small businesses need cheap advertising. Drivers getting distracted isn’t a good enough reason to take that away. If you have trouble with driving because you’re easily distracted, you

manned orbital missions for now. Enter SpaceX. A privately funded and privately owned company, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or “SpaceX,” is pushing ahead with in-house designs and plans to outpace NASA and most other governments in the race for reliable and cheap orbital transportation. The Space Shuttle of the past was notoriously prone to exorbitant maintenance costs and disastrous accidents with even the smallest error or accident. SpaceX has planned, designed and constructed their own brand of orbital transports since their founding in 2002. And they work. In 2006, SpaceX was awarded a Commercial Orbital Transportation Services or “COTS” contract by NASA to privately construct and launch orbital spacecraft from U.S. soil. This idea was realized in late 2009, with the launch, orbit and recovery of the COTS Demo Flight 1 mission, making SpaceX the first privately funded company to do so. In mid 2010, NASA awarded SpaceX a contract to develop a crewed orbital shuttle for cargo and personnel transport to and from the International Space Station. The company is, by definition, privately funded. However, via extensive contact with NASA

and the European Space Union, they have opened their launch spacecraft up to the highest bidder. An anonymous customer paid for a radio satellite to be launched in early 2011, and SpaceX is set up to receive official federal funding next year. SpaceX’s first manned launch is currently scheduled for 2015, when the Dragon Spacecraft will have a certified launch escape system, the first of its kind, to prevent loss of life due to mechanical failures or damages. Dragon will also utilize the SpaceX developed “Falcon Heavy” Super Heavy Lift-class rocket booster, the most powerful rocket ever used (in terms of thrust) since the Saturn V boosters used for the Apollo missions. SpaceX also plans to launch its first geostationary satellite in 2013. Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO and CTO, said he plans to have a reliable robotic transport to Mars by 2018. However, Musk claims his ultimate goal is loftier than even that: a permanent, sustainable human presence on the red planet. With the way SpaceX is going, this certainly seems possible.

Street advertising deserves its own corner

probably should be in the backseat with a Game Boy, not behind the wheel. If city officials have a problem with sign spinners they should regulate, not obliterate. So, show your support. Honk if you want to save taxes and turn right for fresh pizza. Sign spinners are here to stay and deserve to annoy motorists; it makes up for being dressed so ridiculously.
