Honors News
Rachel Pigott, a
sophomore in the
Honors Program from
Foley, Alabama, passed
away September 1 from
injuries sustained in a
car accident on her way
back to Montevallo
after spending the
holiday weekend at
home.
She was an
elementary-education
major, a member of
Delta Gamma Sorority,
a Gold Side cheerleader,
and a member of the
Women’s Cross Country
team.
If any students,
faculty, or staff wish to
meet with a counselor,

Services at 665-6245.
Our sincerest
condolences go out to
her family and friends.

Honors Incoming Freshmen:
Move-In & Orientation with Peer Mentors
Honors Program Website’s New Look

Honors freshmen moved in a day early this year. Afterwards, they attended Honors Orientation, where they
met their peer mentors and a few Honors professors. Peer mentors and freshmen participated in
team-building games, resume reflection, and ice breakers.

Honors students began the
semester by attending Float into
Fall on Monday, August 25 at
Hill House.

These students were selected as the 2014-2015 Honors Program Peer Mentors. The Peer Mentors assisted with
Move-In Day and Honors Orientation and are planning several events for this fall such as enjoying Oak
Mountain State Park, catching a play at the Red Mountain Theatre, experiencing varying forms of art at the
Birmingham Museum of Art, and listening to the New Orleans Legends featuring Allen Touissant and the
Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Wright Center.

Sophomore Certificate Updates
The Sophomore Certificate is now called
the Honors Certificate and will be
awarded every Fall for successfully
completing 18 Honors credit hours. The
Spring ceremony will now be exclusively
for diploma recipients.

Headed to an academic conference and
don’t know how to pay for it? Apply for an
Honors Program Student Travel Grant.
You can be awarded up to $500 for travel
for conference participation. Monetary
support will only be available through
reimbursement after your travel is
complete, and all relevant receipts must be
provided with reimbursement request.
