  • Mr. Raines By: Emily Bromley & Kelly Coleman Mr. Raines has been teaching in Penn-Delco school district for ten years. He started teaching his friends about music in middle school and contin-ued to teach his friends in high school and college. Mr. Raines went to a variety of colleges including; East Carolina, which he attended for four years, and West Chester University, where he earned his Master’s degree. He attended St. Joe’s for high school. Mr. Raines went into the music industry because he wanted to teach middle schoolers all about music, and to show everyone that anyone (with raw music ability or not) can play an instrument. Cancer: (June 21-July 22) Your New Year looks very promising! As loyal and sympathetic as you are, you will make some new friends, while keeping your old ones close. Leo: (July 23-August 22) This New Year will be filled with adventure for your wild spirit! Have fun and try to find someone else to share your crazy adventures with! Your year will also be filled with drama between your fellow peers, so try not to get involved or it might ruin your sponta-neous year! Virgo: (August 23-September 22) Your New Year will be great! Filled with fun, friends, and more! But, try not to work so hard or you might not be able to enjoy it! Libra: (September 23-October 22) Your New Year looks as optimistic as you! A: I hope you apologized. If you didn’t, APOLOGIZE! An apology can go a long way to resolving con-flicts. If you did apologize, she may need a little time to calm down. Then maybe apologize again, and explain what you are sorry for. For example, “I’m so sorry I hit you in the face with a snowball. I would never intention-ally do that. I hope you can forgive me because I really value our friendship.” Q: I have a hard time making friends at school. The only person that listens to me is my stuffed snowman name Frosty. What can I do to make some “real” friends? A: I would join an afterschool activ-ity (sport or club). You will find so many interesting people that you actually have something in common

Q: My best friend went snowboarding without me! I don’t want to be mad at her but I can’t help it. How can I con-trol my jealousy? A: Tell your friend that next time she goes snowboarding, if she is allowed to bring a friend, you’d love to go. You can then find out why she didn’t bring you. She may not have been allowed or maybe she didn’t think you’d be interested. But it sounds like the two of you just need to communicate openly with one another a little more.

Q: Over the weekend, my whole neighborhood had a huge snowball fight. During the chaos, I accidently hit my friend in the face with snow. Now she’s mad at me. What can I do?

with. I would leave Frosty at home, though, but that’s just me. Q: I am planning to have a win-ter themed birthday party soon. I have a group of friends but not everyone is getting along. What should I do? A: Special Guest to the Nest: Mr. Maxwell just had a party and had the same issue so he is here to answer this one! Invite everyone in the group. The party may be just what they need to work out their differences. Just because they are having a disagreement now does not mean that they are not going to make up. • A Present to Me By: Julia Smith

I didn’t want to move, but my mom made me. The

three hour drive to our new ranch house was dreadful. It

was already four months into the semester when my mom

told me that we were moving to New Jersey. A new

school, a new house, new people and I am not prepared for

any of it. My mom looks at it as, “a brand new start” but

all I see it as is a giant disappointment. I’m not the one

who needs a new start. Anyway, Christmas is a week away

and I am not even excited for that either. I am starting

school tomorrow and I am still trying to figure out my

game plan for the day. I toured the school yesterday and it

wasn’t anything special. Drab gray walls, boxy school

desks, and stupid gray uniforms that are as dull as the

teachers who work there. As the sun drops and the hours

go up, I lay awake thinking of those gray sweaters.

The next morning went by in a blur as I said good-

bye and started walking to school. Yes, walking. There are

no buses that belong to the school; something about giving

kids exercise, but I really think that all they want is to

punish us kids. Homeroom wasn’t that excellent either.

My teacher, Mrs. Edwards, is an older lady with strange

black and silver hair. She spoke with a whisper, but I did-

n’t even pay attention. My other classes went by so slowly

and I thought that lunch would never come. But, lunch

was even worse. I sat by the trash cans on the floor and

when the first banana peel fell onto my head, I lost my

appetite. In afternoon homeroom, Mrs. Edwards an-

nounced that the school will be hosting their annual

Christmas Pollyanna. I knew right then and there that I

wouldn’t be receiving any gifts. When I got home, I told

my mom and she made me buy some dumb present.

The Pollyanna came that Friday before break and

everyone exchanged gifts with each other…except me.

Pop These DaysPop These DaysPop These DaysPop These Days

    By: Connor McDermond

I’m not trying to be a total old man here, but pop just

really stinks these days. All it is is some talentless

auto tuned pretty boys thinking that they can make a

song. The lyrics just stink! “Call Me Maybe.” Wow!

Is that just a desperate attempt at rhyming something

with baby. Plus, “I need a refill?” What were you,

getting sponsored by Burger King? The songs are

also repetitive in Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” He says it

55 times - FIFTY FIVE TIMES! Plus, he sounds like

a seven year old girl singing (no wonder he’s the

worst female singer in the world.)

By the way, you have to be kidding. A guy writes a

song called “Payphone” in 2012! Wow! What’s his

next single, “Floppy disk?” Pop started getting de-

stroyed by these young faced talentless hacks ever

since Michael Jackson died. Every time I hear a pop

song on the radio, I cover up my ears to not listen to

this dog doo doo. If you have the same opinion as

me, then good for you. but if you don’t, get a life and

stop worshipping these untalented pretty boy morons

as gods. I rest my case that pop stinks these days,

and don’t even get me started about One Direction.

    A SHORT

    STORY

When everyone was done, I had nothing. I watched as the

other students opened their presents and I sat there. I

don’t know why, but this made me a little upset. The rest

of day went by like always and as I was leaving, I heard

someone call my name, “Annie! Annie!” I turned to see

Mrs. Edwards standing at the entrance holding a gift,

“This is for you! One of the students was embarrassed to

give this to you and asked me to and I must have forgot-

ten!” I smiled and held the gift. Maybe this won’t be so

    bad after all. The End.

  • Snowman Paradise By Johnna Diehl

One day, a snowman appeared out of no-where in the middle of Northley Middle School. All of the teachers were scared that the snowman would not leave. All of a sudden, the students be-gan laughing.

“What’s going on?” said Maria. Mrs. Miller exclaimed, “A snowman just

appeared.” The Northley Middle School was now completely frozen.

“Was this school crazy?” said Joey. Kids were running and screaming! So, they closed the school down for five days. The kids and teachers resumed on the Monday of the next week. The snowman was gone. Now the students could learn.

Directions: 1.) In a large bowl, beat granulated sugar, butter and molasses with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon, until well mixed. Beat in egg and water until blended. Stir in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, salt, cardamom and cloves. Cover and refrigerate about 1 hour or until firm. 2.) Heat oven to 350 F. On floured surface, roll 1/3 of dough at a time to 1/8 inch thickness. (Keep re-maining dough refrigerated until ready to roll) . Cut with floured 2 ½ inch gingerbread boy or girl cookie cutters. Remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack; cool completely.

    Santa Claus By Alexis Gindle

One winter night, at midnight on Christmas, Santa was at all the houses giving out presents to all the boys and girls. He was silent. Then he came to a foster home where 20-40 boys and girls lived. Santa needed a lot of presents. One little boy heard a small noise coming from the living room. So the little boy got up from his bed and went downstairs. Santa and the little boy looked at each other and at that very moment Santa new that his wife was watching over him and his new son.

    National Chocolate Covered Anything Day

National Chocolate Covered Anything Day is a very over looked holiday. It is always on December 16th

    . This is a day

to indulge your favorite chocolate foods and not feel guilty about it. Some popular chocolate covered foods are

chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered cherries, and chocolate covered chocolate cheesecake. Some more

different combinations are chocolate covered bacon, chocolate covered bugs, and chocolate covered meatballs.

You can create your own chocolate covered food. Be fun and creative with it.

This holiday goes back to the mid-1800’s. There were many Swedish settlers in Minnesota. They found

the method of covering everything in chocolate. It was in a small town called Lindstrom, where the people thought

this was a great idea and it needed to stay alive. A chocolate shop in Lindstrom called Här är Chokladöverdragna

Något was the first to celebrate this day. If it wasn’t for Minnesota we would not have this wonderful holiday.

The Hunger Games Book vs the Movie

    By: Zoe Tutlo

The Hunger Games! Have you read the book? Have you seen the movie? Well, I’ve done both and let me tell you, I don’t regret one min-ute of it. So which one is better you ask? I personally have no favorite, but let’s see what you think! Mrs. Zimmerman said…“I like the book. The movie was great, but it left out a lot of important parts.” Julia Smith said… ”I prefer the book. The movie was good though.” What do you like better? Thanks for read-ing and see you soon!

  • The Viking Voice loves to find out more about the special people who work here. Julia and Devyn had plenty of questions for our awesome Mrs. Morgan. Q: How long have you been a secretary at NMS? A: Since February 2004. It will be 9 years in February. Q: What is the best part of being a secretary here at Northley? A: The students are the best part. They are always different and it’s a lot of fun to see them when I’m out and around town. Q: What do you like to do during free time? A: Walk and hike with my husband Tom and play “Chuck It” with my puppy, Coal. Q: What college did you go to? A: I went to Keystone School of Business and Widener University.

Q: What is the hardest part of being a secretary? A: Getting my work done quickly and correctly. Secretaries do many tasks at one time, but at the end of day, everything needs to come together. Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies? A: I’ve been involved with the Green Ridge Volunteer Fire Company for 30 years.

Q: Have you worked outside of the district? What did you do? A: I was an Administrative Assis-tant to the President of UGI Corpo-ration. It’s a fancy name for a sec-retary, but I had a company car and a clothes allowance. Q: What type of music do you like to listen to? A: Anything you can dance to!

Q: What is your favorite movie and book? A: My favorite movie is “Gone with the Wind”, and the book I always read and reread is about 911 firefighters. I don’t know that it’s my favorite book, but it’s been my “go to” book for 10 years. Thank you, Mrs. Morgan. We appreci-ate all that you do!

I want to thank you once again for

everything you did to put a smile on

writing. I am actually working on a

book myself. It's a book about my

experiences in Iraq back in 2003. I

went to Iraq when I was 18 right

after high school. I have two kids, a

boy who is 5 and a girl who is 8 and

I miss them both so much. My kids

and I also love Harry Potter.

I don't have anyone else in my fam-

ily in the military. I am the only

crazy one who joined the Army but

I love every moment of it.

(Siegel’s Nest Continued) actually cause more friction. I hope you have a wonderful birthday! Q: I am pretty sure there is a student who is being bullied in my home-room. He won’t say anything but some kids always seem to be making fun of him. Should I say something or should I stay out of it? I’m afraid I will make it worse and the kids are just kind of talk-ing down to him and laughing at him. A: Any time, and I mean ANY time, you see someone being hurt emotionally or physically, you should report that. You can remain anonymous. But this student may really need our help. Let’s work together to help him and ALL students who are unfortunately a target of bullying. We can make a difference.

(Interview with the Elves continued) What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? Besides making toys, we love to sing Christmas carols, play basketball, and smile. Smiling is our favorite thing to do! What is it like working for Santa Claus? It’s so amazing! He is the best boss ever! He gives us breaks whenever we want them, and sometimes we even get to travel in the sled on Christmas and help him give out the toys. I think that we all like to work for him. Well, except for Frank. He has to pick up the reindeer poop. But, everyone else has a great time. I’m just glad that I got this job and I don’t have to mend shoes or bake cookies in a tree or anything. How do you get to Santa’s Work-shop? That information is confidential.
