President's Remarks Mark Jacobson Welcome to the second issue of Scattered Seeds under our hardworking editor Tina Korn. Please help her continue the tradition of quality JGSPBCI publications by submitting genealogy related articles. I am sure you have all enjoyed our first three meetings of the season and have learned a lot from our speakers Dennis Rice, Helene Kenvin and Jerry Naditch. Special thanks to our Past President Dennis Rice for his September program and our Webmaster Jerry Naditch for his November program. Both demonstrated the depth of talent we have right here on our JGSPBCI board.

In December we have another of our talented board members, Phyllis Kramer, with a program that will help you navigate the maze of online research. Our program chair, Helene Seaman, has been working hard to bring the finest speakers in genealogy to our 2011 meetings.

In January we will have Logan Kleinwaks, who will talk about his website for accessing historical European directories.

February's speaker will be Bennett Greenspan, from Family Tree DNA, who will give us the latest on using DNA for genealogical research.

In March, we have Ava Cohen, the “photo detective” to help us learn more about our family photos.

We are continuing our SIG meetings before each meeting for our members who are focusing on a particular geographic area. December is Hungary and Romania. In January, please join me for my Galicia SIG. February is Ukraine; March is Poland and Belarus; April is Lithuania.

Recently a new website was mentioned on the Jewish Gen mailing list. This is a remarkable 'moving map' of Poland that can allow you to follow changes in the Polish map over the past 1000 years. http://polmap.republika.pl/polska1.htm. It is in Polish, but the map part is easy to understand. Watch Poland grow to encompass much of what would become Galicia, the Ukraine, Belarus and Latvia and then, watch it be torn apart through annexations and war. Most of our Ashkenazi ancestors lived in these areas and suffered through this tumult.

Make sure to check your e-mail for Jackie Fineblit's monthly messages with information on our upcoming programs and special events, she works hard to keep us all informed.

Sunday, February 27, 2011 is a special day for us, the JGSPBCI's 20th Anniversary Luncheon. Natalie Hamburg and Sylvia Nusinov have planned an exciting program that will be a treat for everyone. In conjunction with the Luncheon we will be publishing a Souvenir Anniversary Journal under the guidance of Mona Morris.

Tina’s Tidbits In July, 2010, my summerwas filled with familyreunion excitement, as Ienjoyed the success of meeting the descendants of my maternal grandmother’ssiblings. My new family tree project

will begin in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in January, as I continue my search for the descendants of my paternal side of the family. Many brick walls began to crumble this year, as my diligent library research revealed newly discovered records. My message to members is “Don’t get discouraged.” Read on line websites for recently added archives. Read blogs and postings. Special thanks to Jackie Fineblit for being so diligent and supportive. She is the backbone of Scattered Seeds. Thanks, too, to all of the Board members for their encouragement.

Beginners Genealogical WorkshopsThe Jewish Genealogical Society of Palm Beach County will hold Beginners Genealogical Workshops on January 12, 2011 and on March 9, 2011 at the South County Civic Center, Jog Road, Delray Beach from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. These workshops will be held prior to the regular scheduled meetings. It is suggested that you bring a snack, drink, paper and pen.

The Workshop will cover "Organizing Your Information", "Researching Census" and "Vital Records and Passenger Manifests". Our goal is to offer individual attention and follow-up to each student through JGSPBCI mentors and instructors.

This Beginners Workshop will be limited to 25 pre-registered participants and will cost $15.00, payable in advance. It is offered for members only. The workshop of January 12, 2011 will be repeated on March 9.

The Workshops will be presented by our own Phyllis Kramer, a dedicated educator and genealogist. Genealogy is her passion, and she brings her expertise and enthusiasm to all her endeavors.

A practicing genealogist, with primary interest in Eastern European Jewish research, Phyllis wears many hats. She serves on the JGSPBCI board of directors and is a member of the Advisory Board of JewishGen. At JewishGen, she is Vice President of Education, where she has created an online education program for over 1,000 students.

Future Meeting Highlights Wednesday, January 12, 2011Program: “The Genealogical Indexer - A Full-Text Search Engine for Historical Directories, Yizkor Books and Other Resources.”Speaker: Logan Kleinwaks, one of Jewish genealogy's brilliant young stars will discuss his newly updated Genealogy Indexer site, a fully searchable tool for text databases from various printed sources, such as historical city directories, Yiskor books (memorial books of communities) and more, including page images. Logan is continually adding Yiskor books, using images from the New York Public Library website. Currently, over 70,000 pages are included. When all the Yiskor books are included, the total will be a quarter-million pages. He is also the creator of www.ShoahConnect.org, an online tool that permits users to go to the Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony and to flag pages ofinterest. If two or more people flag the same Page of Testimony, they receive notice of the match.

Wednesday, February 9, 2011Program: "Beyond the Y-Chromosome: Tracing Your Genealogy with the ‘Other’ DNA"Speaker: Bennett Greenspan, CEO Family Tree DNA. Entrepreneur and genealogy buff Bennett Greenspan has turned a hobby into a career. In years past, genealogists were grave stompers, searching for ancestral information on tombstones and in cemetery histories. DNA technology has changed all that. Greenspan's organization, Family Tree DNA, now lists over 220,000 DNA records in its database. Greenspan will discuss "Beyond the Y-Chromosome: Tracing Your Genealogy with the Other DNA." Traditional genetic genealogy uses the male inherited Y chromosome or the universally inherited mitochondria. In the past, we had to follow direct lines of descent, with autosomal testing for genealogy. Sex doesn't matter any more.Mr. Greenspan, a well known lecturer in the United States and abroad, founded Family Tree DNA in 1999.

Ukraine Special Interest Group (SIG) in Rooms 1 and 2 [Mona Morris], 11:30 am-12:30 pm********************************************

Wednesday, March 9, 2011Program:"Sherlock Cohn - Photo Detective"Speaker: Ava Cohn, aka Sherlock Cohn,The Photo Genealogist, brings a lifelong fascination with heirloom photographs and a multidisciplinary background to photo dating and interpretation. She grew up surrounded by furniture and architecture of the 19th and early 20th centuries in Saratoga Springs, a Victorian-era town in upstate New York. Ms. Cohn holds a BA degree in Theatre Arts from Brandeis University. As she began to recover her own Jewish family history, she recognized the need for accurate dating of family photographs combined with specialized knowledge of Jewish immigrant and Eastern European culture and traditions to tell the background stories within our photos. She has made it her mission to help as many Jewish genealogists as possible to recover the personal information that our ancestors knew when they had their portraits originally taken and as such, specializes in the period of most Jewish photographs, 1880-1960.

Latest Edition of Workbook {A Note from Sylvia Furshman Nusinov} With personal pride and humility, I herald the 9th Edition of GENEALOGY RESOURCES – SEARCHING YOUR ANCESTRY IN ARCHIVES AND REPOSITORIES (formerly titled Genealogy Workbook – Sources for Research of your Ancestry) - now available for immediate distribution by our JGSPBCI to everyone interested in pursuing their research of their maternal and paternal family histories.

Featuring a newly designed cover, title, and two-sided pages, the book is a compilation of material which I have edited and updated, endeavoring to offer an essential resource tool for all researchers of genealogy. Whether one is a beginner or a seasoned researcher, the articles, charts and maps in the 33 chapters and 18 sub-chapters endeavor to answer the questions which “crop up” during our quest for knowledge of our ancestry.

Awarded the IAJGS 2003 Achievement Award for Outstanding Publication and a 2006 Genealogy Outstanding Achievement award by the Florida State Genealogical Society, the 9th Edition continues to be a valuable factor in utilizing current techniques and resource material to expand your genealogical research.

Many distinguished members of IAJGS (International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies) graciously contributed their individual expertise to the Resources book, presenting the latest references for research of Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Galicia, Sephardic and Ashkenazi Genealogy. Among the resources are current National Archives and Records Administration [NARA] forms useful in genealogy requests, U.S. Citizenship and

Immigration service [USCIS] instructions and request forms; U.S. Federal Census forms 1790-1930, Canadian Census forms 1851-1911; Yad Vashem, International Tracing Service and American Red Cross family search material. Best Websites of 2010, Family Tree Charts – and many other references provide researchers the resources to aid in their family search. Glossaries, FAQ’s [Frequently Asked Questions], and Terminology Lists add to the understanding of genealogical words and expressions.

Wishing you all the best in your research!Sylvia Furshman Nusinov, EditorJGSPBCI President [email protected]

The Grossman Project by Jackie FineblitIf you are thinking of writing a family history, or are now in the process of recording your information in a book, blog or website, take a look at THE GROSSMAN PROJECT http://grossmanproject.net/intro.htm

This a website created by Max Elijah Grossman, who set out to learn something about the origins of his Grossman family when he was 29. Most genealogists tend to be senior citizens, but interestingly enough, our grand-children also seem to have developed an interest in finding their roots. Max, encouraged by his grandfather, took time off from his graduate studies to research his family. He recorded many personal interviews, research documents and visited cemeteries to complete this well written and correctly sourced family history.

An article in the Los Angeles Times on October 31, 2010, addresses the collection of antique torahs and rare Jewish books in Iraq that were brought to the US in 2003 for preservation and now Iraq is demanding their return to be placed in their National Library. They were found floating in water and the National Archives (USA) personnel took steps to stop the mold and preserve them. See: http://tinyurl.com/27wefc3

Testimonies Now On Line from JewishGen Digest - October 2010Yad Vashem has digitized their Pages of Testimonies:(http://www.yadvashem.org/wps/portal/IY_HON_Welcome) This amazing resource for those trying to find out what happened to relatives in the Holocaust, is also a resource for finding relatives, based on who wrote the Pages of Testimonies. Many people have been able to reconnect to distant branches of their families by using the information on who filed the Pages, and researching those people. ShoahConnect.com, launched in 2007, allows you to connect yourself to a Page of Testimony from the Yad Vashem site, and if someone else connects to the same record, you are put in touch online.

If you've ever searched the Pages of Testimony and found a record from your family, joining ShoahConnect may link yourself to the record. If you haven't searched Yad Vashem's records, it is highly recommended. It currently lists 635 users, with 9657 associations. The site estimates that 1 in 208 Pages of Testimony are linked. That's good, but it could be much better, and as more people use this resource, the usefulness will rise exponentially.

Postal Evidence of the Holocaustby Steven Lasky, Museum of Family History

Within the virtual Museum of Family History's three new online exhibitions about World War II and the Holocaust you will find dozens of postal artifacts, each one evidence of the Holocaust. Among these postal artifacts you will find various letters or more likely postcards that originated from or were sent to areas in Poland, not to mention various concentration camps.

You will find many more such pieces of postal evidence, not just to or from Poland, but from other regions in Europe, as well. You can find links to all three exhibitions at www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/mfh-wwII-holocaust-01.htm, andwww.museumoffamilyhistory.com

Finding Relatives in Israel - in English by Daniel Horowitz ( IAJGS Webmaster)Shaun Waksman created a tool to help people from around the world find their relatives in Israel. The phone book of Israel in English includes many variations of spelling for first and last names. Jews in the Diaspora and new Olim (new immigrants) who don't happen to know Hebrew will find this very useful.

He also included the official Bezeq (phone company) 144 information web site in English, The Avotaynu Consolidated Jewish Names Index as well as the Southern Israelite Archive - Digital Library of Georgia 1929-1958; 1984-1986. www.israelpb.com/
