Siding replaced on southern elevation

Thanks to the generosity of donors, like you, Goodell Gardens & Homestead was

able to replace the siding on the southern elevation of their historic circa 1885 this

year!

The barn, which was originally put on its current foundation by George Goodell in

1885, was once home to the dairy cattle and horses on the Goodell family farm.

Today it’s used for storage of equipment for events and gardening. Once the multi

-year restoration project is complete, the building will be used for programmatic

and events space.

This fall marks the second year the siding project has taken place. The western

elevation on the barn was re-sided during the fall of 2018 and now the two most

public-facing elevations have been completed. Other renovation work to date in-

cludes replacing the roof with a metal standing-seam-style roof in 2013, funded in

part by Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority; foundation re-pointing and re-

setting over several years, funded in part by Erie Community Foundation an anon-

ymous donor and donors like you; and the addition of a modern electrical service

entrance just outside of the barn with temporary lights and power to the barn also

funded in part by the Erie Community Foundation & donors like you.

The current slate of work for 2020 will address the northern elevation of the build-

ing and will include updating and repairing the doors and the ramp leading to

them.

Thank you so much to our generous donors and granting agencies whose incredi-

ble generosity makes this project possible.

Loucks Donor Legacy Tree dedicated

Friends of Barbara J. Loucks joined members of Goodell

Gardens Board, staff, volunteers, and donors to dedicate

the Loucks Donor Legacy Tree on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Loucks, a charter member, longtime supporter, volunteer,

and friend of the Gardens passed away Feb. 27, 2017,

leaving her estate to Edinboro-area nonprofit organiza-

tions, including nearly $55,000 to Goodell Gardens &

Homestead. This was the largest single donation from an

individual since the original bequest from Carrie & Marga-

ret Goodell who left their estate to form the organization.

The tree, installed in late April, is located between the two

barns at Goodell Gardens & Homestead, alongside the

main pathway. Throughout the summer, donors have pur-

chased leaves to add to the tree, which were installed in batches throughout the season.

Due to inclement weather, the dedication ceremony was held inside the Events Barn, which felt fitting, as

Miss Barb was the first client to rent the barn – even before the roof was installed!

During the ceremony, we dedicated the Loucks Donor Legacy Tree to our good friend Barbara J. Thompson

Loucks. May it serve as a longstanding reminder of what generosity can do for a community. A portion of

Miss Barb’s gift allowed us to plant the seed for future giving at Goodell Gardens, and we are so honored to

be a home to her legacy and the legacy of others.

Please join us in thanking Miss Barb and our others who have contributed by purchasing a leaf on the tree.

If you’d like to leaf your legacy at Goodell Gardens, please visit goodellgardens.org/louckslegacytree.

As part of Edinboro Wizard fest, we hosted

a talk “All About Owls” with experts and

animals from Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilita-

tion Center on September 19, 2019. The talk

allowed folks to get an up-close view of sev-

eral owls that call the center home. Those in

attendance were also able to take photos

with the owls after hearing all about these

majestic birds of the night.
