Bert Schmidt President & Chief Executive Officer

he calendar may say July, but here at WHRo, we’re

already thinking about the Fall. That’s due in large part because several members of the staff and I recently

returned from the PBS Annual Meeting, where we learned about some of the exciting programs that are in the pipeline in the months ahead.

one of the most riveting is the September premiere of the next documentary from Ken Burns: The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, which chronicles the lives of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt – three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The documentary encompasses the history the Roosevelts helped to shape: the creation of National Parks, the digging of the Panama Canal, the passage of innovative New Deal programs, the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights abroad. It’s also an intimate human story about love, betrayal, family loyalty, personal courage and the conquest of fear – told in Ken Burns’ unique narrative style.

Ken’s brother Ric Burns is producing a Thanksgiving documentary for AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: The Pilgrims, which looks at the various forces, politics, circumstances, and events that inspired a group of English men and women to cross the Atlantic in 1620, headed for what they later called ‘New England.’

These two documentaries are joined by dramas and musicals, from MASTERPIECE’s Death Comes to Pemberley to LIVE FRoM LINCoLN CENTER’s Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. And a whole host of science programs, news and public affairs, genealogy with Henry Lewis Gates, and

so many others. It’s going to be a terrific season, and we’re really excited to bring it to you.

But I’m equally excited about our own programming, and so I’m using the remainder of this column to toot the horns of my exceptionally talented staff. At the recent meeting of the Virginia Association of Broadcasters, we were honored many times for our own work. It’s an honor to share those awards with you – and to salute all of the producers, directors, hosts and the entire team of professionals who support them – here:

n July 14, 2003, a new series debuted on public television, and fast became a summer viewing favorite: History Detectives.

During its first season, and for nine subsequent ones, the detectives looked for historical objects and artifacts ranging from Bonnie and Clyde’s bullets to Napoleon’s sword, and from Japanese poetry to the letters of John Brown. Their investigations taught many things about the nation and about ourselves as people.

For ten seasons, viewers responded with questions of their own: did a silicon chip bring art to the moon? Do we have the guitar Bob Dylan used to start a rock and roll revolution? Can we return a Vietnam War diary to its author’s family?

This year, the detectives are taking on a new challenge: they’re tackling some of the nation’s most baffling historical mysteries,

some suggested by viewers and some on their own. Each new episode will devote an entire hour to a single unsolved case from America’s past. Questions like what caused the sinking of the SS Sultana at the end of the American Civil War with the loss of more than 1,800 lives will challenge the detective’s sleuthing powers.

Can we unravel the mystery of the Austin Servant Girl Murders of the 1880s - one of the first recorded instances of serial murder in uS History?

Can we at last explain what happened to the famous big bandleader Glenn Miller, who vanished during a flight across the English Channel during World War II?

And who did kill Jimmy Hoffa, and why? Can we finally crack one of the most famous unsolved cases of the twentieth century?

The History Detectives use cutting edge tools

to crack these cases, sifting through clues and crisscrossing the country searching for answers. Detectives Wes Cowan and Tukufu Zuberi will be joined by newcomer Kaima Glover, a professor at Barnard College, Columbia university.

For tech savvy viewers, the HISToRY DETECTIVES: Special Investigations web pages include a rich archive of videos, additional information on our investigations and valuable guides for your own research. You can also revisit past investigations from previous seasons, featuring detectives Elyse Luray, independent appraiser and art history expert; Gwendolyn Wright, professor of architecture and history, Columbia university; Eduardo Pagan, the Bob Stump Endowed Professor of History at Arizona State university; Wes Cowan, independent appraiser and auctioneer, and Tukufu Zuberi, professor at the university of Pennsylvania and founder of the Center for Africana Studies. HDSI begins July 1 at 9pm on WHRo TV.

Poldark

n the mid-1970s, public television viewers were introduced to a new kind of hero, with these words from Masterpiece Theatre host

Alistair Cooke:

“Tonight we begin a new series, called Poldark, based on the four novels of Winston Graham. It runs to sixteen weeks and I can only say that now is the time to settle in to a spate of loving, dueling, poaching, smuggling, wenching, and marrying.”

And thus began the Poldark saga...

It soon became one of the most popular series to air on any television station. Starring Robin Ellis as the dashing squire Ross Poldark, and Angharad Rees as his long-suffering but devoted wife Demelza, it became one of Masterpiece Theatre’s most beloved titles.

To the delight of those of us who remember the original series, PBS recently announced a new adaptation of the Poldark novels, slated to air in 2015, with Aidan Turner playing the lead. In a wonderful and well-deserved nod to the past, Robin Ellis returns to the new series in the role of the Reverend Mr. Halse.

For those of us who remember the original, the return of Poldark is an opportunity to renew our acquaintance with some of the most interesting characters in modern British literature. For those who will be meeting them for the first time, you’re in for an exciting journey, filled with characters you’ll never forget!

WHRo Education

ou may already know that WHRo is owned by a

consortium of local public school divisions and that our main

mission is to educate the community. What you may not be aware of are the services we provide not only to our owner schools, but to all schools throughout the state of Virginia. one of those services is eMediaVA, our digital media distribution system.

eMediaVA offers every Virginia educator and student access to tens of thousands of SoL correlated resources. What’s even better, with support from the Virginia Department of Education and other philanthropic contributors, we’re able to deliver eMediaVA free of charge. When a teacher logs in at http://emediava.org, they will find a library of nearly 50,000 learning objects including lesson plans, video clips, interactive games, animations, audio recordings, images, and primary source documents.

These learning objects come from a wide variety of prominent national and local sources including PBS, NPR, The Jim Henson Company, the Virginia Department of Education, old Dominion university, Colonial Williamsburg, the Science Museum of Virginia, NASA, the Smithsonian Museums, the National Archives, Virginia’s public media stations, SAS Curriculum Pathways, Norfolk Public Library, and the National Defense Education Program.

Designed to inspire teaching and enhance classroom learning, eMediaVA can be used to download learning objects and integrate them into lesson plans, or to

create playlists where multiple learning objects can be combined and then assigned to a student or class. our system is constantly evolving to meet the needs of Virginia’s educators. one newly added feature allows users to share learning objects and playlists within a school, a division, or even across the entire state.

We’re also always looking to expand and add new learning objects from cultural and scientific organizations that have produced

educational resources. Some of the most recent content we’ve acquired comes from the Valentine Richmond History Center, the Virginia Aquarium, Chesapeake Bay

Foundation, and The Virginia Historical Society.

We believe that eMediaVA features the best purpose built, educational content available, and we’re happy to be able to provide this service to any and every Virginia educator. To learn more about eMediaVA, please visit education.whro.org/emediava

his winter, as part of WHRo’s American Graduate initiative, we invited the community to come together to discuss solutions to the

high school dropout problem.

Many ideas were shared, but most agreed that we already have what it takes to create a strong safety net for all children. We have scores upon scores of school- and community-based programs that are successfully filling a particular niche in addressing the problem, but if we want deeper and more sustained success, we need new pathways for engagement. We need collaborations that span boundaries and dividing lines to bring people together, incubate new ideas, hold up a mirror to the entire community, and forge a common future.

The 100+ stakeholders who participated in the discussions - representing business

leaders, students, parents, educators, intervention and faith-based organizations and government officials – identified three major goals that should drive our work: 1) increase community involvement in schools; 2) increase parental/caregiver involvement in schools; 3) use of schools and neighborhood facilities for support programs. A report outlining these goals in more detail may be found on our American Graduate website at whro.org/Americangraduate.

But these stakeholders didn’t stop there, they wanted action. So, this spring, in partnership with the Hampton Roads Center for Citizen Engagement (HRCCE), we invited the participants to come back together. over

30 showed up for the first meeting and the numbers continue to grow.

When we asked “who else needs to be at the table?” the resounding response was “everyone who cares about our kids.” So, if you care about the future of our children and want to join us on this journey, please call or email me at 757-889-9415 or [email protected]. We only ask that you come with a positive attitude, leave your individual agenda or agency hat at the door, respect everyone’s point of view, and be willing to roll up your sleeves and actively participate in the process.

t his is it. This is the year to live better. To eat and grow local wherever you live. Need an idea to get started today? Want

to try something new in the garden or the kitchen? Take the challenge to try 1 or all 150. Either way you’ll be living closer to the locavore lifestyle.

1. use an old road map and a protractor to draw 100, 200, and 500 mile circles around your city. Choose ingredients based on these lines to define your locavore diet.

2. Compost.

3. Read about 10 locavores online. You’re more likely to stick with a local lifestyle if you know you’re in good company.

4. Join your local co-op grocery store.

5. Pack a local lunch for work instead of dining out on fast food.

6. Make pancakes from scratch – use local flour, eggs and drizzle with maple syrup.

7. Read the labels and know the difference between processed, manufactured, and distributed by. The difference can change how local the ingredients actually are.

8. Host a chili cook-off with the neighbors. Recipe with the most local ingredients earns a prize.

9. Read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver

10. Turn the TV off during your meals. You’ll appreciate your food more and eat less.

For many other great ideas on enjoying what’s in your own backyard, check out whro.org/LetsEat.

This month, WHRo launches a new initiative that’s all about the art scene in our region. The goal is to connect artists who

strive everyday to achieve their vision and individuals who are interested in growing and learning about this thriving (and often unrecognized) community.

“The vibrancy that has come out [in our region] has just been incredible,” notes Debra Persons, co-founder of Hardcore Norfolk.

In its tenure, WHRo has often bridged sections of our community with town hall meetings, TV and Radio programs and community outreach. But as times evolve, so do the methods of communicating. The Scene will exist as an online space with interviews and highlights about what artists are doing, calendars and notifications about events, plus

tWHRo Launches “The Scene”

stunning videos focusing on local artists.

It is our vision that the community be involved in how The Scene progresses. You can connect to these people, have conversations with them, and share what you know.

“Art has become something that is very sharable and viral,” says Skye Zentz, a local musician.

It’s hoped that as The Scene grows, so will the involvement of our community. WHRo has already produced several videos highlighting just a few of our local artists, but we want to show more. Next month, you can get involved and support WHRO’s first crowdsourcing campaign.

BBC returns to 5 days a week

A few years ago, WHRV became a flagship station for the launch of a new, proposed state-wide call-in show, Virginia Conversations. This endeavour was to eventually reach across the Commonwealth, and offer a chance for listeners all over the state to call in on a variety of topics. While there was good particpation from listeners in WHRV’s broadcast footprint, the show didn’t reach the carriage from Northern Virginia its producers had hoped for. And, as we like to say in broadcasting, every show has a “shelf-life”. With that reasoning, the producers of Virginia Conversations have made the decision to cease production of the show at the end of June.

With the show going away, we’ll be bringing you the BBC Newshour in its place on Friday mornings at 9. With world class reporting, and a take from “across the pond”, we’re sure it will be your place to go for more news on Friday mornings.

radio highlights sONg TRAVELs SAturdAY eVeNiNGS At 10 ON WhrV 90.5 Fm Song Travels with Michael Feinstein is a weekly public radio series hosted by five-time Grammy-nominee Michael Feinstein. From jazz, blues, and classical to rock, pop, and country, Song Travels builds a bridge across genres, songs and songwriters. In each episode, host Feinstein and his guest trace the journey of these selected songs and how each artist interprets a song individually.

A CONDUCTOR UNLIKE ANy OTHER WhrO Fmone of the 20th century’s most impressive and elusive conductors, Carlos Kleiber died July 13th, 2004. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of his passing, WHRo-FM will present a two-hour audio memoir of his rehearsals and performances, hosted by Jon Tolansky. The program includes contributions from singers Ileana Cotrubas, Thomas Hampson, Dame Felicity Lott and the late Dame Margaret Price, as well as members of the Chicago Symphony, Royal opera House, London Symphony and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras. Tune in Sunday, July 13 at 5 PM for “Carlos Kleiber: A Conductor unlike Any other.”

“OVER THERE” JuLY 28 - AuG 1 ON WhrO 90.3 Fm

It was called, idealistically and naively at first, the “war to end all wars.” It wasn’t and it didn’t, of course, and the British lads who marched off to the “Great War” expecting a jolly romp were soon sorely disillusioned or lying dead in the mud of France. World War I began on July 28, 1914, lasted four years and destroyed millions of young lives. Among those in uniform were composers, each intent on serving his country. Tragically, some were lost in the fighting, while others went on to realize musical careers. In observance of their service, throughout the last week of this month, we will hear music by these soldier-musicians - George Butterworth, Maurice Ravel, and Fritz Kreisler, among others.

JUKE IN THE BACK FridAYS At 7Pm ON WhrV Fm Since 2007, The R&B Chronicles, hosted by our own Jae Sinnett, has occupied the 7PM slot on Fridays. This summer, Chronicles gets a well-deserved break, and we’re happy to bring you Juke in the Back, hosted by Matt “The Cat” Baldassarri.

Matt The Cat presents the soul that came before rock n’ roll: 1950s rhythm and blues. Each week, this underrated and rollicking music plays on that old Rockola Jukebox in the back.

When you need reliable helpwith your power needs,

you can count on Bay Diesel.

“I support WHRO, because it’s always been a part of my life and I want to do what-ever I can to help keep it around forever. WHRO radio exposed me to great music as a boy, and the wonder of BBC television as a teenager. WHRO is now becoming a big part of my three boys’ lives (my 5 year old even knows who Diane Rehm is!) Who wouldn’t want to help ensure that WHRO is here for generations to come?”

WHRo Voicemagine you couldn’t do what you’re doing right now: read a piece of printed material. Imagine you couldn’t hold a

newspaper in your hands, or see it if you could. Imagine you couldn’t scan the grocery store specials each week to plan your family’s shopping, read the sports, or find out when holiday trash collection will be scheduled. Many people in our community don’t have to imagine these things: they’re a daily reality.

More than 30 years ago, WHRo established a radio reading service to provide what national radio and TV news coverage can’t: the flavor of community life that’s best represented in the pages of a local newspaper. The Voice provides volunteers reading The Virginian-Pilot and The Daily Press every day of the year, including local grocery store ads once a week.

To learn more or to arrange for a specially programmed receiver, call the Voice Manager, Sharman Goode-Hurd, at at 757.889.9430. To listen to this service, visit whro.org/voice.

Now non-residents can be winners, too. Buy soon and pay no monthly service fees for a year!

For a limited time when you become an Atlantic Shores owner, you’ll get even more benefits than our community’s beauty, security, on-site health care, and active event schedule. Choose from a variety of beautiful apartment homes or villas and you can take advantage of our limited-time “Welcome to the Neighborhood” offer that will give you significant cost savings. Here’s how it works: New owners will be entitled to 12 months with NO service fees. And, you can

decide when to take advantage of the offer. Start your fee-free months immediately, or you can “bank” the offer and go fee-free at a later date of your choosing.

To give you an idea of the substantial value of this offer, here are just a few of the things that are covered in Atlantic Shores service fees: Award-winning dining, 24-hour security and EMT services, utilities, housekeeping, landscaping and more. With “Welcome to the Neighborhood,” it’s all free for a year.

This is a very limited-time offer, so don’t delay. If you’ve considered a move to Atlantic Shores, there may never be a better time. Come visit our neighborhood today and we’ll show you a “welcome” like no one else.

Call your Atlantic Shores sales counselor, or for more details go to: AtlanticShoresLiving.com. Your housewarming gift awaits.

Don’t let it slip away! Own Your Future

When we say “Welcome to the best neighborhood,” we really mean it.

Atlantic Shores voted Best Retirement Community.

W e are extremely proud to learn that readers of Virginia Living magazine say the same thing that our residents have always said – that Atlantic Shores is the best retirement community in this part of Virginia. It is an honor to be so recognized, and it is gratifying to all the people who work so hard here, every day, to make it true. But, as we always say when gracious awards come our way, the real winners are our residents.
