I hope everyone’s projects are going well and I look forward to seeing many of them in the coming months. This month I have a few items that I would like to draw your attention to. April kicks off the spring 2014 Paper Clover Campaign, which is held in partnership with Tractor Supply Company, and will run April 23 through May 4, 2014. During each campaign, shoppers at local TSC stores have the opportunity to support the 4-H Program by purchasing paper clovers in the amount of $1, $5, or more at checkout. These funds are then donated to the University of California, and go on to support the 4-H Youth Development Program at the county, state and national levels – the majority of these proceeds stay right here in Shasta County. In fact, during the fall 2013 campaign, our local TSC store placed as both a District and Class Champion amongst all participating California stores, with $878 of $1,351 going straight to our county program. No doubt this represents a significant amount of dedication on the part of our Redding TSC folks, so please join me extending a heartfelt thank you to Tom Butler and his staff. Tom has also extended opportunities to our local clubs to conduct fundraising activities at the Redding store, so be sure to give him a call if you’re interested. So, where does this money go? These funds are donated to UC, not the local council, and so use of these funds are at the discretion of County 4-H Staff with the approval of the County Director. However, we would like to leverage these funds to provide a direct benefit to the youth in our program. In that spirit, beginning this year, we will be using a portion of these funds to provide camp scholarships to youth interested in attending one of two camps. These camps are the Tehama County 4-H Youth Camp being held July 12 through 16, 2014, and the new Redding Recreation Farm Adventures day camp. Look for more details and a scholarship application in next month’s T’NT. Thanks for reading. Nate

California military youth are resilient and take pride in their service

to our Country. The month of April provides and opportunity to recognize and honor the service of our youngest heroes, military

children. California is home to approximately 157,00 military youth, the highest presence of military youth in the United States.

The California 4-H Military Partnership Program, part of UC Davis Cooperative Extension, invites you to join us for the 4th Annual Purple Up! for Military Kids celebration by wearing purple on Tuesday. April 15th. This is a very visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Marine red, and Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force blue.

Need some ideas to get you started?

Ask your local, regional, state, and federal officials to wear purple on Tuesday, April 15th.

Invite news and media outlets to feature a story about Purple Up! for Military Kids

Involve schools, sports teams, youth organizations, clubs and afterschool programs

Invite co-workers, exercise class, or golf league to show their support

Ask stores and restaurants to put a Purple Up! Flier in their business window

Suggest companies and businesses to ask their employees to wear purple

The BIGGEST day of the year for 4-Hers to plant trees is April. All 4-H club and units are encouraged to organize tree planting events this month to celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day and Global Youth Service Day. Please take advantage of the opportunity to join with thousands of other 4-H youth to plant trees as a community service project! Please consider making this your April community service event. People and groups outside of 4-H are also encouraged to plant trees. Earth Day is April 22nd, so Saturday 4/19 or Sunday 4/20 would be ideal planting days. National Arbor Day is April 25th, so Saturday 4/26 or Sunday 4/27 would be ideal planting days. Global Youth Service Day is April 11-13, so the same weekend would be perfect for your tree planting event. Good places to plant include local/county parks, schools, front or back yards; farms and ranches.

Swede Creek Primary Group

The Swede Creek Primary Group has been very busy this year. We have met many times, learning about pets, animals and creating crafts.

In December, members made Christmas ornaments to take home for family decorations. In February, we made Valentine’s Cards for those in Rehabilitation Convalescent Homes. Students stamped and painted hearts, and one student made a secret card to mail to his mom! In March, we made Chia pets. Members learned how to take care of a plant. We discussed the needs of plants, sun, soil water and air. One of the favorite activities all year was building insects and plants with the lego kits.

We have had visits from pets, rabbits and a tortoise. Members have shared about how they are taking care of their animals and how much they have learned.

It is their way to find out about you and how the California 4-H Youth Development Program is doing overall. To encourage 4-H members to complete surveys online, they have established incentives for completing the required Spark Score Questions. Shasta County had two members win gift cards for the survey period closing January 31, 2014.

Congratulations to Seth Martin and Autumn May!!! All youth who complete all the required Spark Score Questions in ORB between May 1, 2014- August 31, 2014 will receive a $50 gift card in the fall of 2014. So make sure you log on and complete your surveys!

FORESTRY FUN FACTS Droughts, forests, fires, and you

According to the California Department of Water Resources, between October 1st, 2013, and March 21, 2014, Redding received 13.68 inches of precipitation, which is only 50% of the average for that time period. Additionally, nearly all of that fell after February 5th, 2014. It may seem like it rained a lot in February and early March, but we are still in a severe to extreme drought. The drought affects farms, ranches, and livestock, but it will also have major effects on forests this summer. Why? Well, even in the mountains, much of this winter’s precipitation fell as rain, not snow. That meant while the valley started to catch up on moisture, the mountains did not get what they needed. Through the spring and summer, our surrounding forestland relies on mountain snowmelt. This year, because so little of the precipitation fell as snow and whatever snow we had starting melting earlier than usual, mountain forests will start their growing season with very little moisture. That means areas that normally do not burn well due to higher moisture have been drying out and will be more likely to harbor crown fires, spotting, and in general, high severity fires this summer. In other words, this summer’s fire danger in our surrounding public lands will be extremely high. While high fire danger is a term tossed around a lot these days, this summer’s fire danger outlook looks even worse than usual. As we learned this January before it started raining, this year’s fire season is getting an earlier than usual start. After an uncharacteristic abundance of January fires, we were given somewhat of a reprieve in February and March, but it does not appear to be long-lasting. It is important to remember that drought is but one stress causing damage to trees. Once a tree is weakened from drought, other things, like insects or diseases that might not have had as drastic an effect in a non-drought year, can quickly add to a tree’s decline. When combined, all of these decline factors increase the chance that a tree dies. Along with dead trees, we are surrounded by grass and shrubs that- even in normal years- burn easily in the summertime. So, you ask, what can I do about it? This spring, summer, and fall, be extra vigilant! That means a heightened awareness of things that can start fires. Make sure you have no chains dragging when trailering equipment, trailers, or boats. Make sure you are careful with firearms. If you are camping, make sure to be extra careful with that campfire or camp stove. Make sure that you pay attention to burn restrictions. After all, while the forest is where you might find the big flames, it is the small stuff- grass and shrubs- where fires are started. Even after a good rain, in our current state of drought, these “fine fuels” dry out very quickly, and they are very good at spreading fire once it starts.

Seed Starting This is the time of year that we think of planting vegetables and flowers in our gardens or starting them from seeds. For those of you in the valley, you’re past the last date that we usually have frosts that will damage tender seedlings, so you’re ready to plant. Push your seedlings out of the bottom of the pot and gently hold them by the leaves. Never grab a tender seedling around the stem. It’s like strangling them around the neck and causes long-term damage, since the stem carries water and holds up the plant. If the leaves are damaged in transplanting, they’ll grow back. Just like your hair!

For those of you in the mountains, you can still start seeds since you don’t want to plant tender seedlings outside until the end of May. Disinfect your pots with a bleach mix (1 part of bleach to 10 parts of water) to prevent disease. Use seed starting mix, not potting soil, for best results. Seed starting mix has fine peat, sand and fluffy vermiculite which is friendly to young roots. Potting soil often has large wood chunks or fertilizer. That’s like trying to grow young roots around boulders with a sugar overload. Happy planting.
