MARCH 2019 WHERE GREAT MINDS GROW!

Dear Eastbrook Families,

Our FAMILY STEM NIGHT was a success! We had a wonderful turn-out and the children (and parents) seemed to enjoy the hands-on activities. Thank you to all who attended—and to our teachers and Dividend volunteers who ran stations and showcased STEM projects that evening.

FSA testing begins next month. As parents and caregivers, you can assist us by ensuring that your child is well rested and arrives at school on time. A good breakfast each morning is also a must. Break-fast will be served at NO CHARGE to students on testing days so plan for an early arrival if you would like your child to eat breakfast at school. Students arriving after testing has started will not be allowed to interrupt their classes and will need to take the test dur-ing make-up times. Testing will begin each day at 9:00 a.m. A copy of the assessment schedule is attached to this newsletter.

Are you signed up for Skyward Family Access? If not, please ask your child’s teacher for a form. Skyward allows you to access up-to-date information about your child’s progress in each subject. You can set up “missing assignment” email alerts, and you will also be able to update your information online. The app works well on mobile devices and utilizes a 4 digit pin that allows you to see your child’s progress quickly and easily.

Finally, please use extreme caution when driving on campus and make sure children take the safest route as they walk/bike to and from school. Thanks for your continued support.

Eastbrook Local News: Primary Classes

Spring is here! We are looking forward to our two in-house field trips: our Michelee Puppets and Central Florida Zoo. If you have not yet paid or have any

questions, please contact your child’s teacher. Field Day is March 11th from 9:00-10:20am. We will continue to be working on letter recognition and formation, as well as the letter sounds (phonics) on a daily basis. Please encourage your child to be reading and writing at home to practice these skills. It is important that you take the time at home to read at least 15-20 per day with your child daily. Discuss the story and ask comprehension questions such as who, what, why, when and where. This is an important kindergarten skill that will help your child perform better not only in testing situations, but overall academically. Please remember that you are able to use I-Ready at home for reading and math. This program will focus on your child’s specific needs, as well as assignments that your child’s teacher can provide if extra practice of a skill is needed. If you need your child’s log in, please contact his/her teacher. In math, we will continue our unit on addition and subtraction. We will also start our unit on reading, writing, and representing numbers to 20. Our science and social studies will incorporate motion, earth and space, and weather. This month will also be our final family project, creating a leprechaun trap or rainbow. These projects are given to help you spend some creative family time with your children. We hope you have enjoyed them as much as much as we have. In March, the classes will be having an author study and celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Thanks for your continued support!

We hope you enjoyed your February! Of course, we are very excited for Spring Break, and we hope you are able to have some relaxing time with fami-

ly. We’ve been working so hard in the classroom, so be sure to give your child lots of opportunities to get outside and just PLAY during break! We all need to have a healthy balance of work and play in our lives. We are looking for-ward to our field trip to the Crayola Experience on March 14. We thank you for sending in the permission slips and money by the due date!

As usual, we are incredibly busy in the classroom! You should notice that reading is becoming easier for your child. Keep reviewing sight words, and always talk about the books you read aloud to your child. Ask him or her to retell the story or describe the characters. Don’t forget to include nonfiction books in your read alouds—first grad-ers usually LOVE nonfiction! In class, we will gather infor-mation from nonfiction sources and make connections. Then we will move on to a study of poetry! In Math, we will continue our focus on 2- and 3-dimensional shapes, and then move into two-digit addition and subtraction. In Sci-ence, we will finish up our unit on the Necessities of Life, and then we will start our unit on Plant Parts, which will continue throughout April. We will be planting seeds and observing their growth; we just know the children will en-joy this! In Social Studies, we will learn about our commu-nity and compare our community to others. We will also learn about life in the past and compare it to our lives now. As always, we thank you for your support!

Second graders start off March celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. A day is set aside to celebrate and

encourage everyone to read. We will spend part of our day celebrating literacy and the other part delving into good books as we continue to earn AR points. During our Reading Block students will continue to take apart stories and non-fiction selections looking for facts and opinions, important ideas, cause and effect and the plot or theme of a story. For grammar, we will focus on prefixes and suffixes and how those word parts change the meaning of a word.

Math has us moving from data to time and money. As al-ways, we urge the practice of math facts at home to build fluency.

Finally, in Science we will move from weather, to the human body and life cycles. The students enjoyed Professor Dodad, ask your student about it. They are looking forward to our field trip to the Shakespeare Theatre to on April 30th. Please note that if you paid the entire curriculum/activity fee at the beginning of the year that this field trip was included in that fee. Your child will need to have a bag lunch, one that is completely disposable. We will be having lunch on the lawn at the theatre, weather permitting and returning to school for Specials. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you about chaperoning this trip.

Thank you so much for continuing to support your children and their teachers by making sure that rules are being fol-lowed and proper respect is being given. Everyone is work-ing hard and together we can make sure that your child is the best that they can possibly be.

VE Look out everybody, Pre-K is marching into March! Since March is coming in

like a lion we are roaring about all the learn-ing we are doing. Miss K is coming to tell us all about her soccer adventures as she “kicks” her way into victory. But the best thing about Miss K is that she is Kind and wants all of her Pre-K friends to be the same. We will talk a lot this month about anti-bullying and what we need to do in case we ever confront one. Kindness is the key! Miss K is also kind enough to bring us Kites to fly. Mr. G will be going out of his way to help us think “Green” as we talk about spring “ Gardens” and wearing the color “Green” for St. Patrick’s Day which many of us may tradi-tionally celebrate this month. We have shamrocks to fin-ger paint and “gold” nuggets to count! We will soon be studying the life cycle of the butterfly. Please take the time to ask your child to explain the fasci-nating stages of a butterfly from chrysalises to metamor-phosis and perhaps even try your own luck with growing them for yourself in your backyard or butterfly garden. This is a perfect opportunity to spend some time at the library where you and your child can read up on the sub-ject and conduct your own science experiment at home. We will be plenty busy this month so on March 15th we will be taking a much needed break. Spring Break! (Class will resume on Monday, March, 25th.) Yes it’s time to rest up so we can continue all of the exciting activities that are planned till the end of the year.

Eastbrook Local News: Intermediate Classes

4th grade students just returned from a fantastic field trip to St. Augustine. A big thank you to all parents and families who helped us make this trip a reality this year! It is truly appreciated! ELA clas-

ses are currently spending time learning about Greek My-thology and reading different myths in prose and poetry. We are also learning about allusions while we learn about the different stories and characters! If you happen upon an allusion to Greek Mythology in the real world, please point this out to your child! Students are also continuing to practice text-based writing daily to prepare for the FSA Writing test coming up in April. In math, fourth graders are beginning their measurement unit. This will include converting customary and metric units; for exam-ple, determining about how many inches are in 3 feet. We will also be making connections to geometry by finding the area and perimeter of rectangles or combined rectangles. These skills require multiplication so please continue to practice basic multiplication facts at home! Please contin-ue to remind your child to keep working hard on weekly activities in and out of school such as homework, iReady minutes, Xtra Math, etc. With FSA rapidly approaching, this constant practice will help greatly! Also, please check with your child to make sure their headphones are in good working order. We are beginning to see some deteriora-tion of students’ headphones here at school, and it is im-portant for all students to have a working pair of head-phones or earbuds. Thank you for your support!

In 5th Grade we have been studying about the weather. We had Eric Burris as a guest speaker from WESH 2 News. He

shared with the students some of the expecta-tions of his job. We learned about happy highs and lonely lows as they refer to cold and warm fronts. The students were engaged and walked away learning something new. In Social Studies they are learning about The American Revolu-tion and Paul Revere. Students are researching about an important person that was in the war and are completing a power point or a poster of their choice.

Forms have gone home about middle school class selection. If you have not handed them in yet, we are signing students up online so return them by March 4th and 5th. Also permission slips have gone home about the 5th grade maturation video that will be shown before break. You must check yes or no and complete the form entirely.

Please don’t forget to send in absence notes if your child is out sick. Please refer to the SCPS Policy on sickness if you are unsure if you should send your child to school if they are sick.

SCPS Illness Policy

Guidelines to send a student home for a possible illness cited from the SCPS Health Services Manual:

1. Fever 100° and over *.

2. Vomiting (usually more than 1 time)

Last month, we went on our much-deserved trip to Legoland! Thank you to parents and chaper-ones for helping make this a fun and safe expe-rience for our students!

In ELA, we are continuing to work on text-based writ-ing by comparing and contrasting points and key de-tails of two informational texts on the same topic. We will continue to work on the theme, setting, and plot. In Math, we will continue our measurement and data unit. Students will work on solving problems involving estimation, time, liquid volume, mass, measuring lengths, bar graphs, and line plots. Students will tell and write time to the nearest minute and solve elapsed-time word problems with the use of visual clock mod-els and number lines. They will estimate and weigh ob-jects to understand the size and weight of a liter, gram, and kilogram. In this unit, students will also construct, read, and interpret bar graphs and picto-graphs. Our next Math unit is on area and perimeter. Even though we have moved on from multiplication and division, to ensure your third grader’s success in math, please continue to encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts to gain fluency. In Science, we are finishing our study on plant parts and their re-sponses to stimuli. After our parts of plants unit, we will move on to classifying plants and animals. In So-cials Studies, we are studying the 5 regions of the United States.

It is looking to be a very busy month! Please reach out to your student’s teacher if you have any questions. We hope you and your family have a wonderful spring break!

Eastbrook Local News: Special Areas

Media Center

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome. I am excited to be a part of the Eastbrook team. My hope is to encourage students to learn something new each day through reading. Please continue to encourage your child to read and discuss with you what they have read. New books have been ordered and should be arriving soon. There will be different genres and titles to spark your students interest. If your child has an overdue or lost book please have them return them each week. Your child visits the media center weekly but will not be able to check out until the previous weeks books are returned. They can also recheck out books that they were not able to finish in a week.

A great resource for your child to read on a smart phone, computer or tablet is Overdrive. Overdrive can be accessed through the Seminole County Public School website and has thousands of titles. Your child will only need their student ID and Last Name to log on. Often there are popular books that are checked out from the library but can also be accessed online through Overdrive. They will not be able to log on to Overdrive if they have overdue or lost books.

If you have questions or if I can help with anything please feel free to contact me at:

Happy Spring! This March, we are working on Spring themed art! Kin-dergarten, first, and second grade students finished up learning about pop art in February. Ask your child what they learned, and to show you what they made!

Third, fourth, and fifth are fin-ishing their op art this week, and they should be going home before break. Ask your child about M.C. Escher and tessellations. I hope you all have a restful Spring break!

Thank you for your support!

We are so excited about all of the great things that will be happening this March. First, we have our an-nual field day on March 11th and 12th. It is an Olympic themed event. The students get to experi-ence the spirit of the Olympics as they participate in friendly compe-tition. Fair play, teamwork, and fun are emphasized above winning or losing. The students have been working on their running and jump-ing skills so that they will be ready for the big event. The cross-country season has ended as of March 2nd. We are so proud of our runners and we look forward to starting up again next year. We want to give a special thanks to all of the families that have partici-pated this past year. We know that it takes a great deal of com-mitment and time to get your child to practice and to the Saturday meets. By doing so you have help create wonderful memories for your child and you have been in-strumental in leading them down a path of health and wellness. We hope that you have a wonderful spring break and as always stay healthy and happy.

Recently, several Eastbrook Chorus students participated in The Seminole County Elementary Music Festival. This huge event featured over 200 students from 31 different schools. Students met together for several evening rehearsals and performed at Millennium Middle School on February 23rd. Eastbrook was represented by Siomara Rodriguez, Chelsea Calliste, Eleanor Ngo, Jillian Scheinberg, Natalia Rivera, Alexis Gerry and Lycia Lopez. Congratulations on an outstanding concert performance! Video of this performance can be found on Mrs. Lang-ston’s YouTube channel, Lisa Eastbrook.

Recorders are still on sale in the music room for $10.00.

Thanks to everyone who attended our annual STEM night!
