STUDENTS STAY BUSY!
Students listened to professionals from a wide array of professions in the field of health and medicine. Here’s a listing of
some of the speakers and activities from this past year:
Select seniors were invited to attend Research Day at EVMS. Accompanied by medical students, they listened to
research poster presentations made by EVMS faculty and medical students. The keynote was the 2017 Nobel Laureate
in Chemistry, Dr. Joachim Frank professor at Columbia University
Program juniors and seniors viewed an Autopsy via a two-way feed from the COSI Museum in Ohio
The annual Haunted Hallway project allowed many students to interact with EVMS medical students in an alternative
to Trick or Treating...great fun was had by all!
Dr. Paul Aravich visited the Freshmen with his “Bucket of Hearts”.
Select Bio Ethics seniors attended the SNGH BioEthics committee meeting each month.
On November 1st, Bioethics students attended the annual SNGH Bioethics Conference. This year’s event focused on the
topic of ‘Ethics and Genetic Testing’
Select seniors participated in a three day mentoring program at EVMS. Matched with first year medical students, they
saw first hand what a typical three day routine might be in medical school, attending classes, lectures , and labs with
their partner.
During her November lecture, Chelsie Walker, from the Endometriosis Foundation, spoke with anatomy students about
research and treatments for an ailment many women face
Juniors toured VCU and the MCV School of Nursing during the yearly college campus visit to prepare them for the
college application process. An added treat was having lunch in the dining hall and meeting up with former MHSP
students: Zachary Green and Kristina Boone.
Sophomores participated in the “You Be the Pharmacist” interactive role play through the COSI live web feed program.
Basic patient questioning-counseling skills were explored during the 90 minute case study.
Program seniors observed a two way webcast from COSI on “You Be the Forensic Psychologist”
In preparation for national certification testing, EMR students went into the field to observe the Norfolk Emergency
Training Center to see first hand the tasks they will be required to perform.
A panel of former MHSP students now attending various graduate level programs at EVMS, including medical school,
discussed their individual educational paths towards a career in medicine.
The annual White Shirt Ceremony was held to honor program seniors. Our keynote speaker was the class of 2018 Spirit
of the Oath award winner, Jessica Vincent.
Surgical Assistant’s Day was held with Juniors at EVMS. They learned about the career and education involved in this
particular field of study.
Juniors presented poster projects to EVMS MPH students...posters focused on global issues and each group presented
not only a visual representation of their topic, but also presented oral details on data and sources.
Freshmen visited EVMS to tour the Anatomy lab for the first time. Juniors were very attentive in the instruction and
highlights they presented in small groups
Freshmen took part in the first of several short seminars presented by MHSP parent, Lynn James. These seminars
focused on patient questioning, listening to patient responses and general communications skills needed in the field of
health as well as trauma medicine.
Dr. Stacie Ringlab, from ODU, spoke with juniors about the field and education of biomedical engineering.
Anatomy and senior level students attended the Donor Memorial Ceremony at EVMS to express appreciations for the
learning opportunities afforded them through the anatomy labs.
Juniors had the opportunity to look closely a6t a special Anamotage table at EVMS AND learn a masters program in
Pathology
Seniors participated in a genetic counseling webcast through COSI which included
discussion of a case study along with the ethical and legal ramifications.
Dr. Castillo discussed end-of-life issues and considerations with senior; The importance
of advanced directives was a huge take-away learned.
ChemMed sophomores participated in two separate Sentara Norfolk General Job
Shadow Days.
Just before MHSP graduation, seniors toured the LifeNet Transplant facility in
Virginia Beach where they learned about the value of organ and tissue donation along
with experiencing the very personal decision made by donors and donor families.
Throughout the year , Maury students participated in the Medical Adventures Night
program at EVMS, including Emergency Medicine Night.; Neuroscience Night and
Anatomy Night programs
Freshmen in the “Be a Hummingbird” mentoring program shadowed EVMS mentors
and participated in a special ultrasound clinic.
