2015 Africa CEO Forum....Annual Gathering Of Top African Business Leaders Will Take Place On 16 and 17 March 2015 In Geneva

Manufacturers observe year of successes

India confirms Minister St. Ange of Seychelles will be chief guest

Indian Association in Seychelles, who had the honor of delivering to Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, an invitation letter from India inviting him to be the Chief Guest on the Occasion of the 34th International Congress of NRIs.

This mega event (Generating Global Partnerships) is all set to be held on January 24-28, 2015 in New Delhi - Jaipur. This Congress will provide a platform for interaction between the NRIs where more than 500 are participating from various parts of the world.

The letter handed over to Minister Alain St.Ange states: "We shall be grateful if you [will] kindly be the Chief Guest on the occasion, i.e., on the 25th

January 2015 on the eve of Republic Day in Ashoka Hotel, New Delhi (India).”

Reacting to this invitation, Minister Alain St.Ange said that there is no better time to be seen in India to help raise the country's visibility. "Air Seychelles is starting direct non-stop flight to India from December 2 of this year, and we need to grab any opportunity to make our country seen and noticed in India. Being Chief Guest at that mega event in India will be one such great opportunity," Minister St.Ange said.

Seychelles and India enjoys very friendly ties and only last week a new Coast Guard ship was handed over to the Seychelles by India in the presence of Seychelles President James Michel.

Minister St.Ange led a working visit by members of the island's tourism industry just a couple of months ago. This visit that took them to New Delhi and Mumbai helped create interactions between Seychelles hoteliers and DMC companies with Indian tour operators. The press interest in Seychelles was very evident during this ministerial visit, based on their attendance at the press conferences in both New Delhi and Mumbai and the press coverage that followed. A large number of the Seychelles Indian community also accompanied Minister Alain St.Ange on that working visit to India.

The next AFRICA CEO FORUM, which was to be held in Abidjan, will now take place in Geneva on the planned dates of 16 and 17 March 2015. This decision, taken in consultation with the presidency of the African Development Bank and the Ivorian authorities, was prompted by the organisers' desire to ensure the smooth running of the Forum, amid uncertainty generated by the Ebola epidemic.

CÔTE D'IVOIRE TO TAKE PRIDE OF PLACE IN GENEVA

The original host country, Côte d'Ivoire, will be one of the guests of honour at the 2015 AFRICA CEO FORUM. It will thus have an opportunity to showcase its economic vitality and its investment potential to the financiers and business leaders gathered together in Geneva.

Since its creation in 2012, the AFRICA CEO FORUM has established itself as the foremost arena for discussion between top African business leaders and prominent business and political

The Namibia Manufacturers Association (NMA) celebrated two years of recharged activity, hosting its second annual manufacturer’s awards along with its annual general meeting.

At an event attended by Minister of Trade and Industry Calle Schlettwein, the forum reported on another successful year in facilitating collaboration between public and private-sector players in developing manufacturing as a key national development goal.

Such activities included talks around ongoing efforts to secure locally produced products with preferential government procurement, tackling high utility costs and getting retailers to procure locally manufactured products.

“No country, especially those with open economies or those that are part of a regional integration programme, can take for granted that her manufacturing capacity is secure,” Schlettwein said in his keynote address at the NMA’s gala dinner on October 23.

“De-industrialisation is a constant risk, and policies need to

figures from Africa and all over the world.

With five months to go until the event opens its doors, the number and calibre of people who have already signed up suggest that the 2015 AFRICA CEO FORUM will turn out to be just as successful as previous editions and will once again attract a record number of participants.

The AFRICA CEO FORUM was established in partnership with the African Development Bank. It is hosted by Groupe Jeune Afrique, which publishes 'Jeune

Afrique' and 'The Africa Report’, and by Rainbow Unlimited, a Swiss company that specialises in organising economic development events. The first AFRICA CEO FORUM took place in Geneva in 2012. Since then, it has become the foremost international meeting of top African business leaders, providing them with an opportunity to discuss economic development in Africa with their counterparts and with top-ranking political and economic decision-makers.

be maintained and strengthened to prevent the reversal of gains since independence.”

In terms of Namibia’s fourth National Development Plan (NDP4), the manufacturing sector is expected to grow from N$21 billion in 2012.

That year’s figure represented 53% of the country’s total exports, Schlettwein said, 49% of which were food products and beverages, and another 13% which consisted of refined zinc and blister copper.

“According to the Namibia Statistician Agency’s (NSA) labour force survey of 2013, there are 32 769 employed workers in the manufacturing sector, compared to 28 409 employed in 2012 and related industries, which effectively comprises 4.8% of the total labour force,” the minister said.

“This figure clearly shows that the sector is still relatively small in employment terms but expanding, despite the trend towards automation in manufacturing.”

This was significant, he said, and pointed to the need for “more

concerted efforts to even further increase GDP contribution from manufacturing through the multiplier effect, and linkages”.

Companies who won in the NMA Awards’ five categories were Ohorongo Cement, Black Gold Compost, and Etosha Fishing Corporation.

Ohorongo took first place in both the ‘NMA Corporate Manufacturer of the Year’ and ‘NMA Ambassador for Manufacturing’, while Black Gold Compost won first place in both the ‘NMA SME Manufacturer of the Year’ and ‘NMA New Manufacturer of the Year’ categories.

The final category, ‘NMA Most Environmentally Friendly Manufacturer’ was won by Etosha Fishing Corporation.

The NMA further introduced its new board, comprised of Brian Black (chairperson), Dr Diana van Schalkwyk (vice-chairperson), Andre Snyman, Rene Rusch, Jaco Venter, Angelika San, Ian Gallagher, David Namalenga, Adelaide Shikongo, Koos Ferreira, Hugo Horn, Solomon Nemaire and Ronnie Varkevisser (CEO).

Rwanda has joined a few other countries to enjoy Fourth Generation Long-

Term Evolution (4G LTE) Internet services that will replace the previously used 3G Internet giving faster speed, according to an official statement issued on 12-11-2014 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Reports said that under Rwanda's second blueprint of its Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS2) program, the government targets to have 95 per cent of citizens with access to fast and secure 4G LTE Internet by 2017.It is said that 4G LTE network is one that operates at the leading edge of speed and reliability while 3G refers to a networking standard in cell phone technology that is capable of providing high-speed data service to mobile devices.

The prescribed blast-off was showed at a conference hosted at the Kigali Serena Hotel, by Minister for Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana, alongside Nyirishema, Peter Jeon, CEO of Olleh Rwanda Network, and the Korean ambassador to Rwanda, Hwang Soon-Taik.

Speaking at the launch of this service, the Minister for Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana said: "the rollout of 4G LTE will speed up national development goals by speeding up ICT based services as well as creating jobs and proving new opportunities to deliver better services across the country."

"The launch of 4G LTE is one of many activities that our Government is putting in place so as to achieve a middle class knowledge based economy targets by 2020,” Nsengimana noted while stressing the Rwanda's government commitment in

providing support for ICT literacy to make the service impactful on the lives of the population

The Rwanda Utility Regulatory Agency (RURA), a government body described the launch of this service as an addition to the existing information and communication technology eco-system. According the director-general of RURA, Patrick Nyirishema, this innovation is a new addition to the ecosystem.

"Whatever benefits citizens were receiving due to ICT development in the country, will now increase in terms of speed and efficiency,” Nyirishema said.

On affordability, it is expected that the national regulator will need to make sure the new technology would be good business and sustainable in the long run.

The facility was very well greeted by MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda, and both telecoms have since revealed a retail pricing for their 4G services. MTN sells 5GB at a retail price of Rwf18, 600 for a month's subscription, while, earlier in August, Airtel publicized that it would sell the same for Rwf20,000. Conversely, Tigo Rwanda, which was among the first providers to proclaim readiness to roll out 4G, is still coy on its pricing - as by press time last evening, the telecom firm had not yet formally stated its pricing.

South Africa has signed a nuclear energy cooperation agreement with China as

the government looks to expand the critical power supply system, officials said.

Pretoria said the agreement was a "preparatory phase for a possible utilisation of Chinese nuclear technology in South Africa".

The energy ministry said in a statement that the government had committed to expanding nuclear power generation by an additional 9.6 gigawatts by 2030.

The country has already signed similar agreements with Russia and France, potentially putting firms

Rosatom and Areva in line for the development of nuclear reactors worth billions of dollars.

South Africa currently has only one nuclear plant, located outside Cape Town, and the country relies heavily on coal-fired power stations for electricity generation.

Power supply has come under severe strain in Africa's second biggest economy as the state-owned electricity producer Eskom battles to meet rising demand, often resulting in blackouts.

Electricity constraints have been blamed for limiting economic growth and productivity.

The Walvis Bay Corridor Group says plans to develop the new SADC Gateway Port, situated 5km north of Walvis Bay, are at an advanced stage.

This is according to the corridor group’s Clive Smith, who was speaking at a breakfast panel discussion last week in the seaside town.

The planned port, consisting of a 10km berthing dock, bulk handling facilities, ship repair facilities and a fuel jetty, will cater for a significant increase in import and export volumes and commodities to and from landlocked SADC countries.

Various experts presented their opinions and discussed the economic opportunities and potential challenges associated with the gateway project. The business breakfast was organised and hosted by the Hans Seidel Stiftung.

The Namibia Ports Authority recently announced that the first phase of the gateway project is expected to commence next year - a year ahead of schedule.

Matthew Mirecki from the Economic Association of Namibia said the SADC Gateway Port presents significant economic opportunities for Namibia and this should be carefully balanced against challenges, such as competition from Angola and South Africa.

“The construction of the SADC Gateway Port will also have to be accompanied by complementary infrastructure development in terms of rail and roads. Unless this is done it will be a costly exercise to utilise the

Walvis to become SADC gatewaySADC Gateway Port and this could limit the economic impact,” Mirecki added.

In addition to this, significant efforts need to be made to improve the country’s business environment.

The SADC Gateway Port will improve the appeal of Namibia to investors looking to establish a base in Southern Africa, but the potential economic benefits offered by the new port could be severely undermined if efforts are not made to make the existing business environment more attractive.

In particular, improvements must be made in respect of cross-border trading.

Land and house pricesMirecki said the SADC Gateway Port

would also impact on land and house prices. House prices have risen by 16% in the first six months of 2014.

This has placed Namibia second in the world in terms of house price increases behind Dubai. It is estimated that the population of Walvis Bay is projected to double over the next 16 years from around 80 000 to 170 000, thus creating more demand for land and houses.

With an estimated investment of N$30 billion, the SADC Gateway Port is a massive construction project and will keep the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) buoyant.

It will also create a number of jobs in the construction sector, to replace those lost due to the completion of other major projects outside of Walvis Bay. The construction industry expanded by 29.8 % in 2012 and by 31.5% last year, and

was driven by a number of large-scale projects such as the Husab Uranium Mine, the B2 Gold Mine, the Grove Mall and the SAB Miller Brewery.

However, growth will slow sharply once these projects are completed. Namibia’s transport and communication sector is also set to benefit significantly from the SADC Gateway Port, since it has the potential to open up Namibia to Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe, Malawi, Angola and Botswana. These countries have a combined population of over 140 million people and a combined GDP of billions of dollars.

The SADC Gateway Port will form an integral part of plans to turn Namibia into a regional leader in terms of logistics and distribution.

Currently 6 664km (15%) of Namibia’s 44500 km road infrastructure is standard bitumen.

In contrast, Namibia’s rail network only extends for 2 488 km and there is currently no cross-border rail links with Angola, Botswana or Zambia. According to the World Bank the cost of exporting from Namibia amounts to US$1 650 per container.

The number of documents required totals eight and the average time required is 24 days.

The cost of importing to Namibia is US$1 805. The number of documents required is seven and the average time required is 20 days. These figures compare favourably to the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, but leaves significant room for improvement.

"With the launch of 4G, Rwanda's future is bright. We have a package that is going to change our clients' experience. This is a platform that has also enhanced the competition amongst telecoms in Rwanda," Ebenezer Asante, CEO, MTN Rwanda, said.

Tano Oware, the Financial Director at Airtel Rwanda, said: "Our customers can now enjoy extremely fast download speeds and we look forward to seeing how this new platform, on top of our high speed 3.75G internet service will impact their daily lives and business. The business community, SMEs and corporate companies are in for a treat."

For now, 4G LTE is only reachable in the capital Kigali but will be extended to the rest of the country within three years, officials said.

"The 4G internet service is something we eagerly waited for, but as a start-up, we find the prices are too high; we may have to wait until they have gone down," Geoffrey Kamali, CEO, SMSNation Mobile, a local digital services company, said in an interview. "The telecoms do not seem to agree on the terms of pricing, but I am optimistic that they will soon find a way to lower the prices so that the service can be affordable for ordinary Rwandans and young companies."

account, South African authorities argue that despite these positive trends, the current environment in which the monetary policy operates has become increasingly more complex in recent years owing to a mix of both domestic and external factors, which have impacted growth and inflation.

Government's statistics issued by the South African Reserve Bank (Central Bank) indicate that the country currently faces a mix of subdued economic growth and relatively high inflation with the growth which has climbed to 5.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2014 and this figure is described as the lowest reading since South Africa exited the recession at the end of 2009. Beyond the challenges posed by divergent trends in growth and inflation, the South African Monetary Policy Committee

President Jacob Zuma has prioritized the economy of the country and local

government. According to him the economy would take centre stage this term and announced a target of 5% growth by 2019. He has also publicized that local government, the sphere of government closest to citizens, and the “engine of service delivery” would be revitalised and intensely sustained.

While much of the world keeled in the wake of the global financial collapse, South Africa has succeeded to stay on its feet – mainly due to its judicious fiscal and monetary policies.

The country is politically stable under the leadership of President Jacob Zuma and has a well-capitalised banking system, plentiful natural resources, well developed regulatory systems as well as research and development competences, and a well-known manufacturing base.

With a world-class and enlightened legal outline, South African legislation governing commerce, labour and maritime subjects is predominantly robust, and laws on competition policy, copyright, patents, trademarks and quarrels conform to international norms and values. The country's innovative infrastructure ropes the well-organized distribution of goods throughout the southern African region.

STEPPING UP THE LADDERSouth Africa has reached a

state where its banking sector has been described as a key part of the new pillar of its economic growth engine mainly due to the growing gross gold and foreign exchange reserves passing from 5,786 up to 49,130 millions USD by September 2014 over the last two decades.

members are also worried that with the demand driven price pressures which remain largely absent, amid slowing final domestic demand growth and moderate expansion in credit to households, the marked and sustained depreciation in the local currency, rand’s exchange rate since early 2011 has clearly contributed to the upward trend in core consumer prices.

PASSING THE ACID TESTSouth Africa is a world leader in

mining. The nation is eminent for its profusion of mineral resources, describing for a noteworthy percentage of world production and reserves It has forecast that the economy of South Africa will register foremost lift and leap next year if mine workers don’t go on strike. This is the conclusion of a poll conducted by Reuters.

The median forecast from 35 economists recommended that economic growth will pick up to 2.5% in 2015 from an estimated 1.5% this year.

To refurbishment of the gold mining industry, the South African government is directing mining companies to find other uses for disused amenities to upkeep communities and even continue to provide jobs. South Africa’s over-all assets remain some of the world’s most appreciated, with a projected worth of R20.3-trillion ($2.5-trillion). Largely, the country is projected to have the world’s

fifth-largest mining sector in terms of GDP value.

It has the world’s largest reserves of manganese and platinum group metals (PGMs), according to the US Geological Survey, and among the largest reserves of gold, diamonds, chromite ore and vanadium.

With South Africa’s economy built on gold and diamond mining, the sector is a significant foreign exchange earner, with gold describing for more than one-third of exports. In 2009, the country’s diamond industry was the fourth

largest in the world. South Africa is also a foremost producer of coal, manganese and chrome.

There is substantial potential for the detection of other world-class deposits in areas yet to be comprehensively discovered. South Africa’s productive mineral reserves include prised metals and minerals, energy minerals, non-ferrous metals and minerals, ferrous minerals, and industrial minerals.

THE BEST IS YET TO COMEAfrica has seen the highest

increase in oil consumption globally, 5% in 2012 versus only a 1% increase globally. With significant new discoveries in both oil and gas across Africa, the continent’s collective contribution to the sector is expected to reach 13% of global oil production by 2015. According to a recent report by PwC, Africa holds 132 billion barrels of oil or 8% of the worlds’ supply and 513.2 Tcf, or 7%, of the worlds’ gas supply. This brings opportunities to invest in the sector and is giving rise to some of the continent’s own rising stars such as South Africa.

South Africa remains relatively

unexplored in oil and gas but this is all about to change and very fast. There are recent discoveries and the potential of shale gas points to a flurry of drilling and exploration to come within the next few years, and several factors are driving its emergence as a hub for the wider region. Vast tracts along the South and East Coasts and in the Orange River Basin – a vast and unexplored region adjacent to the Namibian border – have been licensed for exploration by major players including Petro SA, Forest Oil, Tullow Oil, and BHP Billiton.

The economy of South Africa has scored duality, with a cultured financial and industrial economy having grown-up alongside an underdeveloped informal economy. It is this “second economy” which offers both potential and a developmental challenge. Marked by the World Bank as an “upper middle-income country”, South Africa is the largest economy in Africa – and it remains fertile with anticipation. It was admitted to the BRIC group of countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China (known as BRICS) in 2011.

Bsystems Limited awarded best West African ICT Company 2014

More banks partner with MTN to ease services

Invest Bank to launch in Rwanda

In-flight internet soon to be available on all British Airways crafts

BSystems Limited a software and database management company of Ghanaian origin, has been adjudged the West African ICT Company of the year at the 2014 Business and Leadership Awards held in Brussles, Belguim. This award is in recognition of the company's immense contributions to the business community in the sub-region by developing significant software such as Smart HR and Payroll and IHRMS used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), National Health Insurance Agency (NHIA), National Lottery Authority (NLA) and others for efficiency in human capital management and enabling payroll processing in easier and more reliable formats.

The company has also developed the Collateral Registry software for the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Central Bank of Liberia as well as the Identity Verification Systems (GVIVE) software for financial institutions.

The award comes at a time when the company is nearing the celebration of fifteen years of providing cutting edge IT based business solutions that have been specially designed to meet

the next several months if not addressed," Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page.

"We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn't spread further and become a long-term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio."

He said he and his wife Priscilla were donating the funds to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Foundation.

"Grants like this directly help the frontline responders in their heroic work," Zuckerberg said.

"These people are on the ground setting up care centers, training local staff, identifying Ebola cases and much more."

The Ebola virus has already killed more than 4,800 people, most in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Underfunded health systems in the region have been crippled by the disease, which has spiraled out of control and infected more than 13,000 people. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in September pledged $50 million to help boost the fight against the Ebola outbreak, providing the funds to UN agencies and international organizations involved in the outbreak.

Invest bank is set to start operations in Rwanda early next year. It will be the latest commercial bank in the country following BRD Commercial bank and Crane Bank Rwanda which started operations this year.

According to a statement, the

bank will introduce a series of innovative products for its clients.

The bank also says it will introduce new financing models that can achieve social impact in areas such as higher education and technology.

“IBR will offer the most comprehensive customer service in the industry. From our dedicated client support teams, to opening seven days a week and hosting free expert workshops and seminars,” reads the statement.

Rwanda’s financial sector remains dominated by the banking sector which represents 67.6 per cent of its total assets, according to the central bank.

The industry balance sheet measured by total assets grew by 17 per cent during the first half of this year, from Rwf1.5 trillion end December 2013 to Rwf1.8 trillion end of June 2014.

The growth was mainly attributed to the loans to the private sector which increased by 7.2 per cent during the period, from Rwf843.9 billion to Rwf904.5 billion.

On the liability side, deposits grew by 20.6 per cent during the period, from Rwf1 trillion to Rwf1.2 trillion.

Google launched a campaign to raise money to fight Ebola, tossing $10 million into

the pot and saying it will match donations to the fund two to one. In addition, Google chief executive and co-founder Larry Page said his family's foundation is contributing $15 million to the cause.

"Our hearts go out to everyone whose lives have been touched by this tragedy," Page said in a blog post announcing the campaign.

Google started collecting contributions at the website onetoday.google.com/fightebola, where a message indicated that the two-for-one dollar match would continue until $7.5 million more in donations were collected.

Groups targeted by the California-based Internet titan to receive support included InSTEDD, Medecins Sans Frontieres, NetHope, and Save the Children.

The campaign comes less than a month after Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife announced they were donating $25 million to help US efforts to contain the deadly Ebola epidemic.

Access to mobile money services could be enhanced, thanks to MTN’s new partnership with banks.

The country’s leading telecom has partnered with Access Bank, Urwego Opportunity Bank and GT Bank to provide Mobile Money ATM withdrawal services across the country.

The initiative will see MTN Mobile Money subscribers withdraw money from their Mobile Money wallets using these bank’s ATMs without using a bank card, the General Manager in charge of MTN Business, Norman Munyampundu, has said.

“Bringing additional financial institutions on board creates convenience for mobile money users and showcases MTN’s commitment to continue championing innovation,” Munyampundu, told The New Times.

British Airways is likely to start introducing in-flight internet for passengers on most of its aircrafts from next year.

The airline is currently offering the service on some selected flights and it is hoping to bring an end to the trial by end of April 2015 and extend it to other aircrafts.

Speaking to JOYBUSINESS in London, General Manager in Charge of Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific, Jamie Cassidy said this is part of efforts to offer premium services to persons flying from Ghana on their long-haul flights.

According to Moran Birger, British Airways' Commercial Manager for Ghana, Accra has been one of the airline's most important routes and a particular favourite among passengers to the USA.

British Airways began operating daily non-stop flights to and from Accra on a Boeing 767 aircraft in 2002, and upgraded to a Boeing 777 aircraft in 2009.

The airline responded to increasing customer demand by re-introducing its First Class cabin on the route in 2011, and currently operates the daily service on a Boeing 747 SuperJumbo aircraft with four cabins – First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller – catering to both premium and value conscious

In July this year, MTN partnered with KCB and I&M Bank Rwanda to enable MTN Mobile Money subscribers to transfer money between their Mobile Money and KCB accounts, as well as withdraw money from their Mobile Money wallets using I&M Bank ATMs.

To withdraw money from an ATM a customer will first have to get a withdrawal code by dialling

because our business travellers are able to enjoy the convenience of a full working day in Ghana before flying out to an early morning arrival in London. From there it is an extremely easy onward connection to other destinations, or one can freshen up in the lounges at our award-winning Heathrow Terminal 5 before starting the working day in London” explains Birger.

In June this year, British Airways treated customers travelling from London to Accra to a live football match, courtesy of a high-speed

“wi-fi” Internet service the airline is trialling around the world. “This was one of our biggest and most exciting treats for passengers ever. Imagine sitting next to Ghanaian football legends like John Paintsil and Joseph Addo, cheering on the national team at 35,000 feet! We hope that once it is fully operational, this technology could be rolled on across the fleet.”

Accrording to Birger, British Airways has always been committed to making life comfortable in the air and on the ground. “Our slogan 'To fly, to serve' has been at the centre of everything we do because for us, it's a fundamental promise that we would continue to show our commitment to Ghana for many more years to come.”

Quality education, working parents in India, scholarships, and welcoming people is what fascinating African students to the Indian

education system. The flagship Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme take along oodles of Africans to India each year, and over 10,000 students are appearing in private institutes across the country.

Collaboration between Africa and India in this field has ballooned from last few years. India is all groomed to set up a string of higher education and training institutions in Africa different in its development-centric approach. Government of India is setting up institutes, backing programmes and thousands of African students enrolling at Indian universities.

Growing numbers of African students are enthusiastic to study in Indian universities, with a sheer growth in African researchers looking for science and technology fellowships in this country.

Worth to mention, Africa at the moment has approx. 50,000 students in Indian universities, around 15,000 of them on Indian and Commonwealth scholarships. The India-Africa Forum envisaged closer economic and cultural ties in a soft power move.

The Pan Africa e-Network, or PAEN, in which India has tied a knot with the African Union, wishes to provide tele-education to African students in 53 countries through a satellite and fibreoptic network to India.

It was launched in 2009, is by now dynamic in some 34 countries, and is permitting access to and sharing of proficiency between India and Africa in areas including tele-education, tele-medicine, resource mapping, meteorological services, and e-governance and e-commerce.

The seven Indian educational institutions allied with the project are Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore, Amity University, University of Madras, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, University of Delhi and IIT Kanpur.

India has for years been a destination for education-hungry East Africans, starting off in the 1940s when both regions were British colonies, and enduring after 1947 when India gained independence and bigheartedly allowed scholarships to liberation movements in East Africa.

WINNING THE BATTLE

India is economically a very viable country with regard to the fee structure and also the living expense is less compared to Europe or the US and the quality of education and facilities are no less than what you will get in any developed country.

India is constantly making efforts to further strengthen relations with other countries in the education sector. Recently, India and Britain discussed over the prevailing bilateral cooperation initiatives in education sector and also decided to further strengthen by introducing numerous new initiatives. Both countries mutually agreed to establish a joint working group (JWG) involving officers from both countries to focus and work on collaborations in education field. The first meeting of JWG is scheduled to take place in Dec’ 2014 and subsequently will take place on regular intervals.

Without a shadow of doubt, India has experienced an increased traffic of students from the African continent and equally Indian Universities are making numerous efforts to tap more of African students. Bearing an endeavour to attract more African Universities, OP Jindal Global University has declared 50 scholarships for African students inviting them to study at their campus. According to a statement, “The scholarships range from 50-100 percent tuition waiver, based on merit," a university statement said.

The university expressed that the Jindal-Africa Scholarship Programme was part of its vow towards promoting global cooperation and development with a special focus on Africa. C Raaj Kumar, Vice chancellor articulated, "This scholarship programme is intended to build human capital of fellow developing countries through higher education. It aims to build capacities of young Africans by bringing them to the campus in India and training them in key issue areas relevant to the national priorities of their respective countries. The ultimate goal of this programme is to strengthen people-to-people linkages between India and Africa." Also, he mentioned that students from Kenya, South Africa, Liberia, Mozambique, Angola, Botswana, Guinea and Zambia are already studying in the university.

Indian Universities woo more African students

Thousands of Kenyans have availed of Indian government scholarships over the past six decades. They are now pursuing successful careers in Kenya in fields like government, management, academic and scientific research, law, IT and accounting.

India has India has for years been a destination for education-hungry East Africans, starting off in the 1940s when both regions were British colonies

India: A Leading Destination for African StudentsProminent Indian universities have been traveling

to East African capitals, conducting workshops for parents and potential students, hiring recruitment agents and advertising education opportunities on offer in their institutions.

Above and beyond having an extensive array of courses considered pertinent and striking in the job market by young people, the universities are charging pocket-friendly fees that must be music to the ears of parents penetrating for reasonable education for their children. These universities have lower cut-off marks for admitting students than local public and private universities, and enroll students without calling them to go through pre-university courses.

The reality that universities in India have for years hosted students from East Africa and other regions of the world, gives them an advantage in handling learners from multicultural backgrounds.

Top in the battle to get African students are

Manipal University, Sharda University, RK Degree College and SRM University (which claims to be the country’s leading engineering institution), Patkar College and the University of Punjab.

The Indian institutions also organize visas for recruited students, making it at ease for parents who would else spend days rushing after immigration papers. The fact that India has a trustworthy and established higher education sector is also probable to be a magnet for students.

Courses being promoted to students embrace the ever-popular bachelor degrees in commerce, engineering, information technology, health sciences including nursing, and law. Worth to mention, Kenyan students are dispersed in 50 universities across the vast country, taking various courses presented by a higher education deemed by some as superior to that at home.

Uganda has more than 800 students in India, mostly in universities in Delhi, while Tanzania has around 1,000 studying largely in the Hyderabad region.

The use of English as a medium of training, sound living costs, and the cultural, religious and ethnic diversity in the country, resemblance of life familiarity in a developing country and the attendance of foreign student communities from various countries continue to act as a magnetism, hence, leading India winning the battle against other countries.

Art blends with cuisine at exhibition

One of the biggest entertainment shows is on this month as Burundi’s Kenya-based artiste Jean Pierre aka Kidum celebrates his 40th birthday with a music concert in Kigali.

Ahmed Pacifique, the singer’s manager, said the regional star will perform in Kigali on November 28, at Kigali Serena Hotel in a concert dubbed: Birthday Concert, to mark his 40th birthday and three decades of singing.

“There’s no better way to celebrate this milestone than with fans in Kigali,” said Pacifique.

Kidum is expected to stage a three-hour breathtaking show spiced with a live band.

“What makes this concert special is the fact that this time he will sing his own compositions,” he added.

Apart from this being another major entertaining event, Kidum will share his experience with

A cultural event that blends arts and cuisine will be held for the first time in Kigali. Co-hosted by Inema Arts Centre and Heaven Restaurant in Kiyovu, the event will focus on showcasing unique artworks including paintings, sculptures, and mixed media expressions. The event will also feature Rwanda traditional cuisines as well as exotic food to cater for the varied preferences of visitors expected to attend the events.

The event will be hosted every second Saturday of the month.

According to Caleb Igarimeza, the administrator of Heaven restaurant in Kiyovu, it will be a unique event where food and culture will blend to promote the unique Rwandan culture.

“We don’t expect only local people. The whole community of expatriates and tourists will as well attend.

This is going to be a special event that will put Rwanda arts and culture on the global map,” he added.

Igarimeza said that Heaven restaurant has been at the forefront of partnerships with local artistes to showcase their remarkable talent to the world. In all ramifications, 2014 has been a blessing to the movie industry in Nigeria called Nollywood. Despite few unpleasant stories that have happened in the year, which ends in less than 60 days, there have been reasons to thank God.

In the area of families, there have been few additions and as you read this, more are expected to be added hopefully before the end of the year.

Mercy Johnson, Damilola Adegbite, Laide Bakare, Sola Kosoko, Dakore Egbuson, Caroline Danjuma and Uche Ogbodo were some of the movie stars who welcomed babies in 2014.

Already, there are few other expectant mothers and there are possibilities that they might put to bed

before the end of this year or before the end of first quarter of 2015.

Here are few of the mothers-to-be.

Ebola "is a particularly pernicious illness because it renders humans untouchable and that is sickening," Geldof said at a London press conference with Midge Ure, who co-organised the first Band Aid with the Irish singer.

The rocker-turned-activist said he had been spurred into action not out of

Other artists already signed up for the single include Bastille, Ed Sheeran, Elbow, Ellie Goulding, Emeli Sande, Foals, Paloma Faith, Queen Drummer Roger Taylor, Sinead O'Connor and Underworld.

The sleeve artwork will be done by British artist Tracey Emin and the single will be available for download on November 17, with physical copies three weeks later.

As one of the most successful countries in the East and central African region, Rwanda has represented the Zone 5 area four consecutive times at the Fiba Afrobasket championships including the 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 editions.

In an exclusive interview with Times Sports, the vice president of NBA Africa Amadou Gallo Fall said, “We know that there is a lot of interest across the region. We were in Kigali three years ago with Luol Deng (Miami Heat) for Sprite clinics and we saw a lot of passion in the young people that we had in the camp.”

NBA Africa set up an office in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2010 headed by Amadou, who had earlier worked as the vice president of international relations at the Dallas Mavericks.

His vision in Africa was and is still to grow the game at the grassroots level on the continent and has so far seen tremendous success.

Through the Basketball without Borders (BWB), a global basketball development program set up by the NBA and FIBA, NBA Africa has been able to promote the sport and encourage positive change in the areas of education, health and wellness.

Phenias Bagabo represented Rwanda this year at the BWB in Johannesburg and notably national team shooting guard Pascal Karekezi attended the 2011 edition.

Describe Africa in regard to your experience, knowledge and passion for business in the continent?

My experience with Africa is ten years old & during this long tenure I have visited almost 17 countries. In contemporary times, I find no difference between India & Africa except the language. Africans are very knowledgeable people with a charisma of positive attitude. This continent is full of business opportunities & if one would adopt a well-defined & demarcated business roadmap with an apt trade policy, the success is assured.

Africa was erstwhile delineated as the ‘Dark Continent’. So why and how you decided to enter Africa and make the nations skilled?

It is generally recognized that the development of relevant skills is an important instrument for improving the productivity of any developing country.

African countries are working towards improving the quality and skills levels of the youth. With the increasing recognition to the activities of LESDEP, it is enhancing competitiveness and contributing to the social inclusion, decent employement, and poverty reduction in the african countries.

I believe after a span of 20 years

Africa would turn out to be a continent with complete industrialization for which it would certainly need a skilled manpower.

Enlighten us with the vision and blueprint of the brainchild ‘LESDEP’.

As an overarching, LESDEP avowed vision is to provide the nation’s youth a platform that will cater specialized job-oriented training with or without formal education; encompassing facets of learner acquisition to business

development for the prospective entrepreneurs. We are unwavering in our determination to make the youth self-reliant & are working in the equitable direction to promulgate this venture Worldwide.

Of course, Success is assured!!

LESDEP has been in Africa for years now, accentuate some achievements of the initiative and what’s the response of African youth to it?

LESDEP had been started in year

2010 autonomously in Ghana & after achieving unparalleled milestones in terms of dispersal of technical & entrepreneurial skills among the youth, we have started this initiative in other African countries like Niger, Senegal, Rwanda, Guinea Conakry, Burkina Faso etc.

Yes, we have received prodigious response not only from African youth but also from the Governments of different African Countries who commended & applauded us for this Act of Benevolence; making & reinforcing the Youth for a Better Future.

What would be the future endeavors of LESDEP and what efforts are being made to involve African entrepreneurs/governments in this initiative for long term investment and growth?

As articulated earlier, our main focus is to propagate LESDEP Program Worldwide so every person would get benefited with this initiate of KS UNITE.

As it’s a well-known fact that Skilled Labor is the mainstay of every developing country hence we sought to replicate our success in connivance of African local entrepreneurs & Governments through bilateral industrial policies & flexible well demarcated business blueprint as project success hinges on all these facets.

Local Entrepreneur and Skill Development Program abbreviated as LESDEP is an initiative undertaken by KS Academy endeavouring to empower young minds and facilitate SME sector. In an exclusive interview to Kanchi Batra, Sub Editor, INDO AFRICA TIMES, the CEO of LESDEP, Mr. Rohit Khattar highlighted the on going efforts of the program in the African countries.
