VISION STATEMENT

“Whatever you do, do it so well that the living, the dead and the yet unborn could not have done it better.”

Dr. Benjamin E. Mays

I am honored and humbled to be elected the 24th Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Most Worshipful

Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina and Jurisdictions, Inc.

Our Grand Lodge has a rich history and tradition of leadership and service. We stand on the shoulders of

Masons who contributed to our country and jurisdiction in the areas of education, government, military

and social justice.

Dr. Mays’ quote challenges and reminds us we have a three-fold obligation and duty; to our past, to our

present and to our future. To fulfill our obligations, we adopt and advocate the acronym of “TEAM.” We

will:

• Touch lives

• Empower youth

• Assist communities

• Motivate membership

Our vision echoes the words of Mahalia Jackson:

“If I can do my duty as a good man ought,

If I can bring back beauty to a world up wrought,

If I can spread love's message, as the Master taught,

Then my living shall not be in vain.”

Disaster Relief “We are not preparing for the world we live in – we are preparing for the world we find ourselves in.”

Michael Mabee

Prepping for a Suburban or Rural Community: Building a Civil Defense Plan for a Long-Term Catastrophe

The jurisdiction of North Carolina experiences natural disasters in the forms of hurricanes, thunderstorms and tornados.

History reveals these natural occurrences result in damage to and loss of property.

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons has a Department of Disaster Relief. The

Department of Disaster Relief recognizes and understands the five steps of Emergency Management; Prevention,

Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery.

The Department of Disaster Relief focuses on preparedness, response and recovery. The Department of Disaster Relief

has a Grand Director of Disaster Relief and four (4) Regional Directors of Disaster Relief.

The Department of Disaster Relief manages, prepares, reviews and updates preparedness plans for the respective districts,

lodges and regions. Preparedness plans include, but is not limited to, the acquisition and maintenance of insurance, the

procurement and storage of supplies and the coordination of city and town disaster resources.

The Department of Disaster Relief manages, prepares and reviews response operations and plans. This action includes, as

a minimum, the identification and procurement of financial, food, medical and transportation needs.

The Department of Disaster Relief oversees the recovery operations for the respective districts, lodges and regions.

Recovery operations include the support of local, state and national agencies, when required.

The aim and goal of the Department of Disaster Relief is the assurance our districts, lodges, members and regions are

prepared when a natural disaster occurs.

Community Outreach

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or the darkness of destructive

selfishness. This is the judgment. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We are a TEAM! We Touch lives, Empower youth, Assist communities and Motivate Membership. Our guiding

principles are brotherly love, relief and truth. Our Community Outreach Program concentrates on two (2) distinct

avenues of approach; churches and schools.

Hinks and Kantrowitz (2013) in All Men Free and Brethren informs us “Bishop Hood was among the many

northern missionaries who saw the black church as a means through which God was acting in history to uplift the

black race. Grand Master Hood in turn, saw in the Masonic fraternity an opportunity to embrace the dignity and

humanity of a universal brotherhood. (2013, p.141)

African-American history shows the church serves as our spiritual institution. Elementary, middle, junior high and

high schools provide our youth their primary education. These two institutions play critical roles in our

communities.

The aim of our Community Outreach Program is to establish and maintain positive relationships with selected

churches and schools in our respective districts and regions. There are church ministries we can assist with such

as clothing ministries, food ministries and youth ministries. Our schools and our youth need assistance with

administrative operations and supply operations.

Several years ago, I made an observation in an address where I stated, “We have six Masonic organizations and

six Auxiliaries. There are twelve (12) grades in our school system. If one organization and auxiliary adopted one

grade, we (the Prince Hall Family) can influence a child’s life from the first grade to his/her senior year of high

school.”

Our potential, reach and relevance in our respective communities is indefinite. We have the working tools, the

skills and the platform to be our Brother’s Keeper.

Greetings Special Deputy’s & District Deputies Grand Master’s:

I pray this letter finds you in great spirits and of sound mind. As you’re aware of the new leadership for the

MWPHG of North Carolina changes within our youth organization the North Carolina Council Order of the

Knights of Pythagoras has taken place as well. The newly appointed Grand KOP Director is Robert Hassell,

who is no stranger to the KOP as he has served in the local, regional and state capacities over the past 20

years. I have put together a strong team who will assist me in making our youth organization the best.

Our administration’s theme for the newly developed Grand KOP Leadership will be “Positive Youth

Development” using the 5 Cs theory. Positive youth development is operationalized by the Five Cs of

competence, confidence, character, connection, and caring. Positive youth development is an intentional,

pro-social approach that engages youth within their communities, schools, organizations, peer groups, and

families in a manner that is productive and constructive; recognizes, utilizes, and enhances youths’

strengths; and promotes positive outcomes for young people lead by Prince Hall Masons.

In order to understand our current condition for the state of North Carolina we urgently need your help so

please have all the lodges in your respective areas to provide the following pertaining to their local KOP

Council.

Council Name and Number

Number of Youth in Council

Meeting Day & Time

Number of Advisors

Senior Advisor’s Contact Information Including Address, Cell Number and Email Address

Region and District

Sponsoring Lodge

Board of Regent (Yes or No)

Parent Club (Yes or No)

Council: Active or Inactive

We need to have this information within a timely manner so we can generate a new and up to date database.

The information can be sent back to the Grand Lodge attention Bro. Wayne Staton, Deputy Grand Director

or via email which is the preferred method. Attached is an excel format that we would suggest that each

lodge complete and return to my attention.

Thank you in advance for your support and dedication to our beloved youth organization.
