A Jacques GEI{\IRIN,

mon regrett6 professeur qui a illumin6 mon apprentissage musical.

my late teacher, who enlightened my musical apprenticeship.

A Jacques MILLON,

my gurde, who lovingly opened the way of the bass clarinet for me.

AIAI\T.PROPOS

Consid6r6e comme un instrument de sp6cialiste, la CLARINETTE BASSE n'est pas 6tudi6e au

Conservatoire, sauf rares exceptions.

Jean-Marc VOUIA

FOREWORI)

Considered as a specialty instrument, the BASS CLARINET is rarely studied in french

conservatories.

The pedagogy for this instrument being practically inexistant despite a stong interest for the

subject among clarinet players, I felt compelled to write a method. I was further encouraged by the

frequent use of the bass clarinet in today's music.

The student, future professional, independant instrumentalist, or impassioned amateur will findhere, I believe, an essential foundation which witl permit him to progress, and to confront the difficultiesof the classical and contemporary literature.

AVERTISSEMENT

Restez d 1'6coute, concent6.

NOTICE

In this method incorporating numerous orchesfial excerpts, the advice, explanations, remarks, and other commentary are FUNDAMENTAL. The musical examples merely serye as a support forthepedagogic discourse.

In addition, to better guide you, I hope to render this long distance teaching more lively andefficient by accompanying you in almost every exercise.

As in ateal lesson, I may be full of imagery, repetitious, concise or talkative, but will neverabandon you.

Stay attentive and concentrate.

PREEACE

gdn6ral.

Patrice SCIORTINOCompositeur-6crivain

PREEACE

It has been necessary that someone organize a teaching method suited to that distictive instrument, the bass clarinet.

Such a method consists of elements of general interest for all wind players.

This work gives a detailed analysis of the parameters of breathing and sound production, treating each one

separately, and then associating them for increased effectiveness.

At the same time, while seeming to concentate exclusively on sound production, the psychological mechanismis dissected, revealing a mental contribution which is the motivating force of the musical language.

Throughout this method, the text was conceived as being a teacher's voice, relating these magnificent lessons tothe student with warmth, eloquence, and humanity.

The work is rendered more pragmatic by including extra-musical anecdotes and connotations. The sentation thatthe instrument originates and exists within the human body is a fundamental technical element. The student must knowhimself before being able to understand that the tube and key mechanism are only the extemal part of the instrument.

In short, with the help of original exercises and examples from the repertoire, Jean-Marc VOLTA, virtuoso andprofound musician, takes us by the hand with intelligence. He leads us through a forest of thorny diffrculties, to let us

discover a well-earned clearing, one of the rich and happy places in which music blossoms.

Giacomo MEYERBEER LES HUG(IENOTS

I' instrument (D o n ato n i, F e rn eyh o u gh,Reiner, Yun rsang, Sciortino, Schuller, Dubois....)

THE BASS CLARINET:A DEFINITE PERSONALITY

The bass clarinet was originally conceived as an extensionofthe soprano clarinet. It completed the low register, and byadding a new dimension, established its own personalcharacter.

Owing to a generous timbre, dense sound , dflunparalleleddepth, the bass clarinet was a novel and valued addition tothe orchestra. Meyerbeer introduced the instrument bygiving rt anoteworthy passage in LES HUGUENOTS, hismajor opera, which was first performed at the Paris Operain 1836.

Liszt, Wagner, Strauss, Schiienberg and Stravinskyentrusted the bass clarinet with pivotal phrases in certain oftheir works. The bass clarinet expresses pain (Tristan andIsolda, Twilight of the Gods), despair (Dante Symphony),good-naturedness (Don Quixote), fate (Pelleas andMelisande), and provocation (The Rite of spring).

Contemporary composers such as Boulez (Domaines),Dutilleux (Violin Concerto), Messiaen (Chronochromie),and Penderecki (Adagio), use the instrument's manyresources without complex.

In addition, solo, duo, and chamber music works bycomposers such as Donatoni, Ferneyhough, Reiner, yunIsang, Sciortino, Schuller, Dubois... are part ofthe instru-ment 's repertoire.

Undeniably, the bass clarinet is an instrument unto itself, able to adapt to the rigors ofmusical writing with unexpectedflexibility. This surprising instrument has not yet finishedunveiling its mysterious riches.

LAPOSITIONDE TRAVAIL

DEBOI]T OI] ASSIS

I'instrumentiste d cordes.

THE PRACTICE POSITION

STANDING OR SITTING

The standing position allows the player greater freedomof expression and ease.

Nevertheless, in the beginning, it is importarfito be aware

of even slight details, which can generate progress... orregression. Particular attention must be given to the breathing

exercises.

The sitting position allows the player to analyse thesensations related to the use of the DIAPHRAGM (deep

breathing), with greater precision.

When sitting, use ofthe END PEG is preferable to that ofthe NECK STRAP. Whichever support system is used, itmust be adjusted to a height which allows maximumrelaxation.

Long, exhausting work sessions should be avoided. Yourconcentration and physical stamina must remain unimpaired. For better efficiency, thirty minute practice periods can be

separated by a few minutes of rest. Your lips should nevercompensate for a slack airstream.

AIR PRESSURE

The breath is to the wind player what the bow is to the

string player. For that reason, the first chapter is entirelydevoted to the analysis of the AIR COLUMN. Thepreliminary exercises put this analysis into practice toinsure that the fundamental role of breath control does notescape you.

BREATHINGAND THE AIRCOLUMN

A good breath (VOLUME), well distributed in the instru-ment (FLOW) and combined with the proper positioning ofthe embouchure (CONTROL), providethe essential elements

necess ary to improve sound and technique.

It is difficult to explain BREATHING because sensations

play a major role in analysing, understandirg, and usingthisi in fact, natural phenomenon.

One must understand that the lungs are supported by alarge thinmuscle calledthe DIAPHRAGM, which separates

the digestive system (VISERA), fromthe respiratory system(rHoRAx).

There is an evident relation between the thorax and the

visera. Because the diaphragmrests on the viseral-abdomi-nal mass, we can consider that mass as a THIRD LtlNG.

In other words, the lungs attarn their maximumeffectiveness only if the "third lung" assumes its role and

works in harmony with the diaphragm.

Good breathing consists quite simply of drawing air inthrough the mouth to fill the lungs, the body remainsrelaxed, the throat loose and the shoulders dropped. Withouteffort, the alveoli fillwith air,the ribs expand, the diaphragmdescends to rest firmly on the abdominal mass, and the bellyswells. (Your belt should be slightly uncomfortable at thispoint !)

Consider the diaphragm pressure of this mass of air (andflesh) as the MOTOR for your sound. Like the bagpipeplayer's arm pressin g agaLnst the WINDBAG, this motorproduces even air pressure. The weight of the droppedshoulders, associated with the work of the diaphrdgn, creates the vertical dynamic ofthe air column. The pressuri zedair has only one possible exit : the mouth !

The air column can be quickly summ aizedas the actionof the abdominal muscles pressing against inhaled air tosustain and complete the initial work of the diaphrd5n,together with the action of the cheeks, which regulate the

volume and pressure of the at entering the oral cavity. These two muscular activities collaborate, to producehomogeneity between notes.

N.B. : Abdominal pressure (diaphramatrc, abdominal-costal, abdominal-visceral) must fulfill two requirements :

1 - to be CONTINIIOUS, like a pernanently inflatedWINDBAG, but WITHOUT PAINFUL E,XAG-GERATION (risk of a muscle tear or HERNIA !)

IMD 193

2 - to avoid propagating tension, especially in the throat.

sion, vous 6tes pr6t ir communiquer cet air d I'instrument, d

THE TRANSMISSIONTHE EMBOUCHURETHE REGULATOR

After taking a perfect breath, the air is under pressure, andyou are ready to send it through the mouthpiece and reed(output regulator), and on into the instrument.

THE TRANSMISSION

First, before involving the regulator (mouthpiece), let theair pressure rise into the mouth and swell the cheeks. Beconscious to what extent this compact and pressurrzed airconnects with the trachea, lungs, and abdomen.

HINTS

Try this exercise without the instrument, coveringyour mouth with your hand, as ifto prevent yourself fromspeaking : you supress your speech, which, being underpressure, wants only to burst out.

You have just verified that your transmission works.

THE EMBOTJCHURE

Reed and mouthpiece prepared, place your embouchurecoffectly by :

1) placing the upper teeth on the mouthpiece,

2) slightly lengthening the chin, which refines the lowerlip and allows it to cover the lower teeth WITHOUTUNNECESSARY THICKNESS thus permitting thereed to vibrate freely,

3) curvirrg the mouth around the mouthpiece to producean airtight and flexible embouchure.

THE REGIJLATOR

The sound will speak easily, if your mouthpiece is fittedwith a medium strength reed (2Yz - 3).

Avoid extremely stiff reeds, which will tire you andhardenyour sound. Overly softreeds should also be avoided, because they will interfere with maintaining air pressure

and producing a well-rounded sound.

To master extreme dynamics (ppp ---fln, it is best to use

a medium strength reed on a mouthpiece with a mediumopening.

The flexibility resulting from this balanced combinationwill permit you to find the sound that you are looking for.

* Voir "LE VOILE DU PALAIS" Page 70

EMISSION: THE BIRTHAND AMPLIFICATION OF THE SOUNI)

Now that the vertical mechanism of the air column isclear, let's use a three step process to start the reed vibrating.

1 . PREPARATION OF THE EMBOUCHURE

C are fully preparing your embouchure (sensitive, airti ght,and flexible), place the MOUTHPIECE comfortably in themouth. Too much mouthpiece is disagreeable as well as

difficult to control. Too little mouthpiece causes the reed tobe crushed against the tip of the mouthpiece, making yourcarefully stored air completely useless : youTREGULATORcan release only bit by bit, alargeFlow (ff) is out of thequestion.

2 . DTSCOVERING LOW BREATH

This time, the exercise consists of filling the TUBE, andlooking for the largest, most POWERFUL BREATH pos-sible. Blow into the instrument without producing a sound. The lips are placed aroundthe mouthpiece without stiffness,to guarante maximum airtightness.

The embouchure is ready, so activate the AIR COLUIVII{.Try to produce the sound of LOW WIND by opening thethroat and raising the SOFT PALATE*. (If needed, pronounce the word 'rHorr before playingto findthe necess aryopenness).

{< See "THE SOFT PALATE" Page 70

3. DISCOVERING OPTIMAL LIP PRESSURE :

BIRTH OF THE SOUND

After taking in a low, full breath, tighten your lipsprogressively (reinforcing lip pressure) until the soundbegins. Increase the air pressure (support the sound)without additional movement of the chin or lips.

Your cheeks may be inflated : at this particular momentit's fine. Varythe intensity ofthe sound, butDoN'T CHEATby moving THE EMBOUCHURE. Push the air withoutforcing (toward l)*, and hold the air back without slackness(toward p)*, being careful to maintain the instrument's bestTIMBRE. This will be your pennanent REFERENCE !

II - FORLIP PRESSURE AND VOICING THESOUND

This time the reed begins vibrating delicately, as the

natural result of the preceding breath. The lips play a very

important role here, because one must find the exact pres-

2) : Some notes may seem clearer, more or less open,

or darker than others. Notes with contrasting qualities mayeven follow one another directly. It is up to you to compensate

for these differences by controlling the air pressure and itsdistribution to the best of your ability.

For example, air pressure should be increased for an

unresponsive note, or in contrast, decreased for a note thatis too resonant or explosive.

WHATEVER THE CASE, SOUND QUALITY MUSTBE YOUR PRIMARY CONCERN.

IMPORTANT

Accustom yourself to monitoring your general POSI-TION, and in particular, that of your embouchure, byusing a mirror.

Be awarethat the lower lip tends to compensate for an

awkward interval, or uncomfortable note by movingslightly. Consequently, check that the embouchureremains absolutely still during these exercises. You willsave yourself much annoyance.

L'ARTICULATIONDES SONS ET LE DETACHEARTICULATING THE SOUND AND TONGUING

Before continuing, the notion of articulation should be

clearified. Articulation brings a new physical element intoplay : THE TONGUE.

The proper use ofthis precious organ in the EXTENSIONOF THE AIR COLUMN permits immediate flexibility and

relaxation. Later, when this concept has been wellas s imil ated, rapid virtuo s ic S TAC CATO c an be approachedwithout any problem.

TONGUINGIn comparison to the soprano clarinet, tonguing on the

bass clarinet requires a certain adaptation. Consider thefollowing reasons why :

I . The imposing size ofthe mouthpiece, and its positionin the mouth, cause the tongue to be placed slightlyfurther back in the mouth.

2 . The naffow, pointed tonguing ofthe soprano clarinetbadly suitsthe special soundofthe bass clarinet, especiallyin the low register.

3 . The length of the tube causes a tongued note to have

a delayed response.

THE TECHNIQUE OF TONGUINGJUST BEFORE MAKING A SOUND, the air column is

under pressure and the tongue is in contact with the reed toprevent it fromvibrating. By releasingthe reed, TONGUING,a precisely articulated sound, is produced. The REED can

VIBRATE freely.

Reducing tongue movement will lighten your articula-tion, making it both delicate and quick.

To avoid aggressive tonguitrg, imagine that the tongueleaves the reed rather than approaches it. Think of thetongue releasing the reed and the pressurized air at thesame time.

This technique implies that the back of the tongue isanchored low in the mouth, thus giving the tip ofthe tonguesupport, and allowing it to bounce efficiently.

HINTSThink of a skier, who by holding his upper body (back

ofthe tongue), allows his bent and relaxed legs (tip ofthetongue), to react easily to each bump he encounters (thereed).

The essential problems in changing registers consist of :

1 . Finger synchronization, coordination,

2 . Embouchure control. Firm but relaxed, the embou-chure must overcome the tendency to compensate withthe lips during difficult passages. The shoulders and

To facilitate the emission of low notes (especially whenplaying large intervals) THINK OF SLOWING DOWNTHE AIR SPEED WITHOUT INTERRTJPTING THEAIR FLOW, before reaching the lower note. Just before thelower note speaks, accelerate the air spe ed again, to achievea full, round, and colorful sound.Try this technique slowlyat first, later making it as brief as possible, to create an evensmoother interval.

This technique is useful for all intervals, and produces anexcellent refined LEGATO, even when playing largeintervals. At this point in your study, be patient andaffentive : your ultimate expressive capability and sounddepend on it.

IMPORTANTThink ofreaching the upper note delicately. To accomplish

this, stress the lower note while preparing the upper notementally. Its timbre, color, and intonation, HAVEALREADY BEEN PREPARED WITHIN YOU. you willhave the impression of sliding from one note to the other, almost as if the TwO NOTES were being playedsimultaneously for an instant :

THIS WILL TRANSLATE INTO A PERFECT'' LEGATO-ESPRE S SIVO'' .

PLAY EXERCISE tr WITH THE FOLLOWINGDYNAMICS:

? _ I I-. " sf" sur la note sup6rieure

* For versiofr6,the air pressure must pass the needs oftheupper note during the crescendo (as if you intended to playthe upper note louder), and then be finely adjusted uponreaching the note.

Dimitri cHosTAKovICH Lady Macbeth

HINTS

You should make the low notes sound like those of acellist using his entireBOW, and making no accent whenchanging direction. The UP-BOW and DOWN-BOWjoin perfectly to produce a flawless legato.

For the wind player, the air column is the bow.Maximum bow length, and the weight of the bow on the

string, corespond to air pressure which originates as lowas possible (abdominal-visceral or diaphragm pressure).

This low breath support is an indication ofthe player'sstrong desire to find a particular sound color, to developit and to play with great legato.

During an articulation, "a bow change", is set off bya discreet and delicate tongue movement. This movementoccuring in the absolute extention ofthe AIR COLUMNis related to that of the cellist's wrist.

CONCLUSION

2. HOMOGENEITE

3 VELOCITE

CONCLUSION

The movement of the SOFT PALATE can be perfectlycontrolled, just as a singer can control the head voice.

By causing variations in the pressure and volume ofthe airin the mouth, the soft palate causes the twelfth to split, justlike the functioning of aharmonic key. This "new" harmonickey compliments the actual register key, which can be weakin this tessitura.

Le sentiment de faire naitre EN VOUS ces notes doit The feeling that the notes begin WITHIN YOU shouldvous paraitre alors encore plus 6vident. now be more obvious.

You may sometimes feel the harmonics (H) form "in the nose",

or a vertical movement of the Adam's apple or even a slightcontraction in the tongue (especially at the back)... this means

that you have become conscious of the workings of theharmonic key... and the effectiveness of your CONCEN-TRATION.

BEFORE ATTEMPTING LARGEDESCENDING INTERVALS, practice a me-dium descending interval, which will facilitatethe following exercises.

First, try to obtain a large glissando betweenthese two notes. To do this, lazily shift the softpalate. The sound may seem "ugly" for the

moment, but persevere, for only the effect of the

"glissando" and the necessary movement of the

SOFT PALATE are of interest.

The tempo and the glissando are faster. Thesound is perhaps less disagreeable. The shift is

made more comfortably. Take note, andmemorizethe position ofyour SOFT PALATE.

The shift is increasingly active. The movementof the soft palate has become so flexible that theinterval sounds quasi-glissando G quasi-le-gato. The sound is good.

The shift is well asserted. The soft palatemoves like a reflex to the correct position. Theinterval is perfectly slurred.

The brand of bass clarinet, type of mouthpiece, reed

strength, and lip pressure, all have a very importantinfluence on the emission of the highest notes.

The model used here is a BUFFET CRAMPON 1193,B 40 VANDOREN mouthpiece and GLOTIN reed (#3).

Their success will therefore be relative and personal. Asa result, the fingerings that are proposed here, are forinformation only, and may require a certain degree ofadaptation.

libre possible.

We have alreadynoticedthe effectiveness ofthe diaphragm

for the emission and articulation of notes in all registers.

This diaphragm articulation is useful on unsteady notes

requiring immediate roundness, presence, and precision.

The air column must constantly remain taut, and the throatas free as possible.

ATTENTION

The throat is not used to articulate !

This method of articulating is recommended for isolated

notes, and is obviously not well adapted to rapid passages.

1wB'f

The tube length of the bass clarinet produces a delayed

response on low notes.

For that reason, tonguing in the low register can be

awkward or uncertain, in particular when playing f to .ffi.(An instrument which seals badly can be a contributingfactor to sluggish response).

The preparation of certain low notes must be anticipated

by making them ready mentally (color, intonation, precision,

volume), and increasing pressure on the air columll. The

diaphragm is ready to propulse your air to the depths of the

instrument : the tongue is placed in the extension of theair column (don't forget).

N.B. : You will notice the abdominal-visceral motorfunction, and the effectiveness ofthe pressunzedair in your

cheeks.

Be aware that this motor function operates only when

relaxed (shoulders dropped, face calm, neck and throatloose).

EXERCICES

The player must be very precise when tonguing in the

upper (or harmonic) register, and remain conscious of the

important role of the SOFT PALATE.

The importance of MENTAL PREPARATION (like a

horn player, we can produce many notes with the same

fingering), and the complete control of mechanical factors

(tongue, air pressure, embouchure), should be obvious, toplay effectiveley in the upper register.

The fi rst Upe o ftonguing demands c onsiderable pre c i s ion.It corresponds to the bowing indication "saultando". Therole of the tongue is essential : its intensity and lightness(two notions difficultto reconcile) determine sound quality. The air column remains "taut", So that the tongue can moveas little as possible. Spirited but never tense, the tongue isprecise, but doesn't attack the reed.

Practice on a chromatic scale, then improvise otherexercises which favor the desired articulation.

The second type of tonguing demands excellent air sup-port, in addition to great tongue precision. It is in some wayssimilar to the "portando" technique (precise attack), butlacks sustain afterthe attack. This type oftonguing can markan entrance without making it heavy. Played rapidly, it isaggressive. When used for isolated notes, it is incisive and

well-defined.
