Rural Kindergartens seek the comprehensive development of children

through activities of cognitive, motor, affective and social skills. The

difference between a kindergarten in a city is that the rural

Kindergartens often are run by mothers of the community (called

"entertainers" or "promoters"). These “teachers” receive training and

then are monitored regularly (ideally once a week) for lecturer (called

"teacher coordinators"). In addition rural Kindergartens are formed on

the basis of community participation. the basis of community participation.

achieve the goals of the month. Usually there are up to 42 kids for just

So, why do I have to pay for volunteering abroad? I mean, I want to help them and all and still I will have to pay? That is a

common question people ask. People often forget that volunteering is never free. Volunteering Abroad is definitely a choice,

and when you choose to do so, you have to pay. For what? For your airfare, for your lodgings, for your meals, for local

commute, airport transfer, for your project placement tie-ups! There is more in the list, but again, all of us dread the word

"program fee"

So, we thought we should simplify it for you. Your program fee solely aims to provide you comfort, while you volunteer

Most people are surprised to hear that they have to pay to volunteer abroad. What they often do not realize is that there

are significant administrative costs involved to arrange for a worthwhile volunteer abroad placement. Volunteering Solu-

tions is not supported by any government funding and runs its programs entirely from the fee that volunteers pay to take

part in the volunteer programs. Volunteering Abroad, involves incurring of many costs such as food, accommodation,

transportation, transfers, project selection etc. The program fee charged by us, goes into providing you all these services.

The money that you pay to us is distributed at various stages to provide you a meaningful volunteer abroad experience. The money that you pay to us is distributed at various stages to provide you a meaningful volunteer abroad experience.

Food & Accommodation

It is necessary for an organization to employ full time staff to recruit and manage volunteers. There is lot of work that goes

side by side ensuring that you are supported before and during your program. We are dedicated to make your volunteering

abroad a memorable experience and ward off of all possible hunches at every steps. Our administration cost is 28% of the

total cost which include advertising, staff salary, website maintenance, taxes, volunteer recruitment and other expenses.

The application processing fee is part of your administrative costs, unlike many other volunteer travel company we do not

chargecharge any additional credit card processing fee. These companies can charge as much as 6% on your application fee taking

it to a difference of almost $100 extra. We have a flat rate and that is what we charge.

Administration

You may be endowed with exceptional skills and acumen in your area of expertise but to figure out your exact role in the

placement agency and to gain insights of its operations require training. To know cultural practices and etiquettes is of sub-

lime importance to carry out your tasks. So you need someone who could impart training and dispel your doubts at every

step, obviously he/she doubles as your friend and trainer.

Training and orientation

We charge for food and accommodation based on your preferences. You may decide to do home stay or group accommo-

dation or relish the cuisines cooked by host family and pay them. You may cook for yourself if you find it economical or your

placement organization may provide you lunch. You have plethora of options to choose from and charges are determined

accordingly. Host organization provides a safe and welcoming atmosphere for the volunteers. Food and accommodation

charges cover 40% of your total expenditure.

Food and accommodation

Volunteer service organization often employs in-country staff to provide local support and to make your volunteering

abroad experience memorable. As long as you are volunteering outside which may take up to six months, our staff is con-

tinuously working for you behind the screen. So we pay them from program fees we receive despite other sources like

grants and donations.

NothingNothing can be more discomforting than to struggle for getting basic services like healthcare, banking or even visa review-

ing in a foreign land that otherwise would have been comparatively less difficult in an English speaking country. As a volun-

teer, you have not been tied up to the agency only but you may roam around the city to watch historical places, zoo, movies

etc. and should have total access to everything in order to distress yourself. VolSol has incredible in-country support

(around 12%) to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

In country support

The most important part of the volunteering fees is on the project which you have chosen. Program fees help fund the proj-

ect activities and resources. Thus organizations need paid staff member to ensure continuity of your program and adminis-

trative duties. Project development involved 11% of the total program fee.

What am I paying for? (Contd.)19

The historic archipelagos of Incas are in abundance all over the region, especially in the city of Cuzco. The Sacred Valley, the

Saksaywaman, and the Pucllana (in Lima city) are just the highlights; you may find many more areas of wilderness, which

are a delight to visit for explorers.

Not so ruined after all

There are three overlapping trails of Inca on the way to one of the world’s finest and greatest territories and also UNESCO

world heritage site, Machu Picchu. Reflecting as a piece of green pearl in the middle of plush green tropical mountain forest,

this site is the top attraction point in the entire Peru, or maybe South America too.

All the way to Machu Picchu

The panoramic view which has desert as well as ocean as its part, says a lot about the place itself; Paracas National Reserve

is one such place. And as if this alone was not enough, the magical view while a hike in Huaraz, the Tambopata National

Reserve, the Ampay National Sanctuary, and many more such attractive locations are available for a delightful sojourn.

Adore the nature

The Incas have never waited for a special occasion to get into celebration mode, just give them a reason and the carnival

begins. Peru has maintained the legacy of its ancient culture till date, which clearly reflects from their way of working, attire,

folk art, and even cooking. Even UNESCO couldn’t resist admiring the famous Scissors Dance (Danza de Tijeras) by

recognizing it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Live it the Peruvian way

….. Or eat while you shop, the choice is yours. The narrow lanes of Peru are bludgeoned with street vendors and souvenir

shops. And while you are buying the handmade crafts and accessories, the aroma of wood baked Cuy and barbecued

Peruvian chicken pulls you to the adjoining food joint.

Shop while you eat….

Sharon Umayam is from Dededo, Guam and currently works as a registered

nurse in San Francisco, CA. SHaron volunteered with Volunteering Solutions in

Peru on August of 2009, in Thailand in February 2012 and in Cape Town, South

Africa in Feb 2013.

I chose Volunteering Solutions because they had received many positive reviews from past volunteers, they were

affordable, and their projects were sustainable.

MyMy first mission with VS took me to Peru. I chose Peru for two reasons: 1) The city was built around ancient Incan

ruins and 2) I wanted to practice my Spanish. The people were friendly and, even as a female who traveled alone,

I felt very safe. In this mission, I volunteered as a nurse and was fortunate to be assigned to a travel-clinic. We

cared for many types of people, from students at nearby universities to natives high up in the remote villages of

the Andes Mountains. During this trip I was fortunate enough to be able to visit the ancient Incan ruins at Machu

Picchu.

Meet Sharon Umayam

Why did you decide to volunteer abroad with Volunteering Solutions in Peru ?

Advice I have would be to 1) be prepare to fall in-love with the people of each country 2) Pack lightly because you

will end up leaving with lots of souvenirs 3) Bring a camera and take lots of pictures 4) Bring comfortable shoes 5)

Have fun!

What advice do you have for future volunteers?

These trips have impacted me in many ways. I am much more appreciative of the hardships people go through. I

am much more amazed at the resilience of children. I am much more open to the cultural differences of people.

Most of all, I am more inspired to want less and to give more because the people that I worked with (patients and

children) have taught me how to give unconditionally.

How has this experience impacted your future?
