those in pain, shelter to the displacedand comfort to those who need agood word. Even as we celebratethe joys of Christmas, let us bemindful of those in the slums, orphanages, old age homes, and jailsin and around Vellore. If we canmake one visit to one of these areasthis Christmas and share a cake withthem, their faces will light up. It’s anact that will trigger a cascade of careand concern in us in the long term, they say.

That may be the best way tocelebrate Christmas 2016. Wishingevery staff and student a joyousChristmas and a bright, sunny andprosperous New Year.

Dr. Sunil Chandy

remember last year we hadto call off our Christmascelebrations to express

solidarity with the victims of Chennaifloods. This year too, we aresaddened by the passing of our latechief minister and the devastation leftbehind by the cyclone few days ago.The transition to a cashless culture isa new experience which has come thisChristmas season. In this wet andwilted environment, what is it we mustfeel and do this Christmas in 2016?

Come to think of it, two thousand yearsago, a baby was born in much the samemilieu. It was the most difficult ofcircumstances a newborn woulddesire. Under the dictates of a Herod,a census taking had forced Mary andJoseph to travel on a donkey-back forquite a distance. Fatigue and thirstwould have prompted Joseph toknock on the doors of many inns.

There were none to rest the night. Finally, Mary delivered in an outhousewith the mouldy odour of hay andanimal fur. It was an environment ofconstraints in different ways.

Yet, the birth of Jesus was one thatheralded hope. The angels joined inchorus to assure ‘peace and goodwillto men’ by appearing to the shepherdswho were poor people. Much like thepatients we cater to. Celestial signswere given to the wise men whohomed into Bethlehem following thestar. They joined in the celebrationtoo because in their own lives, therewas an anticipation of a messiah.

Christmas in 2016, is different becauseof the circumstances. But it is still aseason of hope. We must continue tobring hope to the hopeless, relief to

Turning of the Sod at CMC's Kannigapuram Site

Founder's Day 2016

Envisioned years ago, the Kannigapuram Services and Educational Facility of CMC brokeground at the site of construction on 20th December, 2016, in the presence of Director,Dr. Sunil Chandy, Associate Director (Admin) Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Council Chairman, Dr.M.C. Matthew, Vice Chairman, Dr. Sanjeeth Peter, Medical Superintendent, Dr. C.E.Eapen, Principal, Dr. Anna Pulimood, Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee, Dean,College of Nursing, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, General Superintendent, Mr. Ebinezar

Sunderraj. It was a time of looking back andlooking ahead for the CMC community thatgathered to prayerfully reflect on the projectat hand. The need for this upcoming facilitywas felt particularly in 2005, during thedirectorship of Dr. George Chandy, when itwas first addressed. At the ceremony celebrating this soon-to-be establishment, Dr. Sunil Chandyacknowledged that it was an emotional moment for the collective family of

CMC, particularly those who have been directly responsible for carrying forward the plan. “This is a statement from Godthat He continually engages with us,” he said, speaking of the favour of the Almighty that brought about timely sanctionsand goodwill ambassadors. He extended his thanks to the General and Medical Superintendent’s offices, the staff ofvarious support services and the Executive and Finance Committees, for stayingdedicated to the undertaking. Dr. Chandy then urged the institution to be joyful of itspioneering accomplishments towards social welfare, thankful for the opportunitiesthat have rendered CMC a substantial instrument in the healing ministry and prayerfulconcerning potential challenges that lay in its journey forward.Dr. M.C. Matthew and Dr. George Chandy, former Director of CMC, both keyindividuals in this project, turned the first sod, setting in motion the construction of whatwill soon be CMC’s latest campus. Dr. Matthew expressed his hope that CMC willcontinue to transcend beyond its technological advancements and credentials to remain a testimony of God’s work. Dr.George Chandy noted that CMC has reached the height of trust and legacy where, the more it expands, the more it will beflocked by people with needs. Dr. Sanjeeth Peter voiced his belief that this latest facility would represent three things: adwelling place of the living God, an altar that nurtures all who approach it, and the centennial aggregate of the institution’sservices, student training, outreach and advocacy earned from patients. The CMC Kannigapuram facility is expected to be the model project for Tamil Nadu, in that the replication of its designwithin the state will be permitted. By the time the facility is erected, CMC will have seen its milestone of one hundred yearsof medical education.

Founder’s Day is observed in CMC on the birthday of Dr. Ida Scudder,in appreciation of services rendered by the retired staff of that year. Thistime, in remembrance of her 146th birthday, the programme took placeon 21st December at the Ida Scudder Auditorium, where Dr. AnandJob, retired Head, ENT Department, presided as the guest of honour.Dr. Job in his address to the gathering, likened CMC’s growth to that ofa tree – the seed of a single-bed dispensary in 1900 has now branchedout into an extensive network of campuses owing to the dedication of its staff.Citations of retired staff members were presented, as they were each honoured with a memento of appreciation.Comprehensive reports of their beginnings in CMC, accolades and initiatives contributed to the institution wereread out by the appointing authorities, making for a representation of long-standing career curves.Prize winners of various talent contests and sporting events were also awarded at the programme. The followingspecial awards were presented to the individiuals listed below:Dr. Thomas Koshi Award: Mr. Prabhu Dass A., Sel. Gr.II Radiographer, Radiodiagnosis Continued on Page 4

The Department of Physical Medicine Rehabilitation (PMR) celebratedthe Golden Jubilee of the Mary Verghese Institute of Rehabilitationon 26th November, 2016. On this day in 1966, the Institute wasinaugurated by the Union Minister of Health, Dr. Sushila Nayyar.Dr. Mary Verghese, who was a student of the 1946 batch of MBBS,suffered spinal cord injury following a road traffic accident which ledto paraplegia, leaving her wheelchair-bound. She was treated by

Dr. Paul Brand, the then Head of Orthopaedics and was sent for rehabilitation under Sir George Bedbrooke inAustralia, where she was trained to be independent using a wheelchair. On her return to India, she found that therewere no centres of rehabilitation in the country and took up the challenge to pursue her studies in Physical Medicineand Rehabilitation under Dr Howard Rusk, New York, USA. With Diplomate of American Board of PhysicalMedicine and Rehabilitation, the highest postgraduate qualification in this speciality, she returned to Vellore andstarted the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at CMC, Vellore and subsequently the RehabilitationInstitute in 1966. Soon, patients from all over India started coming to meet her to get treated and rehabilitated. Popularlyknown as ‘The Surgeon on Wheelchair’, she was a source of inspiration and strength to all who came to her fortreatment. For her pioneering work, the nation honoured Dr. Mary with a Padma Shri award in 1972.The institute that began with two rooms admitting 16 patients, now has 83beds and treats about 900 patients annually. Patients with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, children with cerebral palsy and amputees are admitted forrehabilitation. Apart from doctors and nurses, the multidisciplinary teamincludes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, social workers, engineers and prosthetists and orthotists.

The institute has been designated as theWHO collaborating centre for development of Rehabilitation technology,Capacity Building and Disability prevention. It has a gait lab, Urodynamicslab, vocational rehabilitation programme and community rehab programme.Sports activities are an interesting feature of the rehab programme andseveral former patients have won laurels in the state and national scene.Pursuit of a cure for Spine injuries and reports of cell transplantation atseveral centres led the department to institute a Spinal Cord Regeneration

Laboratory at Rehab Institute, which was supported by the Department of Bio Technology. Follow up of patientsis organised through annual Rehab Melas, monthly support groups and regular home visits. At the Golden Jubilee celebration, Dr. Suranjan Bhattacharji, former Director and formerHead of PMR, recounted the journey of the Rehabilitation Institute over 50 years.Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director, Dr. P Zacharia, former Head of Physiology, Dr. VinithaRavindran, Deputy Dean and Mrs. Ruma Nayak, Deputy Nursing Superintendent gavetheir felicitations. Mrs. Susy Koshy, Mrs. Anna Jacob John and Mrs. Anna Zachariah, who played a crucial role in helping Dr. Mary set up the facility, as well as artist Suresh, were honoured during the ceremony.

To commemorate the journey over the last 5 decades, acoffee table book titled You Raise Me Up to More Than I Can Be, compiled andwritten by Dr. Pippa Deodhar, was released by the Principal, Dr. Anna Pulimoodduring the function. This book gives a good understanding of the institute and narratesstories of patients who have been rehabilitated to understand what rehabilitation meansin real life. The plaque for a new Golden Jubilee floor was also unveiled at during programme, by

Dr. Sunil Chandy. This was followed by a tree planting ceremony in gratitude of all who worked and currently workin the department. A refurbished canteen in the campus was dedicated by General Superintendent, Mr. EbinezerSundarraj. The celebration was well attended by retired staff and alumni of Rehab.
