When someone looks at a team that lost two of the top players in program history to graduation, the fi rst thing that comes to mind is how to replace them. For many teams this would cause headaches but not for the 2006 edition of Xavier volleyball. A team that lost its top offensive and defensive players will look to the returning core of players who accounted for 59 percent of the total offense and 45 percent of the total defense from a team that fi nished 21-11 and made its eighth-consecutive trip to the Atlantic 10 Tournament. In addition to the A-10 tournament streak, XU has now posted 20 or more wins in 10 of the last 16 seasons under head coach Floyd Deaton.

“It’s going to be fun,” said Deaton. “I think we have a group of young ladies that are really focused on what they’re doing. I think it is going to be very, very competitive. I think we are fl at out across the board equal in a lot of positions. It’s going to be very competitive at the beginning, which is going to make it nice.”

THE PLAYERS

When talking about a veteran team, you have to start with the senior class. This season XU fi nds a very talented senior class that is ready to lead. Seniors Astyn Bjorklund, Ashley Norris and Danielle Skrajewski will take the reigns into their fi nal campaign as Musketeers and set to continue the Xavier tradition. Bjorklund will be looked upon to lead the Xavier attack at the net, and Norris will be counted on in the back row to shore up the XU defensive efforts, while Skrajewski will be asked to provide a complete effort at both the net and in the back row.

“It’s their team and I think they understand that,” stated Deaton. “So far, it’s a whole different mentality. They don’t complain and that’s fantastic. Those are the kind of girls you can coach. They’re letting the freshmen know that this is what is expected of them and this is the way it’s going to be. They’re expected to lead and I think all three of them have the capability to do that.”

Bjorklund enters her senior year as one of the top hitters in program history and is poised to notch her 1,000th sometime around the middle of September. She comes into the season with 867 career kills and a .310 hitting percentage, which ranks her third all-time in program history. The Nicollet, Minn. native ranked second on the team in 2005 for blocks per game with 1.10 and was third on the team in kills per game with 2.89.

Skrajewski will be relied on heavily to contribute both offensively and defensively as she is on pace to become only the ninth member of Xavier’s 1,000-1,000 club for kills and digs in a career. Currently the Downingtown, Pa. native has 849 kills and 819 digs for her career and could break 1,000 for each around the middle of September as well. She also is a threat behind the end line as leads all returners with 0.26 aces per game.

The fi nal senior of the trio will look to fi ll the void at libero or provide quality minutes in the back row. Norris, the Indianapolis, Ind. native, has seen limited action over her fi rst three seasons due to the departed Jordan Brightwell (second on the all-time list for digs in a career) who roamed the back row since the inception of the libero rule. However, she is not a stranger to the court as she averages 1.57 digs per game including a career-high 12-dig effort against Miami (Ohio) in the fi nal match of last season.

The junior class will provide more support at the net as Jenni Horvath and Jill Quayle return. Horvath could be the utility player for the Blue and White this season as she is a well-rounded player on and off the net. The Oxford, Ohio native could see time at outside hitter, right side hitter, setter or even libero if the situation arises. Horvath averaged 0.66 kills per game last season and 1.46 digs per game but will be relied on more frequently to contribute from all areas of the fl oor.

The other junior is a force in the middle and returns as the team leader in blocks from last season. Quayle, a native of North Royalton, Ohio, will be the bookend with Bjorklund to shore up the middle and stop the opposition at the net. She averaged 1.16 blocks per game and 2.77 kills per game as a sophomore and is poised to surpass those fi gures this season.

The sophomore class could provide the answer to the back row void left by graduation as Megan Hellman, Vanessa Romano and Jenn Welsh will all be asked to provide defensively. Hellman and Romano could vie for time as the libero with each capable of adding depth to the back row. Both saw limited action in their rookie campaigns but have shown signs of good things to come.

Welsh returns as the teams’ primary setter from a season ago. The Goodland, Ind. native estab-lished Xavier’s single-season mark for assists in 2005 as she dished out 1,473 assists to go along with 0.26 aces per game and 2.81 digs per game. She will be looked upon once again to guide the XU offense and try to build upon a solid freshman season.

The freshmen class will provide an immediate impact on the 2006 edition of Xavier volleyball. Four newcomers from four different states make up the class as Lauren Kaminsky (Muncie, Ind.), Hillary Otte (Erlanger, Ky.), Kelly Ruth (Elyria, Ohio) and Kelly Sherman (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) will each be asked to showcase their talents on the court. While each can play multiple positions, the talent level of each will allow each of them every opportunity to see the court and make an immediate impact offensively and defensively.

THE SCHEDULE

The Musketeers are going to get tested early and often in 2006 with 16 of the fi rst 17 matches on the road including the fi rst three Atlantic 10 matches away from Cintas Center. In addition to the road test early in the season, Xavier will face seven teams that surpassed 20 or more wins last season and fi ve teams that qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament in 2005.

“At the beginning of the season, playing Ball State, Michigan State and IPFW, we’re going to see what we’re made of real quick,” said Deaton. “I’m looking forward to it just because of the teams’ attitude. We’re going to need to stay focused on the road. In talking with the seniors, I think they have something in mind and it goes along with teaching the younger kids what to expect and how things are run.”

The Musketeers will open the 2006 campaign in nearby Muncie, Ind., as XU begins play at the Ball State Invitational. The weekend will feature regional powers IPFW, Michigan State and host BSU. Xavier will face three teams with a combined record of 57-34 in 2005 with the Mastodons and Car-dinals each posting 20+ wins a season ago.

Xavier will play in front of the home crowd a little earlier than 2005 as the Musketeers will welcome Marshall to Cintas Center for the 2006 home opener on August 30 compared to the home opener on September 23 of last season. The Thundering Herd capped a 26-6 record last season with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

After the quick home match, Xavier will again take to the road for the next month. The fi rst stop will be Miami, Fla., for the Florida International Tournament on September 1-2. The fi eld includes Oral Roberts (22-11 in 2005), Cal (19-11 in 2005) and host FIU (15-13 in 2005). Cal earned a spot in last year’s NCAA Tournament and was defeated in the second round by Wisconsin, who later fell to the 2005 NCAA Champion, Washington.

The next weekend will take the Musketeers out west to Las Ve-gas. XU will compete against Cal

Riverside, Cal State Northridge and host UNLV in a weekend tournament on September 8-9. Even though the combined 2005 records of the three totaled 35-49, the trip west should give Xavier a taste of a different type of volleyball and prep them for the conference slate.

The fi nal two weekends on the road will include two trips to the east coast and also open the conference slate for XU. The fi nal tournament will take the Musketeers to Conway, S.C., and Coastal Carolina University. Opponents for the tournament include North Florida, East Ten-nessee State and the host Chanticleers. UNF is entering its fi rst season as a NCAA Division I affi liate and fi nished 19-10 a season ago, while CCU and ETSU ended the 2005 season 19-12 and 18-14, respectively.

Xavier will wrap up the month-long road trip and start A-10 action on September 22 as the team returns to the east coast to take on Charlotte. The 49ers qualifi ed for the A-10 Tournament last season in their fi rst season in the conference and will look to return to the top of the standings in 2006. The fi nal match of the month-long road trip will take XU to our nation’s capital and George Washington University for a match up with the Colonials.

This season, the Atlantic 10 schedule will match Xavier with each team in the West Division in a home and home series, while the Musketeers will face each team in the East Division only once with the matches being played at the opposite sites as last season. This year XU will have a home and away match with Dayton, Duquesne, Saint Louis and Rhode Island, while traveling to Charlotte and GW and hosting Temple and La Salle.

The other three non-conference matches that are mixed into the A-10 schedule include Morehead State, Wright State and Louisville. U of L is coming off an outstanding 2005 campaign where the Cardinals ad-vanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and fi nished with a 31-3 mark.

The fi nal piece of the schedule will take place just north of campus as the 2006 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship will be played at Dayton’s Frericks Center on November 17-19. This year the fi eld will be expanded to six teams as the top two teams in each division will earn the automatic bids to the champion-ship with the next two best overall records from either division grabbing the fi nal spots in the champion-ship. The winner of the championship will earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

With solid senior leadership, a strong incoming class and a big home court advantage, the 2006 edition of Xavier volleyball is focused and knows that championships are Earned. Not Given.

Floyd DeatonHead Coach17th Season

Floyd Deaton is entering his 17th season as head coach of the Xavier volleyball team. Over the previous 16 years, Deaton, the winningest coach in Xavier volleyball history, has led the program to 333 victories and has coached 29 All-Conference selections while also leading the team to its only NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001.

Deaton has been named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year three times now, including back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004. He won his fi rst honor in 1998 as he led the Musketeers to an A-10 Regular Season Championship. Deaton was honored again in 2003 after he turned around a Xavier squad that began 2-6 in conference play and engineered a six-match winning streak to earn XU’s sixth consecutive berth in the Atlantic 10 Tour-nament. In 2004, he led the Musketeers to the most conference wins in school history at 12-2 and claimed a share of the A-10 Regular Season Title, while advancing to the championship match of the A-10 Tournament.

Over the past four seasons, Deaton has also created an exciting atmosphere for volleyball at Xavier as the Musketeers have consistently been ranked fi rst in the Atlantic 10 Conference and second in the state of Ohio in attendance. In 2005, nearly 500 fans per game watched XU enhance its home court record to 53-11 since the opening of Cintas Center in 2000.

Building Tradition

Deaton turned around the Xavier program when he arrived for his fi rst season in 1990. Xavier’s fi ve previous losing seasons did not deter Deaton as he led his fi rst Xavier team to a 19-17 record. In the six consecutive years following his inaugural season, the Musketeers produced winning seasons under Deaton’s guidance.

In fact, the Musketeers have produced 15 seasons of .500 or better during Deaton’s 16-year tenure. The 1997 season was the only blemish on Deaton’s otherwise perfect stretch of winning seasons as the Musketeers tallied a 13-17 record.

The Musketeers did not let this affect them as they bounced back in 1998 and were the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Champions before falling to Temple in the semifi nals of the conference tourna-ment.

In 2000, the Musketeers moved up the hill from Schmidt Fieldhouse to the new 10,250-seat Cintas Center. Xavier tied for second in the conference and advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship Match where they fell in a heartbreaker to George Washington in fi ve games.

Xavier returned to the A-10 Championship Match in 2001 and capped the most successful season in school history with a 3-0 sweep of Temple to secure its fi rst ever A-10 Title. The Musketeers then made their fi rst-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament before concluding their season with a 25-6 overall record.

The 2001 season also saw XU receive its fi rst-ever votes in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll as well as players being named A-10 Player of the Year, Setter of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

During the 2004 campaign, Deaton led Xavier to its best record in conference action since the 2001 season. The Musketeers also advanced to the A-10 Tournament championship match for the third time in the last fi ve seasons.

Going to Work

Prior to Deaton’s arrival in 1990, fans did not expect much from Xavier volleyball. Deaton took over a struggling program that only managed a 46-111 record in the previous fi ve years. Deaton was not deterred and led his inaugural team to a 19-17 record. Since hiring Deaton, Xavier volleyball has averaged 21 wins a season.

His second year saw the Musketeers put together some of the best results ever at XU. The Musketeers fi nished the 1991 sea-son with a 28-10 record that included a 14-match winning streak. The 28 wins fell one victory short of tying the school record of 29 wins set in 1980. A 23-win season followed in 1994.

Adding to the list of Deaton’s accomplish-ments, Xavier made the transition from the Midwestern Collegiate Conference to the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1995 with an 18-15 record despite facing the stiffest com-petition in school history. In 1996, only the second year participating in the Atlantic 10, Xavier produced a 21-win season.

In his 16 years, Deaton has coached two AVCA All-Northeast Region players, 26 All-Conference selections (1 MCC and 25 A-10), nine A-10 All-Rookie team selections, seven A-10 Academic All-Conference se-lections, 19 A-10 Players of the Week and 19 A-10 Rookies of the Week. He has also produced the 2000 and 2001 A-10 Player of the Year, the 2001 and 2004 A-10 Setter of the Year, the 2001 and 2005 A-10 Rookie of the Year, the 2004 and 2005 A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year, a 2004 Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year and four Academic All-Ameri-ca All-District selections.

Sixth Season

Amanda Ault begins her second season as Associate Head Coach and is entering her sixth year with the Musketeers.

In 2004, Ault helped Xavier to its fi rst Atlantic 10 regular season title since 1998 and posted the best A-10 record in school history at 12-2. She saw the Musketeers garner four All-Conference team honors, one All-Rookie team member and the A-10 Setter of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year awards return home with XU.

Last season, Ault saw the Musketeers post a 20-win season for the third time in her fi ve years with the program. In addition to a stellar record, Ault also guided the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year in addition to fi ve A-10 All-Conference selections.

“She brings excitement and energy to the team,” Head Coach Floyd Deaton said, “She is the greatest compliment to me as a coach and that is what makes us better. She has had enough experiences now to know what it takes to be a good head coach.”

Her primary duties include coordinating recruiting and travel while working with the setters during prac-tice. Ault made an immediate impact at Xavier as she helped lead the team to its only Atlantic 10 Champi-onship during her fi rst year on campus in 2001.

Ault came to Xavier from Lamar University in Texas where she served in a similar position for two seasons. The Cardinals went 41-26 over that span including a 24-11 mark in 2000 as the team advanced to the Southland Conference Championship Match. While at Lamar, Ault received her master’s in kinesiology with a sports administration emphasis.

Before her collegiate coaching career, Ault was one of the best setters in Central Michigan University his-tory fi nishing fourth all-time with 2,688 career assists. She also had the second-best single-season assists total in Chippewas’ history with 1,365 and ranked as high as 11th in NCAA Division I assists for a single season.

Ault, who graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in health fi tness in 1999 from CMU, is a na-tive of Farmington Hills, Mich. As a prep player for Farmington Harrison High School, she was named All-State, All-Region and All-Conference in volleyball. She also earned four varsity letters in softball and basketball.
